Have you ever wondered why the rich keep getting richer and how you can join the ranks of the wealthy and successful? There's been a lot of research into this question, including by my good friend and guest today Tom Corley who spent 5 years studying the rich, which he then documented in his first book, Rich Habits Poor Habits. Today we're going to talk about why the 1% comma control over 80% of the wealth in the world, and you may well be surprised that if you're listening to this show, you fall into that 1%. Why the 1% control over 80% of the wealth The topic for today's show was inspired by an article I recently read article complaining about the rich. The author was upset at the fact that 1% controlled 82% of the wealth in the world. Now there's no doubt the rich are getting a lot richer and doing so a lot faster, and of course, this has been fodder for some sensational headlines and a lot of commentaries. Let me be clear…No one's hardship should be belittled. Becoming unemployed or not being able to keep up with your mortgage payments aren't just financial problems. They're social and emotional problems that strike at your sense of worth. But things always need to be kept in perspective. Some really interesting numbers emerge when you expand your view and look at the richest 1% in the entire world. So, how do the 1% cultivate wealth? That's what I'm going to discuss today with my good friend Tom Corley who is my co-author of our internationally best-selling book Rich Habits Poor Habits. Tom is a CPA, and CFP and heads one of the top financial firms in New Jersey. For 5 years, Tom observed and documented the daily activities of wealthy people and people living in poverty, and in his research, he identified over 200 daily activities that separated the “haves” from the “have nots,” which culminated in his #1 bestselling book, Rich Habits, Poor Habits. So what do the rich do differently?  Habits. The top 1% cultivate wealth by doing certain things: Read to Learn Every Day — 88% of the rich in my Rich Habits Study read 30 minutes or more every day to learn. Deliberate Practice — 69% of the rich in my study practiced some specific skill for two or more hours every day.  Pursue Long-Term Goals or a Dream — 70% of the rich in my study pursued some long-term goal or some dream. Focus on Daily Goals — 62% of the rich in my study focused on their daily goals. Save — 94% of the rich in my study saved 20% or more of their income every year. Be Frugal with Your Money — 67% of the rich in my study were frugal with their money. Forge Rich Relationships — 68% of the rich in my study forged relationships with other upbeat, success-minded people. Volunteer — 72% of the rich in my study volunteered 5 hours or more a month. 5 AM Club — 44% of the rich in my study woke up 3 or more hours before they began their workday to pursue dreams, and goals, read, be productive, etc. Become a Decision-Maker at Work — 91% of the rich in my study were a decision-maker where they worked. Do Work You At Least Like — 86% of the rich in my study liked what they did for a living. The Bottom Line. Everyone wants to be on top of the mountain, but few are willing to make the climb. The 1% control 82% of the wealth because the 1% are willing to climb the mountain. If you want to be one of the 1%, you need to start climbing. I was reading a blog written by my good friend Tom Corley the other day and it was about success, and it made me think about success, what it means and how you achieve it. Now, if you're a regular listener to my podcast, you know we mainly talk about property, but if you think about it, property is just the vehicle you're using to achieve your own success - be it financial success or wealth or prosperity. The only person that can answer the question “what does success mean” is you. While I'm neither able nor willing to prescribe the ultimate definition of success, as this is not possible, I do want to spend a little bit of time talking about it on this podcast with Mark Creedon so that by the end of today show you'll figure out what's important to you and you'll have some key steps to help you achieve success in life property, business, your personal life or whatever. How Do You Know You've Achieved Success? Success can't be summed up in one sentence and there are different forms of success and that's what I'd like to chat about today with Mark Creedon, founder and CEO of Business Accelerator mastermind. I believe it is very important that one knows how to define success in life so you can be happy. As I was thinking about what we'd chat about I realized there are a number of different types of success. And I came to the conclusion you can focus on one type or you could pursue multiple types. Financial Success When you have enough wealth to meet your needs and your wants, that's financial success. Family Success When your kids know their parents love them, they will run through a brick wall for their parents. They'll do their homework, try to get good grades, take out the garbage, help out around the house, etc. That's family success. Health Success Exercising every day, eating healthy, moderating your consumption of alcohol and junk food, all lead to being healthy. When you are healthy, that's health success. Career Success Liking or loving what you do for a living, while earning the money you need to meet your needs/wants, fuels you to do your best at work. Doing your best and feeling fulfilled at whatever it is you do for a living is career success. Social Circle Success Everyone has an inner circle. When those people in your inner circle – family, friends and work colleagues are people you love, like, or care deeply about, that's social success. Mental Success When your mind is clear, calm, optimistic, upbeat, and not consumed with stress, that's mental success. Fulfillment Success Short-term happiness is anything you do that creates instant gratification. This type of happiness goes away quickly. Fulfillment, however, is long-term happiness. Fulfillment Success means feeling fulfilled in most aspects of your life: financial, family, health, career, social circle, and mental. This is the most likely the success everyone seeks. So let's talk a bit more about Success As we've said there are many different definitions of success. And not all of these will resonate with everyone, but chances are at least a few of them will. Success is always doing your best. Success can be achieved when you try your best in all aspects of everything you do, even if that doesn't lead to big results. Success is setting concrete goals. Be realistic and concrete when setting goals. Success does not come from setting abstract goals. If you know where you're heading, that is a success in itself. Success is having a place to call home. Home is where your heart soars. You are always successful when you can call a place home. Home doesn't have to be a specific structure. It can be a country, a city, or even a person. Success is understanding the difference between need and want. If you can meet your monthly obligations and fulfill your basic needs, you are successful. Success is believing you can. If you believe you can, you will succeed. Success is remembering to balance work with passion. Work without passion creates undue stress and empty achievements. Focus on what excites you. If you're happy at your job, that's great. However, even if you aren't, you can balance your formal job with hobbies or volunteer work you're passionate about. Success is taking care of your needs. Remember to put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others. Self-care is essential if you want to have any meaningful impact on the world around you. Success is learning that you sometimes have to say no. Success only comes with a balanced life. Part of balance is learning to say no. Success is knowing your life is filled with abundance. Love, health, friends, family…life is filled with abundance. Recognizing this is an important step to feeling grateful for all life has given you. If you can feel this, you are already experiencing success. Success is understanding you cannot keep what you don't give away. You will only succeed if you help others succeed. Learning to give instead of always take is part of creating a world we all want to live in. Success is overcoming fear. Conquering a fear makes you feel invincible. Even if it's confronting just one small fear each week, that is certainly something to feel proud of. Success is learning something new each day. Successful people understand that learning never stops. Take time each day to converse with someone with opposing views, read an interesting article on a topic you know little about, or watch a TED talk on new research. Success is learning that losing a few battles can help you win a war. Successful people choose their battles wisely. When you know which battles will ultimately help you achieve your goals, you will be successful. Success is loving and being loved back. Opening your heart to others is difficult and can produce fear. Having the courage to love and accept love from others is a step toward a fulfilling life and great success. Success is standing your ground when you believe in something. Successful people never give up on things they believe with all their hearts. Success is not giving up. Perseverance creates grit, and grit achieves success. Even if it takes years to achieve a goal, persisting is key if you want success. Success is celebrating small victories. Anytime a goal is reached, or an obstacle is overcome, take time to celebrate, even if it's something small. Success is never letting a disability hold you back. Disabilities do not define a person's success. The body and mind will compensate. Just because you can't do absolutely everything doesn't mean you can't do something. Do what your body and mind allow and always push yourself. Success is understanding that you control your destiny. Your destiny is controlled by you and you alone. Take responsibility for your actions and their consequences and you'll find that you naturally become more successful. The Bottom Line Success can be defined in many ways. If you are experiencing happiness, love, or adventure at this moment, you've already found success. Keep it up. In this interview we talk about some of the core, keystone habits that can set you up for success, wealth, and a rich life. We dive into the neuroscience of habits, what's going on in your body/brain as you're forming new habits and so much more. Since Jess and I bought our first home down the South Coast of New South Wales in 2015, I have been an avid listener of Michael's podcast and follow a lot of his advice and commentary through his online content. One of the best things about Michael is how he cuts through the noise and dispels a lot of myths surrounding property affordability in Australia. Whether it be the goal of attaining property or in fact anything in life, Michael is a firm believer that your mindset is catalyst to achievement. Michael co-wrote 'Rich Habits, Poor Habits' with Tom Corley which analyses the psychology behind our decisions and why some of us make better decisions than others. A great read! Jess and I made a short term sacrifice of getting out of Sydney and buying a cheaper property. This ensured we got into the property market, kept our mortgage and overheads low and also helped us still save a deposit for our second property which we hope to get in the near future. This isn't a blue print but one of many ways to purchase property and in fact I have many friends who have purchased a home in Sydney with 1 source of income with some short term sacrifices. It can be done! In our chat, Michael talks about his path to success, purchasing his first property with a $2,000 deposit and how he has incrementally built his wealth over the past several decades. We talk about the market now, the fear mongering pushed by the media (don't get sucked in!) and how mindset is key to your individual meaning of success. "One of the reasons they call it 'the secret to success' is that people don't even understand that their habits are the cause of their wealth or poverty." - Tom Corley The Cheat Sheet: A goal is only a goal if it has these two things: what are they? Is wealth really as simple as working harder and working more? Consistency: why it's so important For 30 minutes every day, the rich do this: what is it? The best strategy to network with the rich, even if you are average or poor. What is opportunity luck? And so much more... Have you wondered what separates the rich from the not-rich? Is it luck or some closely-guarded secret? Or do the wealthy simply do things differently every day? Are there rich habits and are there poor habits? Our guest for episode 313, Tom Corley, has done extensive research and written a book on the subject. He says there are habits that separate the rich from the poor. In this show, Tom and I talk about what those rich habits are, how we can change them, how to network with the wealthy, whatever size your bank account...and so much more! More About This Show: Tom Corly is a CPA by trade who spent 5 years interviewing 233 rich people and 120 poor people. He analyzed that data over a 16 month period and came up with some startling revelations: there is no "secret" to getting wealthy, there are simply daily habits the rich engage in and daily habits that poor people do too. And the two sets of habits are miles apart. With the data he gathered and the insights he uncovered from his study, Tom wrote the book Rich Habits and launched his Rich Habits web site. On the show today, he shares some of the material in the book as well as his personal story of being wealthy as a child, losing it all and the impact that experience had on him. When Tom was 9, his family was running a business that had made them very wealthy. They were worth $4-$5 million dollars (quite a lot back then), until a fire took all of that overnight. Tom's family struggled to rebuild and he had to put himself through college. He worked nights as a janitor, and went to school during the day. All the while that painful loss from his childhood acting as a thorn in his side, urging him on. That loss would play a factor in why he undertook his 5 years of research and later published his first book. But the tipping point that pushed him over the edge was when a wealthy client of his came to him for help. The man was losing his business, everything he had worked for and he had no idea what he was doing wrong. He asked Tom for help. There wasn't much Tom could for him and he had no advice to give. All of his clients were already wealthy when they joined his company so he had never watched them grow and amass their fortunes. So Tom began to look for resources for his floundering client; Tom wanted to understand what the rich did differently on a daily basis. Not finding any books or other sources on the topic, Tom saw the opportunity to fill a gap in the marketplace and his Rich Habits brand was born. On this episode, Tom and I talk about those rich habits and what they are. Did you know 79% of rich people watch under an hour of TV a day? Instead, they are out hustling: they are volunteering at charitable organizations, teaching, speaking or networking several nights a week. And all of those activities are focused on getting them to their next goal or dream. But Tom admits it goes deeper than simply working harder and doing more. Rich habits are also built by our belief systems, or mini computer programs as Tom calls them. In fact, beliefs might be the "secret" to what's holding you back if you aren't wealthy. The good news is you can change those beliefs. It's a matter of awareness, and then creating a new habit to replace the old, negative one that is holding you back. And consistently doing so over a period of time, Tom recommends 18-254 days to create a new habit. There's plenty more of those nuggets in this episode! Tom was an awesome guest who provides insightful how-tos on building your rich habits every day, networking with the wealthy on your way to the top and creating something he calls opportunity luck. Have a listen and then starting shifting those daily habits into rich habits! We'll see you next time. THANKS TOM!
