In this episode, Sean and James discuss the 1959 film Pork Chop Hill, which stars Gregory Peck, Woody Strode, Rip Torn, George Peppard, and many other future stars of the big and small screens. Based upon the 1956 book by U.S. military historian Brigadier General S. L. A. Marshall, Pork Chop Hill depicts the fierce First Battle of Pork Chop Hill between the U.S. Army's 7th Infantry Division and Chinese and North Korean forces in April 1953.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Devin & James are back in the Den to bid a final "ciao" to the TOUR OF ITALY series with a look at the violent world of POLIZIOTTESCHI movies! (or Eurocrime, for the pronunciation challenged.) Italy had a special touch with crime thrillers during their politically tumultuous "Years of Lead," and we go over some of the genre's highest points, starting with Enzo G. Castellari's HIGH CRIME (1973), starring Franco Nero, and Franco Nero's mustache. We follow that with Lucio Fulci's only crime film, the gloriously bloody CONTRABAND (1980). Then we get into the sticky details around the release of Mario Bava's underseen and underrated RABID DOGS/KIDNAPPED, and why two different cuts of this movie were finally released over 20 years after the movie was shot and abandoned in 1974. We follow that with some fun in Umberto Lenzi's THE CYNIC, THE RAT, AND THE FIST (1977), which matched up 3 of the genre's most iconic stars (Milian, Merli, & Saxon). Finally, we cover the influential second entry of Fernando Di Leo's "Milieu Trilogy," THE ITALIAN CONNECTION (1972), where actor Mario Adorf outshines hitmen Henry Silva and Woody Strode to give the most heart-pounding and heartbreaking pimp performance we've ever seen. We're sad to finally be leaving Italy behind (for now), but we closed out with some of our favorite movies ever committed to celluloid. Buckle in and hold on for some off-the-wall Italian mayhem.

Fresno Grizzlies baseball TV play-by-play broadcaster (and Episode 208 guest) Dan Taylor ("Lights, Camera, Fastball: How the Hollywood Stars Changed Baseball") returns to the podcast - this time with the story of one of the most unheralded players in pro football history.   In his new book "Walking Alone: The Untold Journey of Football Pioneer Kenny Washington," Taylor writes the first solo biography devoted to collegiate star and original Los Angeles Rams standout running back Kenny Washington (1918-71) - perhaps the best known of the pro game's "Forgotten Four" (the others: Woody Strode, Bill Willis, and Marion Motley) - collectively recognized as the first Black athletes to permanently break pro football's color barrier in 1946.    Of the group, it was Washington - a one-time UCLA teammate of Jackie Robinson in both baseball and football - who officially re-integrated the NFL by signing with the just-relocated-from-Cleveland Rams (he convinced the club to later sign Strode).    While Willis and Motley were doing similarly with the challenger All-America Football Conference (and later NFL-absorbed) Cleveland Browns - ultimately earning them selections to the Pro Football Hall of Fame - Washington has yet to join them in such recognition, despite being the first of any of them to achieve the feat.   Of course, there is MUCH more to the story - including Washington's prolific minor league football exploits, frequent small-part film roles, and local LA celebrity status.  By the end of this episode, you too will be convinced that Washington deserves a place in the Canton's hallowed Hall.

Nassar – No charges for agents in botched Larry Nassar probe The U.S. Justice Department says it won’t pursue criminal charges against former FBI agents who failed to quickly open an investigation of sports doctor Larry Nassar. Agents knew in 2015 that Nassar was accused of sexually assaulting female gymnasts. Nassar wasn’t arrested until 2016. The Office of Inspector General found that two former agents likely provided “inaccurate or incomplete information” when investigators subsequently tried to understand what happened. But the Justice Department says more would be needed to file charges. Nassar was a Michigan State University sports doctor as well as a doctor at USA Gymnastics. He is serving decades in prison for assaulting female athletes and possessing child pornography. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Tonight Los Angeles Sparks at Indiana Fever, 7:00 p.m. Tennis – French Open – Only 3 of women’s top 10 seeds remain The unexpected results in the women’s draw at the French Open keep piling up. No. 9 Danielle Collins lost to Shelby Rogers in a matchup between two Americans. Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep said she had a panic attack while leading her second-round match that she eventually lost. The 2018 Roland Garros winner said she “lost it” and couldn’t regain focus while playing 19-year-old Qinwen Zheng, who won 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.  No surprises involving top-seeded Iga Swiatek, however. She ran her winning streak to 30 matches by beating Alison Riske 6-0, 6-2.  The other two top 10 seeds still standing are No. 3 Paula Badosa and No. 7 Aryna Sabalenka. On this special episode of The Long Game with LZ & Leitch: You've never heard of the most important player in NFL history. In 1946, Kenny Washington became the first Black athlete in the modern era to sign an NFL contract, joining the Los Angeles Rams and breaking the color barrier a year before his former teammate at UCLA, Jackie Robinson, did the same in Major League Baseball. Today few people know the full story of the man nicknamed “Kingfisher.”To discuss Washington's legacy, Will and LZ are joined by Super Bowl champion and ESPN analyst Keyshawn Johnson; Newsday football columnist Bob Glauber; and Kenny Washington's grandson, Kraig Washington. The panel also talks about the NFL's ongoing issues with race and Keyshawn explains why team owners, who are almost exclusively white billionaires, aren't interested in hiring Black head coaches.Johnson and Glauber are the co-authors of “The Forgotten First: Kenny Washington, Woody Strode, Marion Motley, Bill Willis, and the Breaking of the NFL Color Barrier” — a book about the league's first Black players.Watch The Long Game with LZ & Leitch Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 1pm ET at twitch.tv/therecount. You've likely heard the names of Ruby Bridges, Jackie Robinson and Thurgood Marshall — the first African Americans to desegregate public schools, baseball and the Supreme Court. But do you know the names of Kenny Washington, Woody Strode, Marion Motley or Bill Willis? Unless you're a football fan, you likely haven't. And that's what Keyshawn Johnson is trying to rectify in his book The Forgotten First, the story of the men who helped break the NFL's color barrier. NPR's A Martinez sat down with Johnson to discuss those four men, and the legacy they left behind.

Kirk was in Memphis to call a game this past weekend and he shares his thoughts on visiting the Lorraine Motel for the first time. Visiting that historic site was overwhelming. Jason shares his visit to the motel as well. Discussion on the NFL taunting rules and reaction to an article suggesting that the rule is a way to control black athletes. Keyshawn Johnson, Former WR & Bob Glauber, NFL Writer - Authors of 'THE FORGOTTEN FIRST: Kenny Washington, Woody Strode, Marion Motley, Bill Willis, and the Breaking of the NFL Color Barrier'This book tells the story of each of the four pioneers of the NFL and all they had to deal with beginning in 1946. Bob had the idea and approached Keyshawn during the unrests last year to write the story of the men who were the first African-American NFL players. This is a part of history that isn't taught in the schools. Folks sometimes take for granted that the NFL is a highly integrated sport. Bob wanted to explore when the league first became integrated. Many people do not know Kenny Washington is the first black NFL player. The NFL played many games in the south just to keep black players from playing. Keyshawn draws the parallels to what happened then to what's happening now. Wonders how quickly the NFL would have been integrated had the NFL been as popular or more popular than baseball at the time. The NFL had to be forced to integrate, unlike the Dodgers who did it willingly with Jackie Robinson. The guys are pushing, along with help from the NFL, to get the message out there of these four men. Hopefully this book educates and show how far black players have come in the NFL.

Since he's based in New York, Jay couldn't help but ask about the woes of the football teams in the area, the Jets and the Giants. Glauber pays tribute to a man who coached both those teams, Bill Parcells, who says he's the best psychologist, even for writers. Onto his book, Bob gives Keyshawn a ton of credit in helping to tell the stories of the four NFL Jackie Robinsons who have been forgotten by the league.

On today's episode, Patsy the Angry Nerd and I discuss the Shaw Brothers film, Shaolin Daredevils (aka The Daredevils) from 1979 another Chang Cheh directed film which once again unites all of the Venom Mob, and the Spaghetti Western, Boot Hill (1969) – the third in the trilogy directed by Guiseppe Colizzi and Starring Terence Hill and Bud Spencer who reprise their roles as Cat and Hutch. Through no purposeful planning, we are finding more and more similarities between Spaghetti Westerns and Shaw Brothers films! Both of today's movies involve acrobatics of some kind – performance by the Venom Mob as they attempt to get revenge for one of their fallen brothers, and through the circus performers that are at the heart of Boot Hill. So if you can find these films and watch them before listening to this episode, we heartily recommend it. As of this posting, Boot Hill is on Amazon Prime. But do not be fooled by Prime's listing of Shaolin Daredevils under the simple title, Daredevils. The only authentic version of the film in question was found available at: https://classickungfumovies.com/products/daredevils-of-kung-fu-aka-the-daredevils-1979?_pos=1&_sid=f9b8d2684&_ss=r (The East Meets the West is in no way affiliated with Amazon Prime or classickungfumovies.com) Patsy the Angry Nerd and his podcasts can be found at throwdownthursdaypodcast.com. As the studio system began its slow decline in tandem with radical social changes occurring in the 1960s, the Golden Age of the Western genre itself was crawling to a close. Before long, the hyper virulent Westerns of Sam Peckinpah and Sergio Leone would take hold, while the old masters faded into the background. Before that, however, one of the great artists who helped to shape the genre would have a last hurrah in the sandbox he made his cinematic home. The legendary John Ford, having trail-blazed the Western genre for nearly forty years at this point in his career, would again revitalize his perspective in this latest decade by embracing the vital social movements of the day to shine a light on an overlooked aspect of the cowboy mythos. Woody Strode makes a singular impact as the titular sergeant standing trial for the wrongful accusation of rape and murder, fighting against a prejudiced system only a few years removed from the explosive tensions of the Civil War. This overlooked classic from Ford's repertoire tackles the themes of racism and recognition in a time when America itself was overtly struggling with the lingering effects of conflicts recognized within this film, the same unresolved issues which have trickled into our national conversations today. Sergeant Rutledge has the same majestic vision of the West as all the other Ford classics while maintaining a modern perspective to reflect the significance of such films today. With Strode's towering performance only overshadowed by the vistas of Monument Valley itself, this late-career Ford film is another treasured Western within his lengthy résumé.

Continuing our year-long theme covering the history of cinema, today's episode covers films from the 1970s! Following the civil unrest of the 60s, cinema in the 70s took a much more cynical view of the world, exposing the rough edges of humanity with the "gritty realism" that defined movies from that decade. While not every movie from the 70s hated the world in which it was born, the increase in original horror movies that were more grounded in "reality" than reliance on classic monsters, the popularization of disaster movies, and an abundance of vigilantes and rogue cops "cleaning up the streets" was clearly holding up a mirror to reflect the disillusionment of humanity at the time. While a pretty solid chunk of the episode is discussing the representation of vigilantes (as well as the potential impact it continues to have on modern society), we do also spend some time talking about some brighter spots of the decade that don't center around rogue "justice." We also spend some time (not nearly enough time, honestly) discussing a hidden gem that might honestly be one of our favorite films of the decade, Keoma!! As a reminder, these History of Cinema episodes will not be a comprehensive coverage of every single movie that was released that decade. It isn't even necessarily going to be the "top" movies from the decade. Instead, it will be more of a broad discussion of some of the advancements, themes, and highlights from each decade, with the various movies that we watched as examples. This series is also serving as an opportunity for us to fill in some gaps in our own personal film viewings (this series was also inspired, in part, by our Horror Movie Blindspots series we did last year).

As FX continues its broadcast of The People vs. O.J. Simpson, we got to thinking about the other trial of a fallen football star going on in Los Angeles in 1995, that of Rams cornerback Darryl Henley. Sports Illustrated senior writer Michael McKnight joins Joshua Neuman and Tunisha Singleton to discuss the incredible ways that the Simpson trial impacted Henley’s legal fate. We’ll also look back at the career of Woody Strode, specifically, his starring role in the courtroom drama, Sergeant Rutledge, a story that eerily foreshadowed many of the themes of the Henley case some 35 years prior. PLUS: Suge Knight, JFK Junior, Kirk Douglas, and house hunting with the present day Rams on this episode of The Greatest Show on Grass.

Donald Sterling's racism and punishment were all anyone was talking about last week - so we did too! And to supplement our, shall we say, spotty familiarity with athletic endeavors, we enlisted the help of friend-to-the-show Brian Lee West. Brian has spoken to us before about his theater work, but this time he joined us in his capacity as our favorite basketball superfan. In case you were under a rock (or completely overwhelmed by a little horse race), here's what happened: Donald Sterling, owner of the L.A. Clippers, was recorded telling his girlfriend, V. Stiviano, not to post pictures of herself with black people on social media, and not to bring black people to his games. Not only is this obviously racist, it's also pretty irrational; Donald Sterling's girlfriend is half African American, half Latina, and the overwhelming majority of NBA players are black. Including all but two of the players on his own team's roster. And their coach. Stiviano's Instagram photo of herself with Magic Johnson at a Clippers game seemed to be the inciting incident for it all. Magic shot back on twitter that he would never attend another Clippers game as long as Sterling owns the team. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver banned Donald Sterling from the association for life. The other team owners will vote on whether to force him to sell the team. Brian helped us analyse the situation, including Sterling's long history of racism, the LA branch of the NAACP giving him awards, and what the deal is with racist people who date and sleep with people of color. "Sterling has that plantation owner's mentality where you can enjoy the fruits of your 'property' - what the plantation owner considers his property," Brian said. "But the plantation owner doesn't want to get too comfy. Doesn't want to get too close to the 'property.'" He also wondered whether Sterling's wealth has lead him to be out of touch with mainstream society. "He lives a sheltered life," Brian explained. "He doesn't see what happens in the rest of America. So he's probably really out of touch and thinks that his views are still germane to what is happening in America today. " (While he was with us, Brian also told us about the newest exhibit at the Frazier History Museum, Gridiron Glory. It features a Lombardi Trophy, which we understand is an important prize given to the winners of a sports contest. It also features Brian doing historical interpretation as football star Woody Strode, pictured.) We congratulated George Clooney on his engagement to such an accomplished woman, and we spoke about the HRC's intention to focus on the South - a move that has many southern activists scratching their heads. And of course, we had to acknowledge adult website pornhub for doing their part for the environment; as part of an Arbor Day promotion (SFW link), they planted a tree for every 100 videos watched during the week. As Dr. Story said, "I feel like I've created a garden of Eden."

Bland Strodes mest legendariska filmer finns Spartacus, Mannen som sköt Liberty Valance och Once Upon a Time in the West.
