This week on The Discourse, Cheryl and Erika wade into the political firestorm Premier Danielle Smith kicked off with her live address on Alberta's sovereignty. Cheryl opens with a scathing monologue on why Smith's refusal to outright reject separation has real consequences — politically, economically, and reputationally. Erika counters that Smith's move is about getting ahead of grassroots frustration, not fuelling separatism. Sparks fly as they unpack what it means to lower the referendum threshold, who's really behind the push for independence, and whether Smith is preserving democracy or playing footsie with Take Back Alberta. From there, your hosts tackle: Whether Alberta's “Fair Deal 2.0” will be an actual educational tool — or just more grievance theatre. Naheed Nenshi's fiery “just do it” dare to Smith, and why Cheryl thinks it's playing with fire. The Carney-Trump Oval Office meeting: why both hosts were (cautiously) impressed. Smith vs. Ford: two premiers, two very different tones on working with Prime Minister Carney. What the Alberta NDP's new federal opt-out means — and whether 89% is really a strong number for Nenshi. And a preview of three coming by-elections in Alberta: what each party's strategy might be, and whether the UCP will continue to drag out the timeline for Nenshi's seat. Listen now for a fiery debate on democracy, discontent, and the future of Alberta.
We discuss Alberta leaving Canada. Is a referendum possible? In what timeline could it be done? When the trucks moved out of Ottawa in 2022, our public discourse changed. Grievance politics thrived, and our political parties adapted.Supporters of the convoy splintered into different groups. They became very politically engaged in causes like the 1 Million March for Children, the Save the Children Convoy, Canadians for Truth and even a grassroots lobby group - Take Back Alberta. As the organizers' trials reach their end, we look at the movement's lingering effects. Where are the members now? Do they represent a significant part of the country? How do we address this fundamental change in discourse? To find out, Mattea Roach asked David Fraser, a CBC Ottawa reporter who's been covering the convoy for years, and David Moscrop, a political scientist and columnist based in Ottawa.Host: Mattea RoachCredits: Aviva Lessard (Producer), Sam Konnert (Producer), Caleb Thompson (Audio Editor and Technical Producer), André Proulx (Production Coordinator), Karyn Pugliese (Editor-in-Chief)Guests: David Moscrop, David FraserBackground reading:What is the ‘Save the Children Convoy' and What Do They Really Believe? - Press ProgressAnti-LGBTQ+ ‘Million Man Marches' Are Being Held Across Canada. David Parker is the guts of Alberta's UCP (Governing Conservative Party and he's the most powerful man in COnservative politics. Last week, he went AFTER Pierre Poilievre's handler, Jenni Byrne, accusing her of being a loser alcoholic and sending a torpedo into the side of the Federal Conservative Party. He's "demanding" a few things from Jenni Byrne and Pierre Poilievre and wants to share those demands here today. According to David: - Ana Poilievre is a political operative - Jenni Byrne is "bad at her job" and questions how Ana is OK with spending hundreds of hours a week with Jenni (Pierre's old girlfriend) - Jenni is a bully (cites examples of the allegation in his tweet and why she might suck at her job) - This current Conservative Party will lose to Justin Trudeau if Jenni Byrne and Pierre Poilievre aren't "removed" or if Pierre doesn't have a "change of direction." - He forgives Justin Trudeau (for provincial mandates:) - David encourages a full-scale investigation into WHO owns the conservative Party of Canada Fund and STRONGLY suggests Canadians from all parties and walks of life won't like what we'd find if we audited The Conservative Party of Canadas books - He doesn't like Stephen Harper anymore; tell us why. - Faith in politics (Dean hates it, and David doesn't) - Dean wants to know why Alberta is hurting trans kids - David's response isn't satisfactory to Dean - it's a great conversation. We hope you enjoyed it, Jeff. This is the first in a series of interviews with Parker - he said he'd "ratchet it up" depending on his response to this, so Surfs Up!
CHAAAAAAARRRRRLLLLIIIE joins me again today to talk about last night's (technically fucked) look into the soul of the Enigmatic Political Assasin David Parker - the man behind Take Back Alberta. Why we limit replies and block people - life lesson Charles' thoughts on Parker's tweets and David's apology. David's allegations he thinks fell flat. What he respects about David and the Idea that Jenni Byrne isn't good at her job. What personal attacks between politicians are all about. a David's intentions VS David's actions. The FAITH portion of David's politics? Chuck's thoughts on David's Trans policies and how the dean handled those topics. Why does Dean have a rapport with David Parker, and why he only speak to Dean in terms of Media Dean's thoughts on alcoholics unloading on people who struggle with drinking. We finish with a plea to have conversations instead of fighting a culture war for assholes.
Did you see David Parker's Twitter attack targeting Pierre Poilievre, his wife Anaida, and his advisor Jenni Byrne? The Take Back Alberta founder got personal, all but declaring war against the federal Conservative leader. What's Parker's end game? Is this a fight he can possibly win, or does the attack mark the beginning of the end of his group's influence? We discuss in this episode of Real Talk. 4:38 | Charles Adler tells us which part of our Trudeau interview most resonated with him, whether or not he thinks David Parker's days of influence are numbered, and what he makes of Westlock, Alberta residents voting to ban Pride flags in public spaces. 49:10 | Ryan reads more of your emails about our Trudeau exclusive. 53:25 | Real Talker Elaine is a paramedic working exclusively with Edmonton's homeless population. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Take Back Alberta supporters in the United Conservative Party arguably want to take Albertans out of the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and substitute an “Alberta Pension Plan” (APP). Given its possible long-term effect on the lives of Albertans, this should have been one of the more important issues in the recent election campaign. Instead, the Premier refused to discuss it at all, and now the provincial government is spending more than 7.5 million dollars promoting the plan. This means that Albertans don't have meaningful information about the proposed new plan. The benefit structure is likely to be similar to the CPP (although probably not identical), but the risks are many … Join us to hear Brad Lafortune discuss the specifics about how the CPP works. He will also discuss what civil society, businesses, seniors, and many Albertans are doing to come together to make sure CPP is there for all Albertans – and all Canadians – for generations to come. Speaker: Brad Lafortune, Public Interest Alberta Brad has worked most of his life on Treaty 6 territory in Alberta as an advocate for worker rights and social, economic, and environmental justice. Before becoming ED at PIA, Brad served as the Chief of Staff to the Minister of Labour for the Alberta New Democrat government, where he helped implement Alberta's $15 dollar minimum wage and set up North America's first Coal Workforce Transition Fund. Organizing, advocacy, and political action that centers on real stories and builds power are the principles that guide Brad's work. He is committed to building diverse, inclusive, and equitable networks with Public Interest Alberta to help shape our province's future. When he's not working on campaigns or advocacy work, you can find Brad running around with his brilliant daughter Maven and their dog, Rufio.
It's been six months since Albertans voted in the election and now the parties are facing a different question: What comes next? Is the UCP becoming the Take Back Alberta party? Does the Alberta NDP need an extreme makeover if it ever wants to win again? Guest host Jason Markusoff examines those questions with Keith McLaughlin from New West Public Affairs, Mandi Johnson from Crestview Strategy and pollster Janet Brown.
In what's believed to be the largest political convention in Alberta history, nearly 4,000 people gathered in Calgary for the United Conservative Party AGM. By the end of the weekend, the David Parker-led Take Back Alberta had taken control of the UCP board, and the party's most ardent supporters had passed several controversial resolutions. 3:05 | What does this all mean for Premier Danielle Smith and everyday Albertans? Max Fawcett VS Take Back Alberta's David Parker. David Parker's meteoric rise to fame in Alberta with his hardline Take Back Alberta lobby group that ousted Jason Kenny and they are setting their sights on turning Alberta into its own country. Max is the Lead Columnist for Canada's National Observer, and his values are diametrically opposed to David's. Max and David have been sniping at each other online for a solid 3 months as David makes a move to take over the Alberta government's executive (he will). David is a hardline evangelical Christian Max is not. David loves fossil fuels and gets paid by Oil and Gas employees and lobbyists. Max is an eco-friendly academic who wants a hybrid model of oil, gas renewable energy. With an E. Coli outbreak striking to the heart of the province, we're back for another Alberta Politics Roundup! We start by taking a look at the environmental situation in Alberta before moving on to the incredibly on brand appointment of a lowered standard "writer" to the office of the deputy premier's press secretary. From there we get into the E. Coli tragedy and the provinces inexplicable response to not just the outbreak itself but the affected families as well, particularly the arguably staged response of the premier. We then round the night off with the recent cancellation and then rebooking of a Take Back Alberta event important American culture wars before we pivot to some examples of politicians representing Canadian values, not imported American ones. And that's when we're happy to see the return of longtime guest Sarah Biggs for her take on the events of the week before we open it up for one of the busiest open mic's we've had in a while! Plus we now have merch that's available at www.abpoli.ca! If you follow Alberta politics, you've no doubt heard about Take Back Alberta. The group has taken over the United Conservative Party board, and claims responsibility for ousting former premier Jason Kenney. Critics of founder David Parker say he's a religious extremist, a misogynist, and worse. We ask him about all of it on this episode of Real Talk. 3:05 | Take Back Alberta...from whom? Founder David Parker talks to Ryan about his relationship with Premier Danielle Smith, his mission to control school boards across the province, his comments about women working outside the home, the so-called "climate cult," his support for the Coutts border blockaders, and more. 51:35 | Charles Adler has exactly zero time for David Parker, and he holds nothing back. 1:17:30 | Ryan and Johnny can't help but laugh at Kid Rock, caught on camera over the weekend. 1:24:00 | Mark Fuhrmann is an absolute legend. The Canadian, now living in Norway, just completed an 11,000km (!) journey in a kayak: nearly a full year alone at sea raising money for charity. On this episode of The Breakdown... This week, Leduc made the news for all of the wrong reasons, and we try and put some proper context and apply some facts to the hate filled rants that came out of the Leduc CIty Council chamber. Take Back Alberta also made the news with not a small amount of internal and external drama, the Hinshaw hiring and Un-hiring spent a lot of time in the news and in what likely comes as no surprise Alberta premier Danielle Smith made headlines with her outright rejection of harm reduction, so we take a look at what she said and what the evidence, and fact actually are! On Monday, May 29, Danielle Smith, the leader of the UCP of Alberta, seized the reigns of majority government power with the help of a right-wing antivax group called Take Back Alberta. Jeremy Appel, founder of The Orchard, joins Matthew for a masterclass on how things got so bad in Alberta, and how conspirituality played a key role. Following the 2019 provincial election win by the United Conservative Party (UCP), leader Jason Kenney, became Premier of Alberta. Since then, the province has arguably been in some kind of crisis mode ranging from financial woes to COVID 19 controversy (“Best Summer Ever”) to fights with doctors, nurses and Ottawa to name a few. Adding fuel to the fire, Alberta went through a leadership change in October 2022, when Danielle Smith won the race to replace Kenney as Premier. Alberta is now on the verge of yet another very important election featuring an even more to the right-populist UCP led by Premier Danielle Smith, versus Rachel Notley's New Democratic Party (NDP). The speakers will relate to the book they helped write, Anger and Angst: Jason Kenney's Legacy and Alberta's Right, which examines the chaos of the current UCP Alberta government leading up to the likely May 29, 2023 election date. This talk should leave the audience with a better understanding of current politics, ideology, and the “Take Back Alberta” movement. Speakers: Drs. Yale Belanger and Richard Mueller Dr. Yale D. Belanger (Ph.D.) is Professor of Political Science and a Member of the Royal Society of Canada, College of New Scholars, Artists, and Scientists. He taught at the University of Saskatchewan before joining the University of Lethbridge in 2004. Dr. Richard Mueller is professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Lethbridge and academic director of the Lethbridge Branch of the Prairie Regional Research Data Centre. Dr. Mueller holds a BA (Honors) and an MA from the University of Calgary, and a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin. He taught at the University of Maine before joining the University of Lethbridge in the year 2000.

The merger of the Progressive Conservatives and the Wildrose Party was supposed to end the split of the right in Alberta's politics. But while the United Conservative Party has successfully prevented another right-of-centre party from rising to prominence in the province, it hasn't stopped divisions forming within its own organization.Joining me this week on the podcast is the CBC's Jason Markusoff, who has looked into the rise of the Take Back Alberta group that has tried to influence the direction of the UCP from the inside. What does this mean for the future of the United Conservatives — and for Danielle Smith, win or lose in Alberta's election on May 29?As always, in addition to listening to the episode in your inbox, at TheWrit.ca or on podcast apps like Apple Podcasts, you can also watch this episode on YouTube. Sources inside the United Conservative Party say a faction's already organizing against Danielle Smith. Rumour has it if the UCP doesn't win big on May 29, she could be ousted as party leader. 3:00 | Are the rumblings valid or not? Veteran political columnist Graham Thomson tells us what he's hearing and what his gut's telling him. What does Graham make of Take Back Alberta founder David Parker's claim he "controls the premier's office"? And, with all this talk about Danielle Smith, is the media doing its job in applying proper scrutiny to Rachel Notley and the NDP? Ryan and Graham get into it. 40:52 | Thanks to the tireless work of firefighters across Yellowhead County, Jasper's power supply is stable, shelves are stocked, and the sky is clear. It's January 18th and we're back to talking about the "Just Transition" because that seems like it's all we talk about in Alberta these days... On Tuesday Danielle Smith falsely claimed that the "Just Transition" would eliminate up to 2.7 million jobs, and despite being corrected by, well, pretty much everyone, she has continued to double down on this ridiculous claim. Add to that the fact that Opposition leader Rachel Notley finally took the bait and also condemned the federal plan (that hasn't yet been detailed) to retrain workers laid off by automation and efficiency for jobs in green energy and it's been a wild, wild week. We also take a look at the partial privatization of EMS in Alberta, the recent win for Take Back Alberta in Jason Nixon's constituency and we count another few ways that Danielle Smith has played her base! Chris and David Parker he have not always seen eye to eye on certain subjects. As a matter of fact, they disagree 100% on some issues. That doesn't mean we should not talk to each other. These days it seems as though everyone is so willing to throw their relationships aside and turn their backs on each other due to not agreeing on things. Even worse, assumptions and accusations become the new reality that others base their own choices on. We need to admit that this is happening and take steps to overcome. In the end, our adversary is not each other, it's the anti-human ideologies and thinking that threaten our very existence as HUMAN beings.Jan 22, 2023
