On this episode: Atari 50th Anniversary : Atari 50th – The Anniversary Celebration announced for PS5, Xbox Series, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC Atari is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and with it, the spark that launched the modern video game industry. It has been five decades since a small team in Silicon Valley first combined their creativity, curiosity and passion into making video games and hardware. The result of their efforts was Atari, one of the most recognizable and enduring entertainment and pop culture brands in the world. Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration takes players on an interactive journey through 50 years of video games via interviews with designers, developers and industry leaders, documentary footage, product design documents, high-resolution original artwork, and a specially-curated list of more than 90 playable games. At the heart of Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration are the Interactive Timelines, which combine historical trivia, digital artifacts, all-new video interviews, and playable games into one singular experience. When you encounter a game in the Timeline, you can immediately play it without losing your place. The massive list of games spans six original Atari console and home computer platforms and generations of arcade titles, the most ever included in a collection by the team at Digital Eclipse. For the first time ever, games from the cult favorite Atari Jaguar and Atari Lynx platforms will be playable on modern consoles. Behind every game are the stories of Atari, what was happening at the company, what went into the creation of the games and the hardware on which they ran, all told by the people who were there. It is a rare opportunity to get a rich behind-the-scenes look at the history of video games. In addition to presenting these Atari classics exactly as they were, the talented team at Digital Eclipse has also created the Reimagined series—six new games that revisit, mash-up and reimagine Atari Classics. Each of these new games is included in Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration. Atari is enjoying its 50th anniversary this year since it changed the world with gaming. And while the company already debuted some limited-edition working Atari 2600 cartridges, Atari just announced its 50th Anniversary Celebration game pack. The new Atari collection features over 90 games spanning over five decades, thanks to the Atari 2600, 5200, 7800, ST, Jaguar, and Lynx. Better yet, there will be six all-new titles when it comes out later this year. tari's 50th Anniversary Celebration will be available for the Nintendo Switch, Atari VCS, Xbox, PlayStation, and PCs. Many fans will be happy to see this release offer Jaguar and Lynx games on modern consoles for the first time. Atari has partnered with Digital Eclipse on the release, who's one of the best in retro game collections and emulation. As a result, players can expect all sorts of modern conveniences to make the experience as fun as possible. The company added over 60 minutes of exclusive interviews with Atari game developers and a bunch of never-seen-before images, assets, and other Atari goods that fans will surely love. While all the old games are exciting, you'll also love the six all-new titles “inspired by the classics.” According to Atari, those are Swordquest: AirWorld, Haunted Houses, VCTR-SCTR, Neo Breakout, Quadratank, and Yars' Revenge Reimagined. The older generation will surely appreciate the 4th and final game in the Swordquest series.
It seems Sony will be making a few other changes to go along with its newly revamped PlayStation Plus subscription service. The company announced this week that any game costing $34 or higher must have an accompanying game trial that lasts for at least 2 hours. Additionally, the notoriously anti-game preservation company has just launched a new game preservation team. We examine these two surprisingly player-centric moves and suspect that all is not quite as positive as it initially seems. We'll also be discussing how Twitch is exploring subscription revenue cuts for streamers, Sega's announcement that it will delist digital versions of classic Sonic games in preparation for the release of Sonic Origins, how Call of Duty has lost 50 million players in a year, and how Final Fantasy's creator has called out Square Enix for pricing a collectible statue at $11.6k. Finally, class is in session with Professor Ryebread in our Gaming History 101 segment. In this episode, we're looking at Atari's Swordquest series. We love our sponsors! Don't watch it, play it! In the late 1970s, Atari ushered in the gaming era! But throughout their history, the company had more turbulence than a game of Combat. This week we revisit their history and which games were the most influential on us. Live Pong and prosper! What do Atari and Chuck E Cheese have to do with each other? What was the first standup Atari game, and why did it look like it belonged in The Sleeper house? These questions and more are answered as we look at the history of Atari. News Stranger Things season 4 is coming, but we will see an end to the series after season 5 Berkeley Breathed's Bloom County comic strip will be coming to Fox for an animated series Make sure to check out Shua on the Saturday Matinee Podcast this week What we're Enjoying Jay revisited a 1955 Spencer Tracy mystery movie called Bad Day at Black Rock. This intriguing tale of a one-armed stranger appearing in a small town with a secret is sure to give you a retro story to talk about. Shua has been trying to view all the best picture Oscar nominees before the broadcast of the awards on March 27. Enjoy Games! In 1971, Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney adapted a computer game called Spacewar, created in 1962 by Steve Russell. The new game, called Computer Space, may not have been the gigantic success that the men had hoped for, but it laid the groundwork for their new business, dubbed Atari. Computer Space led to Pong, which found it's way across the country with eight to ten thousand machines sprinkled throughout bars and restaurants. Bushnell then took over the country and used their success to grow the company quickly (yet, with questionable business practices). One of his successes was the home console, which started appearing on shelves in the late 70s. Plus, Bushnell expanded his business ideas by purchasing Pizza Time Theater and began putting his arcade cabinets in Chuck E Cheeses across the country. It was a crazy idea that worked for quite a while. Bushnell, now just Chairman of the Board after selling Atari to Warner Communications for $28 million, hired an interesting (and not very well liked) character named Steve Jobs. Jobs had some innovative ideas, but had some of them developed by his friend Steve Wozniak in some pretty underhanded scenarios. By the 1980s Atari had become the fastest-growing company in the history of our country. But the writing was on the wall; the video game industry, and especially Atari, was getting ready for a crash. In 1983, shortly after their disastrous release of the failed ET video game, Atari was posting huge losses and other companies quickly filled the void in the market. Jay and Shua have some good memories of Atari games though, both at home and in arcades. And collectors still try to acquire a wide variety of their creations. Despite their shortcomings, Atari helped to create classics and inspire future generations in programming, designing, artwork, technology, and more! Did you have an Atari? What were some games that stood out to you? Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to podcast@enjoystuff.com
Manowar - Carry on 2. Stratovarius - Black Diamond 3. Blind Guardian - Spread your wings 4. Halloween - Eagle fly free Fuentes del programa: Wikipedia, Vandal, RTVE.es, Marca eSports, Mobygames, Libro "The Atari 2600 Encyclopedia".

Swordquest è senza dubbio la serie di videogiochi più figa dell'era Atari, esaltava i giocatori con un connubio tra fumetti e tesori nascosti. Wooooo! Are you hot, or is it just me? Episode 215 is on FIRE! We're playing SWORDQUEST: FIREWORLD, the second in the series of four adventure games Atari created in the 1980s that tied into a contest where you - yes, you! - could win valuable prizes. Only you couldn't, 'cause Atari torched itself and never finished the four games or the contest. But you know what you can finish? This episode! Congratulations!* *There will be no prize awarded. This time on the Couch: Mike, James, and Shée jump into the deep end of bizarre cross-promotional comic books with Swordquest: Waterworld! In the mid-80s, Atari put out a series of video games and corresponding comic books that, together, created a puzzle-solving real world contest. It appealed to everyone from children to tech nerds to that kid in high school who drew swords on all of his folders. Unfortunately Atari folded before the series could be completed, leaving several jewel-encrusted prizes unclaimed and a comic about the misadventures of a couple of creepy teenage siblings unfinished. We'll just assume everyone died, as is the Darkseid's Couch tradition.
In this episode, Alex and Will discuss one of their favorite topics video games. A man creates a game console add on to help with an affliction that affects thousands, a real life hunt for treasure is embedded in a game series, and a psychological experiment goes horribly wrong. One of these stories isn't true. Can you figure out which one? ********************Spoiler Ahead********************** GlucoBoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iO_0nKk7vk&t= Swordquest: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swordquest Bobo Experiment 2: Written by Alexandria Bivens

Casi.

We take a look at New Teen Titans #26, in which our heroes first encounter an earth bending teen named, Terra. Hub delivers a quick recap of the origin of Halloween, and Cory is a bit under the weather. Our hosts discuss: the difficulties inherent in dating a teen with an "R bird" for a name; Batman was a shitty dad; spaceship storage; underworld catering gigs; and Swordquest! All this, plus a surprising amount of discussion surrounding George Washington's genitals. Sorry. Enjoy! Enjoy!

The Weekly vmcampos Comic Book Club 65 S2E13 Swordquest #0. If you grew up with the classic Atari game system, you'll get a kick out of this comic. It's about recapturing your youth. And a radical sword.
Oh SNAP. There's a special person back in our lives. We talk about some random stuff. Gone is the news segment! Instead we just talk about what's on our mind before going to the topic - which happens to be on the old Swordquest contest. HUZZAH. What ISN'T in this episode? Besides talking bad massage experiences, the Hellboy reboot, Riverdale's Reggie-Gate, reviewing a heap of books AND debuting a brand new segment, we discuss the biggest news to hit the world since we all found out Prince Phillip had died. Plus we settle down for some #realtalk in the feature segment as we chart the highs and lows of the Alien movies and debate whether there's any future for the hallowed franchise. We're back! After an unplanned week off at the exotic locale of my local hospital, ATARI BYTES is back. And we promise you, this episode is worth the wait! First, we talk about the 1982 Atari legend SWORDQUEST: EARTHWORLD, the first in a famously unfinished series of games and pack-in comics at the center of a contest that also went unfinished, courtesy of the video game crash. Then, after the game stuff, you can hear my conversation with Chad Bowers and Chris Sims. (Thanks again, guys!) They are well-known comics writers on a lot of big things - Deadpool, Guardians of the Galaxy, X-Men, to name but a few - and are now writing an all-new SWORDQUEST - inspired comic series for Dynamite Entertainment. Preview issue Zero just dropped on May 3 at the sweet, low, retro price of twenty-five cents! My thanks to Kevin McLeod at Incompetech.com for creative commons use of his songs "Pinball Spring", "Take a Chance", "Reformat" and "The Curtain Rises". Julia is away this time around, but Drew is far from alone. Friend of the show Kaila joins in to talk about a town obsessed with spirals (Uzumaki) and the author/artist behind it, Junji Ito. Plus, some Atari legends (Swordquest), croaking monsters (Croak), pyschosexual murderers (Slasher), and one mysterious woman (Stained). Oh and there's an intern named Dan that helps fact check, but he's not really an intern. Julia and Drew are attending Chase Con next weekend so there may or may not be an episode, only time will tell! Jeremy and Benj discuss the history of Atari's fascinating, extravagant, and incomplete SwordQuest series with (literally!) one of the authors of the game's new comeback: Comics scribe Chris Sims.

The 'Blood is back, and Chad Bowers is the man planning the return of Image's first superteam in May! Greg got a chance to sit down with one of comicdom's foremost experts on 1992 to find out just what kind of Youngblood fans could expect with this incarnation. Could it be the ahead-of-its-time Liefeld original? The Teen Titans-influenced Moore revamp? The super-media-savvy Casey run? Or D, something completely different? Chad talks about working on a book with such an interesting pedigree, what type of boss Liefeld is when it comes to his own creations, his give&take with artist Jim Towe, plus a peek at another book coming up on the horizon for him and some old collaborators. Hi, it's me again. Today I am covering the final released text/picture label game on the part list, Brain Games, and the unreleased prototype game Frog Pond. Please check out the episode to find out how to find the clues to Willie's Fergquest contest; once you get all the clues you have to make 4 of them into the phrase that pays. I have extended the contest until March 24th at 11:59 PM EST. If you've already sent in an entry, you can send another one. Next week I'll be covering the Activision games Megamania and Sky Jinks. After that it will be Cosmic Avenger, Smurf: Rescue in Gargamel's Castle, and Carnival by Coleco; RealSports Soccer & Volleyball by Atari; Super Cobra and Reactor by Parker Brothers; Tax Avoiders by American Video Game and Boing! by First Star; and RealSports Football and Atari Video Cube by Atari. Episode 100 will feature a very special game, and I think it will probably be my longest episode to date. I don't want to say yet what it is, because I may start getting feedback now and then I will forget to put it in the show. I will give you ample time to send feedback, don't worry. This week I am looking at Swordquest: Earthworld and the ill fated contest that this game started off for Atari (SPOILERS). Very interesting stuff, please make sure you check out the links for great photos and even more info. Next week I am discussing Edtris 2600 and Sound X, both homebrews by Ed Federmeyer. From what I have read, Edtris 2600 is considered the first Atari 2600 homebrew cart. Upcoming games include In Search of the Golden Skull, AD&D Treasure of Tarmin & Burgertime by M Network; Frogger and Amidar by Parker Brothers; Swordquest: Fireworld by Atari; Sssnake and Airlock by Data Age; and Fire Fighter and Sky Patrol by Imagic. Got any feedback for these games, or any of the other games I've covered so far? Send it to me in text or mp3 form at 2600gamebygame@comcast.net. Don't forget, Rob from Player/Missile Podcast is very generously sponsoring a contest! He is giving away an e-book copy of Racing the Beam, by Nick Montfort and Ian Bogost (it is an Amazon gift e-book, you need to be in the US and have an Amazon account, sorry about that). The next episode of his podcast is devoted to Space Invaders; both of us will be playing the game on the other's system, and you have to guess our combined scores (without going over) to win the book. You have until October 6th, and you can send your guesses to my email address above or post it to the pinned post on the Facebook page. Thank you for listening everyone! This week's episode is about Asteroids and Berzerk, two great early arcade ports for the 2600. Big thanks once again to Willie Culver for sponsoring the contest for this episode, where he gave away an Atari Flashback 4! Willie is a great guy, make sure you watch him on Youtube at Arcade USA or listen to the Colecovisions podcast and the upcoming Channel F Files! As I say in the show, I should have split these games up to make it a little easier on me, but then the Swordquest games wouldn't have been on the same show, and that seems wrong. So it works out. I'm still editing, but I think this may be the longest episode yet. In the future I may do more single-game shows for games I think will garner a lot of feedback. Next week I'll be talking about Mousetrap by Coleco and Ladybug by John Champeau. I'm hoping my copy of Ladybug is here soon! In future episodes I'll be doing Blackjack, Casino, Slot Machine, Yar's Revenge and Haunted House by Atari; Grand Prix and Barnstorming by Activision; Death Trap and London Blitz by Avalon Hill; and Swordquest: Earthworld and Swordquest: Fireworld by Atari. Send your feedback in any shape or size to 2600gamebygame@comcast.net. Thank you everyone for listening!
