In this episode of Swiss Money Secrets, Neal Weiss and Jonathan Tiegerman from Tiegerman Tax analyze what US persons can expect in terms of tax and economic policy as Donald Trump prepares to re-enter the White House in 2025. They explore potential shifts in estate and gift taxes, corporate tax rates, and the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), considering the likelihood of extensions or changes to existing provisions. With a focus on estate planning and wealth preservation, the discussion covers strategies such as gift tax planning, charitable giving, and the impact of these changes on both domestic and offshore investments. The episode also looks at market reactions to the election, such as the strengthening of the US dollar, possible interest rate reductions, and the implications of Trump's "America First" policies for the broader economic landscape. For anyone aiming to safeguard their wealth, this episode provides a comprehensive overview of what may lie ahead and offers strategies to adapt to an evolving tax environment. Discover why Switzerland is a safe haven for hardworking Americans seeking to protect their assets from risks like currency devaluation, frivolous lawsuits, market volatility, and lack of privacy protection. There are three methods for property identification. The three-property rule allows the taxpayer to identify up to three replacement properties of any aggregate fair market value. This method is generally used when there is a reasonable assurance that a suitable single property can be identified and acquired. The 200% rule allows a taxpayer to identify unlimited replacement properties up to 200% of fair market value of the relinquished property. Taxpayers utilizing this method are typically seeking portfolio diversification. The 95% rule allows taxpayers to identify an infinite number of properties without regard to fair market value. However, the taxpayer MUST acquire at least 95% of the value of properties specified.

Aaron Newell is the Senior Tax Manager at Delap LLP. He joins Jared Siegel to discuss tax management and estate planning. Here are a few highlights from their conversation: Jared asks Aaron how he stays up to date with the rules, regulations, and planning opportunities of the frequently-changing tax laws. “With today’s age of technology, there’s always a lot of information available at our fingertips, and [staying up to date] requires a continuous investment [of time] in researching and figuring out how [the research] applies to your client,” Aaron replies. When it comes to strategic tax planning, clients usually fall into one of two categories: proactive or reactive. The services that Aaron and his department provide are largely dependent on which category the client falls into, but they generally try to go beyond what is required of them, with their client’s best interest at heart. Disappointment is a common emotion that heirs feel when a family member passes away and assets are distributed, Jared says. He asks Aaron how he minimizes disappointment in assisting families with estate planning. Communication and clarification are essential to the process, Aaron shares.  Aaron often has clients in their forties to fifties who have taxable estates but don’t necessarily understand why they should be addressing it urgency.   Aaron explains how changing one’s residency affects their tax plan. One factor that largely influences a client’s decision to change residencies is the opinions of family members, he shares.  If you want to have a value-centered, goal-driven tax plan, you must factor in a variety of different things, including tax expense management. Jared reveals why some clients may choose proximity to their family members over saving money when it comes to changing residencies. Resources Aaron Newell on LinkedIn  DelapCPA.com

Thanks for listening to this seventh episode of the Fields of Success podcast. The purpose of this episode, like all episodes, is to provide value for small business owners in rural Ontario. For this episode, I welcomed Bud Arnold, CPA, CA, MAcc. Bud is a Senior Tax Manager with Baker Tilly Guelph Wellington Dufferin. In this episode, Bud and I discuss some of the changes that were brought about with tax laws enacted in 2018, specifically passive income in a Canadian Controlled Private Corporation (CCPC). To begin, we touch on the relevance of this information for all small business owners, even those not incorporated. We then go over some terms related to the topic and Bud defines them. After this we move into some more specifics such as how aggregate investment income and adjusted aggregate investment income are calculated and how this is used to calculate a possible clawback of the small business deduction for CCPCs. We then move on to discuss some practical steps an owner can possibly take to minimize their AAII, things which ought to be considered as part of a thorough financial planning process. As noted, this episode is not individual tax advice, which can only be given after a tax professional knows your situation, so we encourage listeners to discuss this topic with their tax professionals. I spent 10 years in higher education, with eight of those years at The Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio. One of the great benefits of being a professor is seeing your students graduate and start developing wonderful careers. Today, I’m excited to be joined by one of my former students, Ashley Matthews, Senior Tax Manager at Rea & Associates. A constant struggle in public accounting is that work is always being added, but never subtracted – and this issue was exacerbated by the economic downturn in 2008. Public accounting practices became leaner and hiring slowed down to a crawl. The result is a gap in experienced senior managers, because there were so few new hires 5-8 years ago. CPAs rising in the industry need to be adaptable and maintain an open line of communication with the people they work for, in addition to their clients. “I found that you have to be stern and you have to mean what you say in order to be taken seriously. People have a tendency to pile on and see how much you'll take, and so pushing back is always appropriate.” People who are not in public accounting, and clients, may not think of the word adaptability and CPA in the same sentence, but CPAs must be adaptable to everyday occurrences in order to be successful. If you're not adapting, you may be way too rigid and start losing clients and business. “This definitely is not a profession for someone who wants to come in and sit at their desk and have their day planned out and be predictable and get their to-do list done every day and punch the clock and go home.” CPAs like Ashley, who are often Millennials, are fighting the stereotype of an awkward business person chained to a desk counting beans. At Rea & Associates, they want clients to view them as trusted business advisors who understand all aspects of the clients’ businesses so that they can help the clients improve their businesses. Ashley and her associates are trying to break the CPA mold not only in the eyes of the outside world, but also in the eyes of their clients. “We're working, especially here at Rey, for our clients to view us as their trusted business advisor.” The role of a trusted business advisor is changing, and that’s why CPAs are providing excellent value to the firm and to the client when they’re able to adapt. Ashley discussed what her ideal public accounting firm will look like in the future. A successful firm will: embrace changing technology be transparent about partner succession and upward mobility with its employees be smart about the work that they do and when they do it realize that the best decisions and some of the best relationships are made when CPAs are out from behind their desk and really talking to people “If you're doing the same thing today as you were doing three years ago, then you're missing the boat.” I really enjoyed talking to my former student Ashley, and she offered an enlightening glimpse into the minds of a hungry generation of young professionals who are currently working their way up the ladder, in every industry. I expect we’ll be learning more about communication, technology and business relationships from Partner Ashley Matthews in no time at all.   Resources: Rea & Associates Listen to the unsuitable on Rea Radio   Production & Development for Improv Is No Joke by Podcast Masters   Learn more about your ad choices.
