Got a story idea for Bloodworks 101? Send us a text message When the Tualatin City Council met recently during National Blood Donor Month, an official proclamation was read, honoring Bloodworks Northwest. On these occasions, there's usually a lot of pomp and bluster. Official proclamations can often go on and on. But little did those attending the meeting know, this official proclamation hit Councilor Maria Reyes hard. As she tells Bloodworks 101 producer John Yeager, that's because this proclamation took Maria back to the worst day of her life but also to the ninety people who were there for her when that life hung in the balance.

If you want to know about blood, spend some time with the man who literally wrote the book on blood - Professor Douglas Starr. Our conversation today with Stacy McFarland, Executive Director for the Greater Shenandoah Valley chapter of the American Red Cross included a discussion about the nationwide blood shortage and the importance of blood donation. Stacy emphasized the need for O-positive and O-negative blood donors, as these types can be used in emergency situations and are always in demand. She also cited a loss of over 40% of the Red Cross's donor base over the past 20 years as a contributing factor to the shortage. Despite the situation not being critical yet, Stacy highlighted the importance of replenishing the blood supply, particularly in the coming weeks. Stacy emphasized that blood shortages can have a significant impact on various situations such as emergency rooms, elective surgeries, and cancer treatments. She pointed out the need for diverse blood donors, particularly for sickle cell patients who require a close match in blood antigens for transfusions. Stacy also shared information about a new feature in Virginia where residents can include their blood type on their driver's license. We discussed the blood donation process and Stacy emphasized the benefits of blood donation for both the donor and the recipient, including health checks and potential improvements to health. She mentioned that the Red Cross blood donor app can be used to schedule donations, complete a series of questions, and receive a QR code to speed up the check-in process. She outlined the steps involved in donating blood, the health history check, blood pressure check, and the donation process itself. Donors are encouraged to stay for 10-15 minutes after donating to recover and enjoy cookies and juice. Stacy clarified that people taking blood pressure medication can donate blood as long as their blood pressure is at a healthy level and they meet the age requirements (ages 16-18 require a parent in attendance.) She emphasized the importance of maintaining a healthy diet and adequate hydration before and after donating. Stacy explained that most blood donations stay within the local community for logistical reasons. She also mentioned that donors are notified when their blood is used and that it does not stay on the shelves for long. Stacy told us that January is historically the lowest month for blood donation. This year, the shortage was exacerbated by the nationwide weather and the holidays. Before we wrapped up, Stacy shared details about Red Cross and the National Football League (NFL) partnering this January, during National Blood Donor Month, to urge individuals to give blood or platelets and help tackle the emergency blood shortage. Those who come to give blood, platelets or plasma in January will automatically be entered for a chance to win a trip for two to Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. Winter pressures and COVID-19 have catalyzed a blood supply crisis around the world. As part of National Blood Donor Month in the United States, Dr. Hilary Guite investigates blood transfusions with Maria Cohut, Medical News Today's feature editor, and Dr. Baia Lasky, medical director of the American Red Cross. Hilary and Maria also speak with Shaun, a blood donor, about the process of giving blood, and hear from blood transfusion recipient-turned-donor, Brian.
Welcome to January 27th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the gift of life and having your cake and eating it too. Every 2 seconds someone in the United States needs a blood transfusion. That means over 41,000 donations are required each day to meet that need. You may already be aware that there are 4 blood types: O, A, B, and AB, but actually there are 8 if you consider that each has a positive and negative rH factor. O type blood can be used for anyone who needs it. AB blood types can receive blood of any type, but they are extremely rare. What does that mean for you? Plenty, if you're in need of a transfusion. But even if you're not up on your A, B and Os you can still give the gift of life during National Blood Donor Month. Chocolate lovers like to go over the top and chocolate cake is no exception. There is a chocolate cake recipe from a chef in Dubai that calls for cocoa beans from Italy, organic flour from the UK, vanilla from Uganda and 23 carat gold leaf and dust. The Golden Phoenix, as it's known, is served on a Marie Antoinette dessert trolley, and comes at a price tag of over one thousand dollars. Luckily the kind that Duncan Hines makes is more accessible and some would argue, equally delicious. Ever since a doctor and a chocolate maker teamed up to grind cocoa beans on a stone mill, the once exclusive ingredient can now be found everywhere. On National Chocolate Cake Day you don't have to be royalty to have your cake and eat it too. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day! Blood donations typically drop off around the holidays, making National Blood Donor Month in January and important time to share the message about saving lives by giving blood. The COVID-19 pandemic also has affected blood donations."The COVID-19 pandemic has really had an adverse effect on us recruiting and collecting blood donors in general," says Dr. Justin Juskewitch, associate medical director of Mayo Clinic Blood Donor Services. Millions of people need blood transfusions each year. Some may need blood during surgery. Others depend on it after an accident or because they have a disease that requires blood components. Blood donation makes this possible. "The inventory of today was the donations of yesterday," explains Dr. Juskewitch. "So paying it forward is also a really great way of helping take care of others. And then those others will be there for you when you meet your time of need. It's a great way to start the new year."On the Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Dr. Juskewitch discusses how to become a blood donor.

Craig Butler has been leading the fight against thalassemia for over half a century. He also oversees programs to encourage all members of the public to donate blood, as treatment for thalassemia involves frequent lifelong transfusions. Mr. Butler is proud to be the author of “The Cooley's Anemia Foundation Storybook,” a publication for children with thalassemia. Radhika holds a master's degree in genetic counseling and worked as the National Director of Patient Services for the Cooley's Anemia Foundation prior to joining the faculty of the Joan H. Robin Renée, Mary McGinley, and Wendy Sheridan are back from their short winter break and wish everyone a very happy 2019! This week, Robin spoke with Christiana Gaudet, one of the most recognizable talents in tarot and the intuitive arts today. She is the author of Fortune Stellar: What Every Professional Tarot Reader Needs to Know and Tarot Tour Guide: Tarot, The Four Elements, and Your Spiritual Journey. Christiana says, "... we are at our best when we think magically, but at our worst when we fall into magical thinking." Listen in to the conversation to learn the differences between the two concepts and to consider if and how spiritual practices like Pagan ritual magick, prayer, and meditation affect our inner and external experiences. Please forgive the fact that Robin sounds like she is speaking from inside an aluminum can. Much better sound quality for The Leftscape is in the works! Later in the show, Mary, Wendy, and Robin discuss the very helpful Media Bias Chart 4.0. This chart is a handy way to cut through the various accusations of "fake news" and to be more informed about the slant, as well as the reliability, of the news you listen to. And in the news, the partial government shutdown continues and the New York Times runs a Bruce Ackerman opinion piece on why declaring an emergency to build "the wall" would not be a legal move. Current celebrations include National Religious Freedom Day, National Nothing Day, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Squirrel Appreciation Day, commemoration of the first assembly of the League of Nations in 1920, and National Blood Donor Month - the discussion of which prompts Wendy to declare, "The devil doesn't need a lawyer!" Birthday shout outs go to Lin-Manuel Miranda, Michelle Obama, Jim Carrey, Buzz Aldrin, Tom Baker, and Jam Master Jay. President of the United States Barack Obama was sworn into office for his second term as President and Commander in Chief on Monday, Jan. 21. The Joint Chiefs of Staff have a new member: the Chief of the National Guard Bureau. Air Force General Craig Mckinley became a member of the Joint Chiefs when President Barack Obama signed the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act December thirty-first. The act included other provisions specific to the National Guard including changing the Vice Chief of the National Guard Bureau to a three-star position and rescinding the position of Director of the Bureau's Joint Staff. The act provides $670 billion in spending for Defense Department programs as well as nuclear weapons programs handled by the Department of Energy. Following threats by the Iranian government, the Department of Defense has reaffirmed its position, having naval vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz, near Iran. January is National Blood Donor Month, and the Armed Services Blood Program (ASBP) needs your help. On Thursday, the Defense Department released a strategy plan that will allow for more than $450 billion in budget cuts over the next ten years while maintaining America's military superiority.
