In an era where craft beer innovation reigns supreme, there is a potent nostalgia for flavors of the past. The Senate Maerzen beer, a gem originally brewed by Christian Heurich in 1933, has recently been revived, bringing a slice of Washington D.C.'s rich brewing history back into the spotlight. This renaissance of flavor is not merely a passion project; it's a meticulous blending of historical research and modern brewing techniques, fueled by a team deeply dedicated to bridging the gap between past and present.Kimberly Totten, an instrumental figure in bringing Senate Maerzen back to life, utilized the extensive Maerzen collections and the detailed notes of Paul Kaiser to recreate the legendary brew. The journey began when Kim Bender from the Heurich House reached out to Peter Jones, proposing the resurrection of the Senate Maerzen as a way to reinvigorate and celebrate local brewing heritage. The Heurich House, steeped in history and dedicated to preserving the legacy of Christian Heurich's brewing empire, viewed this project as a public history endeavor. Chris Broome, another key player in this historic revival, emphasized the distinctiveness of the Senate Maerzen compared to modern Maerzen beers. "The 1933 recipe calls for ingredients that aren't typically used today, particularly the hops and malt," he noted. "We aimed for a 6% ABV beer that could still invoke the traditional flavor profile while appealing to contemporary palates. We're thrilled with the result—it is both a nod to history and an enjoyable beer for today's audience."The beer embodies a rich historical narrative and represents a significant cultural bridge within the community. The Heurich House's programs, such as the Heurich Urban Manufacturing Incubator and various public history initiatives, foster connections between local history and today's D.C. populace. Meanwhile, the excitement surrounding the upcoming Snallygaster festival is palpable, as it will serve as a major showcase for the newly-brewed Senate Maerzen. Brewers and craft beer enthusiasts from all over the region are eager to take in, not just the flavors, but the story encapsulated within each glass. As they clink glasses in anticipation of Oktoberfest and other forthcoming events, the team behind Senate Maerzen revels in their accomplishment. They've not only brewed an impressive beer but have also sewn a bond between D.C.'s brewing past and present—a testament to the timeless allure of a well-crafted pint. So, next time you lift a glass of Senate Maerzen, remember that you're not just tasting beer. You're savoring history, one satisfying sip at a time. Holy beer and barbecue, Batman! Nigel and Nick are still a little shook up from the amazing week of beer, barbecue and beer family in Kansas City. Partnering with Annie and the gang at Vine Street Brewing, the show brought in the filmmakers and much of the cast from the One Pint at a Time documentary for a Kansas City screening and craft beer party like our midwest metro hasn't seen in a while. Welcome to a brand-new episode of Barley & Me Presents: Leonard Malting, host Ben Rice's beer-centric movie podcast with co-hosts Paulina Olivares & Corky McDonnell. On this episode, we discuss the new beer documentary One Pint at a Time, with director Aaron Hose and producer Brigitte Hose.Unfortunately, Corky could not attend the recording due to a family event and Ben had to miss the documentary screening for similar reasons, so Paulina handles this one almost entirely on her own. And does an EXCELLENT job.One Pint at a Time is a beer documentary focusing on Black beer history, from the invention of beer, early brewing, up to the modern day, where many still see it as odd if a Black person likes, let alone makes, beer. Through discussions with Black brewers and brewery owners, and trips to breweries throughout the world, regardless of ownership, the Hoses try to provide proof to everyone that if you have a dream or a passion, it is worth pursuing."We" also discuss energy vampires, correcting ignorance, the documentary festival circuit, the founding of the NB2A (National Black Brewers Association), 25+ years of documentary filmmaking, the first-ever Black beer festival FreshFest, and so much more.If you have a beer-centric or heavily-beer-involved movie recommendation, let us know and maybe we'll do this again! Every ice cream flavor at Ben & Jerry's has an origin story. And it's often years in the making. Earlier this year, I had the honor of moderating “The Art of Storytelling: Highlighting Important Stories” at Crafted for Action, a four-day, hybrid conference for craft beer lovers. One of the members of the panel was Aaron Hosé, an Aruban-born filmmaker who has been working in the biz for over 20 years. Though the panel was virtual, I had a chance to meet some of the speakers in person at the opening event here in Atlanta. That's where I met Aaron Hosé. He was actually the first person I ran into at Atlantucky Brewing, where the opening was happening. We quickly fell into a conversation about the film that he was premiering at the conference. It was easy to see how passionate he was about the story he was telling about Black people in the beer industry and the difficulties they experienced opening their own breweries. It took me mere minutes to ask him to join me on this podcast, even before I viewed the film. Once I saw the film, I was captivated by the stories and mildly amused at seeing some of my friends and acquaintances in the film. The Black beer community seems small when you know almost everyone on the screen. In our conversation, we talk about the film and the inspiration behind creating it. We discuss the importance of going with the flow, and how people of color should tell their own stories--the topic of our panel at Crafted for Action. Aaron also shares how he gained the trust of his interviewees and what he wishes he could change about the film.
After a computer whoops and a missed week, Adam and Steve call in the reinforcements from Adam and Matt of the Decayin With The Boys podcast. In the news: One Pint at a Time gets a 3 Rivers Film Fest date, Union Brothers expands, West Virginia actually has craft beer, and Bash Brew has some exciting announcements. Then Hop Nation Adam plies the rest of the group for beer and horror film pairings. What do you drink on the Train to Busan? What goes best with a Warlock? Why does Mint Chocolate Chip rule so hard? Finally, it's the return of the infamous Horror Movie & Beer Quiz. One Adam hates it. The other one not so much. Find who is who. A labor of love. That's the only way to describe the just released beer documentary One Pint at a Time. When Aaron & Brigitte Hosé started filming at the inaugural Fresh Fest Beer Fest in 2018, they had the film they wanted to produce in mind. Add 4 years, a global pandemic and the evolving storylines about people of color in beer, One Pint at a Time took on a life of its own. We're happy to have Aaron & Brigitte as the guests of our 50th episode. Yes! Act 50. Without giving spoilers, the director and producer tell us why they made the film, how they chose the brewers in the film and why their stories needed to be told. Aaron Hosé, an award-winning documentary filmmaker and co-founder (his wife is his other half) of 2Hands20Fingers, joins the Drinking Partners for their latest release. Listeners might recognize his work as he has followed and filmed Ed and Day over the course of the last several years. In the coming weeks, his documentary, “One Pint at a Time,” will be released. The film features the rise of Fresh Fest, the transition to Fresh Fest Digi Fest, and now Barrel & Flow Fest. One Pint at a Time is best described as, “four years in the making, this eye-opening film details the highs and lows of the Black experience in American craft beer as told through the eyes of Black brewers, brand owners and influencers across the country.” Aaron explains how the film came to be, how he switched careers from computer engineering to filmmaking, and how the stories expanded and adapted during the course of filming. Asked why he made the film, Aaron answers, “No one looked like us,” when his wife and he visited breweries. A spectacular podcast with equal parts education and entertainment. Visit https://onepintfilm.com for information on release dates, view a trailer, and learn more about the African roots of beer and brewing.

Jim, Mack and Darrin are back this week. Darrin is a little lighter after donating blood, but diving in water is better. They cover scuba in the news and finish things off with the traditional back scuba joke. It is traditional that it is a bad scuba joke, not a traditional joke or something close to that. **This version fixes the gaps in audio**
