A decade-long run of critically-acclaimed records would patiently and intentionally unfurl; a career cannon punctuated by emotionally-charged, introspective songcraft, frozen time capsules illuminating her own lived experiences. Nascent explorations in soul retrieval and energetic psychology through expressive arts and ritual performance. In September 2023, Marya Stark released her fifth solo LP, Weightless; an exquisite collection of songs soft and vulnerable, human and dreamy. She's also 1/5 of the acapella supergroup Starling Arrow with Tina Malia, Ayla Nereo, Leah & Chloe of Rising Appalachia. When not composing music or performing onstage, Marya Stark mentors artists and women. She teaches courses in The Art of Voice, Cultivation of the Muse, and songcraft. Y'all, for a long time now, I've listened to Rising Appalachia while working my garden, walking the land, and finding my peace out here in the woods. One day, I saw something new coming out of their work: a collaboration of women called Starling Arrow. This wondrous group (featuring Leah Song and Chloe Smith of Rising Appalachia, Tina Malia, Ayla Nereo, and Marya Stark) came together during the darkest part of the 2020 pandemic. The result is nothing less than magical. One of these songstresses agreed to come onto the podcast in the middle of her busy schedule—and I couldn't be more honored.Join Marya and myself today on the porch as we chat about the healing, connective power of song and voice. And if you haven't listened to their first album, “Cradle,” stop everything and give yourself the magic that is their lyrical storytelling.Episode Notes:Click HERE for Starling Arrow's websiteClick HERE for Marya Stark's websiteClick HERE for Starling Arrow's YouTube channel

The topic  is, “what do you listen to while you work with clay?”  There were so many responses that I won't be able to read them all! But if you are in need of some new audio content there will be plenty of ideas in this episode. I thought this would be a great topic because I'm always looking for interesting things to listen to while my hands are busy with clay. Unfortunately it has taken me forever to get this episode recorded so most of the following responses were from a very long time ago. Thank you for listening to THIS podcast. I hope you are currently working with clay as you listen. A short disclaimer: I will include a few clips of some of the great suggestions. I don't own the copyright to any of these works of audio but they are presented here for educational purposes only. Now that the boring stuff is out of the way, let's hear what other potters and ceramic artists listen to as they work with clay. I get free access from my local library. I can can borrow digital items such as ebooks, audiobooks, movies, and music. I think they raised the number to 10 per month during the pandemic! The selection isn't massive but there is enough to keep me listening. I have also started using an app called Libby which connects to the Indiana Digital Library. I get access through my local library. They have a much bigger selection but only have a limited number of each item so you may have to get on the waitlist for certain items, just like a physical library. One more free resource is Librivox. It offers free audio versions of public domain books. Lots of old classics available. If you are interested I'll put a link to some of these audiobook resources in the show notes. Podcasts Podcasts seem to be a popular choice for a few reasons. Most of them are free. Mantra music, or kirtan is a growing phenomenon in the west. Over the past decade, as yoga has become more popular, so too has kirtan. What most people who go to a kirtan gathering or concert will say is that it enlivens you, lifts you up– and then takes you on a journey inward. My guest for this podcast is Aleah Gandharvika, a kirtan singer who has traveled the world for over a decade with her partner in the kirtan duo the Love Keys. She's performed at thousands of events and festivals in over 15 countries – and has toured with other kirtan artists including Shantala, Adam Bauer, and Tina Malia. Aleah is also a vocal coach and facilities Bhakti Yoga immersions. In today's episode, we're going to take a deep dive into the mystical world of mantra… Our program begins with a short two-minute performance by Aleah, which, unfortunately, doesn't have the best sound due to zoom, but I decided to keep it in the podcast because you can still feel the deep beauty of her voice and transmission. Dr. Dennis Mckenna calls psychedelics “tools for learning how to think.” In this episode, Laura Dawn speaks with Dennis Mckenna about how psychedelics can help us think more creatively. As Chase Jarvis says: “Our species and our planet face a new set of challenges that only creativity can solve.”  We are living through a time of rapid change where creative thinking and creative problem solving are now being called the most important skillsets for the 21st century.  Many of us weren't taught creative thinking skills in school and need to find new ways to tap into our creative potential. As it turns out, psychedelics might be able to offer us the kind of help and support we need to adapt to these times of increasing uncertainty and unprecedented challenges.  As Dennis explains in this episode: “psychedelics allow you to see connections that you usually don't see. Then you have an opportunity to come up with not only funny ideas, but great ideas.”  Dennis McKenna has a Master's in Botany and a PhD in Botanical Sciences and has been conducting research in ethnopharmacology for over 40 years. Dennis believes that “the entire biospheric community of species is conscious, and seeks to advance the evolution of consciousness through collaboration and symbiosis.”  One might argue that they are collaborating with us by teaching us how to expand the boundaries of what we believe is possible by teaching us how to think outside the box. Today’s topic is a challenging one. A few weeks ago, numerous allegations surfaced regarding sexual misconduct by two prominent male musicians in the festival world: Lorin Ashton (ie Bassnectar) and Nahko, who I interviewed on this podcast last month. At the time of the allegations I decided to remove that podcast from my catalogue pending an accountability process. To make sense of this cultural moment, I invited my good friend and mentor in men’s work, Ian Mackenzie, back to the podcast to explore the theme of sexual predation through an archetypal lens. On the show, Ian offers a mythopoetic understanding of patterns of abuse in our culture specifically through the archetype of the Addicted Lover. We discuss restorative justice and the challenges of applying it to cases like this. We talk about our modern lack of the village, and the importance of initiating young men to understand the consequences of their actions. We discuss Cancel Culture as a kind of exiling that doesn’t serve to heal the wounds of predation or allow our communities to truly learn from our mistakes. Finally we look at the parts of ourselves that we wish to exile and the perils of losing intimacy with our darkest places. This conversation is simply two men wondering aloud about the causes of and solutions to sexual abuse. This is by no means an exhaustive analysis and we welcome any feedback to our conversation in the Life is a Festival Facebook group. There are also two prominent women in our community, Tina Malia and Elana Meta, who have written very powerful and public Facebook posts on this subject which are linked to in the show notes. Ian Mackenzie is the host of a stellar podcast called the Mythic Masculine. He is a documentary filmmaker whose works include Amplify Her, Scared Economics, Occupy Love, and the upcoming film Love School about the Tamera community in Portugal. Episode 2-Common Misconceptions About Multicultural Competence Episode 2 Introduction This episode focuses on six specific commonly held misconceptions about multicultural competence that serve as obstacles to staying on the lifelong journey of multicultural competence. Episode 2 Summary The six misconceptions discussed in this podcast episode are: • multicultural refers only to race and ethnicity • multicultural competence requires only learning about the ways in which “they” (marginalized people) are different from “us” (dominant group) • that 3-credit course on multiculturalism required in all approved graduate mental health programs gives you everything that you need to be multiculturally competent • if you are a member of a marginalized group, then your life experiences with marginalization have earned you a Ph.D. in multicultural competence and • your good intentions are what matter most. Episode 2 Reflection Reflection Exercise It’s a good idea to sit down with your feet flat on the floor, your spine straight and body as relaxed as possible. Take a few more deep breaths and slowly release them. Now think about the six misperceptions discussed in this episode. (see above episode summary) Have you held any of these misconceptions? If so, which one has felt most true for you. What do you think might be the source of that belief? If you still hold this belief, what do you think would have to happen for you to reconsider the accuracy of this belief? If your belief has already shifted, what do you belief allowed you to open to a shift in this belief? I want to encourage you to leave a review of this podcast episode-but with one caveat. Topics related to multiculturalism can be challenging and have the potential to be upsetting. The purpose of the podcast is to encourage reflection on aspects of multicultural competence, particularly our own biases and assumptions. So, I would like to encourage you to consider a moment of mindfulness-being present to what you are feeling and thinking without overreacting-before writing a review. Thank you!

Reflections on Multicultural Competence Podcast

Episode 1 Introduction The intention of the Reflections on Multicultural Competence podcast is to encourage mental health professionals to reflect on and challenge the narratives we have created about ourselves and others through the socialization process and our experiences with power, privilege, and marginalization based on our many intersecting cultural identities. This self-reflection is the foundation of multicultural competence, that which is required to adhere to ethical standards of doing no harm and really seeing, hearing, respecting, and appreciating those we serve. I believe that this self-reflection, this understanding oneself more fully as a cultural being with multiple identities, provides the pathway for healing any sense of separation felt within oneself as well as with others. In the United States, race is the most challenging cultural identity to think about-and even more-to talk about. But if we don’t increase our awareness of the impact of race, we can’t transform the ways that we think and feel about it. To transform our individual and collective ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving as it relates to race, we must talk about it and even more, be able to sit with or stay present to what comes up for us without overreacting. Because it is so important to be able to talk about race, I’ve decided to begin talking about race at the inception of the podcast. In this episode, I interviewed CEMPSYCH, LLC facilitator and program planning committee member Dr. Mike Liker who shares his expertise as well as personal experiences with White Racial Consciousness. Episode 1 Summary • Introduction of Dr. Mike Likier (4:58) • Preferred cultural identification and perception of what it means to others (7:49) • Understanding of White Racial Consciousness/Identity? (9:30) • Experiences that awakened Dr. Likier to what it means to be White (11:02) • Observations of White Racial Consciousness/Identity as a facilitator of the Whites Confronting Racism workshop (18:05) • Vision for CEMPSYCH, LLC long-term continuing education program at CEMPSYCH, LLC that includes racial affinity groups (23:50) • Potential benefits of upcoming 3-day workshop (26:25) Episode 1 Reflections Reflection Exercise What is your earliest memory of an experience that awakened you to the awareness that race or skin color matters? Try to remember as much about it as you can. How old were you? Who were you with? What were you told? What did observe? What seemed to be the message about the way in which your race or skin color or that of someone else’s mattered? What emotional impact did this experience have on you at the time? What emotional impact if any does it have on you in this moment? How might this memory impact your journey of multicultural competence going forward? (32:20) Quote from Guest Dr. Mike Likier In discussing his understanding of White Racial Consciousness or Identity: “The thing that I learned from Dr. Carter that really set me on this path to liberation is that this process is developmental. We find ourselves where we are, and chances are, especially if we are White, we’re not going to be proud of that location. But knowing there is a pathway to healing, which comes through consciousness or identity development is the things that is available to us all.” (10:00) Resources Mentioned Multicultural Competence: A Mindfulness Based Approach Workshop October 18-20, 2019 CEMPSYCH, LLC CEMPSYCH, LLC Facebook Page  Dr. Mike Likier-Summit Psychological Services Dr. Mike Likier-CEMPSYCH, LLC Whites Confronting Racism Tina Malia Gratitude I am grateful that you have found this podcast. This is a must listen to podcast. Tina and I jump right into a conversation that seems so easy and yet within each story there are big lessons for all of us to hear. * Raised in the suburbs of Denver, her mom gave her the precision of a concert pianist and her dad gave her the freedom and compassion of friendship. She was raised as many of us were thinking that her path was to go to school, college, get married and find a career, but none of that resonated with her. * depression and its role in the development of her entire life * no mater where you are, you are not there always, just there now. * we have become removed from some of the things that inherently bring us peace. this is a story of a round peg that never fit into a square hole and she had the courage to find the place where she belonged. * seeing the world she was in didn't seem to feel comfortable, she picked up and drove her minivan to California to be where the people who wrote books she read lived and she met Jai Uttal and was invited to sing with him and join his newly formed group "The Love Pagan Orchestra". * Her dance with depression and the vibration that elevates us above problems and differences is why you want to jump in right now and listen to this podcast. --- Tina Malia is a musical visionary in the world, dream pop and sacred chant communities, who embraces the heart through original compositions that elate and inspire.  Her all-encompassing worldview and artistic perspective have led Tina to collaborations with iconic artists such as India.Arie, Deva Premal & Miten, Omar Faruk Tekbilek and Idan Raichel, Bassnectar, and Kenny Loggins.  Tina's prodigious talent is evidenced by her self-produced catalog of albums: Shores of Avalon, Jaya Bhagavan, The Silent Awakening, The Lost Frontier, Bridge to Vallabha and Anahata.   Thrilled to be bringing her musical inspiration for the first time to Uddevalla, Malia reflects,   “Music, through its sheer beauty, has the power to free the heart, uplift the soul and connect communities all over the world.  When we gather together to sing, dance, pray and remember our connection to life and one another, we are touched by the simple act of love moving through sound.  I can not think of a better way to spend my time than sharing this joy.”  Winner of four Global Peace Song Awards, Malia's music has been acclaimed by audiences the world over, radio, press and industry tastemakers, including Echoes' John Diliberto, Kenny Loggins, Jai Uttal, Bassnectar, Yoga Journal, Zone Music Reporter, Music Connection and Huffington Post.   Website: www.tinamalia.com.   to listen to and buy her music, go to:  YouTube amazon.com

A prolific singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and sound engineer, Malia expresses her radiant inner landscape through song. Tina's mother, a renowned concert pianist and opera singer from South Korea, was the driving force in Tina's classical musical education. It was her father, however, who bought her a guitar when she turned 15 and encouraged her to follow her musical passions. "I remember first discovering many great women of folk music - Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Ani DiFranco, Alison Krauss. Listening to them was basically how I learned to play the guitar, and it's also when I starting writing my own songs," says Malia. With guitar and backpack in hand, she began traveling the world and writing music, with her adventures in nature and spirituality inspiring her compositions. Not long after the release of her first album, the accolades winning Shores of Avalon, Tina met pioneering world chant artist Jai Uttal, who recruited her to sing in his groundbreaking ensemble - the Pagan Love Orchestra. It was through Jai that Tina was introduced to the rich spiritual tradition of Sanskrit mantras. "When I first started singing with Jai," recalls the Amida recording artist, "I didn't understand the power and beauty that is held within a mantra. But later, when I was going through a difficult time in life, I was able to turn to this practice and receive the healing that comes with the repetition of these sacred sounds. To this day, I attribute my sense of well-being to chanting mantra. It is so simple and yet so extraordinary." Tina's love of sacred chant is reflected on her 2005 album Jaya Bhagavan, and now again on her newest release - Bridge to Vallabha, where she includes songs in Sanskrit, Hebrew, Gurmukhi and English. She is joined by host of amazing singers, along with instrumentation such as nylon string guitar, Rhodes piano, charangon, vibraphone, lap steel guitar and cello. Tina Malia is a beloved pioneer in a growing community of people around the world dedicated to residing in harmony with the Earth, and expressing it through art, health, education and music. Her all-encompassing musical and spiritual perspective has led her to studio and live performance with a vast array of iconic artists including Kenny Loggins, India.Arie, Bonnie Raitt, Bassnectar, Deva Premal and Miten, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul & Mary) Peter Kater and Joanne Shenandoah. Tina's acclaimed catalog of self-produced albums include Shores of Avalon, Jaya Bhagavan, The Silent Awakening, The Lost Frontier and most recently, Bridge to Vallabha.

The Wigglian Way Pagan Podcast

We strive for Episode 125, and what happens? It Happens.  We have a pretty packed show for you.  Mojo got the chance to sit down with Anne Niven, the publisher of Witches & Pagans Magazine (and so much more). Thank you for coming on the show, Anne. We hope you all enjoy the interview.  We share a little bit about Morning Glory Zell and her passing. Hail and Farewell, Morning Glory! You were and continues to be an inspiration.  Mojo has had a few really great weeks and he tells us a little bit about his experience at the Shamanic Conference. Not only that, but GODZILLA was recently released and we were able to see it on opening night.  Blessed belated Beltaine. Ours was fantastic and we hope yours was too.  We have two events to share with you this episode. First, Sharon Knight and Winter are going to be here, in the Wigglian Theatre, July 24th. Contact us at thewigglianway@gmail.com for tickets. Limited seating so get your tickets today!  Mojo is playing the Sun Wheel Arts Festival June 27-July 1 in Central Alberta. I will be there too as your Mistress of Ceremonies. We are so excited and hope to see you there.  You may or may not be aware of who is headlinging the Sun Wheel Arts Festival, but we sure are, and you definitely want to be there. Damh the Bard is visiting Alberta from the UK. I believe that it is his first time in Canada. Let's show him a good time because I KNOW he will be showing us one.  On that note, our Feature Album is one of Damh's. From his 2009 release, Tales of the Crow Man, we hear The Cutty Wren and Hal and Tow. We conclude Episode 125 with Damh's The Two Magicians from the same album.  SJ Tucker has reworked one of our favourite tunes. Stay tuned for her new version of Snake Star Song.  Also, please welcome to the show, Tina Malia with her song, The Silent Awakening.  Thanks for listening to the show! It's all abuot the love.
