It's not often that an artist gets to see almost a quarter of a century of their work in one space but in this episode Steve Lopes tells me what that feels like. The impressive survey exhibition 'Encountered', curated by Kon Gouriotis and now showing at the S.H.Ervin Gallery in Sydney, brings together 120 of Steve Lopes' works including over 80 paintings and drawings, sketchbooks, prints and collages. This is a must-see exhibition especially for those interested in figurative painting. In my previous interview with Steve, he expressed the view that to be successful, a painting requires a gritty element - a bit of 'poison'. When I visited the exhibition a couple of weeks ago, though, it wasn't only that grittiness that struck me but also the humanity evident in the works, not only in the figures but also in the environments they inhabit. Desolate wartime landscapes hinting at the loss of human life, a dog wandering across a suburban backlot, figures enigmatically positioned on a coastal landscape; these scenes exude an air of melancholy but often also a familiarity. Steve has exhibited in close to 40 solo shows across Australia and in London and Hong Kong. He has won the Gallipoli Art Prize, the Kings School Art Prize and has been shortlisted in many others. His work is held in the National Gallery of Australia, the Parliament House Collection, the State Library of NSW and many other public and private collections. We met at the S.H.Ervin gallery as the exhibition was being installed and we talked about a selection of works (pictured below), the story behind them as well as insights into his practice. The show continues at the S.H.Ervin Gallery until 8 May 2022 and will then travel to Orange Regional Gallery where it will run from 21 May. American Journalist, Victoria Gaither, talks with Tony Farmer president of the New Plymouth Model Railway Club about the club's history, why you should join and why trains are still relevant in today's world. Tony, a carpenter by trade says his love for trains started as a kid and runs in his family blood. On the club's Facebook page "We are a group of like-minded persons who have built an HO Model Railway layout in a once rundown farm building. The layout features our own railroad " Central Western" which uses the Fruit Salad scheme that still adorn some of the Kiwi Rail locomotives that currently operate on the New Zealand Railway system."

New releases galore; a sad farewell to the Railway Club; a preview of April In Paris; and much more!
The Railway's slow decline came to a precipitous drop this week as it shut it doors forever. Too bad. Lots of memories there. I'll miss it.CiTR interns Megan & Keaton sat in and both picked a song. They have good taste. Plenty of great live music this weekend. Go see a show!
This week 's topics included: Andy M Stewart's health, Eliza Carthy's MBE, the impending sale of Vancouver's iconic Railway Club, Alex Cuba's Grammy nomination, some Rogue previews, and new releases from fRoots magazine, The Wainwright Sisters, Celtic Colours Live 2015 CD, Van Django's Cool Yule gypsy jazz Xmas CD, and Irish supergroup The Rambling Boys
From the ashes of another band came the unexpected, but very welcome, creation of The Railway Club. The four-piece – had all been playing in different bands but knew each other from the local music scene. Gradually, they decided they wanted to perform together and The Railway Club was born in 2011.
Episode ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY ONE! IS DONE! No such thing as short and sweet at The Wigglian Way. Unless we are talking about Sparrow, but we are not. This episode is full of fun. Two hours, two minutes, and 21 seconds of Wigglian funtasticness! Sable Aradia dropped by the studio to share a little about her friend Heather Carr. There were a lot of incorrect media reports out there and Sable shares what she feels actually happened. Hail and Farewell Heather! Mojo got to almost faint...I mean "interview" SJ Tucker about her new album, Stolen Season, which just happens to be our feature album for this show. The two of them discussed the album song by song. That is one of my favourite types of interview to listen to. It's interesting to get a glimps of the process. From Sooj's album, Stolen Season we hear Black Swan Blues, Believe in Lullabies (After Hours) and to end the episode, Stolen Season. We had to have a "Mini Feature Album" for this episode because Damh the Bard just released his new album, Sabbat. From Sabbat, we hear Iron from Stone and The Wicker Man. Last, but not least, I had the honour of interviewing Lon Milo Duquette. Lon is going to be visiting Vancouver for the 100th birthday of the Masons being in Vancouver. Lon will be playing a concert May 15th at The Railway Club. On Monday, May 18th, he will be teaching three workshops at LON-A-THON. Thank you to all our guests and musicians for being on the show. Thank you, for spending some of your time with us. We appreciate you all. It's all about the Love.
A lovely show tonight, starting with a phone chat to Malcolm Holcombe. He was kind enough to phone in live from several time zones away, so forgive him if he sounds a bit weary. Do see him Aug. 19 at the Railway Club here in Vancouver. Tonight's live session was with local actor/musician/activist Scott Perrie. He celebrates his new ep with a show Aug. 16 at the Backstage Lounge. Some welcome rain has arrived here in Metro Vancouver - time to hunker down inside and check out some live music! Thanks as always for listening, and hope you'll tune in next week.cheers, valfolkoasis@gmail.com
