Phil Iscove joins to discuss the work of the visionary director and his brilliant, underseen sequel to everyone's favorite talking pig movie, 'Babe: Pig in the City'. Following the breakout success of 1995's 'Babe', Miller delivered a darker, more adventurous story that sees the titular pig braving a cold, indifferent Metropolis (featuring a fascinating assembly of familiar landmarks from cityscapes around the world) and winning the hearts of its embittered animal residents through his courage, cunning, and compassion. Gene Siskel's #1 film of 1998 and a favorite of musician and actor Tom Waits, the film has steadily found its faithful audience after an initially disappointing box office run, anticipating some of Miller's careerlong challenges with compelling audiences to gamble on his bold visions. We discuss the film's narrative and thematic swings, how Miller takes the story in fascinating new directions, and why the filmmaker's insistence on never repeating himself becomes both the film's greatest asset and its toughest barrier for entry. Then, we assess the movie's incredible technical achievements, and why making this film feels like it might have been just as challenging as Miller's work on any of the Mad Max films. We also praise the film's willingness to embrace difficult emotions and never shy away from challenging its target audience of young viewers with harrowing and heartrending scenes of animals in extrememly human experiences of distress, opression, and danger. Finally, we turn our eyes to George Miller's latest entry in his long-running action series, 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga'. Epic in scope, bold in vision, and featuring some of Miller's most ambitious storytelling, 'Furiosa' has been embraced critically, but is failing to find its audience, with disappointing box office returns and a near-guaruntee of a short theatrical run.On the back half of this episode, we make the case for 'Furiosa', praise its grandeur as well as its nuance, and offer up some readings of the film that challenge many of the common criticisms we've seen so far.Follow Phil Iscove on Twitter.Listen to and support Podcast Like It's... on Patreon and wherever you stream podcasts.....Our theme song is 'Mirror' by Chris Fish.

Mickey & Tom are thrilled to be joined by Phil Iscove, co-host of* Podcast Like It's 1999*. They talk the TV industry, the films of 1999, and plenty of the random off-shoots you'd expect when your two diatribe-prone hosts are joined by an equally pop-culture obsessed guest. Then they get into a truly wild movie, Phil's beloved Babe: Pig In The City (1998). Can Phil make the case for the oft-dismissed film? Is a talking pig a bridge too far for Tom? It's time to see if you're missing out. And then they were down to three contestants in the Mr. Podcast Like its 1999 pageant: Phil Iscove, Kenny Neibart and Jarett Wieselman (Netflix Social). With all three men tied, it would come down to their answers in the interview portion.    Phil went first and his question was: "If you were stuck on a desert island, what one movie from 1999 would you take with you and why is it Drop Dead Gorgeous?" But Phil protested that it would actually be either Magnolia, The Straight Story or Toy Story 2 - depending upon who was asking the question - and was eliminated from competition.    Kenny was up next and was asked: "Which character from Drop Dead Gorgeous do you most relate to?" But when Kenny responded it was Denise Richard's character Becky Ann Leeman, the booing and hissing was so loud it drowned out the remainder of his answer and he was awarded zero points.    Finally, Jarett was asked: "Why isn't Drop Dead Gorgeous available on any streaming service in the world?" Jarett went into a violent rage and murdered everyone as a homage to Drop Dead Gorgeous, leaving the judges no choice but to award Mr. Podcast Like It's 1999 to... Kirsten Dunst!

Just in time for the Fourth of July, Podcast Like It's 1999 brings you 1999's Most American film!   Phil Iscove, Kenny Neibart and TV Writer Jim Campolongo (Station 19, White Collar) take a big, old Red, White and Blue dive into the world of... snuff films? Wait, what? We're releasing the snuff movie on Independence Day?    (Well, let's see if we can make this work using my questionable understanding of the American Revolution almost entirely gleaned from Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton..)   Nicolas Cage plays a private detective. He's kind of like the... George Washington (?) of this movie.    He's tasked with helping an old lady (Martha Washington -- or maybe she represents the Colonies themselves?) with figuring out whether her husband (easy, King George III) had a young woman raped and murdered on film (okay, the young woman represents the collective victims of the Boston Massacre?!).   On Cage's journey (Washington's March from Newport to Yorktown), he encounters many colorful characters (Rochambeau, Lafayette, other Hamilton references) and finds one odd fellow played by Joaquin Phoenix, willing to be his unlikely Right-Hand Man (HAMILTON HIMSELF! THIS IS WORKING!!!).    Together they enter the dark, sordid world of underground fringe porn and snuff film (New Jersey) where they find the man responsible for the snuff film, Peter Stormare (General Howe). Joaquin meets his untimely end (not gonna gloat or anything, but...) and Cage, like Washington, wins the day, but loses a bit of himself in the process.    Then he becomes President.

Podcast Like It's 1999: Episode 29 - The Star Wars One    Turmoil has engulfed the Podcast. The ultimate evaluation of The Phantom Menace is in dispute, and the fate of the entire Star Wars saga hangs in the balance.   Hoping to resolve the matter with a two-part podcast, the cynical Phil Iscove and the skeptical Kenny Neibart have called for a summit on the matter.    While the hosts endlessly debate this alarming entry in the Star Wars canon, the Supreme Chancellor has secretly dispatched Supergirl writer Eric Carrasco, the guardian of the Star Wars prequels, to settle the conflict....

Phil Iscove, Kenny Neibart and Barry Hertz of The Globe and Mail were selected to be the first people ever to discuss David Cronenberg’s eXistenZ on a podcast. And what they experienced will challenge your beliefs about the very nature of podcasting. You may think that you can’t discuss Canadian Film History on a podcast. But You Can. You may think that you can’t listen to three grown men talking about the viability of a gun made of fish bones and human teeth. But You Will. You may think that Kenny and Phil never disagree on the overall merits of a film. But They Did. Join us so you can decide for yourself. That is, if this podcast ever really happened in the first place.

Hey yo, so we got something you might be interested in. It’s a podcast. A real nice podcast. It’s got Phil Iscove and Kenny Neibart and a discussion about Harold Ramis’ mob spoof “Analyze This.” You know, that funny movie where Bobby DeNiro plays a mafia boss with a case of the yips so he hires a shrink who’s played by that guy, you know the one, the comedian with the curly hair who loves Sammy Davis Jr. and baseball? That guy. A mobster going to a shrink! You’d think it was a fantasy not a comedy cuz everyone knows real mobsters ain’t need no psychological evaluation, capiche? But this podcast, we think it’ll be worth your time time. And, if you’re not satisfied, you can take a long walk off a short pier, alright? Download the podcast and tell your friends about. Go on. Do it. We clear? Alright, you’re a good kid.

On a cold, dark February day, two podcasters (Phil Iscove and Kenny Neibart) and a special guest (Todd VanDerWerff of Vox.com) entered a podcasting studio to discuss the seminal found footage film, The Blair Witch Project. Their plan was to discuss how this film, made for only $35,000, grossed nearly $250 million and changed Hollywood forever, in a funny and insightful way.    But the three were never heard from again.    This is the audio footage they left behind.
