If you've seen the Disney adaptation of Pinocchio, you might think it's one of the darker, scarier films Disney have made. But did you know the original tale written by Carlo Collodi is even more terrifying? We're talking abuse, starvation, death... yeah, it's a fun ride (and written for children!!). In this episode, Charlotte tells the original dark tale of Pinocchio, some of the possible inspiration behind it in Collodi's real life, and some of the adaptations that have been made since, from dark to downright bizarre. --- Where to Find Us:  Head to our website, learnaboutpod.com, to read the full episode notes and see a list of links and resources used to research this episode. Pinocchio, ‘The Story of a Puppet', debuted in Giornale per i bambini, an Italian weekly magazine for children, on 7th July, 1881. Its author, Carlo Lorenzini - going by the pseudonym C. Collodi - intended the tale to end with the hanging of Pinocchio, but popular demand led to the character having further, more optimistic adventures. As a young man, Collodi joined the seminary but left to support the Italian national unification movement through journalism. His children's writings are cut through with satire and moral lessons specific to Italy in the 1800s, yet resonated internationally almost immediately, having been translated into as many as 260 languages.  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider Collodi in the context of other serialised literature of the time, such as Dickens; uncover the darkest moments in the story which Disney sensibly swerved; and explain what that whole weird donkey metaphor is all about… Further Reading: • ‘The Real Story of Pinocchio Tells No Lies' (Smithsonian Magazine, 2022): https://www.smithsonianmag.com/travel/the-real-pinocchio-180980027/ • ‘Pinocchio: The scariest children's story ever written' (BBC Culture, 2022): https://www.bbThe Real Story of Pinocchio Tells No Lies | Travel | Smithsonian Magazinec.com/culture/article/20221207-pinocchio-the-scariest-childrens-story-ever-written • ‘The birthplace of Pinocchio' (CBS, 2019): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAkdYYaTzcI&t=9s #1800s #Italy #Books Love the show? Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for December 11, 2022 is: imbue • im-BYOO • verb Imbue can be used as a synonym for endow (“to provide with something freely or naturally”) and can also mean “to permeate or influence” in a way that suggests colored dye permeating cloth fabric. // The children were imbued with a passion for nature by their parents, both biologists. See the entry > Examples: “A radical political commentator who turned to children's literature late in life, [Carlo] Collodi wrote a complex, unsettling novel—miles away from the morality tale that Pinocchio's story has become. Collodi's is a multilayered work of fiction that, although primarily aimed at young readers, is imbued with social criticism and pessimistic humor, and can be read, among other things, as an irreverent attack on established authority.” — Anna Momigliano, The Atlantic, 12 Sept. 2022 Did you know? Like its synonym infuse, imbue implies the introduction of one thing into another so as to affect it throughout. Someone's voice can be imbued with pride, for example, or a photograph might be imbued with a sense of melancholy. In the past imbue has also been used synonymously with imbrue, an obscure word meaning “to drench or stain,” but the two words are likely unrelated. Imbue comes from the Latin verb imbuere, meaning “to dye, wet, or moisten.” Imbrue has been traced back through Anglo-French and Old French to the Latin verb bibere, meaning “to drink.”

Pinocchio: The real story of the mischievous wooden puppet

Pinocchio is a cultural icon. He is the wooden puppet who can talk and walk. A cheerful headstrong character who keeps breaking the rules, and whose dream is to become a real boy. His story has been the subject of many retellings, and his growing nose when he lies has become a way to satirise politicians the world over. But Pinocchio's origins are largely unknown outside Italy, and couldn't be more different from his portrayal in the 1940 Disney film. The original novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by the 19th century Italian writer Carlo Collodi is much darker and brutal, and originally ended with Pinocchio's execution, but it was also a way of educating the children of a newly unified Italy. The actual literary text also provided a model, which is still used today, for a more standardised form of the Italian language. So why has Collodi's original – which is one of the most translated books in the world and one of the most adapted – been largely ignored and why should we go back to it? Joining Bridget Kendall is Dr Katia Pizzi, the director of the Italian Cultural Institute in London, who is the editor and co-author of Pinocchio, puppets and modernity: the mechanical body; Cristina Mazzoni, Professor of Romance Languages and Cultures at the University of Vermont, and editor and translator of The Pomegranates and other Modern Italian Fairy Tales; and Dr Georgia Panteli, Lecturer in Film and Comparative Literature at the University of Vienna and University College London, and author of From Puppet to Cyborg.
