Mark Inkrott stopped by Armed & Generous to talk about his time in the NFL, his passion for agriculture, the value of hard work and how he got involved with the hunger crisis. Mark was drafted by the Carolina Panthers then played for the New York Giants and spent one NFL Europe season. In his professional career, Inkrott played 15 games, caught 15 passes and scored one touchdown. Following his NFL career, Mark earned a MBA in Marketing and Leadership from Ohio Dominican University. We dive into a range of topics from his roommate and mentor Kurt Warner to my chances at an NFL career and then some more serious takes on building a career that counts along with his insights on food insecurity in the US and what can be done about this challenging issue. Mark gets real about what it's like to go from the top 1% of your craft in the NFL to the bottom of barrel in the business world. He bounced around and tried teaching and coaching. That's where he learned some valuable lessons that birthed in him a new, profound direction. But it wasn't until he landed in the dairy industry where things really started to crystalize for him in terms of purpose and passion. His next move was to start his own thing with an old friend with a continued focus on food management, agriculture marketing, and all thing related to the food supply. Within his for-profit efforts in the cooler management sector, Mark and team have spun up a nonprofit arm called Fresh Has No Boundaries to augment the work other partners are doing. For example, only 10% of food pantries can accommodate fresh veggies, meat and dairy products due to lack of refrigeration; something Mark is trying to change. One tactic he's using is the Park It Market that provides a best-in-class experience for those in food deserts to have access to fresh, high nutrient foods. With 42 million American's who are food insecure, 13 million children living in a food insecure home and another 13 million living in food deserts. This is a massive problem but Mark has his gridiron energy and is ready to tackle hunger. The Everyday PM: Project Management Principles for Your Everyday Life

Going OFF SCRIPT doesn't come naturally to most organizational leaders. We want to control the narrative, ensure ideal outcomes, script the conversations, manage the problems, predict the future, and win (negotiations, new business, market share, and more). But what if good leaders could become better leaders by doing the opposite — by letting go of the control, by going “off script” in their conversations and negotiations, by being present instead of rushing to the future, and by collaborating in authentic, empathetic ways? If your organization is like most, the old way of communicating and managing isn't working for you. Status quo is coming up short. It's time to master the art of business improvisation (“improv”)! Returning to the podcast is renowned speaker, bestselling business author, Accidental Accountant, leadership expert, and improv virtuoso Peter Margaritis to chat about his new book, Off Script: Mastering the Art of Business Improv. In what is his third book on effective workplace communication, Peter invites managers, directors, founders, vice presidents, and chief executives to redefine leadership and teamwork. And he teaches you the techniques he's taught employees at world-class brands like White Castle Systems, Cardinal Health, Target, Oklahoma State University, and Marriott. "Business improv is about letting go of your own agenda to listen intently — to be empathetic and open-minded in the present moment — so you can truly connect with colleagues and other stakeholders to generate optimal results." In business and in life, we tend to respond to others with “No, because ...” or “Yes, but ...” These dismissive and controlling tendencies lead to impasses, arguments, and ultimately failures. But when we learn to respond to others with “Yes, and ...” — acknowledging what we've heard and building upon it — we arrive more quickly at agreement and at breakthrough solutions for challenging problems. “Yes, and ...” is one of several improv techniques you'll learn from Peter Margaritis's Off Script! — a book that will help you build bridges, generate good ideas, adapt to any situation, nurture teams, and keep your anxiety at bay. Here's a sneak peek at what we cover: The importance of "preparation" in improv The case for "improv" in improving organizational cultures Practical advice based on real-life scenarios Making sure your virtual meetings and presentations don't suck Enjoyed this conversation with Peter? Welcome to episode 22 of The Everyday PM Podcast where I welcome Peter Margaritis, CSP, C.P.A. Peter is an improv virtuoso, consultant, coach, podcaster, and the author of Improv Is No Joke, Taking the Numb Out of Numbers, and his upcoming book, ‘Off Script: Mastering the Art of Business Improvisation.' Project Managers are improvisors when you really consider what we do for a living. Whether it's adjusting our script on the fly or building on top of new concepts that are introduced as part of our discussions with stakeholders, project managers have the ability to turn on our improv skills. Join Peter Margaritis, CSP, C.P.A. and I discuss improvisation and why this skill is critical to being successful as a project manager. A quick anecdote - Peter and I never met or had a conversation prior to the recording of this podcast, which was an experiment in how well we could improvise a conversation on this very topic. We go through some fun improv exercises that he learned as a professional improvisor and I hope you can takeaway something that can be utilized in your interactions both professionally and personally! I also encourage you to give Peter's podcast, Change Your Mindset a listen! Did you enjoy this interview with Peter Margaritis? After a stellar playing career at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, and then at John Carroll University, Artie Taylor has spent a career in coaching. A passion that exploded during his final year of college led to a position as a Graduate Assistant Coach at Defiance College, a brief stint as the Junior Varsity basketball coach at Cardinal Ritter High School (Indianapolis), and then to Wittenberg University where Coach Taylor spent 6 seasons under Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame member Bill Brown. In 2007, at the age of 31, he was hired as the Head Coach at Ohio Dominican University. Following a jump from NAIA to NCAA Division II, and after 7 years leading the ODU program, Artie was dismissed. After persevering through the struggle of the painful disappointment of being fired, Coach Taylor by his own admission, reconnected with his "why" in coaching and was given the opportunity to lead the program at The Wellington School near Columbus, Ohio. To say that the program has been successful would be an understatement. Since taking over in 2014, he has led the Jaguars to the state Final Four twice. The wins are secondary to the process and Coach Taylor is committed to keeping it that way. Please enjoy my conversation with Artie Taylor. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jon-cook0/support

Change Your Mindset
Ep. 26 - Ashley Matthews: Senior Manager at Rea & Associates

Change Your Mindset

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 28, 2016 46:24

I spent 10 years in higher education, with eight of those years at The Ohio Dominican University in Columbus, Ohio. One of the great benefits of being a professor is seeing your students graduate and start developing wonderful careers. Today, I’m excited to be joined by one of my former students, Ashley Matthews, Senior Tax Manager at Rea & Associates. A constant struggle in public accounting is that work is always being added, but never subtracted – and this issue was exacerbated by the economic downturn in 2008. Public accounting practices became leaner and hiring slowed down to a crawl. The result is a gap in experienced senior managers, because there were so few new hires 5-8 years ago. CPAs rising in the industry need to be adaptable and maintain an open line of communication with the people they work for, in addition to their clients. “I found that you have to be stern and you have to mean what you say in order to be taken seriously. People have a tendency to pile on and see how much you'll take, and so pushing back is always appropriate.” People who are not in public accounting, and clients, may not think of the word adaptability and CPA in the same sentence, but CPAs must be adaptable to everyday occurrences in order to be successful. If you're not adapting, you may be way too rigid and start losing clients and business. “This definitely is not a profession for someone who wants to come in and sit at their desk and have their day planned out and be predictable and get their to-do list done every day and punch the clock and go home.” CPAs like Ashley, who are often Millennials, are fighting the stereotype of an awkward business person chained to a desk counting beans. At Rea & Associates, they want clients to view them as trusted business advisors who understand all aspects of the clients’ businesses so that they can help the clients improve their businesses. Ashley and her associates are trying to break the CPA mold not only in the eyes of the outside world, but also in the eyes of their clients. “We're working, especially here at Rey, for our clients to view us as their trusted business advisor.” The role of a trusted business advisor is changing, and that’s why CPAs are providing excellent value to the firm and to the client when they’re able to adapt. Ashley discussed what her ideal public accounting firm will look like in the future. A successful firm will: embrace changing technology be transparent about partner succession and upward mobility with its employees be smart about the work that they do and when they do it realize that the best decisions and some of the best relationships are made when CPAs are out from behind their desk and really talking to people “If you're doing the same thing today as you were doing three years ago, then you're missing the boat.” I really enjoyed talking to my former student Ashley, and she offered an enlightening glimpse into the minds of a hungry generation of young professionals who are currently working their way up the ladder, in every industry. I expect we’ll be learning more about communication, technology and business relationships from Partner Ashley Matthews in no time at all.   Resources: Rea & Associates Listen to the unsuitable on Rea Radio   Production & Development for Improv Is No Joke by Podcast Masters   Learn more about your ad choices.
