It was a painful realization: relying on others to heal childhood wounds never truly worked. Growing up in a codependent family system, I often felt alone, even when surrounded by people. These dynamics stifled my personal growth, kept me emotionally dependent on others—especially that negative parent—and pulled me deeper into toxic relationships. Does this sound familiar? We should have been taught independence, autonomy, and self-reliance. We should have been prepared to enter the world with confidence and competence—but we weren't. If you've ever wondered why, consider this: Do you know how powerful it is for a parent to have a child who needs them for validation? That's addictive. More powerful than any drug. And it makes you easy to exploit and manipulate.Every disappointment, every betrayal, every hurt—it's all just another lesson. When you don't believe you can function on your own, you seek out relationships to compensate for that incompetence. You look for someone to take care of you, to fill the void when things get too hard, to handle the issues you don't want to face. And then, when they leave, you're right back where you started. The cycle repeats. It's time to start rooting for yourself and fighting for yourself. Stop wasting your energy on people who will never complete you. The painful truth is that no one else can fill the voids left from childhood. But once you accept that, you can begin breaking free from toxic patterns. You can reclaim your life, stand confidently on your own, and experience the empowerment that comes from truly knowing yourself. The goal isn't to need people—it's to want them. And when you finally prove to yourself that you don't need anyone else to survive in this world, that's when you'll be truly ready for genuine, healthy relationships.
HER Style Podcast | Buy Less, Shop Smarter, Build a Wardrobe You Love
Hello, Valentine! With the annual day of love approaching later this week, I thought it might be a good time to shift gears and focus on a little self-love today. Because we can definitely be our own worst critics. I've covered episodes on body image and eliminating negative self-talk on the podcast before. But today, I wanted to bring in a trusted expert to guide us around reclaiming our confidence, learning to love and treat our bodies well, and making exercise a habit that sticks. Whether you're a mom or not, I know 4 in 5 women worry about the appearance of their belly and waist! And my dear friend, Dr. Jena Bradley, is all about empowering us to strengthen and restore our cores both before and after pregnancy. Jena is a true triple threat, because she not only walks the walk as a very fit mom of 4 beautiful girls, she's also a physical therapist so she knows how to help women exercise in smart, safe, and effective ways, and she's the most incredible person I've ever met when it comes to time management. She juggles life with her 4 littles, volunteers at her church in the women's and children's ministry and continues to work as a physical therapist while running an Airbnb on the side. She does all this while maintaining a healthy lifestyle and growing her own online business. I tell her constantly that I don't know how she manages to do everything she does. And if you want to stay motivated with your workout routine, Dr. Jena will help you reach your fitness goals faster all while being a busy woman. She's definitely been a saving grace for me this past year. In today's episode, Jena offers up a handful of tips to strengthen and restore your core in just 2 minutes a day as well as by fitting exercise into some of the mundane tasks you're already doing, like sitting at a red light or waiting in line at the grocery store. Seriously, she makes working out insanely easy and fun! I know you're going to love her as much as I do and want to connect with her even more. So after you listen to our conversation, make sure you check out her blog and YouTube channel, Live Core Strong. And now she has a new podcast, The Fit Postpartum Mom, where she teaches quick workouts for busy new moms, with an emphasis on core strengthening first before all else. They thrive in toxic relationships where happiness hinges on external validation. They lack self-respect, self-discipline, and self-love. They don't love at all—they take hostages. But here's the truth: the prison door is open. You can walk out anytime you want. The only thing holding you back is fear. It's time to take responsibility and rediscover your self-respect. Gaslighting often stems from the perpetrator's own unresolved issues, but the power to lessen its effects lies within you. Changing your reactions can disrupt harmful patterns and create space for growth—not only for yourself but for those around you. Waiting for others to change is a losing game. Instead, focus on your own personal growth and self-acceptance. These are the tools you need to navigate and neutralize toxic dynamics effectively. When you emerge on the other side, gaslighting will lose its grip on you—because you simply won't care anymore. If you want a better life, start by getting to know yourself—the good, the bad, and the ugly. The deeper your self-awareness, the freer you become. They are stuck in time, and so are you. But gaslighting is no longer anyone else's responsibility except yours. Reclaim your self-worth, break free from the cycle, and step into a life defined by authenticity and inner peace.
Feeling Crazy? It's Not You – It's Perimenopause (Here's How to Fix It) Are you exhausted, moody, and struggling to sleep, only to be dismissed with the usual explanation that it's just stress or aging? Let's set the record straight—you're not crazy, they're wrong. In this episode, we're uncovering the truth about perimenopause with Amanda Swan, a Yale-trained nurse practitioner and founder of Swan Integrative Health and Wellness. Amanda is on a mission to transform women's health by empowering them with real solutions, not just surviving it. Perimenopause is not your enemy; it's your body's way of signaling that it needs support. Millions of women are left feeling exhausted, achy, and emotionally drained during this phase of life, and Amanda is here to change that. On this episode of the Medical Disruptor, we explore why so many women experience broken, restless sleep, the hidden causes of joint pain, and the hormonal imbalances behind wild mood swings. Amanda shares her approach to fix these issues rather than just masking symptoms. She also explains why women often receive conflicting responses from doctors, leaving them feeling frustrated and overlooked. If you've been told to “just deal with it,” this episode is a wake-up call. Whether you're experiencing the symptoms yourself, supporting a loved one, or preparing for what's ahead, Amanda's insights will equip you with the knowledge and confidence to take control of your health. The Medical Disruptor Podcast is a show broadcasted live by Dr. Efrat Lamandre every week with the express purpose of providing free, factual, and practical functional medicine tips to help people prevent disease naturally. Through giving healthy nutrition tips, tips on intermittent fasting, managing stress through diet, and advocating self improvement for her patients, Doctor E hopes to help you take control of your health destiny and become the GameChanger in your life. - Website: https://joeryan.com - Instagram: https://instagram.com/joeryan - Coaching: https://joeryan.com/coaching/ - Subscribe To All Episodes https://joeryan.com/subscribe/ It's Not You—It's Our Childhood Experiences Growing up, many of us felt the sting of neglect and carried the silent burden of our caregivers' unmet needs. This often molded us into perfectionists, constructing facades to ensure those around us were happy so we wouldn't face isolation or emotional banishment. As children, we learned that our sense of worth was tied to their approval, never understanding how to feel okay with ourselves if they weren't okay with us. As adults, we unknowingly replay these patterns in our relationships, prioritizing the love and validation of others over self-love. This realization is the true lightbulb moment. Understanding how these childhood experiences shape our adult relationships can reveal why we sometimes drift toward isolation. Embracing the courage to let others in and reveal the parts of ourselves we've been taught to hide is daunting, yet liberating. The journey to vulnerability may feel terrifying, but it's where we begin to heal and discover the power of self-belonging and self-care, mending our internal voids and building resilience against loss and rejection. This journey isn't just about personal growth; it's about connecting with a community that values the risks of being seen authentically. Can fear and vulnerability actually strengthen your relationships? The answer is a resounding yes. Self-hate and shame keep us trapped, sabotaging our relationships and keeping us from genuine connection. Most of us hesitate to let others in, afraid they'll see beyond our polished exterior. But that mask only perpetuates our isolation. It's time to let go of the façade and find the courage to gradually remove it, allowing ourselves to be truly seen.

It's time to move beyond blame and victimhood and embrace your personal power. The key to overcoming childhood wounds lies in understanding that your past does not control your future. Your self-worth and emotional intelligence are entirely within your hands. Healing is an internal process—one that doesn't rely on the validation or acceptance of those who raised you.Let's address the emotional challenge of setting boundaries and the discomfort that comes with it. When you set boundaries, anxiety and fear often arise, but rather than turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms, visualize these feelings and acknowledge them. This is the path to breaking the cycles of avoidance and shame.By learning to self-soothe and clearly communicate your boundaries, you'll discover how empowering it is to no longer depend on external validation. You'll reclaim your emotional independence and break free from old patterns of relying on others to determine your worth.Right now, an emotional battle is taking place within you—but the power to change it starts with boundaries. It's time to reclaim your peace and take control of your emotional well-being.Producer: Shelby Buckler

David Crosby was famous for nearly 60 years, a celebrity sustained by records, tours, brushes with the law and serial disagreements with old pals and collaborators (he was the very definition of a non-team player). We look back fondly at various stops along the way - his upscale background, his role in the Byrds, his ‘Will Scarlet in Robin Hood' haircut and unsexy cape ensemble, CS&N as the soundtrack to a West Coast American fantasy, the time the Beatles played him the unreleased A Day In The Life, a public fallout with Neil Young and a tuxedoed Graham Nash's last show with the Hollies with the piss-taking Crosby in the dressing-room. Plus “It's Not You It's Me” – classic records that leave us cold: fight-starting suggestions include albums by Patti Smith (“that bawling harridan with her jive muse”), Nirvana, Love, Neil Young, Cat Stevens, Arctic Monkeys and the Beatles. Weigh-in: My last weigh-in was 235. My current weight is 235Shocking Scientific News on Weight LossAccording to this article, you should avoid sugar, get sleep, avoid alcohol, exercise more, and stop smoking.WHAT REVOLUTIONARY ADVICEThis is what makes this show harder and harder to produce. I started this show in 2008 with the goal being that a weekly show would help me hold myself accountable. It did. Then id didn't. Then it didn't.While I've loved inspiring people to keep trying to lose weight, my audience has had more weight loss success than I have. It's Not You - It's MeConsequently, I'm starting to lose my passion for producing the show. I'm running out of things to talk about. This doesn't mean I don't appreciate you listening, but I'm just bring honest, that some of the thrills of doing the show are depleting.New Hosts on the HorizonI'm looking into some new people to co-host and eventually take over the show. It's very early, and admittedly for a guy who is saying "it's taking too much time" to produce the podcast, it doesn't make much sense to turn this into "logical idol." I mean, let's state the obvious. This isn't Jeopardy looking for a new host.I'll keep you in the loop as I move forward.

In this episode of By Any Means Necessary, hosts Sean Blackmon and Jacquie Luqman are joined by Wyatt Reed, By Any Means Necessary producer, to give us an on-the-ground update on the elections in Mexico and the “information warfare” being waged to undermine the Morena Party and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. In the second segment Jacquie and Sean are joined by Stepen Gowans Author of Washington's Long War on Syria; Patriots,Traitors and Empires; and Israel, A Beachhead in the Middle East, to discuss what's motivating the US government rehashing the Wuhan lab leak conspiracy, how the leak theory obscures how poorly the United States has handled the coronavirus pandemic and how Washington seems to only care about ‘authoritarianism'In the third segment, Sean and Jacquie are joined by Kamm Howard, National Male Co-Chair of the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America (N'COBRA) to discuss the current state of the demand for reparations in America in light of the renewed national focus on the 1921 Greenwood Massacre, whether Biden's recognition of the massacre and the proclamation he issued to recognize it reflects the Administration's stance and any expectation of progress proponents have on reparations, and the continued work of N'COBRA and legislators who have signed on to sponsor H.R. 40 to keep the issue as a focus of the Administration's policy agenda. In the last segment, Sean and Jacquie are joined by Monica Cruz, host of the ‘On the Picket Line' Podcast and co-host of ‘It's Not You It's Capitalism' with Breakthrough News, to discuss growing pro-Palestianian protests at major shipping ports to call attention to US support of Israel's crimes through importing its products, the pervasive role of propaganda in the way the Palestinian struggle is viewed in the US, the underreported ongoing coal miners's strike in Alabama, the importance of the growing labor movement emerging in the US South among historically oppressed workers, and the need to continue to focus on international solidarity in labor struggles.

Join my conversation with Sierra Blax. Born and raised on the island of Kaua'i, Sierra is an artist that brings a fresh taste of soul, chill-pop & R&B to her music. Being raised on the islands, you'll find from time to time, Sierra uses her landscape of palm trees and ocean breezes as inspiration for her lyrics and melodies that gives the ear this elated feeling. It is no surprise that she grew up honing her craft through weekly singing lessons with local voice teacher, Debbi Scarpell. It was then when she was introduced to Motown artists and soul music that helped shape her sound she has today. After high school, she attended the music program at the University of Hawaii and studied vocal performance. She described her experience in music school as difficult and uneasy. "I had to learn how to sing a completely different way than how I was taught - there were moments I really wanted to give up." Fortunately, for Blax she didn't. During these times, Sierra grew inspiration to write songs about the wild experiences she would encounter in her early 20's. "I wanted to write songs that were unapologetic, fun and audacious; we are so used to female singers sugar coating things, and I wanted to represent that female empowerment in my songwriting." Blax wants to show people that it's ok to make mistakes, embrace it and turn it into a comedy and art. Today she is still inspired by the classics that shaped her, but she is also embracing what the new age R&B sound is molding into today. "Although I am inspired by power-house singers like Jazmine Sullivan and Amy Winehouse, I am really loving how singers today are using the airy and subtle sides of their voices. This new style has definitely ignited a change for me and my sound. It forced me to use my soft/ falsetto voice more often and helped me discover new melodies that are digestible to the listener." You can find artists such as Snoh Alegra, Jungle, H.E.R., Nao, and Tame Impala on her Spotify playlist. Currently residing in Los Angeles, she is spending a lot of time in the studio writing and creating original music. Her newest single, "INYIM" (It's not you it's me) is a playful yet sassy tune that tells a story of all the dysfunctions that Blax portrays. If you're into astrology, it's basically based on the life of a scorpio and all its glory. The production is hands down a vibe with a funky bassline and grove. With the recent loss of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, I am honored to have two people on the show who are very much in alignment with her fight for gender equality. Andie Kramer and Al Harris are gender bias experts who have spent the past 30 years combating gender bias through writing, speaking and mentoring. We are talking today about the ways in which women experience bias in the workplace and how these biases hinder their advancement and compensation in their careers. You will hear what choices and changes need to occur for our country to make progress in gender equality and racial equality as well. Andie and Al are the co-authors of two award-winning books: Breaking Through Bias: Communication Techniques for Women to Succeed at Work and It’s Not You, It’s the Workplace: Women’s Conflict at Work and the Bias That Built It. Andie and Al’s writing on communication strategies and gender biases have been widely featured, including in HBR.org, The Huffington Post, The New York Times, and The Chicago Tribune. Andie is also a contributing writer for Forbes.com. Together and separately, Andie and Al speak and lead workshops across the country to help women, men, and organizations overcome the negative effects of gender bias and build healthier, more productive workplaces. “Implicit bias is still a problem and that's what we focus on in our work.” “We need a new approach. We need a new way of attacking gender bias. And that new approach involves not telling people NOT to be biased but it involves finding ways to interrupt biases from career affecting decisions.” In this episode, you will hear: - The difference between explicit and implicit bias and how to tell the difference - What women, men, and organizations can do to decrease gender bias - Andie and Al’s choice to write two books and fight for gender equality Coaching Information: If you would like more information on the Clear Choices business and life coaching program, please e-mail me at rob@robaigner.com or go to our website at https://clearchoices.live/. Episode 17: Show Notes. It's not a secret that stereotypes and biases exist, but how can workplaces create systems and processes where gendered characterizations are stripped away to create more equitable, merit-based environments? This question is one which Andie Kramer and Al Harris address in their new book, It’s Not You, It’s the Workplace. As gender-bias experts, attorneys, and speakers, Andie and Al have dedicated their research efforts to understand the influence that stereotypes have on the way women are treated. In this episode, we discuss what sparked their interest in gender-biased workplaces, and what they learned about the issues women had with one another in the workplace. This unexpected finding led them to question myths like the 'mean girl', where women leaders are frequently characterized as bitchy and unpleasant because they are not fulfilling misplaced expectations that stem from stereotypes. We also consider how the small number of leadership roles for women fuel competition by pitting women up against one another. Along with this, we explore the importance of methods and practices that work to remove the subjectivities that always hurt women in the workplace. Although these problems are systemic and require more than a one-time workshop, Andie and Al offer ways that women can support themselves and one another in the absence of organizational reform. To hear more about this important work, be sure to tune in today! Key Points From This Episode:What Andie learned in her time on her law firm’s compensation and management committee. The research that Andie and Al explored in their first book, Breaking Through Bias.Surprising findings of experiences that women have with other women in the workplace. The misplaced expectations that are placed on women leaders around being nice and kind. These stereotypes are deeply ingrained in us, and getting past them is hard. The ‘Goldilocks dilemma’ — Balancing between nice and being assertive.Debunking the 'mean girl' myth and how we can move past this. How the limited seats at the leadership table lead to competition among women. The difficulty that senior women face bringing junior women up with them.Exploring what Andie and Al refer to as ‘the three separate trains leaving the station.’Finding ways to prevent bias from influencing the trajectory of people’s careers. Some ways to remove biases from evaluation and hiring procedures. What women can do right now to cope with the gender-biased workplaces.Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode:Create Your Leading Edge ChallengeAndie & AlAndie & Al on TwitterAndie Kramer on LinkedInAl Harris on LinkedInITSPmagazineIt's Not You It's the WorkplaceBreaking Through BiasGoldman SachsKim O'Grady adds "mister" to his resume, gets a job

A leader looking to escape the old routine. A leader who never, ever gives up. Why is career advancement for women more difficult than it is for men? What can women do to fight the bias at workplaces? People put you into buckets based on who they perceive you to be. Women have had it all rough. Their ambitions and competence get questioned all the time. For instance, how can she deliver at work yet she has a baby to nurture? How can she be so ambitious? Our guests today are here to help us understand how we can fight bias at workplaces. According to our guests, it all begins with demonstrating confidence, even when you are not confident. Everyone is born curious. So, what happens? Why do some people become less curious than others? For individuals, leaders, and companies to be successful, they must determine the things that hold curiosity hostage. Think of the most innovative companies and you will notice they employ people who do not accept the status quo, they aren't reluctant to change, they evolve with the times, they look for problems to solve, and focus on asking questions. Drawing on decades research and incorporating interviews from some of the top leaders of our time, Hamilton examines the factors that impact curiosity including fear, assumptions, technology, and environment (FATE). Through her ground-breaking research, she has created the Curiosity Code Index (CCI) assessment to determine how these factors have impacted curiosity and to provide an action plan to transform individuals and organizations to help improve areas impacted by curiosity, including innovation, engagement, creativity, and productivity. “I have no special talents. Andie Kramer and Al Harris are married practicing lawyers. They have been mentoring women and speaking and writing about gender communication for more than 30 years. Andie and Al offer women unique, balanced, and highly practical advice they can use to prevent gender biases from slowing or derailing their careers. Andie and Al also present arresting information and compelling examples for male audiences to make them aware of and sensitive to the gender biases that hold women back—even in the most well-intentioned organizations. This power couple provides organizations—business and professional—with concrete, non- disruptive suggestions for workplace changes that will make women’s career opportunities more comparable to men’s. Authors of the popular book Breaking Through Bias: Communication Techniques for Women to Succeed at Work, this power couple brings a unique viewpoint to both women and men looking to navigate gender bias. Their new book coming out soon, It’s Not You, It’s The Workplace: Women’s Conflict At Work And The Bias That Built It, addresses the biases between women and how to break through the glass ceiling together. In today’s conversation, Andie and Al help us understand that the glass ceiling still exists even in the most well-intentioned environments and what we can do to keep moving forward while working together. We explore the differences between men and women in the way each approaches performance evaluations, business meetings, and mentorship. Andie and Al teach us about impression management, surprising studies among millennial men, why we haven’t seen real improvement in women’s advancement since the mid-90s, and what we can do about it to shatter the glass ceiling once and for all. Key Takeaways We haven’t seen real improvement in women’s advancement since the mid-90s. Gender stereotypes and the biases that flow from them haven’t changed since the 70s. Very often the differences between men and women in the workplace get exaggerated. Researchers have found that in the workplace there are far more differences between women and between men verses women as a group and men as a group. Powerful people get allocated space. It’s much harder for people to ignore you when you’re standing verses sitting in a seat. People’s impressions of us are far more related to our non-verbal behavior and the way we present ourselves than they are to the content of what we say. Women tend to be more interested in getting their words right than getting their persona and posture right. Women hold the same stereotypes about women as men have about them. Organizations that are diverse do better – they make more money, they’re more profitable, and they come up with more creative solutions. Welcome to Heels of Justice; these are the stories of women lawyers who are trailblazers in their field and paved the way for the rest of us. Today, the Heels of Justice interview Andrea (Andie) S. Kramer, author and Partner in the international law firm of McDermott Will & Emery LLP, which was just listed as one of the “10 Best Big Law Firms for Female Attorneys.” Andie is head of the firm’s Financial Products, Trading, and Derivatives Group, and is the founding chair of the firm’s Gender Diversity Committee and currently serves as its co-chair. She has served on both her firm’s Management Committee and Compensation Committee. In these roles, she became deeply concerned about the disparities in the pace and extent of women’s and men’s career achievements. Key Takeaways [:29] Katherine welcomes Andie Kramer, lawyer and author to the Heels of Justice podcast. [1:12] How did Andie end up writing her first book on gender dynamics in law firms? [3:19] What was the response Andie got to the Self-evaluation do’s and Don’ts a piece she wrote about 12 years ago? [4:29] Were there any changes in self-evaluations by women after the training was initially offered at her firm? [6:23] Once women start talking about themselves as rockstars, is there anything else that needs to be done to ensure that message is received positively? [8:35] What is the Goldilocks dilemma? [9:20] Katherine asks for some very pragmatic advice on how to navigate a boardroom interruption (we also learn there was a necessity to create a tip sheet for this specific issue!). [11:45] Doesn’t this whole “tips and advice for women” just generate more work for women just to stand shoulder to shoulder with their peers? [14:08] Katherine asks Andie to describe benevolent sexism, as it was an issue she always knew about but never managed to express clearly. [16:50] How are women to respond to benevolent sexism? [18:07] Andie shares an outrageous anecdote from her book. [20:34] What led Andie to become a lawyer? [24:11] Katherine asks Andie to share a moment when she advocated for herself. [27:33] How about a time when Andie experienced failure? And what about the recovery from such a failure? [32:30] Katherine asks if Andie has advice for women just out of law schools, in terms of picking a firm. Alternatively, what can law firms do to ensure a higher rate of senior women within their ranks? [33:55] What about advice Andie would have for her younger self? [35:05] Katherine asks Andie what the biggest risk she took was. [36:30] And finally, what motivates Andie to write when she could be spending this time just being the awesome lawyer that she is? [37:15] Katherine thanks Andie for participating on the Heels of Justice podcast, and she signs off until next time. The very first piece that I wrote was about self-evaluation do’s and don’ts as to what women need to do in order to advocate for themselves.” “I was probably 13 years old and my social studies class went to the criminal court building and we saw the defense putting on a murder trial and seeing a piece of a murder trial from the defense side obviously makes you think the person is innocent. So I was going to find a way to save the world. I told my parents I was going to be a lawyer, and they knew a lawyer, so they asked him if he would take me to lunch and give me career advice — this is before women were really admitted to law school in any numbers (the ’60s) — so this man takes me to lunch and proceeds to spend the entire time telling me that I did not want to be a lawyer because nobody likes lady lawyers. ‘Lady lawyers are lonely, they don’t have any friends; I would never have a family, I would never get married; no one would ever love me!’ and that was his lunch. … When he assured me that it was a terrible thing, I concluded that I was going to do it, and I could manage those things.” More about Andrea S.
