Enduring Hardship: How Suffering Fuels Gospel Growth

Grace is offensive. Holiness is offensive. Yet people everywhere are hungry for both. This tension sits at the heart of the missionary journeys of Paul and Barnabas as they navigate the treacherous waters of sharing the gospel in first-century cities.Following their progress through Antioch, Iconium, Lystra and beyond reveals a striking pattern. Initial enthusiasm often erupts into fierce opposition when the exclusive Jewish establishment realizes that God's chosen family is expanding to include "any old, pork-eating, idol-worshipping social reprobate." The message that anyone could come, repent, be baptized and experience transformation threatens those who've built their identity on being spiritually superior. What's remarkable is not just the opposition they face—public denunciation, stoning, plots against their lives—but their extraordinary resilience. They knew when to stay and when to flee, when to endure and when to move on. Their teaching to new believers wasn't false promises of ease but the stark reality that "it is necessary to go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God." This counterintuitive approach strengthened rather than weakened the early church. The episode in Lystra highlights a particularly relevant challenge for modern Christians. When Paul heals a lame man, the crowd mistakes him for Hermes and Barnabas for Zeus, completely missing the true source of the miracle. In our spiritually curious but biblically illiterate world, even supernatural encounters won't automatically point people to Jesus without clear explanation.Following Jesus will make your life better, but not necessarily easier. The spiritual disciplines Paul practiced—solitude, fasting, prayer—build the resilience needed for the journey. In a society increasingly lacking the ability to handle setbacks, these practices prepare us for the inevitable valleys on the path to the kingdom. The gospel still grows most vigorously not in the soil of comfort, but through the faithful perseverance of those willing to count the cost.© Bentley Baptist Church Inc. www.bentleybaptist.org

We have a temptation to think that if we are living in God's will that we won't suffer, but this isn't always the case. Sometimes, God, in His sovereignty, allows us to go through hardship as a part of his greater purpose. Main Points:1. Sometimes hardship is part of the growth and development of our faith and spiritual growth. Other times hardship is a part of the testimony and ministry God wants to give us.2. God calls us to endure difficulties for his name's sake, knowing that His grace is sufficient and that he will be with us and sustain us through it all.3. Ask God for the strength to endure whatever hardship you are facing so that your testimony for Christ will be evident to others.Today's Scripture Verses:2 Corinthians 11:23-28 - “have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. Five times I received from the Jews forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, and I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers. I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.”2 Timothy 2:3 - “You, therefore, must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.”Hebrews 12:2 - “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author, and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”2 Timothy 2:10 - “For this reason I endure all things for the sake of the elect, so that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.”Quick Links:Subscribe to The 5 Minute Discipleship NewsletterDonate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group5 Minute Discipleship on Instagram

Enduring hardship with the perspective of heaven | God's glory, our delight

Gospel Spice

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 28, 2022 38:46

Stephanie invites us today to continue the conversation about depth of faith through trials and tribulation and hardship and suffering this side of heaven. She then moves to a glorious reality: Scripture is quite clear: there is a glorious inheritance that awaits us. Warning! This episode is particularly chockfull of Bible verses! It might maybe even contain mentions of some of Stephanie's favorite books- namely, The Lord of the Rings, The Pilgrim's Progress and The Chronicles of Narnia! She explains that Christian fantasy books can be a powerful drawing to point us to the reality of the perspective of heaven! So first, we discuss hardships. Hardships force us to decide if we're going to trust God or self. Trusting self can take many different shapes in afflictions: -        Plowing through and trying harder -        Swallowing your emotions and pushing through -        Crumbling in despair and despondency -        Blaming everyone -        Self-loathing -        Choosing to distrust God. Or trusting God. It's both harder and easier. It has to do with surrender and rest, and it does lead to greater delight in God through the hardship. If you trust God through your affliction, you will find yourself delighting in Him more on the other side of your affliction—and maybe even while you are still in it. If you have truly decided to make the glory of God your priority at any cost, then like Paul you can begin to see afflictions and thorns as blessings. Instead of recoiling, you can start embracing and maybe even welcoming afflictions. Don't go looking for them—Scripture says they will come soon enough. But when God, in His perfect timing, allows afflictions your way, what if we had enough faith to say, “God thank you for this opportunity to learn to trust you, love you, delight in you.” That is exotic faith. It's not your plain vanilla, slap-on faith that makes you feel good. This is exotic faith from deep inside the trenches. Resting in Him means knowing at a deeper, new, more profound level that He is trustworthy AND omnipotent. And then we start pondering our inheritance in Christ. A smattering of deep truth: Romans 8:17 - Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory. Ephesians 3:6 - through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:29 - If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Listen to the whole episode for the whole truth!   Let's be practical... - Reminder – there are listening guides for each episode. They allow you to follow with pen and paper, or with your phone to take notes from the app. These listening guides are part of the workbook you can download for free as a member. - Today and each GGOD episode has a listening guide as well as questions for either group discussions or your own personal time, inviting you to ponder what you heard in the days to come. - Today we are introducing a new feature which is a listener suggestion: about halfway through the episode, there will be a 30-second musical interlude to allow you to pause and reflect on the lesson. It's in times like these that we go back to scripture. What does God ask of us in difficult times? We are called, through the power of the Holy Spirit, to endure. Yes, endure it. Don't quit. Don't give up. Don't throw in the towel. Don't become bitter and angry. Simply endure.Main Points:We can endure because He gives us the power to endure. We can endure and still display the fruit of the Spirit: Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.We can endure hardship with the love of Christ in our hearts. We can endure difficulties while maintaining God's peace and the joy of the Lord. As Christians, we don't have to follow the pattern of the world around us that is angry and bitter. We have Jesus in our lives, and that makes all the difference.Today's Scripture Verses:2 Timothy 2:3 - “You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.”James 1:12 says, “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”Quick Links:Subscribe to The 5 Minute Discipleship NewsletterDonate to support this podcastLeave a review on Apple PodcastsGet a copy of The 5 Minute Discipleship JournalConnect on SocialJoin The 5 Minute Discipleship Facebook Group5 Minute Discipleship on Instagram

Hi friends! In today's Quick Inspiration Sunday episode I shared a few options for us to name this new Sunday series! I love your feedback, let me know what you think! I'm leaning towards "Weekly Wamba Jamba"--but I have a silly sense of humor, so maybe it's lame?! You tell me! Sunday-FUNday?! Or maybe I will just keep it 'Quick Inspiration'. You guys tell me! ;)  If you are new around here, here's a quick update--Every Sunday for a few months I will post a short episode with a scripture, quote, and song of the week for us to binge on! The songs, quotes and verses will be binge and meditation worthy, I promise. ;)  Ok, song of the week this week is SOOO good, I get so inspired every time I listen to it--and I listen to it a lot... drum roll, please... "Don't give up on me" By Andy Grammer--YouTube.   //"Don't give up on me" By Andy Grammer-- iTUNES//"Don't give up on me" SPOTIFY Inspiring Scripture: Luke 18: 1 NIV  - Parable of the persistent widow “One day Jesus hold his disciples a story to show that they should always pray and never give up.”  James 1: 3-4 NLT “For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.  Quote of the week - “He who knows others is wise, he who knows himself is enlightened” -- Lao-Tzo. Over the last 13 years, we have been through a lot of ups and downs in the chocolate business. My brother had to say goodbye to his family and go work in the jungle hundreds of times. My wife got food poisoning and broke out in terrible hives with no access to medical care. We've invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in to cacao harvest only to have customers tell us it was a bad harvest. And that is just scratching the surface. But two thoughts keep us going. 1) Fortunato No. 4 Chocolate is such a good product that it deserves to remain in existence. 2) Hundreds of cacao farm families depend on us for income and we can't let them down. This episode is filled with stories about times we had to ask ourselves why we should keep going and we share the answers that kept us from giving up.

Ness Wilson [https://pioneer.org.uk/] and [https://www.openheaven.org/] joins Anthony in this episode for a conversation where they look at some of her story and background and what God is doing in the church today.    Much of this conversation relies on a life verse for Ness, 2 Timothy 4:5 - "but you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry". This is arguably not the kind of verse one may ask for but Ness shares powerfully about how it has informed her life and ministry and has helped her navigate some really tough times.   You'll hear also a lot of guidance and some brilliant ideas from Ness about what the church ought to be focussed on in this time and looking forward to. We know you will be encouraged and spurred on by this conversation.   If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review? It takes less than 60 seconds, and it really makes a difference.
