Today we speak with Irish composer Dana Scallon (known professionally as DANA) about the life of Saint Brigid, patroness of Ireland. Dana was inspired to write a hymn reflecting the life of Saint Brigid, celebrating the 1500th anniversary of the saint's death, and she was gracious enough to sit down and share her inspiration for the piece today. Dana joins us today from her home in Ireland. For more information about St. Brigid and St. Brigid's Song, check out the show notes of this episode at ministrymonday.org.

St. Brigid is the earliest and best-known of the female saints of Ireland. In the generation after St. Patrick, she established a monastery for men and women at Kildare which became one of the most powerful and influential centres of the Church in early Ireland.  The stories of Brigid's life and deeds survive in several early sources, but the most important are two Latin lives written a century or more after her death. The first was composed by a churchman named Cogitosus and tells of her many miracles of healing and helping the poor. The second source, known as the Vita Prima, continues the tradition with more tales of marvellous deeds and journeys throughout the island. Both Latin sources are a treasure house of information not just about the legends of Brigid but also daily life, the role of women, and the spread of Christianity in Ireland.  Philip Freeman's Two Lives of Saint Brigid (Four Courts Press, 2024) for the first time presents together an English translation of both the Life of Brigid by Cogitosus and the Vita Prima, along with the Latin text of both carefully edited from the best medieval manuscripts. Born in the 5th century, St. Brigid's journey is shrouded in myth and legend, yet her impact on Irish culture and spirituality remains profound to this day. Our exploration begins with the early years of Brigid, born into a pagan family but destined for greatness in the Christian faith. We uncover the miraculous stories surrounding her birth, where flames illuminated her presence, symbolizing her future as a beacon of light and hope. As we navigate through her remarkable life, we discover Brigid's unwavering commitment to serving others, which led her to establish monastic communities that provided refuge, education, and healing to countless souls. Her compassion knew no bounds, as she tirelessly worked to alleviate the suffering of the poor and marginalized. But perhaps most striking is St. Brigid's embodiment of feminine empowerment in a predominantly patriarchal society. As one of Ireland's patron saints, she challenged societal norms and advocated for women's rights, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of Irish Christianity.   Follow us on IG: @homance_chronicles Connect with us: linktr.ee/homance Send us a Hoe of History request: homancepodcast@gmail.com

Then it's time to head to Ireland, a place that is a good place to be horny and for the Virgin Mary to rebrand herself. As we speak I'm getting ready to head to India and Vietnam for work so this episode is going to be short, sweet and punchy. I'm really excited about the guests that'll be featuring on the podcast whilst I'm away for two weeks. As you all know I am running a retreat in August later this year in Bali that's sold out and before I hold space and facilitate, I am also attending a retreat in India! I've never been before so a whole new adventure awaits. The lead up to it has been interesting, lots happening and I'm sure lots to transpire and share after. Today is February 29th as I record this episode and it's a leap year that comes every 4 years. The last time we had a leap year was amongst the huge global change and shift in consciousness that was in February 29th 2020. Given leap years don't happen all too often, this date I feel energetically holds space to reflect. What was life like for you 4 years ago around this time? A leap year is about balance A leap year is made to account for lost time, giving us an additional calendar day every four years. In this is also an opportunity to get back into balance and harmony especially given the last few weeks have been energetically intense. Where do you need more balance and harmony in your life right now? Numerology of the leap year in 2024 Every leap year holds the master energy of 11 which I've spoken about in a couple of energy updates already this year but to remind you its the number of the master architect, it's about the vision, the plan and intuition. The numerology of the leap year 2+9+2+2+0+2+4 = 21 = 2 + 1 = 3. The number 3 in numerology is linked to Jupiter which is all about abundance and being an 8 year of course, the energy is strong for abundance. It could be a time to look at your finances, to work on your money mindset and/or manifest money. There's also that saying that goes good things come in 3… Astrologically Mercury is harmoniously dancing with Jupiter at the moment so despite there being some thick and heavy karmic energy in the air, this portal represents optimism, hope and joy. A leap year is about faith A leap can also be embodied by well the leap of faith, the fool tarot card, symbolising a jump into the unknown, anything is possible! A leap of faith is also akin to a quantum jump, timelines can shift, massive growths, a surge in your transformation and changes can happen all in a moment. There's a window for breakthroughs to occur. There's a window for spiritual awakenings to happen. With all portals yes it's most potent on the day of but the portal opens for a few days aside. As with any portal pay attention to signs and synchronicities that pop up, the cosmic coincidences that are at play.Today is February 29th as I record this episode and it's a leap year that comes every 4 years. The last time we had a leap year was amongst the huge global change and shift in consciousness that was in February 29th 2020. Given leap years don't happen all too often, this date I feel energetically holds space to reflect. What was life like for you 4 years ago around this time? A leap year breaks traditions and is about being bold In ancient Irish Folklore it was said that Saint Brigid, like the Goddess Brigid of light made a deal with Saint Patrick where back in the day a deal was struck where women could propose to men to balan...

Tuncer Murat Cihan, a 52-year-old Turkish man, was killed when two gunmen opened fire in Santa Maria Church in Istanbul's Sariyer district during Mass on January 28. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/256691/victim-of-istanbul-attack-was-a-muslim-who-often-went-to-catholic-mass The Vatican announced on Wednesday the appointment of Father Peter Wu Yishun as the bishop of the Apostolic Prefecture of Shaowu (Minbei), the third appointment of a bishop in China in just a week. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/256700/holy-see-appoints-third-chinese-bishop-in-less-than-a-week-signaling-shift-toward-beijing Half a dozen pro-life activists on Tuesday were found guilty of violating a federal law, the FACE Act, that forbids protesters from blocking the entrances to abortion clinics. The federal FACE Act prohibits “violent, threatening, damaging, and obstructive conduct intended to injure, intimidate, or interfere with the right to seek, obtain, or provide reproductive health services.” It was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1994. The defendants had been charged with a blockade that occurred at the Carafem Health Center Clinic in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, in 2021. The defendants will be sentenced on July 2. They “each face up to a maximum of 10 and a half years in prison, three years of supervised release, and fines of up to $260,000,” the Department of Justice said. At least one of the defendants plans to appeal. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/256692/six-pro-life-activists-convicted-of-federal-face-act-charges-face-over-a-decade-in-prison The US Supreme Court announced Monday that oral arguments in a high-stakes abortion pill case will be heard on March 26. The decision in the case could determine whether the abortion pill mifepristone can be prescribed by telemedicine or sent through the mail. The Biden administration is challenging a federal court ruling that found that the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) did not follow proper testing and safety protocols when it approved the abortion drug in 2000. Over the years, other restrictions on the drug have been removed. In 2016, the FDA determined that the drug can be used when a woman is pregnant with a child at 70 days gestation. Before 2016, the gestational limit was seven weeks. The FDA also decided in 2016 that non-physicians could prescribe the pill. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/256689/us-supreme-court-to-hear-major-abortion-pill-case-in-march Today, the Church celebrates Saint Brigid of Kildare, a monastic foundress who is – together with Saint Patrick and Saint Columcille – one of Ireland's three patron saints. Saint Brigid directly influenced several other future saints of Ireland, and her many religious communities helped to secure the country's conversion from paganism to the Catholic faith. Under Brigid's leadership, the abbey she founded at Kildare played a major role in the successful Christianization of Ireland. The abbess' influence was felt in the subsequent era of the Irish Church, a time when the country became known for its many monasteries and their intellectual achievements. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/st-brigid-of-ireland-134

Punxsutawney Phil carries a heavy load on his little shoulders. According to folklore, if the groundhog pops out of his burrow and sees his shadow today, there will be six more weeks of winter. If there's no shadow, it means an early spring. Phil has become the unofficial groundhog of Groundhog Day. He's near the small town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. His appearance is part of a day-long festival that's been celebrated since 1887. Many other towns hold similar fetes. There actually is a bit of truth to the legends. Crisp, sunny days often follow cold fronts — part of a pattern of continuing cold weather. Cloudy skies can be produced by warmer air pushing up from the south — perhaps the start of more spring-like patterns. Groundhog Day is one of several commemorations of a cross-quarter day. Such days occur about half way between a solstice and an equinox. In many cultures, a cross-quarter day represented the beginning of a new season, not its middle. In the British Isles, there were several celebrations of the February cross-quarter day. In Ireland, it began as Imbolg, which honored the goddess Brigid. Later, Christians celebrated it as Saint Brigid's Day, honoring Ireland's patron saint. And in other regions, it was Candlemas. People had their candles blessed by a priest, then used them to light up the rest of the year. So keep an eye on your own skies to see if spring is nigh — or winter will maintain its icy grip. For thousands of years Brigit has been known as the Great Bear Mother. She is also known as the Celtic Goddess of the Four Flames and Saint Brigid of Ireland. She was originally the Goddess of the Bear Clans from over 4000 years ago and her flame has been tended almost continuously for hundreds of years at the Abbey in Kildare, Ireland. In the Winter months, she goes on a journey into the underworld and returns on January 31st, known as Imbolc, to celebrate the survival of another year of winter and bring forth the energy of new birth for the coming Spring.
