Welcome to a special edition of the Fintech Takes podcast. I'm Alex Johnson, here with Colton Pond, Chief Marketing Officer at LoanPro. We're recording live from the Salt Flats outside of Salt Lake City during LoanPro's customer advisory board meeting. I'm excited to dive into one of my favorite topics—loan servicing—and co-interview a few attendees with Colton. In this episode, we'll consider what happens after a customer says “yes.” First up, we speak to Jeff Yim, CFO at Borrowell, one of Canada's largest fintechs, helping 3.5M members navigate credit. In a landscape shaped by rising mortgage rates, Jeff speaks to how stellar onboarding and customer service are essential for a competitive edge. Next, we chat with Jared Jones from Moov, a payment platform that's evolved into both an acquiring and issuing processor. As ACH payments decline, they offer competitive fixed interchange rates for debt repayment, focusing on user-first innovations. Then Nick Pesce from Happy Money, dedicated to unsecured personal loans in partnership with credit unions, shares how they're scaling to meet demand for flexible loans, leveraging personalized approaches and credit union partnerships as credit card debt hits record highs. That's followed by Kamal Rajan and Anthony Navarro, who are building business banking at Golden 1 Credit Union, one of the largest credit unions in the U.S. They reveal how they're overcoming legacy challenges as they prep to launch ten new products. Raising the standard of quality for embedded finance infrastructure, Newline™ by Fifth Third is an API platform that enables enterprises to launch and scale payment, card and deposit products directly with Fifth Third Bank. In today's episode of Category Visionaries we speak with Wade Arnold, CEO and Founder of Moov, an embedded payments platform that's raised $77.5 Million in funding. Topics Discussed: Wade's background across several companies, and his frustration at payment platforms that are built on top of outdated infrastructure The entrepreneurs and authors that most inspire Wade Why less than 8% of SaaS companies have payments integrated into their platforms, and how Moov helps them change that The roller-coaster of being an entrepreneur, including getting too excited and taking premature decisions Why the one piece of advice Wade would give to his younger self goes against what every startup book says Favorite book: WTF? What's the Future and Why It's Up to Us
“Being a part of financial services for the last 15 or 20 years, it seemed like we were always putting lipstick on the pig”. Wade Arnold was tired of putting a nice UI on creaky infrastructure and he saw how insufficient payment systems are for today's internet-based businesses. So Wade founded Moov, a fintech that's building systems for the way money moves today – and they're starting at the very bottom of the stack and building their way up. On this episode, Wade shares how Moov emerged from an open source project, how its embrace of developer communities has become a competitive advantage, and why he encourages everyone to “respect the craft” of software development. This is Crafted from Artium: a show about great products, and the people who make them. Finding technical engineering leaders is easy. You want to find technical engineering leaders who know how to create the right environment for their teams to thrive. Don't get religious about your engineering tools and processes. What matters is getting things in front of the customer, and the tools you use to get there should simply facilitate that. Community, community, community.Everyone in the marketing world is talking about it. Even everyone in the fintech world seems to be talking about it. A combination of the pandemic, going online and even crypto seemed to have weirdly brought us together with the power of online communities. But what does community really mean? If you're a founder or marketer, should you be trying to build a community to attract and retain customers? And what does a successful community look like?Today, I explore answers to those questions with our guest, Graham McBain. Graham is the community manager at Moov, a B2B payments API company. He's in charge of the Moov Slack community, which currently has over 2,500 members, is super active, and by all measures, a success. Communities are hard to build. The time and energy commitment is high, but the reward and upside is infinite. In this episode, we dive deep into how Graham went about growing the Slack community, how he maintains it, and his own thoughts on the future of community. It's full of practical and tactical tips and advice, so hope you enjoy! Guest Simon Jones: where do you see the pain points and the points of action in the market generally? Guest Liz Pike: if a company or a PE firm is wanting to combine several business units or companies and expand their payments what are some things you suggest that they do first Guest Michelle: What trends that you're seeing as to how embedded tech such as what Moov has to offer, who the main audience is, and what are you seeing Moov being used in embedded tech MVPs? Guest Shay: do you see US FinTech companies pulling executives and other human resources from the banking sector? Host Tedd Huff: Do you have any plans to expand beyond the US market? Host Tedd Huff: I have an idea and I wanted to build a FinTech around that idea whether it be moving money from person to person or from business to business where should I start first And what should I do first Guest Michelle: what's been your biggest most grueling part of building Moov? As Founder & CEO of Oceanhouse Media, a leading publisher of mobile apps that uplift, educate and inspire, Michel has developed apps that millions of people have downloaded. Oceanhouse Media has released over 600 apps in its first 10 years. In 2013, the company was ranked #114 on the Inc 500 Fastest-Growing Private Companies list. Michel is a “digital tinkerer” at heart and is known for developing apps that drive personal and professional performance. Some of his more notable creations are “CommitTo3”, Michel's personal daily coaching app “Mindset for Success,” and the recently released “Marshall Goldsmith Coaching” app. In early 2018, Michel founded his 4th company, Extality, which focuses on high-end, enterprise solutions using VR (virtual reality), AR (augmented reality) and MR (mixed reality). The company has delivered groundbreaking work for Magic Leap (a leading AR/MR hardware vendor) and CNN/Turner where they developed CNN's first AR solution for network news delivery in mixed reality. Michel found prior success with Presto Studios, a videogame development company that he co-founded and ran for 11 years. Presto Studios had numerous hits including “The Journeyman Project” series, “Myst 3: Exile” and many more. His first company, MOOV design, was founded in 1989 where he developed innovative interactive multimedia projects many years before these new technologies were mainstream. One stand-out project from the time was Verbum Interactive (the world's first interactive, multimedia magazine). Michel is extremely active in Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO) where he currently serves as the Regional Chair for the US West Regional Council after many years of local chapter service. He has completed the 3-year EO Entrepreneurial Masters Program at MIT and EO's Global Leadership Academy in Washington D.C. As someone who has strived for and found success in work, personal and family life, Michel has decided that it is time to give back. He remains an active learner as his efforts are now transitioning to writing, coaching, teaching and lecturing. mk@omapp.com | www.MichelKripalani.com (760) 715-5790 | Twitter @MKripalani | Intragram @michelkripalani | LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/michelkripalani/
