Anger is palpable in the streets of France today, as the recent killing of 17-year-old Nahel by police during a traffic stop ignited countrywide protests. Such large-scale unrest hadn't been seen since the Gilet Jaunes movement took off five years ago. As a result of this, and of his extremely unpopular pension reform – which also saw widespread protests – Emmanuel Macron's popularity has hit rock bottom, with support surging for both the far-right and the Left. What does all of this mean for people in France, and what lessons can be learned by those elsewhere in Europe? Join us for this vital conversation featuring Yanis Varoufakis, Julijana Zita, Erik Edman and the rest of our team, as well as our special guest, Stathis Kouvelakis. And remember to send us your comments and questions live!

Officially, the EU opposes annexation and considers illegal settlements in occupied territories an obstacle to international peace and stability. However, as with many other cases, what the EU states is far from its practices. Trade is still allowed between the European Single Market and these settlements, making their existence not only viable but economically profitable for the occupiers. As war is waged in Ukraine, and other tragically less popular conflicts continue to rage in Palestine, Yemen, Mali and across the world, we must take a stand against Europe's legacy of hypocrisy. This is why DiEM25 has joined forces with Human Rights Watch, independent Irish Senator Frances Black, and many others, in supporting the Stop Trade With Settlements campaign and in calling Israel an apartheid state. In this DiEM TV special, DiEM25 Political Director Erik Edman talks with independent Irish Senator Frances Black and Omar Shakir, Israel and Palestine Director at Human Rights Watch, about what it means to take a stand against illegal settlements, and — crucially — what people can do to help. If the protracted process of Brexit made anything clear it’s that nobody really knew what a vote for Brexit actually meant when they went into the voting booth. Deciding the type of Brexit was every bit as contentious as the decision to leave the EU in the first place. In the hope of avoiding similar issues in the future of this Island a group called Ireland’s Future is calling for us to start preparing for a referendum on Irish unity immediately. Senator Frances Black is the Chairperson of Ireland’s Future.

Singer, Songwriter, Composer Caleb Smith (aka Mista Smyth) is the lead singer and co-founder of Black Queen, "A tribute to Queen." Rumor has it that Black Queen has the largest world-wide following of any Queen tribute band with a straight African-American frontman:-). And of course, we at the End of the Road stridently adopt all rumors. Be sure to check out Caleb's original five full length albums and studio recordings here: https://mistasmyth.bandcamp.com/ The Black Queen official fan site is here: Black Queen site Check out one of their shows: Black Queen video Mary Frances is a college instructor in environmental science and has been displaying her found art assemblages in group exhibits throughout the midwest. Galleries which have shown her work include Woman Made Gallery in Chicago, Art St. Louis in St. Louis, and Oakland Community College near Detroit. Mary offers the following artists' statement: "I create assemblages primarily with found objects. Environmentalism influences me most as nature is the source of all things, including creativity. I find materials for my work anywhere, although primarily outdoors. Judging each object individually on size, weight, texture and color, I assemble them together. Eventually, unlike objects fit together in ways that make people think about unwanted things. These include environmental degradation, exploitation, and conflict. Some of pieces are satirical or simply interesting to look at. In the future I want to expand my base of materials and continue to express difficult as well as playful concepts." Mary's art pages and contact information can be found here: https://maryfrancesartistfoundart.webs.com/ https://maryfrancesartist.webs.com/ I would like to thank them both for coming and for Mary's kind gift of the official End of the Road wizard staff for future conjuring of everything good. From a bottle of wine a night, to gay teddy bears, ducks and climate change denial, it was a surreal and slightly insane week in Irish politics on the Floating Voter podcast. The team of Kevin Doyle, Niall O'Connor and Philip Ryan were joined by the singer and musician, Frances Black, who has also now been elected to the Seanad. Black's work with families affected by addiction through her Rise Foundation was part of the reason for her to stand for the Seanad election and she was candid and honest about her own struggles with alcohol. “My pattern of drinking was a bottle of wine a night,” she admitted. “But I didn't like the feeling of needing to have alcohol and not being able to give it up. For me it was causing a problem in my life because I didn't like the way it was making me feel, heightening my low self-esteem and sense of inadequacy. I didn't like the feeling of powerlessness it brought and so I decided to seek help. “You could have floored me when I was then told, ‘Yes Frances, you're an alcoholic'. I wasn't what we typically considered someone to be an alcoholic, falling around the place or waking up with the shakes. My family were shocked but they were also worried abut my drinking and my partner at the time wasn't happy about it either. It was hard, but that's when I gave it up.”
