Today, we are debunking the myth that cryptocurrencies are completely unregulated. I will share examples of why it's not the "Wild West" by pointing to existing regulations and laws that can apply today and in the future. This week, I'm joined by my dear friend, Sandra Ro, for episode 179 of the Tech Intersect™ Podcast to discuss the myth that crypto is unregulated! Right now, there are some negative impacts because of the regulatory uncertainty, which impacts consumers, entrepreneurs, and countries' competitiveness. Not only do we chat about current regulations, but we also get into some of my predictions that more bipartisan efforts towards taxonomy and how common language around cryptocurrencies could lead to more workable regulations in the coming years.POWERED BY ADVANTAGE EVANS™ ACADEMY Join me for the Virtual Launch Events! Or is it simply a means of survival for millions of people in the region who can't access any other forms of money? We find out by talking to Gaby Hui from Merkle Science, former US government advisor Ari Redbord head of legal and government affairs at TRM labs, Artem Afian a Ukrainian lawyer who has compiled a blacklist of crypto wallets connected to Russian politicians, Sir Julian Lee, former EU commissioner for the Security Union and Sandra Ro, CEO of the Global Blockchain Business Council - a non-profit organisation focused on developing the blockchain industry. In this Best of 2019 episode, I selected the clips that seemed most representative of what crypto was about this year, which I call, The Year Things Got Geopolitical. My only regret is that none of the clips about DAOs lent themselves well to this episode. However, years from now, after we've got global stablecoins pinging around the world at a high transactions-per-second rate, the crypto community has made peace with U.S. regulators, and more of our lives seems to take place in the borderless digital world, perhaps we'll find it ironic that DAOs were burbling up right around the same time. Sandra Ro, the CEO of the Global Blockchain Business Council and former head of digitization at CME, explains what the GBBC does, how it chooses partners, and what level of involvement they have with projects under the GBBC umbrella. We discuss some of the more controversial projects, such as the Voatz pilot that conducted election voting using blockchain technology, as well as how she responds to people saying many "blockchain" projects could instead use a database. She also reveals why she believes that the US will eventually lead the world on crypto regulation, why she thinks that there's strength in the fragmentation in US regulations and what she thinks is the best way forward on the BitLicense. Plus, she gives us the inside scoop on what it took for her to get CME to launch Bitcoin futures. Thank you to our sponsors! This is the third and final episode in our series of three talks we did at the Odyssey Hackathon in our home town Groningen, earlier this year. Today’s guest is Sandra Ro, a derivatives-trader-turned-crypto-evangelist, entrepreneur, angel investor, and CEO of the Global Blockchain Business Council. GBBC’s mission is to educate governments, regulators and executives at large corporations about “this thing called blockchain that can be very confusing at times”. We talk about peer-to-peer transfer of value, tokenization and incentives models, provenance and anti-counterfeiting and about ecosystem development. We also talk about regulation: “Of course there has to be regulation. There have to be rules to the game. Self-regulation does not work. The greed is real.” Sandra is enthusiastic about the opportunities blockchain offers to repair the shortcomings of capitalism: “The system today does not work very well when you are poor. This technology can change that.” She also shares an interesting cultural observation: “The culture in this [blockchain] space is much more cooperative, much more about growing the pie together. And it is very interesting to see [here] that this culture is now starting to impact big businesses. I have already seen cooperations that I never thought would exist. Blockchain has already changed the world. It has already changed mindsets, and that is often the most difficult part of change.”
In today's bonus episode Simon joined by a host of brilliant guests directly from the stage at Money20/20, including: Matthew Pollard, Founder Archax Sandra Ro, CEO, CBBC Lasse Meholm, Head of Blockchain & DLT Strategy, DNB Bank First up the panel discuss Centralised VS Decentralised. Is the word decentralisation scary? Should we use the word distributed instead? Banks are already decentralised, but would it be more efficient to have one bank to rule them all? Can we move to a world where there is a mutable ledger? Or are we just dropping buzzwords at this point? Next, we talk about Utilities VS Securities! So, what is a token? What is the difference between a token and a traditional accounting entry? Can you think of tokens as loyalty points? What about the word security? Also, salt, squirrels and gold dragons, have you got your historical currencies straight? Join us for a quick quiz on what items used to be treated as currency! Finally, our panel talks about the future of programmable money. First of all, what does it mean? Could there be a case of social money granted from the government getting programmed to only be useable in the way the government wants you to use it? Should the government have access to that information? Or, could it mean a more frictionless way for companies to participate in capital formation? All this and so much more on this week's bonus episode of Blockchain Insider. And why not send us your best tweets? See if you can get a shout out on the show! We hope you enjoy the show and, as ever, don't forget to subscribe! Want to join the conversation on all the topics discussed? Tweet the show @bchaininsider and if you really love the show, please leave us a review on iTunes. This week's episode of Blockchain Insider was produced by Laura Watkins and Petrit Berisha. Edited by Alex Woodhouse. Special Guests: Lasse Meholm, Matthew Pollard, and Sandra Ro.
Today we have a very special bonus episode of Blockchain Insider for you, from the Omaha blockchain summit we have a rare chance to get some real leaders in the field all together in the same room to discuss some of the most pressing issues in blockchain and how the industry is reacting to changes. Amber Baldet is joined by a roundtable of some very special blockchain guests including: Sandra Ro, CEO GBBC Steven Becker, President & COO MakerDAO Richard Burton, CEO Balance Ingrid Wadell, Director Disruptive Technologies & Innovation Kyle Tut, Co-Founder BlockEra Our guests talk about partnerships, banks, finance projects, crypto communities and what keeps them up at night. Special Guests: Amber Baldet, Ingrid Wadell, Kyle Tut, Richard Burton, Sandra Ro, and Steven Becker.
Our special guest for this episode of Blockchain and Financial Inclusion is Sandra Ro, the CEO of Global Blockchain Business Council (GBBC). Sandra, who is ex-banker, with several years of experience on the trading floors of London, became a believer of Blockchain in 2012. She wears several hats in her journey within Blockchain for Social Impact.Efi Pylarinou and Arun Krishnakumar discuss several topics with Sandra starting from her involvement in Blockchain for farmers. Sandra explains how the on-the-ground challenges faced by farmers in Africa was an eye opener for her, and provides insights based on hands-on experiences in these markets. The discussion touches upon a practical example of how farmers in Senegal benefited from getting their assets on Blockchain. The transparency and trust that the information sitting on a network, allowed them to access further opportunities, globally.Sandra discusses the origins of GBBC - in Sir Richard Branson's island in 2016, and how the working model has benefited enterprises and governments across the world. We close off the discussion with the possibilities of Blockchain based alternate ecosystems, when a particular region is excluded from main stream financial services. First up, Binance are offering a $250,000 bounty for the arrest of hackers that tried to infiltrate the exchange earlier in March! Is Bitcoin as untraceable as we think? The met police claim that Bitcoin is not anonymous and is easy to track! Simon and Colin discuss this one in great depth. Next up, Bitfinex'd, the the pseudonymous blogger and persistent critic of cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex has lawyered up! An interesting saga to keep an eye on.... Following on from International Women's Day it was fitting that CoinDesk, one of the larger crypto publications wrote a great piece on encouraging and acknowledging Women in Crypto! We were super lucky to have Sandra Ro's insights on today's show as well! From Bifinex'd to Utility Token Bill's, Wyoming's state legislature has cleared a bill that would exempt certain types of crypto assets from securities laws. Are crypto-assets creeping toward legitimation? Now the next headline was controversial, but when Simon and Colin dogged deeper- it actually raised some interesting points. From The Verge, the headline read- 'Blockchain' is meaningless.... This wouldn't be a blockchain based show without mentioning the good folks of Ripple! According to Bloomberg Technology they have lost their bid to keep it's cryptocurrency fight in California. The dispute is over a staggering amount of XRP- once worth over $16 Billion, with R3. Another headline grabber, the FT writes that SWIFT claim blockchain not ready for mainstream use! According to them, the tech needs to mature to handle high volume transactions. From mainstream use to miners, Bitcoin miners have taken over a town in Seattle! This one was close to home for CGP (literally) so he gave us a good run down on this story. Staying with mining, Egypt are apparently forcing their citizens to mine cryptocurrency?! Simon and Colin had a lot to say about this questionable and slightly confusing headline! And if you enjoyed our tweet of the week why not send us your best tweets? See if you can make it on to the show! We hope you enjoy the show and, as ever, don't forget to subscribe. Want to join the conversation on all the topics discussed? Tweet the show @bchaininsider and if you really love the show, why not leave us a review on iTunes? Special Guest: Sandra Ro.
