Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 31, 2026 is: permutation per-myoo-TAY-shun noun Permutation is a formal word for any one of the many different ways or forms in which something exists or can be arranged. It can also refer to a major or fundamental change in something based primarily on rearrangement of its existing elements. Permutation is usually used in its plural form. // Early permutations of the design look nothing like the final result. // The system has gone through several permutations. See the entry > Examples: “Megadeth have weathered nearly all of metal's generational permutations, only once deviating from their ... formula with 1999's infamously confused country'n'industrial mish-mash, Risk.” — Eli Enis, Pitchfork, 26 Jan. 2026 Did you know? “Ch-ch-changes!” David Bowie sang memorably in his classic (and appropriately titled) hit “Changes,” which concerns the phenomenon of artistic reinvention—something Bowie knew a lot about. In fact, he could have titled the song “Permutations,” though we admit that the word would have been a bit clunkier to sing. Permutation is, after all, all about change—specifically change (as in character or condition) of something based primarily on rearrangement of its existing elements. For example, Bowie's artistic persona went through many permutations over the course of his career, from the alien rock star Ziggy Stardust to the aristocratic Thin White Duke, with the common denominator—the existing elements—being Bowie himself. (Permutation can also be used for a form or variety resulting from such changes, and can thus refer to Bowie's individual personae as well.) Permutation, perhaps ironically, has not changed all that much since it was borrowed into Middle English from Anglo-French as permutacioun.

Blackburn Rovers' point against Coventry City has put them within touching distance of Championship safety ahead of a huge midweek of games. Elliott Jackson and Ryan Hildred discuss that and plenty more on the latest episode of Arte et Labore podcast. Though there was disappointment after Bobby Thomas' late equaliser, Rovers extended their gap over the bottom three to five points after results over the weekend. It means they could wrap up survival with a win at Sheffield United and a favour elsewhere. That would give them 10 days to relax rather than sweat over a final-day showdown against Leicester City. Blackburn Rovers' gap to the bottom three was cut from six points to four despite a point at Stoke City. Michael O'Neill's side remain five games unbeaten but results elsewhere mean a draw in the Potteries has seen their safety blanket cut down. Is it a point gained or two dropped at the weekend? Rovers are gearing up for a very difficult week, away at Southampton and at home to Coventry City. Can they cause more upsets against the big boys or will it be too much for a depleted squad? Plus an overall view of the relegation battle with Leicester City now four points adrift and West Brom facing a potential points deduction. On today's page, Menachot 59, we finally receive a comprehensive list of which meal offerings require oil and frankincense—and which do not. While this clarity seems long overdue, the rabbis' timing is intentional. By delaying this "instruction manual," the Talmud forces us to first understand the staggering complexity of the human soul. Discover why the path to forgiveness is never a simple transaction, but a deeply nuanced process tailored to the specific circumstances of every mistake. Listen and find out.
Newcastle's season is at a crossroads, and Ed and Olly dive deep into it all. They break down the Aston Villa defeat with full positives-and-negatives (Miley's emergence, Botman's resurgence, and a blunt forward line), ask hard questions about Eddie Howe's tactics and striker isolation, and debate whether this campaign can still be classed as a “success.”They unpack January transfer limbo, PSR confusion after the Isak sale, and the growing injury list with Bruno and Joelinton doubts. Then it's all eyes on Paris: detailed PSG preview, Champions League permutations (what a win, draw, or defeat actually means), and how Newcastle can approach their biggest away test under Howe with a playoff place already secured.Plus: Patreon questions on FFP, missing out on Europe, and whether Howe's training-ground plans are translating on matchdays, and a fun quiz on the players who've worn both Newcastle and PSG colours.--------------JOIN OUR PATREON for so much moreFollow us on Twitter/X @nufcblogcastPlease consider giving us a good review if you enjoy what you hear!See all our episodes here - https://shows.acast.com/nufcblogcast Hosted on Acast. We are back from an international break to begin the countdown towards the climax of the season – our live show in Rascals on Monday November 3 with tickets going on sale on Wednesday. Oh, and there's the end of a thrilling European race, the playoff battle and the prospect of an FAI Cup Final at the Aviva Stadium where the fans – and not the SHOUTY PA GUY – will hopefully provide the volume. That's a bit of a garbage time rant in a show which is heaven for those who like permutations as the lads unpick the significance of the weekend's results with Johnny, fresh back from Dalymount, gathering the thoughts of both Stephen O'Donnell and Barry Baggley. Johnny tackles some criticism from Shels heads with the same relish he approaches small talk at a creche, a starter to a diverse mailbag that veers from Flann O'Brien to Usher before ending up in the cycle lane. As ever, we're trying to stay on the right track with the help of Sport Cosanta, Future Ticketing, Collar & Cuff and Rascals Brewing.

The NFL regular season is nearing its completion and only a handful of teams are left with playoff spots to play for or draft positioning to worry about. But just how big of a mistake did the New York Giants make by beating the Colts and will the Bengals or Falcons be able to sneak into the playoffs in Week 18? Plus, is Saquon Barkley a Hall of Famer and just how important should the single-season rushing record be to his legacy? Why the Aaron Rodgers documentary reveals just how boring he is. And should dogs be allowed on planes?

A new year sets off an explosive podcast as I commence another year of sports talk. On deck: (6:35) Sending well wishes to you and yours for a prosperous, happy and healthy New Year. Which can't be said if you're Boise State, Arizona State and Oregon. The three bye teams fail to reach the semifinals in the college football playoff. Boise State played a poor game (their head coach didn't think so. Seriously?), but give credit to Penn State in thwarting the Heisman Trophy runner up Ashton Jeanty as they upset the Broncos. You had a classic finish to a not so classic game (I'll explain) as Texas shows grit and toughness to beat Arizona State in 2 OT's. As Oregon failed to show up vs. a game Ohio State team as they blew the doors off of the Ducks perfect season in the Rose Bowl. We still have another game (Notre Dame-Georgia) that was postponed last night due to the senseless act on the streets of New Orleans the night before. I'll rehash all that took place as we inch closer to the final four next Thursday and Friday. (31:20) We've reached the final week of the NFL regular season. I'll unpack the very little drama that we should expect over the weekend when it comes to playoff possibilities for Miami, Cincinnati & Atlanta. I'll share my thoughts on why Saquon Barkley should've started vs. the Giants in pursuit of the all time single season rushing record. And is this the end of Aaron Rodgers's NFL career as it could possibly be his last game vs. the Dolphins on Sunday? Will the owner bring him back? Should they just blow it up? (48:10) The hot topics in the Association over the past few days have been LeBron James turning 40, saying he can play 5-7 more years, but won't. How long will he play? Is he doing this to cement his Laker legacy? Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is your MVP of the league, said T'wolves All-Star guard Anthony Edwards. Is it too early to discuss this? Is there truth to this? What kind of year is defending MVP Nikola Jokic having to this point? I'll see which teams are hot (Cavs, Knicks, Thunder) and peek at an interesting schedule of games over the weekend. (59:35) On the ice, the NHL had their Winter Classic on New Year's Eve, which ended up being a dud. St. Louis easily beats Chicago at Wrigley Field in a 6-2 win. Meanwhile, the Rangers continue to spiral out of control. Not only are they in the midst of a four game losing streak, but they'll miss their goaltender Igor Shesterkin for at least three games with an upper body injury. Could the head coach be on his way out? I'll also peruse what else is going on in the standings and schedule over the next three days leading into next week. Whenever there is a lottery, the odds of winning are given. If you go to a pizzeria, they might tell you the number of possible pizzas that can be made, given their toppings. If you have a combination lock, it is secured because of the number of different solutions that are possible. All of these things might seem different, but they are all part of the same branch of mathematics. Justin Gardiner is the author of two nonfiction books and a collection of poetry. His most recent title is the book-length lyric essay Small Altars, published by Tupelo Press in 2024. Besides his role as Nonfiction Editor for Southern Humanities Review, Justin is also an Associate Professor at Auburn University. Founded in 1967, SHR considers subject matter both within and beyond the South. The magazine has had Justin Gardiner as its nonfiction editor for the past half decade. Four essays are discussed in the episode, with most of all of them showing evidence of the associative qualities that Gardiner, as a poet, enjoys in whatever genre. In this case, we started with Lisa Greenwell's essay “Your Soul Doesn't Need You.” While ostensibly an essay about a carjacking she experienced, it goes wider to consider alike how well both more cognitively based therapy and poetry that speaks to one's soul can aid recovery. In Leslie Stainton's “Here with You,” an understanding of how the artist Joseph Cornell's boxes reflect his life with a brother who suffered from cerebral palsy parallels the circumstances of the author's own, younger sister. Delicacy is the order of the day. In Ceridwen Hall's essay, “Submarine Reconnaissance: Bodies, Permutations, Voyages,” Hall delves into whether submarines are “female” (as her mom believes) or a “he” when in combat, along with many fascinating aspects of serving aboard a submarine and the “aquatic” nature of our memories and the way we must constantly “refit” our thinking. The other, remaining essay, Jennifer Taylor-Skinner's “I Don't Want Somebody in My House,” highlights the grand piano that serves as her companion, in contrast to how an esoteric French composer (Erik Satie) had two baby grand pianos stacked atop each other in his southern France villa. Again, expect the unexpected. Dan Hill, PhD, is the author of ten books and leads Sensory Logic, Inc. To check out his related “Dan Hill's EQ Spotlight” blog, visit this site.
