I'm excited to welcome Valerie Rivera on the podcast today. She is the founder of First Gen Wealth, an RIA specializing in no shame, no judgement financial advice for First Gen wealth builders in their 30s and 40s. I invited Valerie on the podcast to help share her story of overcoming lots of barriers including race, family of origin, education, class, financial safety net, and much more. I love her transparency in sharing each stage of her career journey and how she persisted in finding a path forward, even in the midst of challenge after challenge. She is part of just over 1% of Latinas holding the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER designation, the gold standard of financial planning. Valerie is a member of the Financial Planning Association (FPA), XY Planning Network, Fee-Only Network, The National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA), and the CFP Board Diversity Advisory Group. She has contributed to publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Business Insider, and others regarding her expertise in personal finance. In my discussions over the years with people in the military space, it often comes up that it feels daunting or different to try and make the leap into financial planning when you might not feel like you fit in. It's a stark fact that financial planning isn't as diverse as the population as a whole, much less those of us who want to serve based on our backgrounds or communities. If you feel like you might also struggle to fit in or find your way based on initial or past experiences in financial services as a whole, I hope you can take away some encouragement or inspiration to follow Valerie's example and not give up. We need you in this valuable profession! Here's my interview with Valerie! https://1genwealth.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/valerie-rivera-cfp/

In this podcast episode, I sit down with Mike Hunsberger to learn more about his career journey across an Air Force career and launching his own RIA, Next Mission Financial Planning. He shares about his early experiences with being sold permanent life insurance and high fee mutual funds which led him to get more interested in personal finance. Thanks to many years of his own good financial decisions, including building lots of spreadsheets to analyze his own military career analysis, gave him options to consider financial planning as a second career. As part of his exportary foray, Mike learned about XY Planning Network and came to their conference in 2019 where he met many other like-minded folks that ultimately started MFAA. It solidified his decision to make the leap and he finished his CFP coursework not long after from the American College thanks to their veteran scholarship program. When he passed the CFP exam and launched his firm, Mike shares how he felt like he had realistic expectations but even they were too lofty at first. I appreciate how he shared about the struggles to market to clients in those first few years. We also dive deeper into the world of college planning as Mike has expertise in that planning area including integrating military benefits into paying for college. Mike talks about his process for clients and the tools and techniques he uses to help them make the best decisions for their families. This is one of the most emotionally charged topics in financial planning so you won't want to miss his expertise! https://nextmissionfinancialplanning.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/mike-hunsberger/ https://ronlieber.com/books/the-price-you-pay-for-college/

In Episode #11 of NAPFA Nation, Zach Teutsch, managing partner at Values Added Financial, talks with podcast host Marie Swift about helping “progressives” build financial lives they feel good about. Established in 2017, his fiduciary financial planning and wealth management firm is passionate about supporting people who want to leverage their wealth to make an impact and live a joyful life. Setting the right goals and aligning those goals with one's values, he says, is the equivalent of setting the GPS for one's life. The principals and staff at Values Added Financial do not shy away from being real and are known for demonstrating their own diverse and progressive values in the world. This authenticity sets the stage for attracting remarkable and diverse clients and for working in a high-trust environment. The company also attracts and retains quality team members who share their values, freeing everyone to focus on more meaningful work and values/goals alignment. He is an active member of ACP (Alliance of Comprehensive Planners), XY Planning Network, and NAPFA (National Association of Personal Financial Advisors), three professional associations that provide methodologies, community, and resources for fiduciary financial planners. In a nutshell: Values Added Financial focuses on helping clients align their values with their financial goals. The firm has experienced significant growth over the past six years and has a team of six dedicated fiduciary advisors. They have found success by being open about their “progressive” values and attracting like-minded clients. Teutsch explains the firm's business model, which includes assets under management (AUM) plus a sliding scale financial planning fee (retainer), but acknowledges that there is no perfect pricing model. He believes in hiring based on “culture add” rather than just interpersonal fit and uses an interview process that uncovers emotional intelligence and reflects the actual work involved. Teutsch talks about reasons for doing advanced work in shareholder advocacy and socially responsible investing and says that being upfront about values liberates the advisory team and empowers them to work on issues they care about, such as racial injustice and social safety nets. He emphasizes the importance of building a team that represents diversity and brings new perspective. Special Note: In 2023, we rebranded the NAPFA podcast with a new album cover and series title: NAPFA Nation. We are shifting our monthly episodes to bring you inspiring conversations and key insights from leaders in the Fee-Only financial planning profession. Marie Swift, Founder and CEO of Impact Communications, will continue on as host, interviewing a variety of NAPFA members and professionals. You will still be able to find on this channel the 32 Mindset Mastery episodes with respected fiduciary financial planners and allied advocates who are committed to accomplishing great things as they master their own mindset and continue to serve their clients in the best ways possible. In episode #06 of NAPFA Nation, Lydia Sheckels, CFP®, CLU®, ChFC®, of Wescott Financial Advisory Group, shares highlights from her career in financial services, including how she became fee-only financial planner, and why she decided to eventually join NAPFA and raise her hand for service/leadership roles within the fiduciary community that would come back to help her in unexpected ways. While she set out to simply be of service, the surprise to her was that she learned new things and became a better financial planning practitioner and leader within Wescott, the Registered Investment Advisor and wealth management firm that would eventually become her beloved career home base. Sheckels shares: How participating in the fee-only community helped shape her career and created a profound sense of purpose How fellow NAPFA pioneers such as Michael Joyce, Judy Lau, and Marjorie Fox – among others – lead the charge in NAPFA's early days Why she is so encouraged by the fiduciary movement and the growth of commission-free wealth management and financial planning firms nationwide How established firms can help the next generation of financial planners as they eagerly seek to join the fiduciary community Key points: When Sheckles joined Wescott, it was “a tiny firm” and the term “fiduciary” was hardly used in financial planning circles. Today, Wescott is one of the larger wealth management firms in the fiduciary community and now the terms “fee-only” and “fiduciary” are used widely in financial planning circles, by personal financial journalists, and professors who are training up the next generation of financial planners, investment advisors, and wealth managers. In addition to the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors, the fiduciary standard is now the “mother standard” for an array of professional organizations such as Alliance of Comprehensive Planners, XY Planning Network, and the Garrett Planning Network. As NAPFA celebrates its 40th anniversary, this podcast with Sheckels is one you won't want to miss. The rapid emergence of artificial intelligence and Chat GPT specifically has raised a bunch of fresh questions about the role it will play in financial advice, and how it will impact the work and role of financial advisors moving forward.High-profile advisor Michael Kitces—the “Chief Financial Planning Nerd” at Kitces.com, Head of Planning Strategy at Buckingham Wealth Partners, Co-Founder of the XY Planning Network and face of the popular “Nerd's Eye View” financial planning blog—has an interesting perspective on the topic of AI in financial planning and shares it with us on this episode of the 401(k) Specialist Pod(k)ast.Kitces recently posted a blog titled, “Why Chat GPT is No Threat to Real Advisors,” and here he expands on thoughts behind why advisors should not fear artificial intelligence, but embrace it for how it can save time and create efficiencies.
Today on the podcast, we welcome back financial planning guru and Michael Kitces. If you are interested in what it takes to transition from a long-term wirehouse position to solo RIA ownership, what it means to truly answer a calling, and how to sustainably serve others without being self-sacrificing, this episode is for you! XYPN member Kaysian Gordon, MBA, CFP®, CPA, CKA®, founder of Kaysi Gordon Financial Planning, started her career at UBS where her team grew over her tenure and ultimately focused on doing financial planning for ultra-high net worth clients. She spent 14 years there learning the ins and outs of serving those clients and was the first on her team to get her CFP® designation. Seven years ago she was able to start a weekly devotional blog that was not finance-related, so she had the freedom to share her thoughts and insights. It later helped lay the foundation for her current niche of working with women of faith that are in transition. When she felt called to leave UBS, she joined another organization that not only provided a unique “practice run” at RIA entrepreneurship, it allowed her to build a client base she could take with her when she decided to go independent—a rare opportunity. In late 2021, she left that RIA and launched her own firm with the help of XY Planning Network. She's been growing quickly (60 households in less than a year!) and her clear niche has not only helped build her base, it's kept her feeling fulfilled. We also talked about how important time of life is—as she is a single mom with a ten-year-old daughter (who, by the way, co-authored a book with her!). Her life stage has impacted the design of her business and how she ultimately wants her life to look. There is so much to connect with in Kaysi's story, I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did! -Alan You can find show notes and more information by clicking here: http://www.xyplanningnetwork.com/360

Today, Ed is joined by Kathleen Boyd, CFP®. She's a Financial Planning and Process Coach with XY Planning Network, and a professor at Oklahoma State University. Listen in as Kathleen dives into the human element of financial planning, of what it means to navigate love and money. As a queer black woman who grew up in public housing, she looks back on the intimidation she felt early in her career of becoming an advisor to multimillionaire clients and working alongside mostly white co-workers and managers. Kathleen highlights the importance of financial therapy in anyone's financial journey. She calls it a powerful piece of the puzzle that shouldn't end only with strategy and planning. Failing to address deep-seated beliefs, fears, and desires is one of the biggest reasons even a wealthy person can feel financially destitute. Finally, Kathleen unpacks the phenomenon known as “singleism,” defining it as “the social and institutional discrimination that single people face simply due to their marital status.” She and Ed agree on the often unfair advantages that married people have over singles, and even over those in polyamorous relationships. They offer their thoughts on how both the government and the financial industry can fill the gap. Key Topics: How Kathleen got into financial planning (02:31) Advising ultra-high-net-worth clients (07:18) Gaining confidence over the years (11:58) After Wells Fargo and joining the Orange County FPA chapter (14:42) Why even those who make a lot of money can perceive themselves as broke (23:45) Love and money in the context of single people (32:25) Defining “singleism” (35:11) Myths around married people (38:57) How the polyamorous community is severely underserved by the industry (45:52) Resources: Kathleen Boyd on LinkedIn Connect With Healthy Love and Money: Schedule your free 30-Minute Discovery Call About Therapy-Informed Financial Planning™. Meg's Bio:"I worked in the tech industry straight out of college. Through the first Dot Com Boom. Aaaaand through the crash. When I got laid off. Fun times. In my 30s, I got bored with my work in tech, and I changed careers into financial planning. I also got married, had two babies, moved cross-country twice, went back to school for a graduate degree, bought my first home, decided (I mean, not unilaterally) to have my husband retire from tech and become a stay-at-home dad, and started a business (this one!).I don't know if I'd have had the guts to do all of that without the money and flexibility my husband and I both got from the tech industry. Which is why I love working with women in their early to mid career in the tech industry. It's such an exciting time of life. And the opportunities are almost boundless. But it's so stressful. And oh my goodness, what do you mean “estimated taxes”?!I've learned that if we are intentional and if we do the work, our opportunities in the tech industry can help us build that fulfilling life we all crave. What else about me?Wellllll, I grew up in Newport News, Virginia. I went to Wellesley College in Massachusetts, where I majored in Economics, gained 10 pounds (unlimited Fruit Loops? whut?!), and learned to banish writer's block. I moved to the Bay Area in 1998 and worked as a technical writer for 10 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, mostly in the software-security sector. ‘Tis also, it should be noted, where I met my husband. We both worked on the Engineering team at a small startup. After I changed careers, I got my Master's of Science in Financial Planning from Golden Gate University. I then worked for fee-only Registered Investment Advisors, back in Tidewater Virginia. In search of a home better suited to us, my husband, my two daughters, and I moved to Bellingham, WA. Julia the Dog—a sweet girl, if not technically a good girl—joined us a couple years later. So much of what makes me happy—hiking, biking, cooking, yoga, kale, and ancient minivans missing hubcaps—are part of the fabric of life here. For those rare times when I have a stretch of silence and time, I love reading books about European royal history, sci-fi/fantasy, and Anything Russia.I am a Certified Financial Planner™ professional, a Registered Life Planner™ and a member of the XY Planning Network and the Financial Planning Association."Meg's Social:Twitter- @MegBarteltLinkedin - https://www.linkedin.com/in/megbartelt/Music in this episode was obtained from Bensound.
Today, Ed is joined by Natalie and Dan Slagle. Both are CFPs and part of the XY Planning Network, a community of fee-only advisors. The Slagles love working with couples in the financial planning process. Natalie and Dan humbly embrace their responsibility as role models to couples looking to improve their shared relationship with money. They talk about the importance of each individual knowing their money story before becoming a couple. Referring to their business as a “cashflow-focused financial advising firm,” Natalie and Dan explain why having clarity, preferably through using tools like a balance sheet, is one of the key steps to transforming your money life, one day at a time. Natalie and Dan also share why they frame the journey to greater financial well-being as a dance, the value of knowing the couple's financial history before creating a strategy, and where financial planning ends and financial therapy begins. Key Topics: Why it's important to get clear on your money story before becoming a couple (02:43) Acknowledging emotional differences between the couple toward their money situation (09:35) Being a cashflow-focused financial advising firm (11:53) Getting clarity on your cashflow (17:09) Categorizing expenses (25:27) Framing a couple's financial life as a dance (28:25) The value of knowing the couple's financial history (30:25) From financial planning to financial therapy (33:44) There isn't a single path to financial security (39:00) Navigating financial burnout as a couple (44:09) Resources: Fyooz Financial Planning XY Planning Network Healthy Love and Money Resources: Healthy Love and Money Website The Couples Guide to Financial Intimacy Healthy Love and Money Facebook Healthy Love and Money Instagram Healthy Love and Money LinkedIn The Healthy Love & Money Way: How the Four Attachment Styles Impact Your Financial Well-Being (book) Stop Fighting & Start Talking: Gaining Peace and Perspective on Family Finances (book)

Hello Martinis and Your Money Listeners! As many of you know, I work with a team to produce one new episode a week despite running a business; and around the summertime, I always feel the need to take a little break from the podcast to refuel my creative juices where the show is concerned. So, I take the month of August off from airing new shows, and during this time, I replay some of my favorite episodes from this past year. I hope you enjoy hearing again or for the first time some of my favorite episodes of this past year. I'll be back in September with new shows and hopefully some exciting news about Financial Gym. Until then, I hope you enjoy the rest of your summer and I'll see you in September! I have been working as a financial planner for over 10 years now and while my clients are all unique with different life goals, a common question that comes up repeatedly is how to best save for retirement, specifically, should you utilize a traditional IRA or 401k plan, otherwise known and the pre-tax options or utilize a Roth IRA or Roth 401k plan or the post-tax options. This question has become increasingly important given that the Roth options have appeared in recent legislative bills, so I thought I would bring on the show a good friend of mine and an expert in helping plan for retirement, Michael Kitces. Michael is the Chief Financial Planning Nerd of Kitces.com, which teaches and trains financial advisors, he's Head of Planning Strategy for Buckingham Wealth Partners, which provides wealth management to retirees. And Co-Founder of XY Planning Network, a network of 1,500+ fee-only financial planners who provide advice to consumers in their 30s, 40s, and 50s. Michael joins me today to help answer the question, to Roth or not to Roth. For more information, visit the show notes at https://www.martinisandyourmoney.com/show-notes/episode433

The latter is exactly what Alan Moore decided to do. Alan is the co-founder of the XY Planning Network, a support network for advisors looking to serve next generation clients. In this episode, Alan joins Matthew to share his journey, including his advice for any young financial advisors looking to get started in their careers.
