As farmers, entrepreneurs and activists, these modern-day pioneers find their initial optimism is quickly replaced with uncertainty and fear as the new legislation favors deep pocketed corporations. Those who shaped the foundations of the cannabis industry for decades soon find themselves struggling to fight for their piece of the American Dream in a market they helped create.Lady Buds features second-generation cannabis farmer Chiah Rodriques, 72-year-old African American retired Catholic school principal turned dispensary owner Sue Taylor, Latinx queer activist Felicia Carbajal, serial entrepreneur Karyn Wagner, and Humboldt elders The Bud Sisters. Their stories speak to the many opportunities and issues facing commercial cannabis today: the complicated dynamics of raising a family on a cannabis farm, the ongoing fight for those adversely affected by the War on Drugs, educating seniors citizens about the healing power of cannabis, and honoring the LGBTQ activists who fought for legalizing medical marijuana over 25 years ago.At every turn these trailblazers defy stereotypes, while revealing that cannabis is much more than a plant-it's a community.ln her feature debut, award-winning filmmaker Chris J. Russo offers an insightful journey into the lives and work of the women who are the backbone of the cannabis culture in California. Their struggles and triumphs paint a picture of an industry in fux as it grapples with preserving its storied heritage while looking toward the future.About Chris, Chiah and Sue:Chris J. As an African- American businesswoman in a white, male-dominated industry, Sue presses forward despite financial concerns, repeated delays and the frustrations of dealing with the local bureaucracy.Chiah Rodriques grew cannabis plants under blackberry trees and hid from federal helicopters growing up. As an adult and second-generation farmer, she's lived most of her life in the shadows until California legalized cannabis, which offered her the opportunity to become a permitted cultivator. I spoke to Grace Bridger and Runyararo Mapfumo who are a producer / director duo that work together under the banner DessyMak films and have made a number of short films through that company. They have their own careers separately and we talk about both of them, but that producer-director relationship is such a unique thing and so I was keen to ask them about how they formed that bond and what their journey together has been like! Their short film MASTERPIECE premiered at the BFI London Film Festival in 2017 and was selected as a Vimeo Staff Pick. Grace then went on to develop and produce DAWN IN THE DARK, written and directed by Runyararo, which was supported by BBC Films and BFI NETWORK and which premiered at BFI London Film Festival 2019 and has also been selected for festivals such as Encounters Film Festival, Underwire Festival and the Norwich Film Festival. Grace then produced Runyararo's BBC and Google Arts commissioned short SENSATIONAL SIMMY which was released and broadcast on BBC and BBC iPlayer and then Grace developed and secured funding from Uncertain Kingdom for Runyararo's documentary WHAT'S IN A NAME? which was released as part of an anthology of films aiming to provide a portrait of contemporary UK. Grace is originally from Perth in Australia, and has most recently worked on a number of films with producer Tracy O’Riordan at Moonspun Films; as a Production Secretary on Clio Barnard’s Ali & Ava, and then as a Producer’s Assistant and Assistant Producer, working in post-production on Hong Khaou’s Monsoon. As well as continuing to work with Runyararo, Grace is also currently working with Producer Fiona Lamptey as Post Production Supervisor on four Sci-Fi short films supported by Film4. Meanwhile Runyararo is currently developing her debut feature film and has recently finished directing block 2 of Netflix’s Sex Education, Season 3. We talk about their respective career paths, setting up their own production company, the learning curves along the way and how they’ve supported each other, we also chat about making shorts, transitioning to bigger projects, making career pivots and asking stupid questions. Janace has had a pretty remarkable career. Jumping right in to Production at an early age after moving to California she started working on commercials as a PA.Her first experience with an LA production company was shooting “Back to the Future,” trailers on the central coast. Janace explains growing up with a strict upbringing she had no idea what an actual “trailer,” for a movie was lol but quickly figured it out and the film industry hooked her. She landed a job on the Universal lot at 19 years old, and steadily built her career from there. From job to job-growing her network and putting all her efforts and time into her career-she tells us that she “feels like her career has taken on a very steady slow progression, with very regular growth.” As a Producer, she is drawn to “bringing people together, and finding pieces that can be brought together to get great results.” It’s really incredible to hear how Janace met her ex-husband and became a Step Mother to his two children fairly quickly. She then had a child of her own-another boy-and learned to navigate her career and life as a Mother. We talk life with kids, childcare, co-workers, and the importance of family and co-parenting. After hearing her talk about a recent experience where a College student told her that they had been TOLD “You can’t have a family AND work in the film industry,” “Janace is determined to make a difference and help change the narrative as she is a prime example that you CAN-“-being a Woman who has done both. Parenthood to Janace is…”The Best Thing Ever.” Janace’s Mantra: “The Way is Simple, but the Road Takes Courage”. This is very meaningful to me and I keep it in my mind and heart all the time, particularly when I am facing adversity and needing personal strength.

Usually lasting 15–20 minutes and done in the evening, the prayer prompts us to remember God’s presence, express gratitude, reflect on the day, and prepare for the day to come. The video above uses contemplative imagery captured from daily life with our coworkers to show how the prayer’s application is both organic and accessible. So how can a Post Production Supervisor save your butt? Well I've been a Post Production Supervisor for over 15 years and have seen a lot of indie filmmakers get beaten up, taken advantage of and just plain ripped off in the post production process. In short the Post Production Supervisor is there to protect the film or project from going over budget, ripped off and making sure everything is done on time and budget. Here is the official definition of a Post Production Supervisor:Post Production Supervisors are responsible for the post production process, during which they maintain clarity of information and good channels of communication between the producer, editor, supervising sound editor, the facilities companies (such as film labs, CGI studios and negative cutters) and the production accountant. The Post Production Supervisor has a pivotal role in ensuring that the film's post production budget is manageable and doable, and that all deadlines are met. Take a listen!
