Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's government is facing scrutiny after serious allegations were in a wrongful dismissal lawsuit launched by Alberta Health Services' former CEO, Athana Mentzelopoulos. The lawsuit alleges that government officials interfered with the health system on behalf of private firms. It also claims that Mentzelopoulos was fired because of “an internal investigation,” she was launched into how Alberta Health Services' contracts are procured. Carrie Tait, one of The Globe's reporters covering Alberta, broke this story. She explains the allegations made against the government, their ties to for-profit medical companies and what Smith's government has said publicly so far. Questions? Comments? Ideas? Lawyer Marty Moore takes us through the good and the bad of proposed changes to Alberta's Education Act. There is a lot in here that firmly establishes parental rights and puts some serious guardrails around gender transitions for minors. Parents will now have to opt-in to explicit sex education in the classroom. However, the Education Act will allow sex education to occur without parental notification during activities and in groups occurring outside the classroom. This means that explicit sexual material could be easily shared by activists with young kids on field trips, at assemblies, and in any group that meets outside of class time, and parents may never hear about it. The opt-in provisions will give parents a false sense of control over what their kids are learning.Alberta Government, Oct 31, 2024: Supporting Alberta students and families--Proposed amendments to the Education Act will support student success and well-being in Alberta schools.CBC, Oct 31, 2024: Alberta tables bills on transgender youth health care, students' pronouns, opt-in sex educationJustice Centre Achievement, Oct 19, 2019: Challenging the constitutionality of secrecy in schoolsJustice Centre, Jan 18, 2019: Affidavit of B.B.Justice Centre, Jun 26, 2019: Affidavit of J.J. Immigration has become a hot political issue with politicians — federally and provincially — and Canadians are telling pollsters what they're feeling: there are just too many people coming into the country, and resources are being squeezed. In this episode of “It's Political,” we'll take a look at what's happened on the immigration front, how the federal government is trying to reduce the number of temporary residents — now sitting at three million — and the challenges that lie ahead with Toronto Star immigration reporter Nicholas Keung. Then, we'll sit down with Scotiabank vice president Rebekah Young, Waterloo University's Mikal Skuterud, and UBC emeritus professor Dan Hiebert to get their thoughts on what policy makers need to consider, what the number of new immigrants should be, and what to watch for next month when Immigration Minister Marc Miller lays out the government's three-year plan for permanent and temporary migration numbers. Some of the clips this week were sourced from the House of Commons, the Canadian Parliamentary Press Gallery, CPAC, as well as the CBC, CTV, Global, PBS, CityTV, the Western Standard, True North, the Tyee, the Globe and Mail, The Montreal Gazette, the podcast Uncommons with Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith, and the Alberta Government. In this episode: Scotia Bank Vice President and head of Inclusion and Resilience Economics Rebekah Young, University of Waterloo Economics Professor Mikal Skuterud, University of British Columbia Geography professor emeritus Daniel Hiebert, Toronto Star Immigration reporter Nicholas Keung, as well as the voices of political leaders such as Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre, Conservative MP Ryan Williams, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, New Brunswick Premier Blaine Higgs, Quebec Premier François Legault, federal Immigration Minister Marc Miller, federal Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Hosted by Althia Raj. This episode of “It's Political” was produced by Kevin Sexton. And Althia Raj. Matt Hearn is our sound engineer. Our theme music is by Isaac Joel.

The Alberta Government recently announced their intention to ban gender-affirming care for trans youth under the age of 18, despite contemporary research and internationally recognized best practices, as set out by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), agreeing that this could end up hurting many of those vulnerable youth. Additionally proposed measures for transgender minors also includes a ban on puberty blockers and parental consent for pronoun changes. Teachers and health professionals were largely not consulted, but more importantly, trans youth have had their voices completely ignored. If legislated into law, these measures could have serious consequences and make Alberta similar to most U.S. states controlled by Republican politicians. The speaker will contend this is blatant government overreach and legislated bias. Speaker: Katie DeLucia-Burk Katie DeLucia-Burk (she/her), is a registered social worker with a BSW from the University of Calgary. She is the sole consultant and educator for Queer Consulting YQL, through which she works with an array of service providers and institutions to foster belonging, transform systems and spaces, and address the systemic oppression of 2SLGBTQ+ folks. A self-identified queer, trans woman, Katie's work centers around community-based advocacy, trans feminist theory and research, and developing resources and policies to support marginalized communities. She has spoken at several national conferences on topics related to gender and sexuality, including the 2023 Moving Trans History Forward Conference at the University of Victoria where she presented on a teaching resource manual, of which she is a co-author, entitled Teaching Beyond the Gender Binary: A Resource Manual.
Peter and Jackie discuss the latest energy headlines and policy announcements on this week's podcast. Listed below are the topics covered:The Alberta Government is lifting the moratorium on new wind and solar project permits, a policy that was enacted in the summer of 2023. The Alberta Government introduces its 2024 fiscal budget. Before the budget announcement, Premier Danielle Smith made the case for rebuilding the Alberta Heritage Savings Trust Fund to help eliminate the revenue roller coaster that results from volatile oil and gas prices. The budget also included Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) funding and a registration tax of $200 per year for each electric vehicle. Qatar announced it will add more LNG capacity by 2030. Given Shell's recent projection of more than 50% growth in global LNG demand by 2040 and that the US will supply 30% of total demand by 2030, what are the implications on LNG markets and the Canadian opportunity for LNG exports? The IEA has been criticized for prioritizing climate advocacy over energy security. New proposed policies from the Alberta Government would mean sweeping changes to medical care for trans youth, and inclusion policies in schools. Part of the argument, is the rights of parents to know and have a say in their child's education and healthcare. But what are parental rights? And is it that simple? Host Clare Bonnyman digs into perspectives from across the province.

Peter and Jackie start the year by reviewing the extreme cold in Alberta that caused a spike in electricity demand, resulting in the Alberta Electricity System Operator (AESO) issuing four grid alerts between January 12th and 15th. The electricity supply-demand balance was the tightest on Saturday evening (January 13th), causing the Alberta Government to issue an emergency alert to people's mobile phones. About 200 MW of demand fell off the system within minutes of issuing the notice. Peter and Jackie also discuss other storms brewing on the horizon and introduce the 2024 energy themes to watch along with some predictions. Here are the energy-related topics they will be closely following: The US Election Canadian Politics and Energy Policy Interest Rates Military Conflicts and the Risk of Oil Supply Outages Oil and Gas Markets Climate Change Policy Nuclear Power Electric Vehicle Adoption Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Energy Clean Energy Investing Oil and Gas Mergers and Acquisitions Please review our disclaimer at: https://www.arcenergyinstitute.com/disclaimer/Check us out on social media:X (Twitter): @arcenergyinstLinkedIn: @ARC Energy Research InstituteSubscribe to ARC Energy Ideas PodcastApple PodcastsGoogle PodcastsAmazon MusicSpotify

This week our guest is Jason Schneider, Director, Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) and Reeve of Vulcan County in Southern Alberta. The RMA is a progressive, independent association committed to meeting the diverse and changing needs of Alberta's 69 counties and municipal districts. Since 1909, the RMA has helped rural municipalities advocate for strong, effective local government. The RMA did not ask for a pause on new permits for renewables projects in Alberta; however, they do have concerns that they hope the inquiry will tackle, including the use of prime agricultural land for renewables projects and a lack of plans for reclamation and cleanup. Jason is also an elected official in Vulcan County. Vulcan County is conveniently located close to Calgary and Lethbridge in southwest Alberta. Including the towns and rural areas, the total population is about 7,000 people. The County covers an area of about 6.5 times larger than Calgary. Vulcan County currently has four renewable projects operating or under construction, approximately six approved projects, and about a dozen more in the pre-approval, early proposal stages. Here are some of the questions Jackie and Peter asked Jason: What is the scale of the renewable projects in Vulcan County? Who benefits financially from the projects? What are some of RMA's concerns with the current process for approving and permitting renewables projects? Is the building of transmission lines also a concern? What are the requirements for reclamation of the projects? If the projects are on private land, why is reclamation a concern of the municipality? Does social media and misinformation contribute to opposition to renewable projects? If so, what is the best way to communicate accurate information to citizens? What changes would you like to see from the Alberta Utilities Commission's (AUC) inquiry on the development of renewables projects? The Supreme Court had ruled that sexual orientation should be read into Alberta's human rights legislation. But the Alberta Government had one more tool it could use to deny equality to its Queer population. That option was the Notwithstanding Clause. The province slipped into turmoil as the Alberta Government debated whether or not to invoke the Notwithstanding Clause. As Premier Ralph Klein remained silent, hate and vitriol bubbled to the surface of public discourse resulting in massive letter-writing campaigns and death threats. Welcome to episode 8 of Vriend Versus Alberta. *NOTE: The terms “Queer and Trans” and “sexual and gender […]
This week Michael (Mike) Rose, Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Tourmaline joins us as our guest. Tourmaline made some exciting announcements last week. First, they announced a partnership on a compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station network across Western Canada to enable heavy-haul trucks to get off diesel. The company also announced that they plan to double the amount of gas they ship as LNG by 2026. Here are some of the questions that Jackie and Peter asked Mike: How have Western Canadian gas producers survived low gas prices? Why is Tourmaline investing in natural gas stations for heavy-haul trucking now, considering it still has GHG emissions? Has Tourmaline reduced its environmental footprint, including greenhouse gas emissions? How challenging is it to achieve the federal government's goal of reducing oil and gas emissions in the range of 40 to 45 percent by 2030? Are you exporting LNG to international markets today? Can Canada compete with the U.S. to supply gas to LNG export terminals on the U.S. Gulf Coast? How much WCSB gas could ultimately be shipped off Canada's West Coast? Other information referenced in this podcast: Alberta Government's aspirational plan to reach net zero by 2050 “Alberta emissions reduction and energy development plan.” Global News (April 18, 2023) “Tourmaline, Clean Energy Fuels to partner on natural gas fueling station network.” Bloomberg (April 18, 2023) “Tourmaline Aims to Double Portion of Gas Shipped as LNG by 2026.” Please review our disclaimer at: https://www.arcenergyinstitute.com/disclaimer/
When Delwin Vriend was fired from his job at a Christian college for being gay, he had two choices; he could accept his termination, or fight back. He chose to fight. The first step was to file a complaint to the Alberta Human Rights Commission, but after the Commission denied his request it was time to take the Alberta Government to court. In this episode we look at the series of serendipitous events that brought Delwin's legal team together to continue the arduous journey toward equality for Canada's 2SLGBTQI+ community. Welcome to episode 3 of Vriend Versus Alberta. *NOTE: The […]
The Alberta government says there's no evidence of emails between the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's office. This comes after the CBC published a story alleging that staff in Smith's office emailed Crown prosecutors challenging their assessment and direction on cases stemming from the Coutts border blockades and protests. Who do you believe? A European politician who's made headlines for criticizing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is bringing her road show to Canada – literally. And following the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Canada has announced that they've joined another global coalition taking aim at climate change. Corey Hogan and Stephen Carter talk about Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's federal-government-criticism-heavy press conference. Does the Alberta Government have a point about the "just transition"? Did Danielle Smith turn the purchase of a pile of child-unsafe baby medicine into a win? And has anybody checked Confederation Park for our host? Zain Velji, as always, isn't here.
