Today on Countermelody the first of two (for now) episodes celebrating the creators of George Gershwin's legendary (and controversial) opera Porgy and Bess. Today we explore the fascinating life (and scant recorded legacy) of Anne Wiggins Brown, who was born in Baltimore on August 09, 1912, and died in Oslo on March 13, 2009. Like Muriel Smith, who a few years later created the title role of Carmen Jones on Broadway, Brown was still a student at the time she created the role of Bess. In Brown's case, she was enrolled at the Juilliard School, one of the very first Black students admitted to the venerable institution. She was possessed of an admirable musical pedigree on her mother's side; her father was a doctor and the family was raised in relative privilege in Baltimore. This, however, did not mean that all doors were open to the young would-be singer, who found her way by sheer determination and willpower. These same traits led to her being cast in the female lead of Gershwin's Broadway opera, as well as a close working relationship with the composer, who expanded the role from a secondary part to having her name included in the title. Brown sang more than 500 performances of Bess around the world, but in 1948 chose to settle in Norway, where she married Thorleif Schjelderup, an Olympic skier who also became an author an environmentalist. Though she occasionally returned to the United States, Norway remained her home until her death at the age of 96. Brown's career included significant concertizing and operatic appearances throughout the world. Eventually severe asthma led to her sudden retirement from the stage in 1955. She often decried the ugly spectre of racism, which she felt also curtailed and restricted her career. After her retirement, she became a noted voice teacher and stage director, leading several noteworthy productions of Porgy in the 1960s. This episode includes the vast majority of her slim recorded output, which include various excerpts from Porgy (in effect the very first Original Cast Album), as well as a collection of rare Norwegian recordings of spirituals, folk songs, and art songs in which she reveals a strong, true voice and a deeply musical sensibility, showing herself to be yet another artist whose artistic significance matches her historical importance. The episode opens with a heartfelt (and heartbroken) tribute to the great Roberta Flack, who died in the morning hours of February 24th. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Sophie shares her journey from a passionate, young dancer in the UK to becoming a triple-threat performer gracing the stages of London's West End and New York's Broadway. She opens up about her early obsession with dance, recounting how she would ask her mom to book a local church hall for extra practice and record her rehearsals so she could critique herself. This early dedication set the stage for her successful career, which began in the West End and eventually led her to Broadway. She looks back on her audition process for “Moulin Rouge!” on a Zoom call during the pandemic, where she had to convince director Alex Timbers that she could bring a fresh, fierce energy to the role of Nini. She also touches on her transition into TV and film, celebrating her first non-musical acting role in the UK soap “Casualty” as a major milestone that showcased her versatility beyond dance and singing. Performing in a show like “Moulin Rouge!”, she finds joy in being part of a close-knit cast that becomes like a second family. She discusses the differences between working in the UK and the US, especially the accessibility and financial challenges performers face. With a deep love for performing, Sophie imparts a piece of advice to aspirants, encouraging them to stretch themselves in areas where they aren't as strong and to live a balanced life that includes fun and downtime.  Sophie Carmen-Jones has appeared in several West End productions and UK tours, including “Moulin Rouge!”, “Jersey Boys”, “Wicked”, “We Will Rock You”, and “Chicago”. Her film and TV credits include the live-action films of “The Little Mermaid”, “Cats”, “Aladdin”, and “Beauty and the Beast”, and she recently made her Broadway debut in the Broadway production of “Moulin Rouge!” as Nini.  Connect with Sophie: Instagram: @sophiecarmenjones Connect with The Theatre Podcast: Support the podcast on Patreon: Patreon.com/TheTheatrePodcast YouTube: YouTube.com/TheTheatrePodcast Threads, Twitter & Instagram: @theatre_podcast TikTok: @thetheatrepodcast Facebook.com/OfficialTheatrePodcast TheTheatrePodcast.com My personal Instagram: @alanseales Learn more about your ad choices. Diahann Carroll was born in the Bronx, New York, on July 17, 1935. When she was an infant, the family moved to Harlem, where she grew up. She attended Music & Art High School, along with schoolmate Billy Dee Williams. By the time Carroll was 15, she was modeling for Ebony magazine. After graduating from high school, Carroll attended New York University and eventually hit it big in Hollywood. Carroll starred in "Carmen Jones" in 1954 and "Porgy and Bess" in 1959. She was a trailblazer, who, in the 1960s, became one of the first Black women to star in a television series. In 1974, she became only the fourth Black actress to receive a Best Actress in a Leading Role nomination for "Claudine." Over a career that spanned five decades, Diahann Carroll broke barriers and opened doors for Black actors. Although we lost Carroll in 2019, at the age of 84, her legacy lives on. Synopsis On today's date in 1944, the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky completed an orchestral score he titled "Scenes de Ballet" or "Ballet Scenes." Now, considering Stravinsky had achieved international fame for his earlier ballet scores for "The Firebird," "Petroushka" and "The Rite of Spring," perhaps the generic title "Ballet Scenes" was not all that surprising. What was surprising was that the commission for this 1944 score came from an unusual source – Broadway. New York impresario and nightclub owner Billy Rose had achieved fame the previous year for his Broadway production of "Carmen Jones" – an updated American version of Bizet's opera "Carmen" with an all-black cast and a jazzed-up score. Rose decided to capitalize on this popular success with something more "upscale and highbrow." Rose conceived of a stage review titled "The Seven Lively Arts," and for the dance component decided to commission the most famous living composer of ballet scores, Igor Stravinsky, who was then living in Los Angeles. Rose liked the score when he heard it played on the piano, but he thought Stravinsky's orchestration a bit too far-out, and this led to a famous coast-to-coast telegraph exchange. After a preview performance in Philadelphia, Rose sent this telegram message to Stravinsky: "Great success, but could be sensational success if you would authorize Robert Russell Bennett to retouch orchestration." Stravinsky telegraphed this reply to Billy Rose: "Satisfied with great success." Book Vs. The story of a Romani woman who enchants the narrator by reading his fortune and behaving in a mysterious manner has been adapted several times, but for this episode, we focus on a 1954 all-African American cast filmed by director Otto Preminger.Based on the1943 Broadway musical by Oscar Hammerstein, Carmen Jones stars Harry Bellafonte, Dorothy Dandridge, and Pearl Bailey and it was a true passion project for the director as most studios would never risk a film that would not appeal during the era of massive Jim Crow laws. The character of Carmen was also criticized for being lustful and there were not enough “moral” voices. Preminger went so far as to send the script to Walter Francis White who was Executive Secretary for the NAACP who approved it. Dorothy Dandridge and Harry Belafonte became stars after the film's release which was a big hit a the box office. Dandridge became involved with Preminger and though she was the first African Americen woman to be nominated for Best Actress, her career had major ups and downs and she died under mysterious circumstances in 1965. Belafonte recently celebrated his 95th birthday. So, between the original novella and the 1954 musical adaptation--which did we prefer?
