Governor, Mark Singel offers wit, wisdom and guidance regarding events on the state and national levels. Seeking Truth in America is Singel's third book with Sunbury Press, and he discusses this collection of articles with host and founder Lawrence Knorr. These selected pieces are meant to provoke thought, and perhaps action, and Singel's desire for these was to make Pennsylvania and the nation a better place, and to pursue what the Founding Fathers called, "a more perfect union." A native of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, Mark Singel was elected to the state Senate in 1980, and won the Democratic nomination for Lt. Governor in 1986. He joined Governor Bob Casey, Sr. in Harrisburg and the pair won re-election in 1990. During their second term, Casey was diagnosed with a rare liver disorder, which forced Singel to step in and serve as Acting Governor between mid-June and mid-December, 1993. His experience was chronicled in A Year of Change and Consquences, his first book for Sunbury Press. Singel also discusses The Life and Loves of Thaddeus Stevens, a biography of the Pennsylvania Congressman who played a pivotal role in the Civil War period.

Racism is the way to a fascist's heart. Fascists don't like being called Nazis, because they feel they're so much more than that. Many of them think they're comedians. Many Nazis deserve to be punched, although some do get punched at a moment they don't deserve to be. A Miami judge determined that Ron DeSantis was picking on voters outside of his bailiwick. Gun violence erupted in multiple cities across the nation last weekend, but it was a mass shooting believed to be racially motivated in Buffalo, New York, that led many news reports this week. 18-year-old Payton Gendron is accused of killing 10 people Saturday at the Tops Friendly Market in a predominantly Black neighborhood of Buffalo. Wearing a helmet camera, the gunman livestreamed the shooting on Twitch. President Joe Biden mourned with Buffalo's grieving families on Tuesday and asked the nation to reject what he angrily labeled as the poison of white supremacy. On Thursday, Gendron appeared briefly in court after a grand jury indicted him on a first-degree murder charge. Even as prices continued to rise with inflation at a 40-year high, the Commerce Department said retail sales managed to rise 0.9% in April. However, by the middle of the week stocks continued to tumble and recession fears grew. Additionally, supply chain and production issues continued to wreak havoc for new parents desperate to find baby formula. President Joe Biden invoked the Defense Production Act to speed production of infant formula and has authorized flights to import supply from overseas. This came after regulators and Abbott Nutrition reached an agreement to reopen a plant in Michigan that had been closed since February due to contamination issues. There is hope production will resume in the next week. Multiple primaries were held Tuesday, with Pennsylvania, a key presidential battleground state, making headlines. The Pennsylvania primary for the open U.S. Senate seat was likely heading to a recount on the Republican side with heart surgeon-turned-TV celebrity Dr. Mehmet Oz and former hedge fund CEO David McCormick in a tight race. Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman won the Democratic nomination as he recovered from a stroke he suffered just days earlier. In Pennsylvania's GOP race for governor, far-right candidate Doug Mastriano, who had the backing of former President Donald Trump, will face Democrat Josh Shapiro, the state's attorney general, in the November general election. In North Carolina, Rep. Madison Cawthorn, the youngest member of Congress, was ousted by state Sen. Chuck Edwards. U.S. Rep. Ted Budd and former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley have won their respective Senate primaries. Budd led the 14-candidate Republican field while Beasley was the front-runner out of 11 for the Democratic nomination. They will face each other to replace the retiring Sen. Richard Burr. Former Oregon House Speaker Tina Kotek has won the Democratic gubernatorial primary governor, beating state Treasurer Tobias Read in a victory for the party's progressive wing. In other political news, printing errors marred the primaries and we have an update on the Jan. 6 committee. Highway deaths are on the rise and the Biden administration is hoping federal aid can help combat the crisis. His administration pledged $5 billion ahead of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration releasing data that revealed that nearly 43,000 people were killed on U.S. roads last year. There was some mixed news reported regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of coronavirus deaths globally dropped by about 21% in the past week. However, many cases rose in most parts of the world, according to the World Health Organization. Increased infections and hospitalizations are putting more of the country under guidelines issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that call for masking and other precautions. In related news, the death toll in the United States hit 1 million, the CDC has approved a booster for kids, some newer hospitals are struggling financially and conspiracy theories and misinformation tied to avian flue are spreading. In international news, the Russian invasion of Ukraine continued. The last defenders under siege at a steel plant in Mariupol surrendered and were classified as prisoners of war by the Red Cross. Both Finland and Sweden submitted applications to join NATO. In other news, McDonald's announced it was in the process of selling its Russian restaurants and Ukraine held a war crimes trial. More on those two stories from the AP. In response to another conflict, President Joe Biden signed an order to redeploy hundreds of U.S. troops to Somalia to counter an Islamic extremist rebel group. In other news on the world stage, Queen Elizabeth II made a rare public appearance and mountain climbers scaled Everest. More on those stories. This past week a country music legend was remembered, an Oscar-winning composer died, Ukraine was a central theme in the Eurovision song contest and Ringling Brothers is back, but with a twist. Multiple deadly shootings took place across the nation this weekend. Authorities say two people have been killed and three more were taken to a hospital after a shooting at a Houston bustling flea market. Milwaukee police are investigating three separate overnight shootings in which a 17-year-old boy and two men in their 20s died. The shootings late Saturday and early Sunday came a day after a night of violence in which 21 people were shot and wounded in three other attacks near the Fiserv Forum in downtown Milwaukee as the Bucks took on the Boston Celtics in Game 6 of their NBA playoffs series. In Buffalo, N.Y., authorities say a white, 18-year-old gunman in military gear who was livestreaming with a helmet camera opened fire with a rifle at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, killing 10 people and wounding three others. Officials say they are investigating the shooting Saturday afternoon as a racially motivated hate crime. Authorities say 11 victims are Black and two are white. Payton Gendron, of Conklin, New York, has been arraigned on a murder charge. Authorities have not commented on a document that purports to outline the attacker's racist beliefs. A man opened fire in a Southern California church, killing one person and wounding five others before worshippers detained him by hog-tying his legs with an electrical cord until authorities arrived. Officials did not immediately disclose a motive for the shooting at the Geneva Presbyterian Church in the city of Laguna Woods. McDonald's says it's started the process of selling its Russian business, which includes 850 restaurants that employ 62,000 people. The fast food giant pointed to the humanitarian crisis caused by the war, saying holding on to its business in Russia “is no longer tenable, nor is it consistent with McDonald's values.” A federal trial is set to begin for a lawyer for the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign. Michael Sussmann is accused of lying to the FBI as it investigated potential ties between Donald Trump and Russia in 2016. The case against Sussmann opens Monday in Washington's federal court with jury selection. Naomi Judd was celebrated with words and soaring music at a public memorial service. Sunday's “River of Time” public memorial was held at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. It included performances by Wynonna Judd and some of country's biggest stars, including Brad Paisley, Emmylou Harris and Brandi Carlile. Gov. and top Democratic U.S. Senate candidate John Fetterman is recovering from a stroke he said was caused by a heart condition called atrial fibrillation. His campaign said in a statement Sunday that he's on his way to a “full recovery." The 52-year-old Fetterman said that his campaign and his candidacy continues while he remains hospitalized in Lancaster. Finland and Sweden are both planning to apply for NATO membership as the secretary general of the organization, Jens Stoltenberg, says that war in Ukraine has not gone to plan for Russia. The United States is poised to remove five extremist groups, all believed to be defunct, from its list of foreign terrorist organizations. Several of these groups once posed significant threats, killing hundreds if not thousands of people across Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Although the groups are inactive, the decision is politically sensitive for the Biden administration and the countries in which the organizations operated, and could draw criticism from victims and their families still dealing with the losses of loved ones. The organizations include the Basque separatist group ETA , the Japanese cult Aum Shinrikyo, the radical Jewish group Kahane Kach and two Islamic groups that have been active in Israel, the Palestinian territories and Egypt. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the victory, Ukraine's third since its 2003 Eurovision debut, and said “we will do our best” to host next year's contest in the hotly contested port city of Mariupol. Abortion rights supporters were demonstrating this weekend at hundreds of marches and rallies where they're expressing their outrage that the Supreme Court appears prepared to scrap the constitutional right to abortion that has endured for nearly a half-century. Meanwhile, Justice Clarence Thomas says that the Supreme Court has been changed by the shocking leak of a draft opinion earlier this month. That opinion suggests the court is poised to overturn the right to an abortion recognized in Roe v. Wade. He described the leak as an unthinkable breach of trust. Thomas said at a conference in Dallas that: “When you lose that trust, especially in the institution that I'm in, it changes the institution fundamentally. You begin to look over your shoulder." A federal judge has blocked part of an Alabama law that makes it a felony to give gender-affirming puberty blockers and hormones to transgender minors. U.S. District Judge Liles Burke issued a preliminary injunction on Friday to stop the state from enforcing the medication ban while a court challenge goes forward. The law took effect on May 8. A former Tennessee nurse whose medication error killed a patient has been sentenced to three years of probation. Hundreds of health care workers rallied outside the Nashville courthouse Friday during the sentencing of RaDonda Vaught. They say criminalizing honest hospital mistakes will lead to more deaths in hospitals because health care workers won't be as forthcoming. Vaught apologized to relatives of the victim, Charlene Murphey, and several said she wouldn't have wanted to see her jailed. Vaught was found guilty of criminally negligent homicide and gross neglect of an impaired adult.
