Venture Capital's shift from consumer fintech to infrastructure ft. Ryan Falvey

In today's financial landscape, innovation is more than just a buzzword—it's a driving force separating industry leaders from those left behind. Finding, nurturing, and scaling the right technologies has become a specialized skill set all its own. Joining us today is Ryan Falvey, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Restive. Ryan has spent the last 15 years at the forefront of identifying and championing market-changing innovations in financial technology. His track record speaks for itself—since 2015, he's invested in 40 early-stage fintech firms that have collectively grown to represent approximately $3 billion in aggregate equity value. Before founding Restive, Ryan led the development of the Financial Solutions Lab, a groundbreaking partnership between JPMorgan Chase and the Financial Health Network. His experience also includes developing payment solutions with leading tech companies at Silicon Valley Bank and serving as Strategy Group Lead at Enclude Solutions, where he oversaw global strategy consulting for mobile-enabled financial products. “We're not investing in fintech apps — we're investing in infrastructure,” Falvey explains early on. That distinction underscores a larger trend he sees in the market: a move away from flashy consumer-based apps toward foundational financial APIs. It also focuses on backend tooling and embedded finance capabilities. Falvey's insights aren't theoretical — they're rooted in his day-to-day decisions as an investor. At Restive, he's helping startups through early product development. He emphasizes practical scalability and regulation-ready business models. “You don't build a consumer business by launching an app anymore,” he says. “It's not about the app — it's about access, context, and integration.” From fintech regulation to platform economics, Falvey shares grounded wisdom. He focuses on how successful startups are navigating today's uncertain investment landscape. What's emerging is a more nuanced strategy for funding — one that prioritizes durability over disruption.

Becoming a fintech is no easy task. There's the foundational idea, there's the team, the market opportunity, macroeconomic conditions, and the necessary skills of running a business. Never easy and today it's even tougher for new fintechs given rising interest rates, consumer hesitation, and the uncertain global economy.  There's also the make-or-break concern of regulatory compliance.  In this Payments on Fire® episode, Cameron Peake, partner at VC firm Restive Ventures (recently renamed from Financial Venture Studio) joins Glenbrook's Yvette Bohanan and George Peabody in a discussion on the regulatory and contractual issues fintechs face.  Cameron's firm takes a hands-on approach in helping their fintech investments navigate those complexities. And in these conditions, a guiding hand has to be a welcome value-add for a fintech looking for a VC partner. Smart money is always better than the clueless variety. https://pof.glenbrook.com/

Reaction everywhere is mixed; there has been violent social upheaval in Chile, muted protest amidst populist upheaval in Brazil, grave economic worry in Argentina, stymied reform in Colombia, government by prosecution and shutdown in Peru, creeping authoritarianism in Mexico, and increasing influence by militaries on regimes across the region. These developments occur amidst increasing great power interest in the region. While the drought continues to hit the Nationals’ constituents hard, the party faces a testing terrain on a political level. In this episode of Politics with Michelle Grattan, Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack acknowledges the mishandling of the bring-forward of the dairy code, which will increase the negotiating power of milk producers. Tensions blew up in the Nationals party room this week after Pauline Hanson managed last week to win an acceleration of the code. The deal was all about the government wanting Hanson’s Senate co-operation. But agriculture minister Bridget McKenzie had previously told Nationals who have been fighting for the code that it couldn’t be finalised until well into next year. McCormack also shared his willingness to consider a proposal from the drought policy released by the National Farmers’ Federation for exit assistance for drought-striken farmers who sell. But he had a cautionary message for those deciding whether to stay or leave, saying “they absolutely need to make sure they don’t self-assess. They need to absolutely make sure that they consult their families foremost, that they talk to rural financial counsellors, they talk to their accountants, their banks. They take every bit of good advice available before they take that ultimate step”. Additional audio: A List of Ways to Die, Lee Rosevere, from Free Music Archive. Image: AAP/ Mick Tsikas
