Soteriology 101: Former Calvinistic Professor discusses Doctrines of Salvation
Warren McGrew joins me again to respond to another really bad argument by a rogue Calvinist. We will specifically address the Calvinistic interpretation of Romans 8:7-9 as it relates to the "ordo salutis" (logical order of events in salvation) from the Reformed/Calvinistic perspective, which is based on logic that goes something like this: 1. If you're in the flesh you cannot please God 2. Believing in Christ would please God 3. Therefore, you cannot believe in Jesus because that would please God Which is a non-sequitur. This example makes the fallacy very clear: 1. If you're playing in mud you cannot please mom. 2. Leaving the mud and cleaning up would please mom. 3. Therefore, you cannot leave the mud and clean up because that would please mom. The Calvinist comes to the text with presumptions that simply are not supported by this text, or any other. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for August 26, 2024 is: fallacious fuh-LAY-shus adjective Fallacious is a formal word that typically describes something, such as an argument or assumption, that is false or inaccurate and that tends to mislead or deceive others. // The notion that disease is caused by malign spirits was known to be fallacious long before the advent of germ theory. See the entry > Examples: "Bad legislation and fallacious arguments are threatening our most renowned educational institutions, which have made major contributions to our understanding of science and society and to our health and economic well-being, institutions that are the envy of the world." — Burton G. Malkiel, The Wall Street Journal, 19 Oct. 2022 Did you know? It will come as no surprise that fallacious is related to the noun fallacy, meaning “delusion” or “falsehood.” Both words come from the Latin word fallacia, which in turn comes from fallere, meaning “to deceive.” (Other descendants of fallere in English include fail, false, and fault.) Fallacious arguments are a hot topic among philosophers, and some classic examples include the “ad hominem” fallacy, the “slippery slope” fallacy, and the “red herring” fallacy.

This week apologetics expert, Sandy Simpson, gives us two more teachings concerning false doctrines within the church.
We are often told that schools are where you learn how to think, not what to think. Sadly, almost no school curriculum deals directly with logic and the closely related subject of logical fallacies. Fallacies are all around us. Just read something online or watch a few minutes of television and you'll probably encounter examples of people using fallacious reasoning and logical fallacies. In fact, you've probably engaged in it yourself. We're all guilty of it. Learn more about some of the common logical fallacies on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. This week's episode contains two teachings from Sandy Simpson. The first is, “The Fallacious Arguments of Neo-Universalists” is from a DVD Sandy produced in the early to mid-2000's. In it, he discusses some of the beliefs from the Emerging. Some of the leaders of the Emerging church are Brian McLaren, Leonard Sweet, Rick Warren, Tony Campolo, and even Billy Graham. The second teaching in this episode is from an article Sandy wrote in 2005 called, “The Fallacies of the Third Wave Spiritual Warfare Teachings”. Sandy discusses the book, “Portals to Cleansing” by Dr. Henry Malone and why it's in error compared to the Scriptures. The article Sandy mentions can be found on his website: DeceptionInTheChurch.com.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: “Pivotal Act” Intentions: Negative Consequences and Fallacious Arguments, published by Andrew Critch on April 19, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. tl;dr: I know a bunch of EA/rationality-adjacent people who argue — sometimes jokingly and sometimes seriously — that the only way or best way to reduce existential risk is to enable an “aligned” AGI development team to forcibly (even if nonviolently) shut down all other AGI projects, using safe AGI. I find that the arguments for this conclusion are flawed, and that the conclusion itself causes harm to institutions who espouse it. Fortunately (according to me), successful AI labs do not seem to espouse this "pivotal act" philosophy. [This post is also available on LessWrong.] How to read this post Please read Part 1 first if you're very impact-oriented and want to think about the consequences of various institutional policies more than the arguments that lead to the policies; then Parts 2 and 3. Please read Part 2 first if you mostly want to evaluate policies based on the arguments behind them; then Parts 1 and 3. I think all parts of this post are worth reading, but depending on who you are, I think you could be quite put off if you read the wrong part first and start feeling like I'm basing my argument too much on kinds-of-thinking that policy arguments should not be based on. Part 1: Negative Consequences of Pivotal Act Intentions Imagine it's 2022 (it is!), and your plan for reducing existential risk is to build or maintain an institution that aims to find a way for you — or someone else you'll later identify and ally with — to use AGI to forcibly shut down all other AGI projects in the world. By “forcibly” I mean methods that violate or threaten to violate private property or public communication norms, such as by using an AGI to engage in. cyber sabotage: hacking into competitors' computer systems and destroy their data; physical sabotage: deploying tiny robotic systems that locate and destroy AI-critical hardware without (directly) harming any humans; social sabotage: auto-generating mass media campaigns to shut down competitor companies by legal means, or threats: demonstrating powerful cyber or physical or social threats, and bargaining with competitors to shut down “or else”. Hiring people for your pivotal act project is going to be tricky. You're going to need people who are willing to take on, or at least tolerate, a highly adversarial stance toward the rest of the world. I think this is very likely to have a number of bad consequences for your plan to do good, including the following: (bad external relations) People on your team will have a low trust and/or adversarial stance towards neighboring institutions and collaborators, and will have a hard time forming good-faith collaboration. This will alienate other institutions and make them not want to work with you or be supportive of you. (bad internal relations) As your team grows, not everyone will know each other very well. The “us against the world” attitude will be hard to maintain, because there will be an ever weakening sense of “us”, especially as people quit and move to other institutions and conversely. Sometimes, new hires will express opinions that differ from the dominant institutional narrative, which might pattern-match as “outsidery” or “norm-y” or “too caught up in external politics”, triggering feelings of internal distrust within the team that some people might defect on the plan to forcibly shut down other projects. This will cause your team to get along poorly internally, and make it hard to manage people. (risky behavior) In the fortunate-according-to-you event that your team manages to someday wield a powerful technology, there will be a sense of pressure to use it to “finally make a difference” or other argument that boils down to ac...

Have you been taught about different spirits that are not apparent in Scripture? Have you been plagued with the thought that you may have a religious spirit, an orphan spirit, or even a Jezebel spirit? I find it interesting now that all of this talk of demonic indwelling, demonology, and erroneous spirits operating in people is not said of the world necessarily, but it is said to Christians concerning fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. I began to notice a few years ago while reading the Bible that I could not find some of these spirits mentioned though dozens of books can be purchased that are dedicated to extrabiblical knowledge concerning them. There are entire doctrines being built upon the presence of these spirits. Rather than going on personal experience, we should be asking if this is Biblical or if people are being led off into myths. Join me today as we look at some of these teachings and test them against Scripture. There is great freedom found in the Word of God! There is a growing theme, specifically among those who are seeking to justify their reconciliation of their political persuasions that support a political ideology and the genocidal reality of abortion, by claiming that pro-life needs to comprehensively include all aspects of life. On the surface, caring for all life “from womb to tomb” sounds right and noble. And it is. But caring for life from womb to tomb can't even be a thought if life itself is terminated within the womb. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/shawn-barnard/support

We are often told that schools are where you learn how to think, not what to think. Sadly, almost no school curriculum deals directly with logic and the closely related subject of logical fallacies. Fallacies are all around us. Just read something online or watch a few minutes of television and you’ll probably encounter examples of people using fallacious reasoning and logical fallacies. In fact, you’ve probably engaged in it yourself. We’re all guilty of it. Learn more about some of the common logical fallacies on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily. http://www.audibletrial.com/EverythingEverywhere -------------------------------- Executive Producer James Makkyla Become a supporter on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/everythingeverywhere Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/everythingeverywhere/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/everywheretrip Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/EEDailyPodcast/ Website: https://everything-everywhere.com/everything-everywhere-daily-podcast/

In this episode, Virgil goes over the concept of logical fallacies and the different types used in discourse. Logical fallacies work on people because they make messages feel more persuasive. Ultimately fallacies hurt the trust and credibility of a person making an argument; therefore, the truth isn't the focus. This episode focuses on what logical fallacies are, the negative aspects of using them, and their overall effect on the way we interact with others.

Episode 7 - The Question of Shakespeare Authorship We've all studied Shakespeare. You read him in school. You performed a soliloquy in drama class. You've watched all the bad coming of age teen remakes. Did you know, though, that Shakespeare didn't actually write any of his works? At least, that's the theory, and we discuss the historical thought of the day that inspired this hotly debated and contemptuous accusation. We also explore an area of pursuasive argument known as the Argument of Authority, that just might explain why people today continue to jump on the band wagon of Shakespeare "doubters" whether they have a literary background or not. www.conspiracytheoryology.com email - contact@conspiracytheoryology.com Twitter - @TheoryologyPod Facebook - @TheoryologyPodcast Music is by adamhenrygarcia.bandcamp.com Links: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakespeare_authorship_question http://realunexplainedmysteries.com/the-william-shakespeare-conspiracy-theory https://www.doubtaboutwill.org/declaration http://ourfakehistory.com/index.php/season-1/episode-5-did-shakespeare-write-the-plays/#more-131 https://www.telegraph.co.uk/theatre/playwrights/shakespeare-the-conspiracy-theories/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argument_from_authority#Fallacious_appeal_to_authority https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declaration_of_Reasonable_Doubt https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argumentum_ad_populum https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historical_criticism https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delia_Bacon
Sunday, June 24, 2018 - Apostle Donnie Clark expounds on the awry use of tolerance and the Kingdom mandate to appropriate it correctly
How to address afflictions One is to seek a tranquil mind, not a confined mind. On the pursuit of a tranquil mind, some find that the more they do, the more confined their minds become as they only enjoy solitude. Such tranquility is rather superficial and fallacious. Superficial speaks to the narrow-minded nature as one is incapable of dealing with more people and taking more responsibilities. Fallacious speaks to the deceptive nature as it is not that one truly addresses afflictions, it is the lack of external conditions causing afflictions.
In this episode, I explain the logical fallacies and misinformation used in social media, and how we can determine how to counter it.
Kinsella on Liberty Podcast, Episode 237. At Libertopia 2012, I delivered a 45-minute talk , "Intellectual Nonsense: Fallacious Arguments for IP," the slides for which are below. I spoke for 45 minutes—well, 40, then the last 5 were taken up by a question from J. Neil Schulman—but only covered the first 25 slides. For more details, see Part 1, at KOL236 | Intellectual Nonsense: Fallacious Arguments for IP (Libertopia 2012). Youtube, Slides, and Transcript below. This podcast is Part 2, covering most of the remaining 41 issues, some of which are noted below. ❧ Topics discussed: IP by Contract It's in the Constitution! It's Thursday, October 18. I intend this to be part two, or the conclusion of my Libertopia lecture. In Libertopia, I gave a talk, about a 45-minute talk on – well, it would have been 45 minutes. It was about 40 minutes because there was a question at the end by Neil Schulman the last five minutes. Anyway, the talk was on Intellectual Nonsense: Fallacious Arguments for Intellectual Property, or IP, and I had about 65 or 6 slides prepared of notes for myself of topics to discuss. I got to about slide 25, so there's several topics left to discuss. I thought what I would do is just go through those slides now, so I've already put the slides up on my website, c4sif.org, and you can view them there, download them, look them in Google Docs, etc. The – and there are several hyperlinks embedded in there. 00:01:08 So the next topic I wanted to talk about is the common argument you hear quite often, which is that we could form intellectual property by contract or that intellectual property like patent and copyright are justified as a type of breach of contract. And I am on slide 26 of my set of slides right now, by the way. The title is “IP by Contract.” So the basic argument, which I've addressed already, by the way, in my long IP article from 2001 in the reference given there. The basic argument is that imagine that imagine that you sell a book to someone or you sell a ticket to a movie to a customer. 00:01:55 And you put on there some fine print or you make someone even sign a contract saying I promise not to do certain thing...

Kinsella on Liberty Podcast, Episode 236. [Update: a transcript is now available.] At Libertopia 2012, I delivered a 45-minute talk , "Intellectual Nonsense: Fallacious Arguments for IP" (Oct. 12, 2012), the slides for which are below. I spoke for 45 minutes—well, 40, then the last 5 were taken up by a question from J. Neil Schulman—but only covered the first 25 slides. I covered most of the remaining 41 in a separate recording, Part 2: KOL237. This episode covers issues in the first 25 slides, including: Overview of case against IP: purpose of property patent and copyright: as negative servitudes Absurd Arguments for IP “Serious” Arguments for IP Libertarian Property “Creationism” Rand on rearrangement Good ideas are scarce! IP is just like “property”! All property rights are limited/no property rights are “absolute” Absolute property rights We should “balance” innovation/IP vs. free speech Roots of copyright: censorship Balance: between copyright and freedom of speech Hollywood blockbuster movies vs. Youtube/Internet freedom We should “balance” innovation/IP vs. free speech IP is not a monopoly! Origin of modern patents Liberty is good, but not our “only value” (Previously posted as here: Intellectual Nonsense: Fallacious Arguments for IP (Libertopia 2012) (Oct. 13, 2012). See also See also: There are No Good Arguments for Intellectual Property.) At Libertopia, I also participated in an hour-long IP panel with Charles Johnson, moderated by Butler Shaffer. It is presented in Part 3, KOL238. Update: I thought of one more argument that I forgot to cover in the slides and talk. It is the argument made by Silas Barta that (a) some libertarians support rights in airwaves (electromagnetic spectra); but (b) if you support airwave rights you have no basis to object to rights in other nonscarce resources like inventions or patterns of information (see Why Airwaves (Electromagnetic Spectra) Are (Arguably) Property). [Update: See also Silas Barta: The shortest, safest libertarian case [sic] for IP] There are several problems with this argument. First, not all libertarians support rights in EM spectra. So they are not committed to favor IP rights, even by Barta's argument. Second, even if EM spectra ought to be homesteadable, it does not mean that patterns of information ought to be. This is because EM spectra are actually scarce resources, while patterns of information are not. IP proponents typically grudgingly admit, when pressed, that EM spectra are scarce but patterns of information—knowledge—is not, but they then shift to the argument that the monopoly over information leads to a "right to exploit" the monopoly, which leads to acquisition of profit (money), which is a scarce resource. The problem with the latter maneuver is that the profit comes from money voluntarily handed over to a seller by a customer. But the customer owns his money until he chooses to spend it. No other person has any property right claim in other people's money or, thus, in any possible future income stream or profits. Third, even if support of airwave property rights were to imply some type of possible rights in information or the right-to-exploit information, it does not imply that legislated IP rights systems like patent and copyright are justified (see, e.g., Legislation and Law in a Free Society). The advocate of an IP system that is somehow compatible with EM spectra rights has the burden of making a positive obligation for this system, and specifying its details. He can't just say that IP is justified just because some of its opponents favor EM rights or are confused on the EM issue. Finally, and to complement the previous point: even if you can argue that EM rights are valid, and do somehow impinge on normal property rights in scarce resources (which I disagree with), this does not mean that "anything goes",

Again, the IP proponent would need to put forth a positive argument for IP rights. It cannot be established by criticizing its critics. As an analogy: suppose someone believes conscription is justified, but also opposes rape. You cannot show that rape is justified just because some people are wrong on conscription; you cannot even show that rape is justified if conscription is justified. Another argument I sometimes hear is exemplified here: By such a viewpoint there’s nothing wrong with raiding an online bank account – how can the account holder claim to own something as arcane as electronic digits? People can’t claim to own electricity or numbers hence they can...

This unique 'Bootleg Broadcast' episode of the show is a live recording of a recent talk I gave in West Hollywood California, to celebrate my 100th episode of The Life Stylist Podcast. Having devoted the past twenty-plus years of my life to spiritual growth and metaphysical understanding, it seems that the next phase of my journey is naturally guiding me down the path of sharing my experiences with live audiences, as an inspirational (albeit reluctant) teacher of sorts. This raw, unedited live recording is my second-ever public talk, witch attempts to tackle the sometimes challenging topics of god, ego, and spiritual liberation. After receiving such an abundance of positive feedback on my recent debut presentation at Cap Beauty in NYC, and constant requests for more spiritually-based content, I've decided to put this show out as an exercise of courage and vulnerability. If there's one thing I've learned in my first year as a podcast host, it's that people want the truth. They want something real. And the paradox of that fact is that the more open I become about my spiritual life, the more people relate to it and derive hope and inspiration from my experience on the path to enlightenment. But why should we care about the spiritual part of life anyway? What's the point? Ask yourself the following questions, and you may arrive at a place of curiosity, if not a legitimate desire to know more. Are you able to find peace in your pain? Can you reach and maintain a level of surrender in your life to the point that you rarely get rattled by the day to day stresses of the human experience? Do you control your mind, or does it control you? These are but a few of the questions I attempt to tackle in this introspective episode. Although this particular lecture is highly spontaneous and meandering, there are a couple of consistent themes, such as: How to escape the pain of the ego mind by walking through the inevitable pain in life The importance of strictly avoiding negative, thoughts, deeds and actions The immense power of self-love and acceptance How and why I started the podcast, and how it has served my personal development and evolution I hope that this talk and ones like it which are likely to follow can provide a light-hearted and accessible approach to living a spiritually-centered life. The beautiful thing about finding salvation is that we are each free to do it in our way, and are open to choose whichever path best suits our current level of development and understanding. May you find god in whatever form gives your life meaning and fulfillment. LINK TO ORIGINAL VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Gu3gfe1hsQ In this video Drake demonstrates, out of the mouth of one of their own scientists, that the scientific method is all based upon the fallacy of induction, as the conclusion is never necessitated from the premises (and thus is always invalid), and also commits the formal fallacy of affirming the consequent (if A, then B. B, therefore A. If this is true, then that is true. That is true, therefore this is true. The problem is that B does not justify itself but you justified it with the assumption A as the only possible explanation when there could be another correct answer; assumption A being one possibility out of an infinite number, thus reducing your probability of knowledge to 0%), thus collapsing all of scientific inquiry or any materialist or atheist worldview. The proof for Yah's existence is that without Him one could not prove anything. Proof requires logic. Unless one can account for the laws of logic, the proof ends in an infinite regress of "how do you know that?" If you cannot account for the laws of logic (which are abstract, invariant, and universal), you cannot prove anything. Due to causality also being unable to be established outside of revelation (due to the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy, or "after this, therefore because of this"), this is proof of God by way of impossibility of the contrary and reduction ad absurdum (all other attempts at knowledge being impossible and reducing to the absurd), as for any knowledge to be possible it requires revelation from God and valid deduction (and thus necessitated conclusions) therefrom.

Solomon @cindyfsolomon @prodmgmttalk and @ValWorkman Travis says, "From the first day I realized that figuring out what to build was a far more difficult problem than just building something, I knew my days of coding were coming to an end. Since then, I've done everything I can to learn from my peers in the product management community with the hope that, together, we can increase the value of our products, our companies, and our careers. The term comes from Latin solus (alone) and ipse (self). Solipsism as an epistemological position holds that knowledge of anything outside one's own mind is unsure. The external world and other minds cannot be known, and might not exist outside the mind. As a metaphysical position, solipsism goes further to the conclusion that the world and other minds do not exist. Although the number of individuals sincerely espousing solipsism has been small, it is not uncommon for one philosopher to accuse another's arguments of entailing solipsism as an unwanted consequence, in a kind of reductio ad absurdum. In the history of philosophy, solipsism has also served as a skeptical hypothesis. Reason: Reason is a term that refers to the capacity human beings have to make sense of things, to establish and verify facts, and to change or justify practices, institutions, and beliefs.[1] It is closely associated with such characteristically human activities as philosophy, science, language, mathematics, and art, and is normally considered to be a definitive characteristic of human nature.[2] The concept of reason is sometimes referred to as rationality and sometimes as discursive reason, in opposition to "intuitive reason".[3] Reason or "reasoning" is associated with thinking, cognition, and intellect. Reason, like habit or intuition, is one of the ways by which thinking comes from one idea to a related idea. For example, it is the means by which rational beings understand themselves to think about cause and effect, truth and falsehood, and what is good or bad. In contrast to reason as an abstract noun, a reason is a consideration which explains or justifies some event, phenomenon or behaviour.[4] The ways in which human beings reason through argument are the subject of inquiries in the field of logic. Reason is closely identified with the ability to self-consciously change beliefs, attitudes, traditions, and institutions, and therefore with the capacity for freedom and self-determination.[5] Fallacies: In logic and rhetoric, a fallacy is usually an improper argumentation in reasoning resulting in a misconception or presumption. By accident or design, fallacies may exploit emotional triggers in the listener or interlocutor (appeal to emotion), or take advantage of social relationships between people (e.g. argument from authority). Fallacious arguments are often structured using rhetorical patterns that obscure any logical argument. Fallacies can be used to win arguments regardless of the merits. Among such devices, discussed in more detail below, are: "ignoring the question" to divert argument to unrelated issues using a red herring, making the argument personal (argumentum ad hominem) and discrediting the opposition's character, "begging the question" (petito principi), the use of the non-sequitor, false cause and effect (post hoc ergo propter hoc), bandwagoning (everyone says so), the "false dilemma" or "either-or fallacy" in which the situation is oversimplified, "card-stacking" or selective use of facts, and "false analogy". Another favorite device is the "false generalization", an abstraction of the argument that shifts discussion to platitudes where the facts of the matter are lost. There are many, many more tricks to divert attention from careful exploration of a subject.[1] Fallacies can generally be classified as informal (premises fail to support the proposed conclusion, but the argument is structured properly) or formal (logical structure is flawed). The root words fall and fals come from a Latin word that means to ‘trick.’ Some common words derived from this root word are false and fault. Watch out for the ‘tricks’ this root can play, for the word faucet (tap) is also derived from this root word, and you’ll probably be surprised to learn why.Like this? In this season of gift giving, listen in as Adam redirects attention to the Gift Within, the one that is oftentimes overlooked in modern thought. In another thought-provoking discourse, he examines several revered scientific concepts and shows how they skew our perception of our reality, Self-Worth, and maintain unnecessary blindness to the Gift.
