Historian Victoria Bynum turns now to her own history in this multigenerational American saga spanning from 1840 to 1979. Through meticulous historical research, personal letters, diaries, and the unpublished memoir of Mary Daniel Huckenpoehler, the author's maternal grandmother, Bynum examines five generations within the broader context of the nation's history, navigating pivotal events such as First Wave immigration, the Civil War, the Gilded Age, the Great Depression, two world wars, the Cold War, and beyond. Child of a mother from Waconia, Minnesota, and father from Jones County, Mississippi, Bynum blends a historian's voice with personal experiences, intertwining her grandmother's unpublished memoir and letters with her own role as a diarist and historian. She explores class, race, ethnicity, and gender dynamics. From the rise of Welsh immigrant ancestors in the Upper Midwest and the Gilded Age privileges of her grandmother's upbringing to Bynum's own tumultuous childhood in the 1950s and early 1960s as she is shuttled between Georgia, Mississippi, Minnesota, Florida, and California, Bynum grapples with numerous dangers of being raised in a volatile environment marked by alcohol-fueled violence, sexual degradation, and neglect. Against the backdrop of racial segregation, civil rights movements, and the Cold War, Deep Roots, Broken Branches: A History and Memoir (UP of Mississippi, 2025) traces the author's coming-of-age journey, and the profound influence of her grandmother. Revealed through the lens and tensions of an Air Force family, Deep Roots, Broken Branches explores Bynum's intellectual curiosity, voracious reading habits, and turbulent path through early motherhood, divorce, and higher education in California. Throughout, her grandmother remains a stabilizing force, offering inspiration and guidance. This book paints a vivid portrait of a southern identity's growth amid personal challenges and broader societal shifts. Learn more about your ad choices. Season 5, Episode 230 Local Alaska Pilots and the National Guard Saved a Family from a Frozen Lake The Heart-Stopping Rescue of a Pilot and His Daughters on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula According to the Associated Press and OutdoorLife.com, a dramatic rescue unfolded on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula this week after a pilot and his two daughters were stranded for hours on the wing of their half-sunken plane in a frozen lake. The family's plane, a Piper PA-12 Super Cruiser, crashed Sunday evening during a sightseeing trip. As night fell, the pilot and his daughters, who have not been identified, were forced to cling to the wing of the plane, waiting in the freezing cold for help. It wasn't long before the tight-knit community of Alaska's bush pilots sprang into action. When the plane was first reported missing, local pilots immediately rallied to join the search. By Monday morning, a group of volunteers, including pilot Terry Godes, took to the skies in their own planes, hoping to spot the wreckage. Godes, who had seen a Facebook post about the missing family, was the first to spot the plane, with the family waving from the wing, signaling they were still alive. After Godes radioed in the location, the Alaska State Troopers and National Guard were quickly alerted. The National Guard sent in a C-130 transport plane and a helicopter for the rescue operation, but conditions were challenging. The ice was too soft to land on, and the rotor wash threatened to blow the children off the wing. Despite these difficulties, the National Guard performed a flawless, one-of-a-kind recovery, saving the family from the icy wilderness. The pilot and his daughters were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The rescue, which involved the quick thinking and coordination of local pilots, the Alaska State Troopers, and the National Guard, was a testament to the strength of Alaska's community and the courage of those who risked their lives to bring a family home safely. From ice fishing events to cleanups, the club is passionate about connecting kids to nature. One of their most exciting projects this spring is revitalizing a 13-acre forest at Bayview Elementary School, where students will work with forestry experts to restore the space, plant trees, and create better walking trails. The Conservation Club started small with just a handful of students but has grown into a vibrant 180-member group. Full-fledged members earn a school letter at Waconia High. These students take part in activities like hunting, camping, and fossil hunting, all while giving back through cleanups at local lakes and parks. Waconia's strong community support, from donations to volunteers, helps make the club's work possible. If your school wants to make a difference, consider starting an outdoor club! It's a great way to connect students with nature, foster teamwork, and give back to the community. Waconia High School's Conservation Club shows that, with passion and support, great things can grow. Jesus speaks tenderly to His disciples as the shadow of the cross looms ever closer. He reveals the glory of the Father and the Son in His impending sacrifice and offers a new commandment to love one another as He has loved them. Amidst their confusion and fear, He promises the presence of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, who will guide and sustain them. As Jesus prepares them for His departure, His words radiate with hope, peace, and the assurance that He is the way, the truth, and the life.  The Rev. Bryan Stecker, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia, MN, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study John 13.  The Gospel of John takes us on a journey through the Good News of Jesus in a unique way. It reveals Jesus as the incarnate son of God from eternity.  From His miraculous signs to His profound "I Am" statements, we witness Jesus offering living water to the thirsty, light to those in darkness, and life to the dead. But this is also a story of conflict: Jesus is relentlessly pursued by those who reject Him, yet He willingly goes to the cross, showing the depths of God's love. As we travel from His first miracle to His ultimate victory over death, John invites us to see and believe—that in Jesus, we find eternal life and the very presence of God among us. Connect to God's revealing Word in this series that uncovers the rich, layered truths of John's Gospel and the unshakable hope it offers.  Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. Jesus reveals the profound unity between Himself and God the Father. He explains that He does nothing on His own but only what He sees the Father doing, reflecting a perfect harmony in their divine work. Jesus asserts that the Father has entrusted Him with the authority to give life and to judge all humanity, highlighting that honoring the Son is inseparable from honoring the Father. He prophesies a future resurrection where the faithful will rise to eternal life, while those who have done evil will face judgment. To affirm His divine mission, Jesus points to multiple witnesses: the testimony of John the Baptist, the miraculous works He performs, the sacred Scriptures, and the direct testimony of God Himself. Through these, He urges the people to believe in Him, for in Him lies the promise of eternal life. The Rev. Bryan Stecker, pastor at Trinity Lutheran in Waconia, MN, joins guest host Rev. David Boisclair to study John 5:19-47. The Gospel of John takes us on a journey through the Good News of Jesus in a unique way. Retired science teacher Ellen Fahey says art galleries are her refuge, and she's gone three times to see Peyton Scott Russell's retrospective exhibition at the White Bear Center for the Arts. The show features 40 years of Russell's work, from elementary school through today. A graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Russell is perhaps best known for his murals, including one painted in 2020 of George Floyd, entitled “Icon of a Revolution.” The exhibit features that work as well as examples of Peyton's Graffiti art, stenciling, jean jackets and sculpture. The exhibit runs through March 3, with an open house March 2 at 6:30 p.m. Jendayi ‘Jedi Maji' Berry of Minneapolis loved creating abstracts to live music back in September as part of MacPhail's Spotlight Series: Musical Explorations in Spectral Colors. He strongly recommends seeing the next installment of the series, “Translucent Beauty” Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Antonello Hall in Minneapolis. This performance will feature visual art and short films of Eyenga Bokamba, created and projected in response to live music that includes Bach's Suite for solo cello No. 5 and “electronic soundscapes". Berry says it's exciting to experience the two art forms combined and speaking to one another in a live setting. Your Classical MPR is a media sponsor for this series. Writer Dave Walbridge from St. Paul suggests keeping your eyes open for a Free Little Art Gallery. Like the Little Free Libraries, anyone can set up a box to house a miniature art gallery. People may simply take in the art, or take a piece they enjoy. And as with Little Free Libraries, artists may leave work in the galleries. The movement began in Seattle and has spread across the world, inside art galleries and community centers as well as outside. In Minnesota, Free Little Art Galleries have popped up in and around St. Paul as well as Duluth, Willmar, Waconia and Hawley, a town east of Fargo. Writer Tyler Tork of Plymouth, Minn. has come up with an online map of Free Little Art Galleries.

Heather Lawrenz of Red Wing Arts was deeply inspired by Journey to Rock Bottom, a visual arts show that celebrates athleticism. Burnsville artist Annie Young began creating this show after running an ice marathon in Antarctica in 2018. She interviewed her fellow runners about their Antarctica journeys, then created paintings inspired by their stories and her imagination. An artist living with blindness, Young also collaborated with 10 local artists with a variety of backgrounds and abilities. A free artist reception Saturday will bring together many of the artists as well as the “athletes coming in from all over the world who inspired these pieces,” Lawrenz said. Some of the runners plan to compete in the Twin Cities marathon on Sunday. The reception is from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The show runs through Nov. 5 at the Ames Center Art Gallery in Burnsville. There is an audio description of the exhibit scheduled for Oct. 15, 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., including a discussion led by the artist. Singer/songwriter Clark Machtemes of Waconia is preparing for a trip west this weekend to meander through towns along the Upper Minnesota Valley, checking out arts studios. The annual Meander Art Crawl is a juried event with more than 30 stops at studios in Ortonville, Appleton, Madison, Milan, Dawson, Montevideo and Granite Falls. This free, self-guided tour includes potters, printers, basket weavers, painters, and more. Machtemes says he discovers something new every year. The Meander runs Friday through Sunday. Find a map and description of all the stops here. Farther north, the 19th annual Fargo Moorhead Visual Arts (FMVA) Studio Crawl invites visitors to check out the work of 40 artists and organizations Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Find a map here. If you take the studio crawl, Naomi RaMona Schliesman of Fergus Falls recommends a stop in Moorhead to see the collaborative “Mother Trees” exhibit from Ms. Anna Lee's Gray Matter Series. Courtesy image A mural and a dinner table setting are part of a multi-sensorial exhibit called "Mother Trees." The title refers to trees in the forest that connect with and nourish others through the mycorrhizal relationship between fungus and plant. The multi-step collaboration behind this exhibit moved from art to dinner party to more artwork. Chris Larson's mural was the backdrop for a fungi-themed dinner party created by chef Candace Stock. Local creatives gathered at the dinner possessed skills ranging from photography to poetry to hairstyling. Photographer Sarah Faith Strong, artist Nancy X. Valentine, and poet Julie Larson created works resulting from that evening. The works are on display at the Arthouse Gallery, a new space in Moorhead.

For those that are new tolistening to the Pigskin Tales Podcast, thanks for choosing to listen. Iappreciate the fact that you took the time out of your busy day to find outwhat this podcast is all about. Before really get into it, Iwant to take some time to tell you a little bit about myself. My name is Ross and I grew up in a smallfarming community 25 miles south of Fargo, North Dakota. Colfax, is one of theclosest high schools that I attended. Technically it's in the Richland schooldistrict and its comprised of Colfax, Abercrombie, Christine, Galchutt, andBarney. I am part of a family of 3 boysand no sisters. But now that my 2 brothers and I have been married for a while,I can say that I have 2 sisters and a wife. My wife and I don't have anykids of our own, but we've fostered kids within Grand Forks County and sincethat didn't work out to adopt, we have now been looking into adopting from theVillage. The Village is a small company that helps people in many differentways; like financial counseling, adopting children and just counseling ingeneral. Anyway, my older brother lives with his wife and 2 boys in Minneapolisand my younger brother lives in Waconia with his wife and 5 boys.My younger brother just turned40 on the 8th and so, now we're all officially in the 40 and olderclub. I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing. Maybe we'll just saythat we're all a little older and wiser. Ok, so now that I have that youknow a little bit about me and my family, I want to tell you about thispodcast. First, the easiest and simplest way of explaining what it is, is acollection of stories I have found on ex-NFL players that came from Minnesota. That's what it has evolved into. At first, I just started out analyzingMinnesota Vikings players, news, and games that I watched. Then I decided toresearch the history of the Vikings and try to put it into a biography ofsorts. I was attempting to do my own version of ESPN's 30for30, but that didn'twork out. So really I just wrote the players biography from the internet. Iknow I am not supposed to use Wikipedia, but I used it for some of the researchlinks. And at the end of an episode, I used to say all the links I used. Butthen I decided to shorten things up.Now, what I have been doing issort of the same thing as before, writing a biography about a player, but now Ido it in a short series if I can. Some series have gotten really long; likeErnie Nevers, but I been trying to limit myself to only 4 parts so that itdoesn't get too long. If you have listened to thispodcast in the past and have enjoyed it, please review my work. I have an emailaddress you can send a message to or you can find my profile on Twitter,Instagram, and Facebook. I have attempted to create a You-tube account, buthave not used that as of late, because my computer doesn't seem to want to savemy video work. So I'm working on saving money to buy a new computer. If youwant to send me an email my address is pigskintalespodcast@gmail.com.I also have a patreon accountin which you can support me monetarily. There are membership levels so low thatit only costs you a dollar to support me if you so choose. I am also part ofthe sports history network ran by Arnie Chapman who doubles as host of thepodcast the Football History Dude. His stuff is good too. Take a listen! Hejust made his 200th episode! So there ya have it. A littlebit about the Pigskin Tales Podcast. I hope you enjoyed listening to this and Ihope that you decide to listen to more episodes moving forward.

John knows how to connect with kids and get them to play their hearts out. He has also been a professional resource for me, especially during my first few years of teaching. John is a master of his craft and as you will hear, extremely humble and down to earth.  Before we get started, I need to mention that today's episode is brought to you by Eargasm Ear Plugs. Accents and marcatos should be musically-energizing not dreadfully painful. If you find yourself needing a break from loud noises, give yourself the permission to wear hearing protection. The trick is to get hearing protection that still allows you to hear the important sounds while reducing those that are invasive and taxing. Enter cost-effective Eargasm earplugs. Their discreet design allows them to be worn without drawing attention to your ears. Each set comes with two different sizes for large and small ear canals. They are easy to remove from your ears and come with an aluminum carrying case that can be clipped to your keychains making them easy to carry with to pep band events or concerts. These earplugs make all frequencies softer - so they do not hinder your ability to interact with what you are hearing from your band, but they do help ensure that you will be able to continue hearing long after rehearsal is over.
