Send us a textThe concept of spiritual gifts lies at the heart of Christian service and community building. In Pastor Mark's recent message, he draws a critical distinction between worldly charisma and spiritual charisma that every believer needs to understand. While today's definition of charisma typically describes someone who can draw attention to themselves, spiritual charisma (or spiritual gifts) serves an entirely different purpose in God's kingdom.Spiritual gifts, as explained in 1 Corinthians, are divine endowments given to every believer by the Holy Spirit. These gifts aren't meant to elevate the individual but rather to strengthen and build up the church body. Pastor Mark emphasizes that these gifts are expressions of God's grace—undeserved, unmerited favor that empowers believers to share in God's reconciliation work. The spotlight should never be on the gift-bearer but on Jesus Christ, whom we are called to glorify through our service.Drawing from 1 Corinthians 14, Pastor Mark illustrates how the early church struggled with this very issue. The Corinthian believers were using their spiritual gifts—particularly speaking in tongues—in ways that brought glory to themselves rather than edifying the church. Paul's instruction was clear: "Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church." This teaching remains profoundly relevant today when self-promotion often overshadows genuine service.A critical understanding emerges from this teaching: our spiritual gifts are not personal possessions to be paraded for attention but rather tools for ministry entrusted to us for the benefit of others. Just as a natural gift is something given without expectation of return and primarily benefits the recipient, our spiritual gifts should operate in the same manner. God's ultimate gift—sending Jesus—didn't benefit God but humanity. Similarly, our gifts aren't meant to benefit ourselves but others in the body of Christ.Pastor Mark offers three essential applications for believers. First, we must serve with our gifts. When we require an audience to give maximum effort, pride has elevated ourselves above Christ's example of humble service. Jesus himself said in Mark 10:45 that He "came not to be ministered unto, but to minister and give His life as a ransom for many." Second, we must cultivate our gifts through practice, development, and attention. Scripture instructs us not to neglect our spiritual gifts but to "stir them up" and "fan them into flame." Third, we must avoid maneuvering or positioning ourselves or others for personal gain through our gifts.True spiritual maturity is demonstrated not by showcasing our gifts but by using them to strengthen others without seeking recognition.As we reflect on how we're utilizing our spiritual gifts, Pastor Mark challenges us with four penetrating questions: Does my gift benefit me or others? Am I developing my gift routinely? Am I trying to maneuver myself into prominence rather than allowing God to promote me through humility? After being deemed high-risk in her first pregnancy- despite feeling great and not presenting with any issues- Najma was taken down the conveyor belt of industrial birth. In honor of Black Maternal Health Week, we have doula- turned -Radical Birth Keeper, Olivyah Bowens, from Baltimore, Maryland on the show today. Olivyah is a mother of two, a perinatal community health worker, a holistic birth educator, and a graduate of Free Birth Society's Radical Birth Keeper School. After learning about the atrocious maternal mortality rate of Black women in the United States, Olivyah committed herself to understanding why Black women were dying. Olivyah walks us through the intersection of racism and healthcare, and how it directly, and obviously, negatively impacts Black women and their families. Olivyah will also provide historical context of racism in OB/GYN and how that links to institutional racism in health care today. Rebecca left her first hospital birth thinking that the doctors saved her life. She went on to become a doula in the system, but all that did was normalize her traumatic birth experience. After removing her IUD unassisted, Rebecca discovered a newfound trust for her body. When she found out she was pregnant again, she asked for two things from her partner: total trust, and total support to birth unassisted at home. Rebecca herself remained in total trust throughout her pregnancy, despite bleeding often. She birthed her baby in her bathroom, with her family present, and in total power. Rebecca also shares the autonomous pregnancy release she experienced, and the mantra that gets her through anything. It was following the death of her father, that Rebecca got total clarity that it was time to call in her children. Rebecca shares about the harassment she dealt with from the NHS midwives in England, and how medical supposed midwifery felt wrong the entire time. It was following the death of her father, that Rebecca got total clarity that it was time to call in her children. Rebecca shares about the harassment she dealt with from the NHS midwives in England, and how medical supposed midwifery felt wrong the entire time. We renew the covenants we made at baptism every week when we partake of the Sacrament. In this sense, this mighty change is still occurring within each of us. “True conversion brings a change in one’s beliefs, heart, and life to accept and conform to the will of God," (Bednar, 2012)“Knowing the gospel is true is the essence of testimony. Consistently being true to the gospel is the essence of conversion. We should know the gospel is true and be true to the gospel.” (Bednar, 2012)Repentance is so much bigger than turning away from our sins.“To repent fully is to convert completely to the Lord, Jesus Christ and to His holy work.” (Nelson, 2007)When we choose to change, we are submitting our will to the Lord’s. Our will--our agency--is the only thing that is uniquely ours to give Him. Our testimony is a gift from God to us. Repentance and full conversion is our gift to God. Repentance is about daily turning our focus back to God. It means recommitting ourselves to God--and deepening that commitment by putting off the natural man and yielding to the Spirit. And that means doing what Sister Craven said--changing our thoughts, our habits, the direction of our lives, and our hearts.Alma asks a compelling question -- “Can ye feel so now?”But what do we do when the answer to this question is “no,” or “I don’t know,” or “I’m not sure?”If asking means prayer, and seeking means searching and studying the scriptures, then what does knocking mean? And what is opened up to us when we knock?We "knock" when we honor our covenants, when we repent daily and strive to align ourselves with the attributes of Christ. We “knock” when we attend the temple, when we stand in holy places and make holy the places where we stand. We knock when we lose ourselves in the service of others and strive to put off the natural man. We knock by partaking of the Sacrament each week. “Knocking” is holding fast to the iron rod. What is opened to us as a result? Everything. We are blessed with spiritual gifts, strength to endure, increased light and expanded understanding. We partake of the fruit of the Tree of Life freely. And we gain eternal life, which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God. (D&C 14:7)DO ONE THINGThe phrase, “You haven’t changed a bit!” is meant to be a compliment. But is it? We are not here to remain “the same” as we were. Everything about God’s plan involves change.Pretend you are about to attend a class reunion. What will your friends say about you? What exactly is FIRE? Financial independence, retire early. Financial independence is based on the 4% rule which was formulated from the Trinity study, the idea is that if you can survive comfortably at a 4% withdrawal rate from your nest egg (invested assets), provided that the assets were invested in low-cost index funds, you essentially never had to work for money ever again. Which brings in the RE portion (retire early). If you can build up a nest egg with 25 times your annual expenses (inverse of 4%), you could essentially retire early. It just depends on how quickly you can build up those assets. This is the path that awaits most Americans. 40 years in an unfulfilling job, doing something you completely hate. This is depressing, yet this is the path most choose! The Solution? Being intentional with money. Choosing to live way below your means. Cody mentioned working in a W2 banking job, yet ONLY spending $12K a year. This is a choice Cody made to escape the hamster wheel! Cody also talked about building side hustles that can cover his monthly expenses, like starting a blog, podcast and a disc golf company. Everyone's journey will look completely different, but we can all implement these simple strategies and change our lives!
