Pinocchio, ‘The Story of a Puppet', debuted in Giornale per i bambini, an Italian weekly magazine for children, on 7th July, 1881. Its author, Carlo Lorenzini - going by the pseudonym C. Collodi - intended the tale to end with the hanging of Pinocchio, but popular demand led to the character having further, more optimistic adventures. As a young man, Collodi joined the seminary but left to support the Italian national unification movement through journalism. As we keep on exploring the unusual corners of this incredible land, I have decided to go back to one of the places of my childhood. Many years ago my parents brought me to a little town between Florence and Lucca to go to a theme park dedicated to one of the most famous children books on the planet. To be perfectly honest I never really liked it: I've always found it a bit preachy but countless children all over the world can't be all wrong. I came back home a bit disappointed but the place is positively splendid. That's why this week, to celebrate the anniversary of the publication of its first chapter, What's Up Tuscany will bring you to Collodi to tell you everything there is to know about the real magic kingdom of Pinocchio.If you listen to the full episode you will learn how Carlo Lorenzini, his author, wrote it only to make some money to pay off his gambling debts and never considered it more than a "silly little story". When it became massively popular, the people of Collodi thought to turn a green area into a park dedicated to the world's most famous puppet. They enrolled many modern artists that created statues and buildings dedicated to the characters of the book. From the 1970s they placed them in a theme walk that tells the tale of the book. It's a bit highbrow and not very accessible to children but the park is really special. If you're there, check out the amazing villa next door. Its Italian garden is one of the most beautiful in Europe. A recent addition will bring you in the middle of the rainforest, surrounded by exotic plants and hundreds of rare butterflies. Tonight, we'll read the opening to “The Adventures of Pinocchio” by Italian writer Carlo Collodi, published in 1883. This episode originally aired in May of 2021. Pinocchio was carved by a woodcarver named Geppetto as a wooden puppet but he dreams of becoming a real boy. He is notably characterized for his frequent tendency to lie, which causes his nose to grow. Pinocchio is a cultural icon. He is one of the most re-imagined characters in children's literature. His story has been adapted into many other media, notably the 1940 Disney film Pinocchio. Collodi often used the Italian Tuscan dialect in his book. The Adventures of Pinocchio by C. Collodi audiobook. The Adventures of Pinocchio is a novel for children by Italian author Carlo Collodi (here transl. by Carol della Chiesa). The first half was published in serial form between 1881 and 1883, and then completed as a book for children in February 1883. It is about the mischievous adventures of Pinocchio, an animated marionette, and his poor father, a woodcarver named Geppetto. It is considered a classic of children's literature and has spawned many derivative works of art, such as Disney's classic 1940 animated movie of the same name, and commonplace ideas, such as a liar's long nose.

Pinocchio is a cultural icon. He is the wooden puppet who can talk and walk. A cheerful headstrong character who keeps breaking the rules, and whose dream is to become a real boy. His story has been the subject of many retellings, and his growing nose when he lies has become a way to satirise politicians the world over. But Pinocchio's origins are largely unknown outside Italy, and couldn't be more different from his portrayal in the 1940 Disney film. The original novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by the 19th century Italian writer Carlo Collodi is much darker and brutal, and originally ended with Pinocchio's execution, but it was also a way of educating the children of a newly unified Italy. The actual literary text also provided a model, which is still used today, for a more standardised form of the Italian language. So why has Collodi's original – which is one of the most translated books in the world and one of the most adapted – been largely ignored and why should we go back to it? Joining Bridget Kendall is Dr Katia Pizzi, the director of the Italian Cultural Institute in London, who is the editor and co-author of Pinocchio, puppets and modernity: the mechanical body; Cristina Mazzoni, Professor of Romance Languages and Cultures at the University of Vermont, and editor and translator of The Pomegranates and other Modern Italian Fairy Tales; and Dr Georgia Panteli, Lecturer in Film and Comparative Literature at the University of Vienna and University College London, and author of From Puppet to Cyborg. This week we're hoping to become a real boy! That's right, it's The Adventure of Pinocchio. The fourth most translated book in the world, it's a work for children and adults the world over. Anne and Jim go back to Tuscany with this episode, the birth place of Pinocchio's author Carlo Collodi.
