Mumsy — described as a tiny little bird of a woman at 105 pounds — went full superhuman after being administered medication that did not agree with her, requiring five adults (including two men, Queenie is quick to note) to safely get her back into bed. She was subsequently assigned one-on-one monitoring with what Queenie cheerfully describes as "a robot looking thing" watching her around the clock. Thursday was, in Queenie's words, a completely lost day. But by the time they're recording, Mumsy is up with a walker, fully participating in therapy, and apparently chatty as ever — which, given the steroid-fueled word avalanche Queenie witnessed upon transfer, seems to be something of a baseline.The path forward is genuinely uncertain: subacute care may follow, options are limited while oxygen stays in the picture, and Queenie is doing what she can, which right now means taking it a day at a time and trying to get to her grandchildren when she can squeeze it in.From the heavy to the delightful: TT received a birthday gift while the two were celebrating on the Cape, and it's a game called Ganja Land — a cannabis-themed Candyland knockoff from the brand Lightly Toasted. TT, who has not yet played it, gives an enthusiastic rundown: eight character pieces (including Mary Jane Mermaid, The Royal Highness, and Weedly Wizard, all dressed appropriately for the occasion), a board full of hidden objects for timed scavenger hunts, trivia cards, fun facts, and a Spotify playlist to set the mood. The goal is to reach the Cannabis Castle and claim the cannabis crown — a bedazzled, marijuana-leaf-encrusted upgrade on the Burger King paper crown. Gameplay involves passing a joint to the left per Ganja Land tradition, and turn order follows the same direction. TT and Queenie immediately begin plotting to play virtually or in person come October.Then Queenie brings an article she'd flagged from Time magazine: what to do when someone gives you the silent treatment. The timing is personal. She'd reached out to a friend she'd lost touch with — wrote a note, explained a difficult five-year stretch, opened the door. Got nothing back. Not even, as she puts it, a fuck you. The article's framework is practical: distinguish between a healthy pause and a deliberate withdrawal, send one calm non-accusatory message, do not chase, do not retaliate with more silence, don't apologize just to get a reaction. When contact resumes: lead with curiosity, describe impact without assuming intent, and if the silence is a pattern rather than a moment, maybe look hard at whether the relationship is worth the real estate it's taking up in your head.Queenie's takeaway is quieter than the article's framework. Reading it gave her permission to let it go — to acknowledge she'd done her part, fulfilled what she calls "the social contract," and move on. TT points out, warmly but pointedly, that reaching out at all was the brave move. It was. And the non-response is its own answer.Which connects to the Fucket List addition: you do not have to respond to everything. Queenie originally pulled this out as a parenting tool — when kids are being fresh or challenging or saying things that don't actually require your engagement, you give yourself permission to just not. She's had to resurrect it lately, for adults. For family situations. For the nurses at the hospital asking her how Mumsy likes her nasal cannula. (Her answer: "What would you do if I wasn't here? Do that.") The relief of not needing to be the one with every answer — not needing to fix, explain, defend, or respond to everything lobbed at you — is, it turns out, just as applicable at 60-something as it was when her kids were teenagers.The episode closes on a more tender note. While the women were on the Cape, two significant losses happened: Dolly Parton and Gloria Steinem. Both are acknowledged with the kind of genuine warmth you can't fake. For Steinem, Queenie has a specific recommendation: Netflix's Final Words — a pre-recorded interview filmed in the last couple of years, designed to air only after her death. Remote cameras, no crew, just Steinem knowing this would be her last on-camera words. Queenie watched it the night Steinem died. She calls it powerful. She and TT had been soaking up the final glorious days of Cape Cod — doing absolutely nothing of consequence, seaside, blissfully unbothered — when Queenie got the call. Mumsy had taken a fall on her way in from her program. Smashed pelvis. Fractured sacrum. Twenty-four hours in the ER. And Queenie was five-plus hours away in Truro, Massachusetts.Enter Lauren — Queenie's daughter, a registered nurse, who had literally just come off her own shift when the call came in and immediately redirected herself to St. Peter's Hospital to be with Gigi. Which, thank God, because what unfolded in that ER was a master class in how not to treat a ninety-three-year-old woman with multiple fractures and mild cognitive disorder. Gigi spent hours on a stretcher in a hallway. No fluids. No pain management. Lauren sat in the waiting room in her scrubs for three hours before she could even get back to her mother. A physician didn't lay eyes on her until the early hours of the morning — twelve hours in. They were also apparently going to send her home, and the only thing that stopped that was the fact that Gigi was having trouble oxygenating. Which is terrifying, and also accidentally the thing that saved her.Queenie is cautiously optimistic that Gigi will be transferred to Sunnyview, an acute rehab facility, with Lauren quietly working every connection she has to make it happen. The physician reviewer initially declined the transfer — and then apparently learned he was "dealing with a VIP" and reversed course. So. Lauren's getting things done.Meanwhile, TT is recording from the Cape on her last day — computer balanced on four puzzle boxes, microphone rattling every time she shifts on the bed, doing her absolute best. She's not ready to leave. Nobody ever is. Honey spotted a great white shark in the bay with his binoculars (there had already been a sighting from a boat the day before, so he knew what he was looking at). A seal was hanging out ten feet off the beach. TT's sister Mare found two rocks shaped like sharks and everyone is coming home with a collection of found treasures. TT found a nose. An actual rock nose. They both save boxes — Apple boxes are singled out as particularly premium — and they are completely unapologetic about this.There is a brief and important moment of grief for the inflatable island, a large and unwieldy float that had served them well but had been slowly losing air all week despite a duct-tape patch job that was, by their own admission, not exactly precision work. With the combined assistance of TT's three sons and two daughters-in-law, the island was retired with dignity. They're reconfiguring for something more age-appropriate going forward. A parasol was suggested.The episode's "What Have You Consumed Today" check-in: Queenie is smoking Mendo Purps dog walkers from Hepworth — tiny little things, perfect for microdosing, very cute. TT scored her gummies, which have apparently been rebranded from "Hummies" to "Tree Works." TT took half of one five-milligram. They are both doing what they need to do to stay on an even keel.The "Wait, What?" segment this week is a roundup of things people only discovered about their partners after moving in together. One sock removed hours before bed, the other stays on — nobody knows why. Three hundred used contact lenses tossed behind the headboard instead of the trash. Popcorn eaten with bites of lettuce, apparently a whole-family tradition. Coffee cups left a quarter full in random locations throughout the home. Cabinets never quite closed, jar lids never quite tightened — this one lands especially hard given that Queenie points out they paid serious money for self-closing cabinets and drawers that are somehow being actively defeated. No consistent spot for keys or wallet, leading to morning chaos. Overfilling plates, eating half, leaving the rest by the sink. TT's real grievance surfaces: leaving two chips in a bag, two kernels in the popcorn, one sad schmear of cream cheese. Why. TT poses the actual important question here: how many people confronted these behaviors, and how many have just been quietly simmering for forty years? Queenie, speaking from experience, gives the simmering option roughly forty-odd years before it erupts — probably over something completely unrelated.TT's Choice, the segment where TT picks a number between one and seventy-five, lands on twenty-five: "What if you had to live your mother's exact life? What's the first thing you'd change?" TT goes straight to money — her family lived in poverty, and she'd change that first, with the hope it might have kept her grandfather from becoming violent toward her grandmother. Queenie's mind goes immediately to her own grandfather, who suffered what was then called a "nervous breakdown," was institutionalized for years, declared legally incompetent, and received electroshock therapy — which Queenie's mother witnessed firsthand during her nursing school psych rotation. Both women find themselves trying to undo pain for their mothers, trying to remove the source of trauma. Then they catch themselves: would changing those things mean their mothers — or they themselves — would be the same people? Probably not. It's a real question with no clean answer, and they sit in it for a moment.From there, the conversation drifts into what they would change about their own lives. Queenie says she'd want more awareness — more information, more sense of what was possible. She never considered going away to school, never even thought about working a summer on the Cape, not because she said no but because the option simply never materialized in her mind. It wasn't available to her as a concept. They talk about the generation-wide narrowing of possibility for women — a classmate who was explicitly told her parents wouldn't fund architecture school because she had brothers. Someone had to be the one to get educated. It wasn't going to be her. Queenie and TT both landed in human services almost by a kind of collegial suggestion — TT picked it, and Queenie thought: service to humans, helping people, I can do that. And she could.Queenie reflects on nursing — something she considered but rejected because she didn't trust her own instincts, feared paralysis by analysis, couldn't imagine the decisiveness it requires. She has enormous respect for nurses for exactly that reason. Which brings it back to Lauren, and to TT's sister Mary, and to what nurses actually do every single day — the compassion, the common sense, the ability to think outside the box under pressure, the advocacy. The Fucket List entry for the week is exactly that: fuck it to professionals who treat vulnerable people without dignity. Queenie's quiet fury about Gigi's twelve hours in a hallway, alone, unexamined, in pain — it comes through clearly. And her equally quiet point about what happens to people who don't have a Lauren in their corner, who don't have someone who knows what questions to ask and won't back down — that one lands hard.The episode closes with TT packing up in Truro, stopping in Albany to see her sister before the long drive home, sand in her shoes, rocks in her bags, already mourning the version of herself that got to live here for a while. The outro poem/song is beautiful — salt still drying on skin, the bay deciding your schedule, going sane by surrendering to it. "I'm leaving softer than I came and heavier than I."Same, TT. Same. Fancy a playdate that's to die for? Join Mumsy, Nanny, and their darling (if slightly overaged) Sonny and Girly! This charmingly unhinged family just adores making new friends and luring them back to their quaint estate for endless games. Just remember: follow the rules, or it's permanent naptime! Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny and Girly (1970) Get ready for a rollicking, if rather unnerving, trip to the countryside with Freddie Francis's 1970 cult delight, "Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny and Girly"! Forget your typical family get-togethers; this aristocratic British clan, tucked away in their gloriously crumbling Gothic pile, has a very peculiar idea of fun, and it's all part of their never-ending, ever-so-slightly lethal "Game." Meet the players, won't you? There's Mumsy (Ursula Howells), the lady of the manor, whose honeyed tones could charm the birds from the trees – right before she plots their untimely demise. Then we have dear old Nanny (Pat Heywood), ever loyal, ever simmering, and a stickler for the family's rather unique traditions. And who could forget the children? Sonny (Howard Trevor) and Girly (Vanessa Howard) are grown-ups who've hit the pause button on maturing, preferring school uniforms and a particularly sinister brand of playtime. Their favourite pastime? Inviting charming chaps, affectionately dubbed "New Friends," back to their secluded estate for a jolly good… well, let's just say it rarely ends with a polite thank-you note. You see, these "New Friends" quickly discover that their weekend invitation comes with a few rather peculiar house rules. They're expected to join in the family's whimsical, if decidedly menacing, games. Pop a clanger, try to leg it, or generally spoil the fun? Well, that's a one-way ticket to "meeting the angels," a quaint family euphemism for a rather permanent departure, often captured on Sonny's home movie camera for a bit of fireside entertainment. The film wastes no time in showing us how previous guests have fared – it's not pretty, but it's frightfully inventive! Now, the real sport begins when a particularly sharp "New Friend" (the rather dapper Michael Bryant) wanders into their web. Unlike the others, this chap's got his wits about him. He starts to notice the little cracks in this picture of domestic bliss: the glint of jealousy between Mumsy and Nanny, the oddly chummy vibes between Sonny and Girly, and young Girly's rather blossoming, if thoroughly confused, interest in him. Our clever "New Friend" decides it's time to shake things up a bit, playing the family members off against each other like a maestro of mischief. He turns on the charm, especially with the ladies, and watches the sparks fly! Girly's head over heels, Mumsy sees a new star for her manipulative little shows, and Nanny? Well, Nanny's green-eyed monster is having a field day. Sonny, bless his cotton socks, just wants things back to the way they were and gets increasingly tetchy. As our "New Friend" pulls the strings, the once-sacred rules of "The Game" get hilariously, and then dangerously, twisted. It's not the captive causing the chaos anymore; it's the captors themselves, all clamouring for his attention and a slice of the power pie. The previously united, if terrifyingly bonkers, family starts to come apart at the seams, tumbling towards a climax that's as wildly entertaining as it is darkly satisfying. "Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny and Girly" is a cheeky poke at the old stiff upper lip and the very idea of a 'proper' family, all wrapped up in a deliciously dark and witty package. It's less about the blood and guts and more about the spine-tingling giggles and the sheer audacity of a household where innocence and insanity go hand-in-hand. So, if you fancy a film that's truly one of a kind, step into their parlour – just be sure you know the rules of "The Game"!
