Today on The DC Beer Show, Jake and Brandy keep the good brews flowing. First off, Brandy's fresh from a trip to Ardent Craft in Richmond, singing praises of their alt beer. Jacob joins in the cheer, holding a pint of Wheatland Spring's Common Grain—a tipple toasting women in the brewery world, like the incredible Bonnie. This week, we're catching up on the pulse of the March beer scene, full of exciting events like the Women's Panels at Lost Generation and Other Half, celebrating women with a blend of pizza, craft suds, and… shenanigans, obviously! March being Women's Month, Jake himself pledges attendance and support.Next up in the fermenting fun, the team shines a light on the brewing buzzkill: City State Brewery's brewing operations ceasing, a sobering reminder to support local brews over Amazon shopping sprees. But the hops don't stop there—we've got Brandy and Jacob chatting with Annie McGinnis from Vine Street Brewing in Kansas City. She gives us the lowdown on their claim to fame as the first black-owned brewery in Missouri, housed in a historic building just East of memorable KC landmarks. Vine Street is stirring the pot (or kettle, in this case) with a community vibe brought alive with music, art, and eclectic beer styles like their signature Hood Saison. Our hosts also dive into Annie's time advocating at the Missouri Capitol, aligning with Anheuser Busch for a good cause—tax reform to keep craft brewing costs palatable. Plus, with collaborations in spades and innovative initiatives on the horizon, Vine Street Brewing is definitely one to watch. As always, there's a sprinkle of shout-outs to beer shares and brewery events in the DC area, making sure you folks get your craft fix all while supporting local breweries. So, crack open a cold one, settle in, and join us for a pint-sized adventure on The DC Beer Show! It is a privilege to welcome Khemuni “Muni” Norodom to The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast.  Muni spent his childhood in his home country of Cambodia. Upon graduating from the International School of Phnom Penh, he traveled to Malaysia and Germany to study in their capital cities.  It did not take long before he caught the acting bug.  Following his uncle, King Sihamoni, who worked as a Cambodian cultural ambassador and a classical dance teacher in his younger days, Muni decided to pursue a career in the arts field and moved to the United States. In 2017, Muni graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. 1660 Vine will be Muni's first feature role.  1660 Vine is an original musical that investigates the journey of life as a social media influencer creating, curating, and continuing an artificial online identity that pleases sponsors, brands, and tens of millions of followers, all the while aware of the widening space between one's true self and one's online self.  The film is an ensemble story of makeup tutorialists, stunt artists, models, pranksters, gamers, vloggers, and musicians who, though each on their path, have found community in the luxury Hollywood apartment building they (temporarily) call home – 1660 Vine Street.  1660 Vine is directed by Patricia McGregor, the New York Theater Workshop Artistic Director. The legendary Paula Abdul choreographs it and features music supervision from the team that oversaw the High School Musical franchise. Muni is joined in the cast by Cheryl Porter, Chris Olsen, Pia Toscano, CJ Curz, Malachi Durant, Lisa Loeb, and Sam Haft.  On this edition of The Jake's Take with Jacob Elyachar Podcast, Muni Norodom discussed what attracted him to the role of Danny, working with his cast, and sharing advice for content creators about being authentic on social media.  Let's connect on social media! DOMINIC NOLAN chats to Paul about WHITE CITY, character, tone, London and villains. WHITE CITY: It's 1952, and London is victorious but broken, a city of war ruins and rationing, run by gangsters and black-market spivs. An elaborate midnight heist, the biggest robbery in British history, sends newspapers into a frenzy. Politicians are furious, the police red-faced. They have suspicions but no leads. Hunches but no proof. For two families, it is more than just a sensational headline, as their fathers fail to return home on the day of the robbery.Young Addie Rowe, daughter of a missing Jamaican postman and drunk ex-club hostess mother, struggles to care for her little sister in a dilapidated Brixton rooming house.Claire Martin, increasingly resentful of roads not taken, strives to make the rent and keep her teenage son Ray from falling under unsavoury influences in Notting Dale. She finds herself caught between the interests of dangerous men who may know the truth behind her husband's disappearance: Dave Lander, whose reserved nature she finds difficult to reconcile with his reputation as a violent gang enforcer, and Teddy 'Mother' Nunn, a sociopathic, evangelising outlaw and top lieutenant in Billy Hill's underworld.Drawn together through the years in the city's invisible web of crime and poverty, the fates of the broken families and violent men collide in 1958, as the West Indian community of Notting Hill's slums come under attack from thugs and Teddy Boys. For Addie, Claire, Dave and Mother, old scores will be settled and new dreams chased in the crucible of London's violent summer.Dominic Nolan lives in London. This is the fifth and final episode in our mini-series on South African wines. The goal with this series is to highlight the key regions, grapes, winemakers, and stories of the South African wine industry to distill this huge category into bite sized, educational pieces. Joining me for this episode about the Stellenbosch is our in-house South African wine expert, Aaron Meeker.  While the last four episodes covered wine regions specifically, this episode is about the industry at large. We talk about stereotypes and push back in the market and how the story of South African wine is being rewritten thanks to a number of movers and shakers in the US. We also talk about Vine Street's strategy for premiumizing South African wines. Through storytelling, persistence, and direct engagement with buyers, our goal has always been to cultivate a greater appreciation for South African wines.  Our conversation starts by going back to 2015 with an introductory email from Mick Craven, and how we got into South African wine knowing virtually nothing about this category...   00:46 Discovering South African Wine: A New Opportunity 01:33 Challenges and Learning Curves 02:03 Initial Knowledge and Perceptions 02:57 The Hard Sell and Changing Perceptions 03:48 Growth and Optimism 05:38 Key Players and Market Dynamics 07:15 Strategies for Success 10:02 The Long Game: Building a Market 12:46 The Future of South African Wine 18:55 Conclusion: The Road Ahead   Hosted by Charlotte Alsaadi. There's something special about when talent, vision, and respect are all wrapped up in a relationship. These attributes can provide people deeper meaning and drive which make dreams more attainable. Accomplishing a goal can be daunting on your own, but when you have partners who push you to be better—and complement each other in meaningful ways—that's when whole new opportunities can come to life. These ideas are at the core of this conversation with three co-founders of Kansas City's Vine Street Brewing. The business earned national attention last year as Missouri's first-ever black-owned brewery and from day one has backed it up with beloved beer and offering a space that quickly became a new and exciting part of the city's downtown life. Located in the historic Jazz District of Kansas City, you'll find all kinds of community connections stemming from the brewery, from beer collaborations, to music and film events, and more. Joining me to talk about what this means are Kemet Coleman, Elliott Ivory, and Woodie Bonds Jr. Each has taken different paths to this moment, but their shared connection—whether it be brewing backgrounds with Woodie and Elliott or Kemet's ability to bring people together—has allowed Vine Street to not just grow in its first year, but become a celebrated part of the Kansas City beer scene. What you'll hear from them offers a lot of tangible examples of what it looks like when talent, vision, and respect turn into something you can see, feel, and taste. And as the trio prepares for their second year in business, these things also offer them plenty to reflect on and use as motivation for Vine Street's future.

In this episode, which is number 14 of Danny Hurst´s London Monopoly board history series, he takes a look at Vine Street. It is one of the law-and-order squares, so it is associated with some really strange goings-on, including a 1791 case that involved auto-erotic asphyxiation, and a haunted police station. The street also has an odd connection with one of The Pogues' songs and The Marquis of Queensbury. KEY TAKEAWAYS It is the only square on the London Monopoly Board that does not have a pub. Crime was so high here that one of the passageways to Regent Street had to be gated off. The Police station in the street was closed but had to reopen because of the crime rate. It is now demolished. The adjacent Free Parking square is a reminder that surprisingly there are still quite a lot of free parking places available in Central London. BEST MOMENTS ‘People on the Monopoly pub crawl have to drink around the corner on Swallow Street now. ´ ‘Vine Street is the most expensive of the orange cards on the London Monopoly board.' ‘The adjacent Free Parking Square is enough to make most people snort derisively.'   EPISODE RESOURCES Shop for all official versions of Monopoly here - https://www.amazon.co.uk/stores/page/785DC233-0A69-4DF8-98E9-4F50CC50A59E HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Jenny experienced adverse racist comments from the security guard.Following training she was posted to Vine Street. She was taken to meet the borough commander whose opening gambit was to ask one of the male members if they masturbate! As a probationer she was paired up with an officer who clearly had no time for her. She was unable to establish if it was because she was a probationer, black or a female or a combination of all 3.Jenny experienced discriminatory language that her Sgt considered to be acceptable, he stated that it was his way of “Toughening her up”. People were openly racist and when that stopped, they became more sexist.Jenny recalls the murder of Yvonne Fletcher in April 1984. On that day she was visiting a police station and following the shooting of Yvonne a well-meaning friend called Jenny`s mum to ask after her welfare which caused some concerns.Jenny worked at NCIS and TSG – When she was posted to the drug squad her colleagues believed that she was “A Spy”, they had read a file and there was a memo relating to jenny and the Black Police Association.Jenny discusses her views regarding Stop and Search and her personal experiences. Its clear that Jenny is a person who has high standards and truly believes that the police should deal with the problems that senior management has caused. She is an advocate of getting the right person for the job and diversity should be part of recruitment process. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In no way, shape or form did Nigel and Nick think their little show about beer and other stuff would last this long. But here we are. Three years and 100 episodes later, the guys are still going strong spreading the word about Kansas City's beer scene and collecting engaging stories from throughout the US and beyond just because they've found beer to be the best doorway into your lives. The 100th episode was recorded live from Vine Street Brewing in Kansas City and featured several repeat guests, as well as a few new ones. And, Junior, since you didn't bother to come out, we're not telling you what beers we drank! Just kidding, there were too many to list. A big thank you to Annie, Woodie and the Vine Street gang for hosting us, the balloons and cake were a great surprise. And additional thanks to everyone who came out to celebrate us — many of which brought us new beers! Love and cheers to all. Beer is for everyone and Beer Karma is real.

Matt Gant (Gant & Co.) Part 1 - Matt's story from the Barossa to the Douro to Margaret River

Today's episode is with Matt Gant from Gant & Co. wines based in Karridale at the southern tip of Margaret River, Australia. Matt has been a friend of Vine Street for the last two decades. We began importing his First Drop line from the Barossa in about 2004/2005. We no longer work with First Drop – nor does Matt – but last year we picked up his newest venture, Gant & Co. These wines come from the family estate established by Claudia's father in Karridale, which is a cool-climate subregion of Margaret River, highly influenced by both the Indian and Southern oceans. The lineup includes a Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc, which is made in a savory rather than fruity style with lees aging and subtle oak presence, as well as two lighter-bodied reds. The first is called Nouveau. It's made in the Portuguese Palhete style, which is a nod to Matt's many years working in Portugal. He is actually currently a partner in a project at Quinta da Pedra Alta in the Douro, and this co-ferment of red and white varieties is similar to the base wine of port prior to fortification. Think crushable, chillable red that's also a really serious wine made from dry-farmed grapes, indigenous yeast, etc. etc. Finally, the Jeune is a light red blend of Cab, Merlot, and Malbec, and it's made in what Erin Larkin from the Wine Advocate calls “a summertime Cabernet.” Listen to the second episode of this interview to hear me fangirling over this wine. These wines disprove every trite American perception of Australian wine as sunshine in a bottle. They are light and acid-driven, yet pack so much flavor and texture onto that slender frame. They're really great wines, and they're such an incredible value, especially for Australian wine these days. Our conversation is split into two parts: in the first episode we talk about Matt's background, and how his palate has evolved over the years thanks to his time working abroad. In the second episode, we get into Karridale and the wines. To begin, Matt started by sharing with me his very first memory of wine growing up – not in Australia, but in a small town near in the county of Essex, just northeast of London...   Hosted by Charlotte Alsaadi. Today's episode is with Martin DiCuzzo, the owner and winemaker of Magna Montis based in Argentina's Uco Valley. Magna Montis is the first Argentinian producer that Vine Street has ever imported. Ronnie was really drawn to these wines because they're so unlike the typical fruit bomb stereotype of wines from Mendoza. They are super fresh and bright, even the ones aged in oak. If you know the rest of our portfolio that is largely built off the “new wave” ethos – you'll know instantly that they fit right in. The lineup includes three Malbecs – there's the Tupungato, which is fruit-forward, fresh and bright, the Paraje Altamira which is aged in oak and is more classic in its profile, and the Machinte, the most premium wine, which is very elegant and powerful – as well as one uniquely floral and saline Chardonnay. In this two part conversation with Martin, we talk a lot about this new chapter of Argentinian wine. Part 1 is all about Martin's background, including his nearly four year stint living in China working for Bodegas Norton as an Asian distribution manager. We talk about how he got into winemaking without any formal education, and his big hopes and dreams for his country's wine reputation. In Part 2, you'll hear about the praise Martin got from Tim Atkin in his first ever vintage, his experience meeting Ronnie and the Vine street team for the first time – including how Ronnie simply could not believe that Martin had never heard of the Grateful Dead – and of course, we'll touch on the wines and the reasons behind his winemaking ethos. Martin grew up in a pretty quiet neighborhood in a middle class family. His childhood obsession, which turned into something of a lifelong passion, was music. He had a rock band and even started his own company importing music electronics. For much of his twenties, it really didn't seem like wine was anywhere in his future…   Hosted by Charlotte Alsaadi Special thanks to SNACKTIME for the music!  Vine Street Imports Instagram  |  Website
