James Robinson, new General and Artistic Director of Seattle Opera, introduces the 2025/26 season. The Pirates of Penzance promises a musically extraordinary operatic approach to Gilbert & Sullivan; come prepared to laugh and to enjoy some familiar music as you've never heard it before. Daphne In Concert offers a rare opportunity to hear a lush Romantic masterpiece by Richard Strauss, an orchestral tour de force with splendid voices. Fellow Travelers, by Gregory Spears & Greg Pierce, is one of the most successful new American operas of the past decade: a bittersweet gay romance hidden inside a political thriller. And Carmen returns in a powerful production conducted by Seattle's beloved Ludovic Morlot and starring some of our favorite singers. Musical examples include excerpts from a 1959 Glyndebourne Pirates of Penzance, conducted by Malcolm Sargent and starring George Baker, Elsie Morison, and James Milligan; the 1964 Vienna Festival Daphne conducted by Karl Böhm and starring Hilde Gueden, Fritz Wunderlich, and James King; the recording of Fellow Travelers' world premiere, 2016 at Cincinnati Opera and starring Aaron Blake, Joseph Lattanzi, and Devon Guthrie, with the Cincinnati Symphony conducted by Mark Gibson; and Seattle Opera recordings of Carmen from 2019, Les Troyens from 2025, starring J'Nai Bridges and conducted by Ludovic Morlot, and Hansel und Gretel from 2016 starring Sasha Cooke and conducted by Sebastian Lang-Lessing.

Gilbert and Sullivan were a prolific Victorian-era duo known for their comic operas, also referred to as operettas. The partnership comprised of dramatist W. S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan, and together they created 14 operettas... H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado to name just 3 of the most popular shows. The Railroad Hour produced radio adaptations of musicals of all types with Gordon MacRae taking the lead vocal role and other very talented people, some Metropolitan Opera stars, filling in the other roles. I have a playlist of "Railroad Hour" programs on this website.

Writer and resident Gilbert & Sullivan expert Julia Sirmons joins to discuss Mike Leigh's 'Topsy-Turvy', a story of the aforementioned musical duo and the production of one of their most popular shows, 'The Mikado'. It's a film that feels at once like an outliler in Leigh's career up to that point (his first film not set in contemporary working-class London) and a pitch-perfect culmination of many of his career-long explorations. We begin with a discussion about the legacy of director Mike Leigh, his unusual method for drawing brilliant performances from his ensemble of some of the very best British actors, and his trademark style and narrative construction. Then, we unpack the works of Gilbert & Sullivan, exploring Topsy-Turvy's commitment to authenticity in its recreation of 19th century English theater culture, and the wise decision to focus the film on a particularly unstable moment in the long collaboration between the wordsmith and composer. Finally, we discuss the film's evocation of art and its production process, emphasizing the granular repetition of the work as well as the undergirding capitalist mechanics that necessitated performers assume a strong identity as a collective labor force. Stede Bonnet lived a life of luxury in Barbados, inheriting from his father an over 400-acre sugarcane plantation, along with 94 slaves. But in late 1716, when he was 29 years old, Bonnet decided to leave behind his plantation, his wife, and his three surviving children, all under the age of 5, to become a pirate, despite having no experience even captaining a ship. As Captain Charles Johnson put it in A General History of the Pyrates: “He had the least Temptation of any Man to follow such a Course of Life, from the Condition of his Circumstances,” blaming it on a “Disorder in his Mind.” So why did Bonnet leave behind his privileged life, and would he have made the choice again if he knew how it would turn out? Joining me in this episode to help us understand more about Stede Bonnet and his possible motivations is freelance historian Jeremy R. Moss, author of The Life and Tryals of the Gentleman Pirate, Major Stede Bonnet. Our theme song is Frogs Legs Rag, composed by James Scott and performed by Kevin MacLeod, licensed under Creative Commons. The mid-episode audio is “Oh, Better Far To Live And Die,” from The Pirates Of Penzance, written by Gilbert & Sullivan and performed by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1959, available via the Internet Archive. The episode image is: “Print engraving of Stede Bonnet in Charles Johnson's A General History of the Pyrates,” Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons. The HBO Show loosely based on the life of Stede Bonnet that we reference in the episode is Our Flag Means Death, created by David Jenkins and starring Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet and Taika Wititi as Blackbeard. Mike made a terrible mistake. This week he and Allyson watch the big screen adaptation of Gilbert & Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance, when in reality it was the Pirate Movie Mike meant for them to watch. Uh-oh! When life gives you lemons, make a murder podcast. Mike tries to salvage the episode by taking a deep dive into the complicated life and death of Penzance's Modern Major General George Rose. George Rose was a Broadway legend, but his murder in the Dominican Republic leaves him literally lost to history in an unmarked grave. At the center of the eccentric thespian's death is his 18-year-old adopted "son". Our series of piratical tales continues with The Pirates of Penzance! They said it couldn't be done. They meant it probably shouldn't be done. Nevertheless, we did it. You are about to hear the first installment of the audiobook version of The Pirates of Penzance. It's based on the libretto from W. S. Gilbert, of Gilbert and Sullivan fame. I've sought to keep all the original material in the libretto, and adding whatever else was necessary to make the tale a narrative, rather than an operetta. I've done this treatment with plays before, but not with operettas. I found it a rare opportunity to really focus on the sharp writing of the piece, once stripped of the beloved music. There's nothing like live theatre. But here's something that's a bit more portable. And now, The Pirates of Penzance, Part 1 of 2, by W.S. Gilbert. Riding high on the tide of their smash success, H.M.S. Pinafore, W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan enjoyed celebrity on both sides of the Atlantic. While engaged in defending the integrity of their work against inferior pirated versions, they hastily completed and premiered a show about a group of inferior pirates. Pirates of Penzance is almost certainly Gilbert and Sullivan's most enduringly popular collaboration, giving us memorable tunes and characters such as the steadfast Mabel, the swashbuckling Pirate King, and the Very Model of a Modern Major General. By turns hilarious, incisive, and thrilling, this masterful operetta is a joy to experience. Furthermore, in keeping with the spirit of a Gilbert and Sullivan presentation, we have a one-act “opener,” Cox and Box. This show, though comic and tuneful, pre-dates the famous partnership, and pairs Sullivan's compositions with a libretto by F.C. Burnand. It's a charming farce, with a most unusual lullabye! Hosted by Pat and Rosie
