Born to Greek and Austrian parents, Alina grew up during the financial crisis in Athens, Greece. After school, she moved to Vienna, Austria to graduate with degrees in Communication Science and Political Science. After a short and rather disenchanting journey into the world of advertising, Alina returned to academia for her doctoral research where she explored how Virtual Reality can affect how we think and behave toward complex sociopolitical issues. Her co-authored study about the influence of deepfakes on media trust and credibility won the award for Best Student Paper at the annual conference of the International Communication Science Association in 2023. Alina has held several courses at the University of Vienna, ranging from empirical research methods in the Social Sciences to Media History. In October 2023 she presented her research at AWE EU, the leading industry conference on mixed reality. Constantly fascinated with the hypes, hopes and fears that surround new technologies, Alina has been a Curator at TEDxVienna since 2019. There she specialises on interdisciplinary ideas about tech, philosophy and power, and brings them to life in the form of TEDx Talks. To deal with how miraculous and ridiculous the world is she constantly experiments with different artforms: A regular on Vienna's storytelling stages, Alina is known for her criticisms on capitalism, her borderline anarchist stance and her absurdist humor. Her most recent appearance was at the Rote Bar at Volkstheater, Vienna. Alina is also the creator of the (so far unsuccessful) dadaist Bring Back Boredom movement and the far more successful event format “Poetry Society Vienna”. Alina holds a Bakk.phil, MSc and Dr.phil. in Communication Science as well as a BA in Political Science from the University of Vienna, Austria. Related Episodes 313.
Réka Artner and her team of 70 have been producing TEDxVienna for several years now. She joined the team after attending TEDxVieannaLive in 2012. It's one of the TEDx events that other organizers would love to visit. Set in some of the cities most amazing historical venues, this TEDx also features Adventures (see video) and workshops. TEDxVienna has been around since 2010 and has produced 23 events, including Salons and Live simulcasts. Réka has an infectious laugh, and her first job was as an event manager and working with 50 volunteers on the day of the event. She says that the most significant surprise has been what the audience reacts to. Having a close liaison with the speakers gives her a sense of how the audience will respond, and they resonate with the ideas in unexpected ways. She loves this. The idea of producing Adventures for the event, essentially mini-field trips, led by volunteers, is a way to take attendees on a local exploration into a place that they'd probably not be able to get to on their own. They did ten adventures with 20 people in each one. (The more we hear about adventures, the more we want to produce them ourselves).

And who am I chatting with this week? The incredible Erika Lust about being an erotic filmmaker, the porn industry, evoking powerful performances from her actors, and her new non-profit helping parents to talk about porn with their kids. Of all the erotic filmmakers doing ethical porn in the world, Erika's videos are some of the most arousing for me. I adore the humor and shamelessness of her stories. She seamlessly incorporates beauty, eroticism, and playfulness into each and every video in a way that I find endlessly delicious. So here is me, geeking out over getting to chat with someone I deeply admire. Follow Sex Gets Real on Twitter and Facebook. It's true. Oh! And Dawn is on Instagram. Resources discussed in this episode Erika's IKEA video, which is very funny, is in the XConfessions Volume 1 set. About Erika Lust Erika Lust is a filmmaker, mother, writer, blogger, owner and founder of Erika Lust Films where she offers an alternative to the mainstream porn industry. She is also the creator of groundbreaking audiovisual project XConfessions.com, the first crowdsourced series that brought adult film to cinema screens. Born in 1977 in Sweden, she studied political sciences, feminism and sexuality at the University of Lund. Tired of chauvinistic and tacky mainstream porn, she moved to Barcelona in 2000 where she took classes in film directing before bursting into the adult industry in 2004, with the indie short film The Good Girl - a humorous statement of principles using the “pizza delivery boy” trope. The immediate success of this first attempt encouraged her to pursue a career in adult cinema. Erika has directed four multi-award winning features: “Five Hot Stories For Her”, “Barcelona Sex Project”, “Life Love Lust” and “Caberet Desire”, and has also written five books including “Let’s Make A Porno” and her acclaimed erotic novel “La Canción de Nora” (“Nora’s Song”). In 2013 Erika began the XConfessions series, a site where users watch short films based on their own anonymous sexual confessions. Every month Erika Lust picks two of her followers’ fantasies and turns them into erotic explicit short films. Now in it’s third year, Erika has filmed over 100 short films, released XConfessions seventh volume and has now invited guest directors to be part of the project, supporting the burgeoning alternative talent across the globe. In 2015, she gave her “It’s Time for Porn to Change” talk at TEDxVienna which gained her notoriety for her campaign to change porn. Erika’s philosophy for a new adult cinema is based on 4 main ideas: women’s pleasure matters, adult cinema can have cinematic values, we need more body types, different ages and diverse races and the production process has to be ethical. She defends the importance of the female gaze and the need of having women behind the camera in all key positions. Erika lives in Barcelona with her partner and husband Pablo and their two daughters, Lara and Liv. You can also see Erika's new project bringing together erotic filmmakers at eroticfilms.com and her non-profit helping parents talk to their kids about porn at thepornconversation.org. For the sixth episode of the podcast I had the pleasure of catching up with George Nimeh while visiting Vienna. We met at the Impact Hub, a co-working space in the centre of Vienna, just a few doors down from George's previous employer, the Austrian newspaper Kurier. I've known George since late 2007 when he hired me to join iris in London, he was the managing director of the Digital arm of the creative agency at the time. George has a wealth of experience in media, publishing, digital technologies, branding and advertising working for companies such as The New York Times, Organic, iris and Red Bull. He shares a lot of his knowledge and experience in this episode. Main topics include ad blocking technologies, the evolution of online advertising, looking for the new, creating valuable content and telling stories, the comeback of patronage, the challenges of old and established legacy publishers, etc. He recently gave a talk at TEDx Vienna with the theme "What if there was no advertising?" you can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01PUSrLCvcM Links and information mentioned in this episode: Follow George on Twitter, or these other places online Impact Hub Vienna Kurier Austria Organic iris Worldwide The New York Times Red Bull Red Bull Space Jump video Vlad Gozman, author and organiser TEDx Vienna Kickstarter Brainpickings, Maria Popova Settlers of Catan Candyland Berlin School of Creative Leadership
