In this episode, Ron Toft walks us through Acts 10 and 11 in a powerful, personal teaching about one of the most pivotal turning points in the New Testament—the moment the gospel reaches beyond the Jewish world and into the life of a Roman centurion named Cornelius. Ron unpacks Peter's vision, the surprising work of the Holy Spirit, and what it means for us today when God says, “What I have made clean, you must not call unclean.”From ancient tensions between Jews and Gentiles to our own modern-day boundaries, this episode invites us to ask: Who are our Gentiles? Who do we still see as outside the reach of grace?Join the conversation as we reflect on God's expansive love, the challenge of welcoming “even them,” and how this story continues to shape our identity as a community.Kindred Church is a Christian community gathering in Reno, Nevada. In this video, I take a deep dive into Acts 11 and explore Peter's encounter with Cornelius. Cornelius was a devout man who sought to truly know God, and through a Messenger , he was told to call for Peter. This event marked a significant turning point, demonstrating that salvation was not limited to the Jews but extended to the Gentiles as well.

These days I find myself in a pensive, troubled state, very much in need of the kind of consolation that only music can provide. A number of years ago, I published a pair of episodes featuring the sublime Margaret Price performing music of mourning and consolation. Today's episode presents an expanded and refurbished version of the second of those episodes, in a program composed entirely of art song, moving through a sequence of emotions surrounding loss. Composers include Johannes Brahms, Giuseppe Verdi, Robert Schumann, Enrique Granados, Franz Schubert, Grace Williams, Sergei Rachmaninov, Felix Mendelssohn, Philip Cannon, Hugo Wolf, Alban Berg, Maurice Ravel, Franz Liszt, Peter Cornelius, and Richard Strauss, and collaborating pianists and conductors include Claudio Abbado, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Cyprien Katsaris, Geoffrey Parsons, and Neville Marriner, as well as frequent collaborators James Lockhart and Thomas Dewey. A thorough traversal of the song repertoire by one of the supreme recitalists of the late 20th Century. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. In February our beloved Elly Ameling turns 92. I cannot think of another classical singer who recorded more Christmas albums over the course of her career. One of the most obscure of these is the 1980 release “Christmas with Elly Ameling,” which was briefly available on LP, but never re-released in any format. I present it to you here complete, albeit reordered. A highlight is her performance of the delightful “Weihnachtslieder” by the German romantic composer Peter Cornelius, accompanied by Dalton Baldwin. Also included are works by Alphons Diepenbrock, Hugo Wolf, Alessandro Scarlatti, Richard Strauss, and Max Reger. That record is supplemented by excerpts from two of her earliest recordings, 1960's “A Christmas Fantasy,” alongside Countermelody favorite Bernard Kruysen; and 1963's “Christmas Music of the Renaissance.” Also included are a Haydn Advent cantata and two traditional Spanish carols 1977's “Christmas Songs from Europe,” arranged by Joaquín Nin; rounded off by two exquisite Bach selections from an even rarer Elly recording, a 1979 festive Christmas concert at the Grote Kerk in Monnickendam. All of these represent Elly Ameling at her charming and exquisite best and are sure to put even the Scroogiest of my listeners in the Christmas spirit. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Simultaneously, Peter, a devoted Jew, has a vision that challenges his deeply held beliefs about purity and the Gentile world. When these two men meet, it is more than a clash of cultures; it's a divine appointment that redefines the scope of God's kingdom. Peter proclaims the gospel, and the Holy Spirit falls upon Cornelius and his household, erasing all distinctions between Jew and Gentile.Study NotesOverview:Introduction to Cornelius:Cornelius is a centurion in the Italian Regiment, living in Caesarea, a Gentile city. Despite being a Gentile, he is described as devout and God-fearing, known for his generosity and regular prayers.Cornelius receives a vision from an angel of God instructing him to send for Peter, who is staying in Joppa.Cornelius Calls for Peter:Cornelius obeys the vision and sends two of his servants and a devout soldier to Joppa to find Peter.Peter's Vision:As Cornelius's men are on their way to Joppa, Peter has a vision of a sheet descending from heaven, filled with all kinds of animals, both clean and unclean according to Jewish dietary laws.A voice tells Peter to kill and eat the animals, but Peter objects, having never eaten anything impure or unclean. The voice responds, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean." This happens three times, emphasizing the importance of the message.  Peter is left wondering about the vision's meaning when Cornelius's men arrive.Peter's Obedience:The Holy Spirit instructs Peter to go with the men without hesitation. Peter meets them and learns about Cornelius's vision.Key Themes:God's Impartial Love: The visions given to Cornelius and Peter illustrate that God's love and salvation are available to all people, regardless of their cultural or religious background.Breaking Barriers: Peter's vision challenges the deeply entrenched Jewish beliefs about purity and the separation from Gentiles. God is making it clear that the old divisions are no longer valid in the new covenant.Application:Inclusiveness of the Gospel: We are reminded that the gospel is for everyone, and we should not let cultural or societal barriers prevent us from sharing God's love.Obedience to God's Call: Both Cornelius and Peter show obedience to God's direction, even when it challenges their understanding. We, too, should be open to God's leading, even when it takes us out of our comfort zones.Seeking God: Cornelius is an example of a true seeker of God, illustrating that God will make Himself known to those who earnestly seek Him.For further reflection, download our study notes and questions from our website or the Patreon Page.Support the showJeremy McCandless is creating podcasts and devotional resources | PatreonHelp us continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com

An episode from Liberty Behind Bars Ministry, a ministry serving the incarcerated across America located in Belfast, New York. The Scriptures : We believe that “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,” 2nd Timothy 3:16 by which we understand that the whole Bible “came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” 2nd Peter 1:21.  The Scriptures, originally recorded by Spirit led men, have been faithfully translated and preserved in our English Language.  We believe the Authorized Version (A.V. 1611) is infallible and selfless: our final authority for all matters of faith and practice. Christ's Advent: We believe that the eternal Son of God came into this world that He might manifest God to men, fulfill prophecy, and become the Redeemer of a lost world. He was born of a virgin, conceived by the Holy Ghost, received a human body, and a sinless nature. Salvation: We believe that, owing to death through sin, no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless born again. This redemption has been accomplished solely by the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, who was made to be sin, dying in our stead, and that He was bodily and physically raised from the dead for our justification. We believe that the new birth of the believer is an act of the Holy Ghost and comes only through individual faith in Christ. The Church: We believe that God has ordained that through the local church the Gospel of Jesus Christ is to be spread and that it is the duty of everyone who is born again to seek out a local fellowship for the furtherance of the Gospel and his own edification. I spent half of my life in and out of jails, prisons, rehabs, and other facilities.  Unfortunately, the programs that were offered did not help me to become a productive member of society, it just made me a better inmate.  What changed me, was a new life in Jesus Christ and reading/studying a King James Bible. Many prisons, jails, and other institutions have heard from many of their inmates that they are changed due to religion.  However, most are seen back within the next year or two. As God gave Moses a burden for the Children of Israel, so God gave me a burden for those in jails and prisons. Churches send missionaries to foreign countries, in support, hopes and prayers, they can win the nationals to Jesus, train them and then send the nationals back to their own people. This is what Jesus has done for me. He saved me out of this life of crimes and addiction, and now sends me back to my people who are in jails/prisons, to win them to Christ and send them back to their own people This is where Liberty Behind Bars Ministry steps in.  Not only do we minister to those behind the jail walls we help them transition into society; differently than they did in the past.  The goal is to break the cycle of recidicism and help people have a changed life in Jesus Christ.  I have my Doctorate in Christian Biblical Counseling and use this knowledge to not only help those within the jail/prison walls, but also to support their family members.   You may also write to us at: Liberty Behind Bars Ministry P.O. For my second holiday episode this year, I turn to the music of my “other” country, Germany, the land of my forebears, where I have lived for the last decade. Christmas is celebrated in a different way here than anywhere else in the world in my experience. I have chosen to play music by German composers who in effect created a subgenre, the Christmas song cycle. The most famous of these is no doubt the Weihnachtslieder cycle by the 19th century German composer Peter Cornelius, who set a standard that was furthered by a number of 20th century composers as well: Joseph Haas (Krippenlieder), Richard Trunk (Weihnachtslieder), and Mark Lothar (Kleine Weihnachtsgeschichte). In these works certain interesting tropes recur, both theological (primary among them the inner thoughts and premonitions of Mary) and psychological (experiencing the return of a more innocent time by seeing the joy of the season through the eyes of a child). I have chosen recordings by singers both celebrated (Irmgard Seefried, Peter Schreier) and less well-known (Wolfgang Anheisser, Nikolaus Hillebrand), all of whom give performances that I hope will bring us closer to the spirit of the season.
