IN MEMORIAM: REBEKAH DEL RIO 1967-2025 On June 25th, Rebekah Del Rio passed away. You might not know the name right away, but if you've seen Mulholland Drive or Twin Peaks: The Return on Showtime, you've definitely heard her voice. It's haunting, unforgettable. I met Rebekah back in 2020 at the Fayetteville Comic Show during a Twin Peaks reunion, which is part of the panel you're about to hear. She was all over social media at the time. I actually first saw her at the airport, livestreaming to her followers on this jewel-covered phone. She had such a big, lively presence—exactly what you'll hear in the panel. She had some health issues, but 57 is still way too young. So this is just our small way of honoring her—sharing a bit of that Twin Peaks reunion panel from 2020 and remembering the spark she brought with her wherever she went.

Her appearance in Mulholland Drive, during which she sang the Roy Orbison cover ìLlorandoî in the Silencio club scene, was arguably one of the most memorable moments of the movie. Needless to say, we canít wait to see her in the new Twin Peaks season. As usual in our show, we asked Rebekah to pick fifteen of her favorite songs. This is my number one favorite song. I loved it in its original form written and sung by Roy Orbison but like Barbara Orbison told me once, my version felt like it was written in Spanish first 'then' translated into English. This hauntingly beautiful song is the single most number one reason why my career exists! I started singing ìCryingî a capella in 1993 and decided it would be really original to do it in Spanish. I met a woman who is a great songwriter for Spanish songs and asked her to translate it for me. I then finessed it into the song it became. I started singing this version around Los Angeles and I got a major management deal and then a record deal in Nashville. While I was finishing up my Country record, my CAA agent, Brian Loucks introduced me to David Lynch. I sang my ìLlorandoî and he recorded it unbeknownst to me and thus birthed club Silencio in Mulholland Drive and every other amazing opportunity that has come my way. Including Carnegie Hall with Sting, Sir Elton John, Nina Simone, a gold record with Il Divo, performance with the Royal Philharmonic, standing ovation after standing ovation… You see why this is my favorite song? It is the song that represents me the mostÖ my pain… my triumphsÖ my life.ìWhat Are You Doing the Rest of Your Lifeî by Dusty Springfield. Such a beautiful composition, words and melody, so complicated yet so simpleÖ like love, no?ìJe suis maladeî by Lara Fabian. I heard this song for 4 months straight during a show I did in San Francisco in 2011. The words are as powerful as Llorando and just as tragic… do you wonder why I love this song?ìCorcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)î by Astrud Gilberto. All of Jobim's songs are amazing. I could listen to Astrud foreverÖ such a sweet voice… and lonelyÖìWichita Linemanî by Glen Campbell. Classic Country 70's song that tears my heart out… it's just beautiful! Reminds me of my childhood growing up with a Texan mother always listening to classic country. This is my soul.ìLove on the Brainî by Rihanna. This song really reminds me of a David Lynch song… I can relate to this song very much.ìVentura Highwayî by America. This is my happy place song. It reminds me of my late son Phillip. We used to put our harms out of the car and make waves in the wind with our handsÖ pure joy.ìHallelujahî by Jeff Buckley. This song was played at my son's funeral and when I laid his ashes down in Victoria at mile Zero…ìCoat of Many Colorsî by Dolly Parton. This song reminds me of my childhood. I was very poor and could relate to this song at the time… Flash forward 34 years later: refugees made me a coat of many colors in Australia for my performances there. Each lament I sang, they added a layer until I had a long hooded cape. Sooo beautifulÖ my coat of many colorsÖìOoh Baby Babyî by Linda Ronstadt. Linda Ronstadt was my vocal teacherÖ via vinyl records. When I was growing up, we didn't have money for extravagances like albums but my older brother bought me a used Linda Ronstadt album and I practiced every day to sound like my idol. Years later, I perform at Carnegie Hall with the original writer/performer of this amazing song, Mr. Smokey Robinson.ìNatural Highî by Bloodstone. I love this era of music! Cool and Sexy! Jackie Brown baby!!!ìYou Have Been Lovedî by Sia. This song is so true… I have been loved and have loved ó to my hearts annihilation.ìGloomy Sundayî by Billy Holiday. Although I prefer the original singer from the motion picture, this Hungarian suicide song is nothing short of tragic… sorrow at its deepest level.ìGoodbye to Loveî by Karen Carpenter. Growing up I idolized Karen Carpenter and of all of her many happy songs I love, this song is the one that strikes my heartstrings the most. ìI'll say goodbye to loveÖ no one ever cared if I should live or die…î I know how she feels.ìThankfulî by Rumer. This new artist from the UK is Dusty and Karen wrapped up in one. This song reminds me of my beloved son, Phillip C. DeMars, who said to me ìalways say thank you and I love you… especially to yourself… the G-d withinî.

Listen to our interview with Celeste Kim, whom you may also know from local L.A. Powerpop/Punk band Underwater City People, and her Producers Nathan Jenkins and Taylor Martyr (both of Action Go Now). With a new EP that debuted January 15th, Kim is ready to make her mark in this new world of music that she has always been a fan of and she joins us in studio to discuss her shiny super-new project Sparkalize!  Tracks by Jeff the Brotherhood ("Bone Jam"),Lykke Li, Foster the People ("Pumped Up Kicks), Cloud Control ("Ghost Story"), and The Bees ("Winter Rose") were played during this episode as well as "Lucky Charm," "Belong", "Romance Not War," and "Party Girl" (Title Track) all tracks from the Sparkalize Party Girl EP. Here is a little more information on this new project: Sparkalize is a new electro-pop project via singer/songwriter Celeste Kim. Emerging from the Kiss or Kill LA underground rock and roll scene with indie pop punk band Underwater City People, she returns to her first crush: dance music. As a minor, getting into dance clubs and raves by way of fake id’s, tons of makeup, and stilleto heels helped her get her fix. The intoxication of the bass on the floor and the floating synths has had her hooked ever since. Sparkalize is her love affair.Celeste has toured as keyboardist and as a back up singer with major artists such as Savage Garden, Coolio, and Rebekah Del Rio performing on stages all over the world, as well as on the Tonight show.Recently she sang and played bass with 3 piece indie punk/rock group Underwater City People which allowed her to tour the US, gain national exposure on prime time TV shows and win an award for 'Best Pop Single' at the LA Music Awards. Now, longing to focus on her love of dance music, Celeste has teamed up with producers Nathan Jenkins and Taylor Martyr (Action Go Now) and Jonathan Paul (redCola, Obtain) to record her debut solo EP “Sparkalize.”
