We have a 'Special Edition' of @EchoChamberFP https://www.instagram.com/echochamberfp/ for you today, people!!! It's a bit of a revisit, because we first looked at this film during Sci-Fi London 2023, but looking back at that review: https://youtu.be/Yh1aM4iPxsY I didn't really do things justice. So thanks to the great Matt Hulse, we were able to not just take another look at the feature, BUT, sit down with the creative mind (one of them) behind the project and really get into the mechanics of the creation, production, casting, all that good stuff. We also touched upon A.I, creative techniques, and the perception of material. It was a really fun time, which could have been a lot longer, you won't want to miss it!!! Watch the conversation: HERE! https://youtu.be/dgix9eiMoBM 'The Bystanders' is the feature directorial debut from Gabriel Foster Prior, which he co-wrote with Jack Hughes. Peter Weir (Scott Haran) – a former child genius at chess who is now an inconspicuous office drone – is recruited precisely for his anonymity to become a Bystander, a kind of empowered guardian angel tasked with watching over, and invisibly helping, an individual subject. Peter is trained by jaded Bystander Frank (Seann Walsh), who out of boredom proposes that they swap subjects, so that Frank now has ‘middle-class girl from Kent' Sarah (Georgia Mabel Clarke), and Peter has feckless loser Luke (Andi Jashy), whom Peter hopes to transform into a winner so that Peter himself can win the award for Bystander of the Year, and make up for losing a chess contest decades earlier. Hilarious rivalry ensues, as misanthropic Frank, who can only see the world through ‘Frank-tinted glasses', sets about, purely for the lulz, undermining Luke's – and Peter's – newfound success. This week we have another brother in arms (or I guess in this case quills), a true lover of Sci-Fi, and a film buff at that--Mikel Wisler! He has two standalone books out and available now (Sleepwalker & Unidentified), with a third one on the way, and has written/done the cinematography of a Sci-Fi Short Film currently playing in LONDON SCI-FI FILM FESTIVAL! Our chat was full of funny observations, and intriguing discussions about the route of current technology and its impact of current/future societies. We also discussed how these types of talks and conversations are the heart of science fiction as a genre, and how we use these discussions as inspiration for our work. For more of Mikel, check out his socials via the links below. Make sure to give his film some love, it's coming out soon (after it finishes the film festival circuit) to a screen near you and if you're in the London area, go see it for yourself @ SCI-FI LONDON this weekend! It’s the movie that gave this podcast its name, and a classic of ’50s cinema. But how does Forbidden Planet hold up now it’s old enough to draw its pension? We head to Altair IV to chat about the Fred M Wilcox-directed sci-fi trailblazer, along with Louis Savy, director of the SCI-FI-LONDON festival. Back on Earth, Louis is busy preparing for this year’s SCI-FI-LONDON event, which is the 20th since it began. This milestone festival will need to take place virtually because of the coronavirus lockdown, but that hasn’t held things back. Running 8-13 December, you’ll be able to watch films, see talks and panels (including one hosted by your Robby The Robot’s Waiting podcasters) and even enjoy the annual SCI-FIDO cosplay for dogs, all from the comfort of your own home. https://sci-fi-london.com/ Elsewhere in this episode, the team discuss the tension between a creator’s vision and the viewers’ needs. Christopher Nolan movies where you can’t hear the words? Game Of Thrones episodes where you can’t see a thing? We discuss artistic choices, and where we draw the line on compromise. In need of what-to-watch recommendations? We chat about what else we’ve been viewing this month. How is everyone celebrating Life Day in lockdown? We find out with the new Lego Star Wars Holiday Special. Tanavi introduces the team to Killjoys (now on season five). And Richard and Louis have been reading Ready Player Two, so you don’t have to. David “Darth Vader” Prowse passed away at the age of 85 just as we were getting ready to record the episode. Dave had a curry with him, during his time on SFX magazine, so we share some anecdotes. And there’s just time to digest the latest morsels of sci-fi news. Robert Englund joins Stranger Things! The Daleks have had a makeover in time for the Doctor Who New Year Special! The Expanse is greenlit for a sixth season – which will be its last, though without one of its stars. There’s all this and loads more, in the podcast that’s in its deceleration station preparing to drop below light speed. Episode highlights: 0.00:54 - What we've been watching and reading this week: Killjoys, Ready Player Two (0.05:41), and the Lego Star Wars Holiday Special (0.10:12). 0.15:45 - "I can’t see or hear your movie!" The team discuss artistic choices and audience expectations. It's Christopher Nolan's film, he can mix the sound any way he pleases... right? 0.27:28 – Our special guest Louis Savy talks about Ready Player Two, John Carter Of Mars and his own SCI-FI-LONDON film festival. 0.43.16 – Rewind: is the Forbidden Planet worth a revisit? 1.03:52 – The news! Including David Prowse, Doctor Who, Stranger Things, and more. These are not the voices of the Mysterons: Richard Edwards: film and TV journalist and former editor of SFX magazine. https://twitter.com/RichDEdwards Tanavi Patel: entertainment reporter for SFX and Digital Spy, panel moderator for MCM, FanExpo and more. https://twitter.com/tanavip Dave Bradley: writer, gamer, book reviewer and another former editor of SFX. https://twitter.com/BoxDaveB SPECIAL GUEST! Ilana Rein is an LA-based director and screenwriter whose documentaries and short films have been screened at festivals, galleries and universities internationally. Her award-winning documentary short WE ARE ALL CYLONS premiered at Sci-Fi London in 2011 and enjoyed a long international festival run. She also wrote and directed the short film ELLIPSE, which was shot on location at The Royal Observatory in the U.K. and premiered in May 2013 at the BFI in London. What’s interesting about her is that despite her extensive career as a filmmaker, she did not get around to making her first feature film until she was 50, something I find extremely inspiring and shows that it’s never too late! Written and directed by Ilana Rein and co-written with Brian Smith, PERCEPTION is provocative thriller about the psychic phenomena that shows the struggle between one’s beliefs and one’s ability to question them. Check out the trailer below along with additional info on the film and let me know what you think. Would love to set up a time for you and Ilana to chat on your radio show if you have time. Directed by: Ilana Rein Written by: Ilana Rein and Brian Smith Produced by: Ilana Rein, Brian Smith, and B.D. Gunnell Runtime: 101 minutes Website: www.perceptionamovie.com Starring: Wes Ramsey (General Hospital, Charmed), Meera Rohit Kumbhani (This Is Us, Dave Made a Maze), Caitlin Mehner (Best of Enemies, Ocean’s 8), and Max Jenkins (High Maintenance, Dead to Me) Synopsis: When Daniel, a successful real estate developer, must evict Nina, a mysterious small-time psychic struggling to provide for her young son, the last thing he expects in return is a free reading. But when Nina senses the spirit of Daniel’s dead wife, a once-promising artist, his desire to reconnect with her quickly becomes an obsession. Haunted by memories, Daniel is determined to reunite with his wife—who may have designs of her own. Soon, Daniel and Nina must each decide how far they’ll go to get what they want in this supernatural, psychological thriller.

Welcome to the last episode of Season One of #RWWC! This episode has been a long time coming and I am so glad we managed to make it happen. Alix, my darling friend, is a ridiculously talented actor, voice-over artist, feminist, activist and recently, director! Her and I met at Cannes in serendipitous circumstances, and bonded over our fierceness. (Thanks Adam Lannon for bringing us all together.) Her short-film She Lies Sleeping is currently in competition in Sci-Fi London’s 48h Short Film Challenge. Alix will also soon star as Mary Shelley in A Nightmare Wakes. Check out her IMDB here or @AlixWiltonRegan on Insta and Twitter. In this vulnerable and emotionally-charged episode, we discuss: feeling like you never do enough, politics & the state of our society (based largely on a Western European critique), fake news vs. definitions of objective fact, privilege and unlearning, the necessity of all of us being “IN PROGRESS”, body image and the ultra-skinny industry requirements, gender diversity and imposter syndrome, and SO MUCH MORE. This is for you. You, who has ever been told to “Shut up, (woman)” and haven’t let it stop you from speaking your truth. I CANNOT SAY THIS ENOUGH: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. This has been an incredible year of learning, evolving, growing and unlearning. I love you and I can’t wait to bring better, stronger, deeper conversations to your ears in just a short couple of months. From my grateful and loving heart, your little C. This episode takes a look at the 48 Hour Film challenge as organised by Sci-Fi London. As well as taking a look at the top 10 films to make the 2011 shortlist, Simon and Wayne are joined by Christopher Puttock, director of It's A Trap!s entry, Temporary Status, who gives us his thoughts on the film making process.
