¡Y hoy no venimos solos! 🎬🎬🎬🎬 Música utilizada en el episodio: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xc1iYRrMBWk Contacta con nosotros: elclaquetazo.podcast@gmail.com Otras plataformas donde también puedes encontrarnos: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/el.claquetazo/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/ElClaquetazo_ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@elclaquetazo23 ****************************************************************************** Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. L'Homme qui tua Liberty Valance, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, de John Ford sort en 1962. Like onions and ogres, this movie has layers, but what do you expect with a film starring John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart and directed by John Ford? Robin's favorite Western, this one has everything, even for those who are hesitant to watch the genre. Ransom Stoddard (Stewart), a seasoned politician that began as a humble attorney tells his story of the early days of Shinbone, the wild and lawless frontier of the Western territories, and the event that would shoot him to fame. When Tom Donophon (Wayne) dies, he decides to set the record straight about this unsung hero who was buried with hardly a funeral in his hometown that benefited so much from what Tom did.Sue Matheson's Bookhttps://www.instagram.com/realoldreels/

The writer and filmmaker Scout Tafoya, author of the new book But God Made Him a Poet: Watching John Ford in the 21st Century, joins the show to discuss one of Ford's greatest films, the 1962 western The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, starring John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart and Lee Marvin. Made in the twilight of Ford's career, the downbeat Liberty Valance is an example of what we would now call a filmmaker's Late Style: a veteran director taking stock of their own legacy in their final works. Liberty Valance is a preview of the conclusion of the classic era of the Western genre in the tumult of the sixties, the end of the Old West as represented by Wayne, the cowboy archetype finally replaced by constitutional order and modern progress as embodied by Stewart, as a young eastern lawyer who travels west to the town of Shinbone, intending to introduce education and order to a lawless place approaching statehood, and is soon targeted for death by feared local outlaw Liberty Valance (Marvin). Scout has seen every one of John Ford's surviving films; we discuss Liberty Valance in the context of Ford's career and worldview, grapple with the ongoing question in our age of assessing the art of the problematic artist, and consider what this film has to say about the consequences of violence and the media's role in reinforcing the official version of historical facts. Many collections of Archy and Mehitabel stories were illustrated by George Herriman, the creator of Krazy Kat. SHOW NOTES KEY IDEAS:  Roy Jackson has the title "Master Hatter", but I would call him an artist.  About three years ago my brother-in-law returned from a work trip to Salmon, Idaho.  He told me that I needed to look into "this guy up there that makes hats".  That is how I got introduced to Roy Jackson. About a year after that I was watching "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance".  At the very beginning of the show Jimmy Stewart gets off of the train in Shinbone wearing a large brimmed, straw hat.  I wanted that hat and called Roy.  He did not know the hat, and without seeing it he could not make it.  He did not own a copy of the movie either. I searched the internet and found plenty of photos from that movie, but I could not find a photo of Jimmy Stewart wearing that hat.  I decided to go low-tech.  I sat down to watch the movie and paused it on the opening scene.  Then I took a photo of the hat from the screen of my television and emailed it to Roy. About one week later a perfect replica of that hat showed up at my house.  Unbelievable! I need a new straw hat for this summer.  I saw a picture of a hat I liked the other day and did the same thing.  Once again Roy had a perfect replica of what I was looking for at my house in about a week.  I knew I had to have Roy on the show right at that point! ADVICE FROM ROY: Make Up Your Mind: When I asked Roy when he knew he was going to make it in this business his answer was "when I decided to be a hat maker."  He believes strongly in making a decision and then making sure you achieve that. Right Person: If you are going to apprentice with someone to learn to make hats, take your time and find the right person to fit the vision you have in mind. By Hand: In addition to the equipment you will learn to use, learn to make a hat by hand.  This way you can get started with almost no investment, and you will always be able to produce a hat. BEST BUSINESS ADVICE ROY HAS RECEIVED: Stick With Your Product: If you are going to be a hat maker, then be a hat maker.  Master your craft.  Don't get distracted by other product ideas until you have mastered what you started out to master. PERSONAL HABIT THAT HELPS ROY SUCCEED: Roy gets to his shop early, every day.  He loves what he does, and it drives him to succeed. BOOKS/RESOURCES: The Hatter's Guide, or Scientific Instructor; is the book that got Roy started.  When it comes to a hat making business, this is the book to get you going. This week Shinbone is replaced by two more voices in her head/Kings Comics staff - corgi expert Lyn Ngo and comic loving hoophead Wayne Hunt! Together they save Levins from the complete insanity that is hosting an entire two hour comic book review show by himself (although they strand him for the last 50 minutes of this episode). Listen carefully for a very special cameo! Siobhan's a mum now! Congrats Shinbone (and Mr Shinbone and Shinbone Jr)! For the first week of her podcast maternity, Siobhan is replaced by the oracle of Serious Issues, the guy we always yell questions at while we record, Jim Papagrigoriou! After working at Kings Comics for more than 20 years, Jim is more than qualified to review this week's onslaught of number one issues, before leaving Levins to review 30 regular issues all by himself. Does Levins make it to the end of the episode without going completely mad? Tune in to find out.
