It's Chip Strategy season! With the FA Cup 3rd round concluded for Premier League sides and with the draw for the 4th round now known Suj and James plot plans for using Chips in FPL for the rest of the season. And this year there's the added complication of the Assistant Manager Chip, so should it be used early on Arne Slot or do better opportunities await later in the season for other managers? There's also coverage of when might be best to use the Triple Captain Chip, which might be the biggest and best week for the Bench Boost, and with many of the Chips used best in a Double Gameweek does than mean the Free Hit should be used as a shield in a Blank Gameweek? Permutations and possibilities covered, including when FPL managers may want to use the second Wildcard and how it can set up for Chip usage. The NFL regular season is nearing its completion and only a handful of teams are left with playoff spots to play for or draft positioning to worry about. But just how big of a mistake did the New York Giants make by beating the Colts and will the Bengals or Falcons be able to sneak into the playoffs in Week 18? Plus, is Saquon Barkley a Hall of Famer and just how important should the single-season rushing record be to his legacy? Why the Aaron Rodgers documentary reveals just how boring he is. And should dogs be allowed on planes?

A new year sets off an explosive podcast as I commence another year of sports talk. On deck: (6:35) Sending well wishes to you and yours for a prosperous, happy and healthy New Year. Which can't be said if you're Boise State, Arizona State and Oregon. The three bye teams fail to reach the semifinals in the college football playoff. Boise State played a poor game (their head coach didn't think so. Seriously?), but give credit to Penn State in thwarting the Heisman Trophy runner up Ashton Jeanty as they upset the Broncos. You had a classic finish to a not so classic game (I'll explain) as Texas shows grit and toughness to beat Arizona State in 2 OT's. As Oregon failed to show up vs. a game Ohio State team as they blew the doors off of the Ducks perfect season in the Rose Bowl. We still have another game (Notre Dame-Georgia) that was postponed last night due to the senseless act on the streets of New Orleans the night before. I'll rehash all that took place as we inch closer to the final four next Thursday and Friday. (31:20) We've reached the final week of the NFL regular season. I'll unpack the very little drama that we should expect over the weekend when it comes to playoff possibilities for Miami, Cincinnati & Atlanta. I'll share my thoughts on why Saquon Barkley should've started vs. the Giants in pursuit of the all time single season rushing record. And is this the end of Aaron Rodgers's NFL career as it could possibly be his last game vs. the Dolphins on Sunday? Will the owner bring him back? Should they just blow it up? (48:10) The hot topics in the Association over the past few days have been LeBron James turning 40, saying he can play 5-7 more years, but won't. How long will he play? Is he doing this to cement his Laker legacy? Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is your MVP of the league, said T'wolves All-Star guard Anthony Edwards. Is it too early to discuss this? Is there truth to this? What kind of year is defending MVP Nikola Jokic having to this point? I'll see which teams are hot (Cavs, Knicks, Thunder) and peek at an interesting schedule of games over the weekend. (59:35) On the ice, the NHL had their Winter Classic on New Year's Eve, which ended up being a dud. St. Louis easily beats Chicago at Wrigley Field in a 6-2 win. Meanwhile, the Rangers continue to spiral out of control. Not only are they in the midst of a four game losing streak, but they'll miss their goaltender Igor Shesterkin for at least three games with an upper body injury. Could the head coach be on his way out? I'll also peruse what else is going on in the standings and schedule over the next three days leading into next week. Justin Gardiner is the author of two nonfiction books and a collection of poetry. His most recent title is the book-length lyric essay Small Altars, published by Tupelo Press in 2024. Besides his role as Nonfiction Editor for Southern Humanities Review, Justin is also an Associate Professor at Auburn University. Founded in 1967, SHR considers subject matter both within and beyond the South. The magazine has had Justin Gardiner as its nonfiction editor for the past half decade. Four essays are discussed in the episode, with most of all of them showing evidence of the associative qualities that Gardiner, as a poet, enjoys in whatever genre. In this case, we started with Lisa Greenwell's essay “Your Soul Doesn't Need You.” While ostensibly an essay about a carjacking she experienced, it goes wider to consider alike how well both more cognitively based therapy and poetry that speaks to one's soul can aid recovery. In Leslie Stainton's “Here with You,” an understanding of how the artist Joseph Cornell's boxes reflect his life with a brother who suffered from cerebral palsy parallels the circumstances of the author's own, younger sister. Delicacy is the order of the day. In Ceridwen Hall's essay, “Submarine Reconnaissance: Bodies, Permutations, Voyages,” Hall delves into whether submarines are “female” (as her mom believes) or a “he” when in combat, along with many fascinating aspects of serving aboard a submarine and the “aquatic” nature of our memories and the way we must constantly “refit” our thinking. The other, remaining essay, Jennifer Taylor-Skinner's “I Don't Want Somebody in My House,” highlights the grand piano that serves as her companion, in contrast to how an esoteric French composer (Erik Satie) had two baby grand pianos stacked atop each other in his southern France villa. Again, expect the unexpected. Dan Hill, PhD, is the author of ten books and leads Sensory Logic, Inc. To check out his related “Dan Hill's EQ Spotlight” blog, visit this site. They explore River's paper on idealism and its connection to Stephen Wolfram's work, as well as Gabe's experiences with Kundalini awakening and his exploration of entropy. They discuss different perspectives on the Ruliad and consciousness, the nature of time and the past, and the value of embracing paradox and limitations. The role of chaos and order in consciousness is examined, along with the connection between information and relationships. The discussion also touches on the cyclical nature of materialism and the incompleteness of models. The relationship between quantum mechanics and consciousness is discussed, as well as the role of AI in the collective consciousness. The future of consciousness are also examined, along with the dream as a model of consciousness. On today's show, we're zooming in on the NFL as we hit Week 18 and there's still a whole lot to be decided. The 1 seeds are set in both conferences, but everything else will be sorted this weekend, with 2 games on Saturday and a busy slate on Sunday. The marquee matchup is for the AFC East, as the Dolphins and Bills play for the division, but the AFC South is still up for grabs between the Jags, Colts and Texans and there are 3 available Playoff spots for 5 teams with the Steelers, Colts and Texans all needing help to get in. In the NFC, the East is still up for grabs with the Cowboys in control over the Eagles and the Bucs needing a win to edge out the Falcons and Saints, and we have 2 spots for 6 teams with most of them needing help. It gets convoluted for sure, but that's just more drama for Sunday. Meanwhile, in the NBA, we're already more than a third of the way through the season, so we welcome the casual fans who don't start paying attention until after Christmas into the fold, but that also means the trade deadline is about a month away, and the Knicks and Raptors got us started on what I predict to be a busy month in the talent exchange market, with OG Anunoby headed to NY. Then, we take a look around the MVP race so far, and give our takes on the three players who should be legitimately considered. I love SGA but Gaber shoots down his case, Tatum isn't even close when Giannis is probably being overlooked, and AD is all but forgotten, so with Joel Embiid playing even better than he did when he won the award last year and Jokic still the best player in the world, who is our third candidate? The Christmas Day extravaganza is in the books, and as always, this is when things start to heat up. So sit back, the NBA season is hitting its stride, the NFL season is down to the final week and we're breaking down how it's all unfolding, next on the Roundup Podcast so let's get rolling . . .

Counting is the basis of arithmetic. Before people could manipulate numbers, numbers had to exist. Counting was first done on the body, before it was done on apparatuses outside the body such as clay tablets and hard drives. However, counting has become an invaluable tool in mathematics itself, as became apparent when counting started to be examined analytically. How did counting begin?
