After several years of commuting from his home in Scotland to London to deal with his legal issues, he was finally ready to offer up his first solo album in 7 years, City to City. The success he found was big and unexpected with the single Baker Street topping the charts all around the world. But this easy listening gem was not without its fair share of controversy. For years saxophonist Raphael Ravenscroft claimed he'd written the iconic bit, something Gerry vehemently denied. Also, the song was kept from the top of the Billboard chart thanks to an arrangement by Andy Gibb's management to keep his song at #1. The follow up single Right Down The Line was also a big hit and helped City to City sell over 5 million copies worldwide. Mit seinem Song "Baker Street" wurde Gerry Rafferty 1978 weltberühmt. Dabei hat der schottische Musiker noch viel mehr großartige Musik geschrieben, ganz besonders stark war sein Gefühl für Melodien. Das Gerry Rafferty die Platte endlich veröffentlichen durfte, war ein richtiger Befreiungsschlag für den Künstler. Vorher war es ihm rechtlich nicht erlaubt, Musik zu veröffentlichen. Es gab noch rechtliche Streitigkeiten mit den Mitgliedern seiner vorherigen Band Stealers Wheel, mit denen er den Hit "Stuck In The Middle With You" rausgebracht hatte. Der Song kam 1973 raus und wurde als Teil des Quentin Tarantino Films "Reservoir Dogs" 1992 zum zweiten Mal zum Hit. Für den ehemaligen SWR1-Musikredakteur Christian Pfarr war Gerry Rafferty vor allem deshalb ein großartiger Komponist, weil er ein ganz besonderes Gespür für Melodien und Harmonien hatte. Das hatte Gerry Rafferty mit den Beatles gemein, findet Pfarr. Bei der nachfolgenden und New-Wave-Welle und Disko-Ära standen musikalisch ganz andere Schwerpunkte im Vordergrund als eine vielschichtige und ausgefeilte Harmonie. Das Raffertys größter Hit "Baker Street" überhaupt veröffentlicht wurde, der ihn finanziell unabhängig machte, war eigentlich auch gar nicht geplant. Die Plattenfirma wollte die Single ursprünglich gar nicht veröffentlichen, erst nachdem Rafferty und sein Produzent beim Label insistierten, durfte die Single veröffentlicht werden – Glück für Rafferty. Die legendäre Saxophon-Melodie aus dem Song "Baker Street" wurde übrigens von dem britischen Saxophonisten Raphael Ravenscroft gespielt. Später gab es auch noch Streit um die vermutlich berühmteste Saxophon-Melodie der Popgeschichte. Gerry Rafferty was pretty much a known element to music fans as the voice behind Stealers Wheel and the song "Stuck In The Middle With You," but by the time that song came out, Rafferty had quit the band, which had to shoot the promotional film (they weren't quite called "videos" yet) without him. The guy lip-synching the vocals is Rafferty's partner Joe Egan. Shortly afterward, Egan talked Rafferty into coming back into the band, and they managed to put together their contractually-required third album. https://youtu.be/OMAIsqvTh7g Rafferty and Egan split up again, and the legal battles prevented both of them from recording for three years. But that didn't prevent Rafferty from writing songs in the interim. And it's pretty clear that "Baker Street" was a reflection of his mood through all the legal craziness that went on. This is the cover of the 45 sleeve as sold in Italy. But while the song was a huge hit internationally, there are two pockets of controversy surrounding it. One stems from that haunting saxophone solo, and the other comes from the fact that, at the time, no other song had spent as much time in the Number 2 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart without ever reaching Number 1.
