And, the actual range of potential ‘IVs' that can do so extends well beyond race and sex to include: age, the regions where people and groups live, test and IQ scores, patterns of study time, crime rates, desire to work at all (in the context of men vs. women), and so on down the line.” You can find the full editorial here: https://www.nationalreview.com/2024/01/the-intersectionality-canard/. R., Ballard, C., Lee, J.-Y., Kim, Y. K., Velayudhan, L., Bhattacharyya, S. Abstract: Background: Common neural underpinning of Parkinson's Disease (PD) psychosis across different structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies remains unclear to this day with few studies and even fewer meta-analyses available. Objectives: Our meta-analysis aimed to identify and summarise studies using MRI approach to identify PD psychosis-specific brain regions and examine the relation between cortical volume loss and dopaminergic and serotonergic receptor density. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science and Embase were searched for MRI studies of PD psychosis (PDP) compared to PD patients without psychosis (PDnP). Seed-based d Mapping with Permutation of Subject Images was applied in the meta-analysis where coordinates were available. Multiple linear regressions to examine the relationship between grey matter volume loss in PDP and receptor gene expression density (extracted from the Allen Human Brain Atlas) were conducted in R. Results: We observed lower grey matter volume in parietal-temporo-occipital regions from our meta-analysis (N studies =10, PDP n=211, PDnP, n=298). These results remained significant after adjusting for PD medications and for cognitive scores. Grey matter volume loss in PDP was associated with local expression of 5-HT1a (b=0.109, p=0.012) and 5-HT2a receptors (b=-0.106, p=0.002) also after adjusting for PD medications (5-HT1a, p = 0.005; 5-HT2a, p = 0.001). Conclusions: Widespread cortical volume loss in the parieto-temporo-occipital regions involved in information processing and integration, as well as attention, could result in PD psychosis symptoms. Neurobiological mechanisms implicating serotonergic receptors may also contribute to this condition. Copy rights belong to original authors. You may have heard me say there is no magic formula for value pricing. That's true. There isn't.Value pricing is without a doubt the best way to price your services – but it takes time to implement, especially when you're stuck up on using hourly rates. But, we CAN break it down into baby steps. And the first step towards value pricing is to give a fixed price up front. Now for that… there IS a magic formula. It's called Regression Analysis. It's a way of using your current time-based pricing model to generate a fixed price upfront that will ensure you a profit every time.  All you need is a spreadsheet.Ready to get started? The latest episode of the Value Pricing Podcast is now available: Calculating a Pricing Formula Using Regression Analysis In today's episode you will learn:  ✅ Why value pricing is hard (but the best pricing method out there)✅ How to systematically calculate a profitable fixed price every time✅ How to systematically adjust your prices to cover scope ✅ How to make the first step towards value pricing Once you can confidently generate a fixed price up front, value pricing becomes FAR easier. Fixed pricing is not value pricing, but it's the first step on the journey towards it.

In our first technically-focused episode, co-hosts Ron Landis and Jennifer Miller deconstruct a common statistical technique called linear regression. They focus on how regression can be used to better understand the relations between key drivers of important outcomes. In this episode, they had conversations around these questions:  What is linear regression?  How are regression analyses used in organizational contexts?  How can linear regression be used to drive optimal business decisions? What are some steps an organization can take to more effectively utilize linear regression models?  Key Takeaways:  Linear Regression is a technique used to model relations between variables of interest and to use these relations to forecast future states. For example, in a simple linear regression, we might be interested in predicting a key outcome variable such as sales from other predictor variables such as number of customers. This kind of statistical technique can be used when the underlying relation between the predictor and outcome is linear (I.e., when the predictor and outcome is plotted, it follows a relatively straight line).  At the end of the episode, Jennifer and Ron recommend steps for folks just starting out in this space all the way to the more advanced HR professional.  Related Links  Millan Chicago

Fakultät für Mathematik, Informatik und Statistik - Digitale Hochschulschriften der LMU - Teil 02/02

Statistical methods usually require that the analyzed data are correct and precise observations of the variables of interest. In practice, however, often only incomplete or uncertain information about the quantities of interest is available. The question studied in the present thesis is, how a regression analysis can reasonably be performed when the variables are only imprecisely observed. At first, different approaches to analyzing imprecisely observed variables that were proposed in the Statistics literature are discussed. Then, a new likelihood-based methodology for regression analysis with imprecise data called Likelihood-based Imprecise Regression is introduced. The corresponding methodological framework is very broad and permits accounting for coarsening errors, in contrast to most alternative approaches to analyzing imprecise data. The methodology suggests considering as the result of a regression analysis the entire set of all regression functions that cannot be excluded in the light of the data, which can be interpreted as a confidence set. In the subsequent chapter, a very general regression method is derived from the likelihood-based methodology. This regression method does not impose restrictive assumptions about the form of the imprecise observations, about the underlying probability distribution, and about the shape of the relationship between the variables. Moreover, an exact algorithm is developed for the special case of simple linear regression with interval data and selected statistical properties of this regression method are studied. The proposed regression method turns out to be robust in terms of a high breakdown point and to provide very reliable insights in the sense of a set-valued result with a high coverage probability. In addition, an alternative approach proposed in the literature based on Support Vector Regression is studied in detail and generalized by embedding it into the framework of the formerly introduced likelihood-based methodology. In the end, the discussed regression methods are applied to two practical questions.

Sample- and segment-size specific Model Selection in Mixture Regression Analysis

As mixture regression models increasingly receive attention from both theory and practice, the question of selecting the correct number of segments gains urgency. A misspecification can lead to an under- or oversegmentation, thus resulting in flawed management decisions on customer targeting or product positioning. This paper presents the results of an extensive simulation study that examines the performance of commonly used information criteria in a mixture regression context with normal data. Unlike with previous studies, the performance is evaluated at a broad range of sample/segment size combinations being the most critical factors for the effectiveness of the criteria from both a theoretical and practical point of view. In order to assess the absolute performance of each criterion with respect to chance, the performance is reviewed against so called chance criteria, derived from discriminant analysis. The results induce recommendations on criterion selection when a certain sample size is given and help to judge what sample size is needed in order to guarantee an accurate decision based on a certain criterion respectively.

We present a unified semiparametric Bayesian approach based on Markov random field priors for analyzing the dependence of multicategorical response variables on time, space and further covariates. The general model extends dynamic, or state space, models for categorical time series and longitudinal data by including spatial effects as well as nonlinear effects of metrical covariates in flexible semiparametric form. Trend and seasonal components, different types of covariates and spatial effects are all treated within the same general framework by assigning appropriate priors with different forms and degrees of smoothness. Inference is fully Bayesian and uses MCMC techniques for posterior analysis. We provide two approaches: The first one is based on direct evaluation of observation likelihoods. The second one is based on latent semiparametric utility models and is particularly useful for probit models. The methods are illustrated by applications to unemployment data and a forest damage survey.

Regression Analysis for Forest Inventory Data with Time and Space Dependencies

In this paper the data of a forest health inventory are analysed. Since 1983 the degree of defoliation (damage), together with various explanatory variables (covariates) concerning stand, site, soil and weather, are recorded by the second of the two authors, in the forest district Rothenbuch (Spessart, Bavaria). The focus is on the space and time dependencies of the data. The mutual relationship of space-time functions on the one side and the set of covariates on the other is worked out. To this end we employ generalized linear models (GLMs) for ordinal response variables and employ semiparametric estimation approaches and appropriate residual methods. It turns out that (i) the contribution of space-time functions is quantitatively comparable with that of the set of covariates, (ii) the data contain much more (timely and spatially) sequential structure than smooth space-time structure, (iii) a fine analysis of the individual sites in the area can be carried out with respect to predictive power of the covariates.

Regression analysis of forest damage by marginal models for correlated ordinal responses

Mathematik, Informatik und Statistik - Open Access LMU - Teil 01/03

Studies on forest damage can generally not be carried out by common regression models, mainly for two reasons: Firstly, the response variable, damage state of trees, is usually observed in ordered categories. Secondly, responses are often correlated, either serially, as in a longitudinal study, or spatially, as in the application of this paper, where neighborhood interactions exist between damage states of spruces determined from aerial pictures. Thus so-called marginal regression models for ordinal responses, taking into account dependence among observations, are appropriate for correct inference. To this end we extend the binary models of Liang and Zeger (1986) and develop an ordinal GEE1 model, based on parametrizing association by global cross-ratios. The methods are applied to data from a survey conducted in Southern Germany. Due to the survey design, responses must be assumed to be spatially correlated. The results show that the proposed ordinal marginal regression models provide appropriate tools for analyzing the influence of covariates, that characterize the stand, on the damage state of spruce.
