Artificial intelligence and machine learning are two much-heralded technologies set to revolutionise signals intelligence collection, processing and dissemination. An increasingly congested radio spectrum is set to challenge the limits of human cognition in the search for the signal of interest. In this episode of Radioflash! we catch up with Patrick ‘Krown' Killingsworth, EpiSci's  director of autonomy projects. We define the terms Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) and their unique capabilities. ML algorithms are trained on huge amounts of data which makes these algorithms great for processing huge amounts of data, a key requirement in Signals Intelligence (SIGINT). The application of AI and ML in SIGINT is not necessarily about replacing the human but helping the SIGINT operator sort these data. Nonetheless, the continuing introduction of AI and ML into SIGINT analysis prompts concern and enthusiasm in equal measure. Ensuring that enough data are available for training algorithms creates challenges given the paucity of data which the SIGINT cadre may be interested in. We talk about the risks of using synthetic data for training and tackling the risk by anticipating potential problems from the start. AI- and ML-enabled SIGINT systems continue to get smarter, faster and more accurate. The future brings challenges in terms of moving this SIGINT technology from the strategic level to the tactical edge, although edge computing in the tactical domain should help no end in this regard.

Art Markman is the Annabel Irion Worsham Centennial Professor of Psychology and Marketing at the University of Texas at Austin. Prof. Markman is the Founding Director of the Human Dimensions of Organizations program in the College of Liberal Arts at UT, former Executive Director of the IC² Institute, and he is currently the Vice Provost for Continuing and Professional Education and New Education Ventures at the University of Texas at Austin. Prof. Markman is a frequent contributor to Psychology Today, Fast Company and the Harvard Business Review. He has published more than 150 scholarly works about cognitive science, decision-making and organizational behavior. Dr. Markman has also written several books for general audiences including: Smart Thinking, Smart Change, Bring Your Brain to Work, and Brain Briefs (co-written with Dr. Bob Duke). Beyond the UT Austin campus, he is probably best known as the co-host of KUT's “Two Guys on Your Head” radio show and podcast, where he and Butler School of Music professor Bob Duke explore the human mind with a unique mix of research, humor and everyday relevance. As a tornado went through Kentucky, a grandmother of a 15-month-old and 3-month-old saved her grandbabies' lives by putting them in the bathtub for safety.  She laid her two grandchildren in the bathtub with blankets, pillows, and a bible. She prayed over them as rumbling from the tornado shook her house. The tornado was so close, it actually tore her house apart and lifted the babies out with it.  Miraculously, the two babies landed back on the ground with the bathtub over their heads. The pillows and blankets protected them and they were left completely unharmed.  Grandma's smart thinking saved their lives.  Read more about the story here.

Richard E. Nisbett has spent his career studying how people think. He is an emeritus professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan, and his research has influenced how psychologists think about reasoning, introspection, culture, and intelligence. What started out as a creative writing programme for young prisoners at Auckland's Mt Eden Corrections Facility is now spreading around the country's prisons. It's down to the hard work of the young writers behind Youth Arts New Zealand, a charity set up in 2017. The volunteers designed a creative writing programme, Te Kahui, for rangatahi in Mt Eden. A Creative New Zealand grant means they are now able to expand the programme through distributing specially designed exercise booklets. Lynn talks to two of the key players, Zak Devey (21) and poet Eric Soakai (23) who started an on-site creative writing workshop a year ago, before having to think laterally once the pandemic struck.

What are the 3 aspects of making your goals more specific?There are 3 aspects of making your goals more specific:1. Action- Think about actions you can take2. Obstacles- you must overcome. There are many obstacles to success.a. Positive thinking alone will not successfully change behavior3. Signs- How you will know you're finisheda. Define all your goals in ways that have specific markers of successGoals- allow yourself the flexibility to change them. We often set unrealistic expectations for the achievement we make on the road toward making a contribution.Why is our brain designed to spend as little time thinking as possible?1. Brains are very expensive to operate. It uses 20 - 25% of the calories you burn each day and requires a lot of oxygen and blood flow to keep in running.2. The brain requires about the same amount of energy no matter what is is doing.3. Your brain wants to minimize the amount of time you spend thinking about anything to make sure the energy cost of thinking does not exceed the value of what you are thinking about.How does the arousal of a goal influence your performance?The relationship between the arousal of a goal and the performance on that goal looks like an up side-down U, the Yerkes-Dodson curve.1. Low levels of arousal - you don't put in much effort to achieve the goal.2. Middle levels of arousal - there is a sweet spot where you're able to focus on the goal and get a lot accomplished.3. High levels of arousal - you have so much energy that you have difficulty staying focused on the goal (panic).How can you determine if you are a high-arousal or low-arousal person?* There are naturally high-arousal and low-arousal people.* High arousal people - easily excited by new ideas and don't need a lot of prodding to get started. Guest Introduction: Dr. Art Markman is a cognitive scientist, author, and blogger. He is a professor of Psychology and Marketing at the University of Texas at Austin, and is the Founding Director of the Human Dimensions of Organizations. Art is the co-host of the public radio podcast, “Two Guys on Your Head” for KUT Radio in Austin. He has also authored/co-authored several books, including "Smart Thinking," "Smart Change," and "Habits of Leadership." Interview Summary: In this interview, Art begins by talking about the two components of the motivational system. He explains why the go system is much more efficient than the stop system, and offers strategies to leverage the go system and increase our chances of achieving our goals. Art also describes how this process works in the brain, and how the functions of the outer and inner brain structures differ. He goes on to discuss why mindfulness helps us overcome rumination. Next, Art walks us through the process of reprogramming our brains and developing new habits. Chris talks about how our habits become anchored to relationships.
