(23:25) The NBA MVP Race stays hot, with Shai-Gilgeous Alexander currently leading the charge according to DraftKings Sportsbook. SGA is having a monster year, but 3-time MVP Nikola Jokic is having a record year in some of his own stat categories. A new year sets off an explosive podcast as I commence another year of sports talk. On deck: (6:35) Sending well wishes to you and yours for a prosperous, happy and healthy New Year. Which can't be said if you're Boise State, Arizona State and Oregon. The three bye teams fail to reach the semifinals in the college football playoff. Boise State played a poor game (their head coach didn't think so. Seriously?), but give credit to Penn State in thwarting the Heisman Trophy runner up Ashton Jeanty as they upset the Broncos. You had a classic finish to a not so classic game (I'll explain) as Texas shows grit and toughness to beat Arizona State in 2 OT's. As Oregon failed to show up vs. a game Ohio State team as they blew the doors off of the Ducks perfect season in the Rose Bowl. We still have another game (Notre Dame-Georgia) that was postponed last night due to the senseless act on the streets of New Orleans the night before. I'll rehash all that took place as we inch closer to the final four next Thursday and Friday. (31:20) We've reached the final week of the NFL regular season. I'll unpack the very little drama that we should expect over the weekend when it comes to playoff possibilities for Miami, Cincinnati & Atlanta. I'll share my thoughts on why Saquon Barkley should've started vs. the Giants in pursuit of the all time single season rushing record. And is this the end of Aaron Rodgers's NFL career as it could possibly be his last game vs. the Dolphins on Sunday? Will the owner bring him back? Should they just blow it up? (48:10) The hot topics in the Association over the past few days have been LeBron James turning 40, saying he can play 5-7 more years, but won't. How long will he play? Is he doing this to cement his Laker legacy? Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is your MVP of the league, said T'wolves All-Star guard Anthony Edwards. Is it too early to discuss this? Is there truth to this? What kind of year is defending MVP Nikola Jokic having to this point? I'll see which teams are hot (Cavs, Knicks, Thunder) and peek at an interesting schedule of games over the weekend. (59:35) On the ice, the NHL had their Winter Classic on New Year's Eve, which ended up being a dud. St. Louis easily beats Chicago at Wrigley Field in a 6-2 win. Meanwhile, the Rangers continue to spiral out of control. Not only are they in the midst of a four game losing streak, but they'll miss their goaltender Igor Shesterkin for at least three games with an upper body injury. Could the head coach be on his way out? I'll also peruse what else is going on in the standings and schedule over the next three days leading into next week. Later, J-Mac recaps a wild finish in New York that saw the Knicks literally steal Game 2 from the Philadelphia 76ers to take a 2-0 series lead, why it's clear that Joel Embiid might not be the emotional leader the Sixers need him to be and whether the negative narratives surrounding Tom Thibodeau are warranted. On the latest episode of "From the Point by Trae Young," the second in conjunction with Bleacher Report, NBA Champion Michael Porter Jr. joins AAU Teammate-turned-friend Trae Young and co-host Winston for some introspective, honest, and raw conversation. MPJ, who recently won an NBA title with the Denver Nuggets, opens up about his back injury leading up to the NBA draft – one of the first times he has told the full story. Porter Jr. also discusses his teenage AAU team with Trae, which they consider the greatest ever. After that, the high-scoring forward dives into his Denver Nuggets team, where he talks about the title, MVP Nikola Jokic's love for horses, and what life has been like since winning the Championship. The duo also discuss workouts with Stephen Curry, the best passers in the NBA, and Luka Doncic. Thanks for listening to "From The Point" by Trae Young. The CHGO Bulls crew discuss whether Zach LaVine is underrated as one of the best clutch scorers in the NBA. A tweet from NBA University revealed that LaVine has actually been one of the most lethal clutch time bucket-getters in the league over the past 5 years. LaVine has the most clutch field goals against four different teams in that span. Only two-time MVP Nikola Jokic has done so against as many teams. It's also well known by Bulls fans that LaVine can struggle with decision-making and turnovers in clutch moments. So how can both of these things be true? Matt and Big Dave ponder this statistical oddity. Plus, they break down the Nuggets' historic Game 3 win over the Heat in the NBA Finals. Marcus Thompson from The Athletic joins Vince Goodwill to talk their way through the 2023 NBA Playoffs, with some extra time spent on the present and future of the Golden State Warriors and their star players (Steph Curry, Draymond Green & Klay Thompson).01:45 Steph Curry10:20 Draymond Green17:30 Devin Booker22:00 Nikola Jokic28:50 Heat up 2-1 over Knicks32:50 Steve Kerr36:10 76ers-Celtics are tied 2-2Marcus Thompson from The Athletic joins Vince Goodwill to talk their way through the 2023 NBA Playoffs, starting with Steph Curry and what fans should be expecting from him heading into Game 4 against the Lakers tonight.Draymond Green isn't just vital to the Warriors' chances of winning, Marcus says that they can't win without him. Which version of Draymond shows up tonight and what does his future hold if another team offers him more money in free agency than Golden State is willing to?Devin Booker has arguably been the MVP of the 2023 NBA Playoffs (so far), and Vince sees a comparison between Booker and Steph Curry that he lays out before the conversation turns to former 2-time MVP Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets. Did Jokic know he was pushing the Suns owner? Why are we always talking about his legacy? And why are we expecting Jokic to, at some point, win a championship? It's obvious how important coaching has been through the first couple rounds of the NBA Playoffs, but it is most noticeable in the Heat/Knicks series where Erik Spoelstra is doing a wonderful job of leading a series with far less talent on his team. That leads the guys back to Steve Kerr, and how he has become a better coach since the first run of titles he had with the Warriors. Finally, the guys end with a conversation about the very talented 76ers and potential redemption for James Harden as a playoff superstar. There's a path for Philadelphia to win a title this year, but it will depend on Harden (and Doc) showing up and proving playoff doubters wrong.Check out the rest of the Yahoo Sports podcast family at https://apple.co/3zEuTQj or at Yahoo Sports PodcastsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
