Food Waste is a Global Problem with a Big Carbon FootprintOne-third of all food produced is wasted every year – approximately 1.3 billion tons. The UN Environment Program estimates that 3.3 billion tons of CO2 are emitted annually from the resources used to produce wasted food. In the United States alone, 133 billion pounds of edible food, valued at $161 billion, is wasted every year. Replate's SolutionEnter Replate: a technology-based nonprofit that works to reduce food insecurity and waste while mitigating food waste´s effects on climate change. The organization provides a solution for businesses to donate surplus food to nearby nonprofits operating throughout the United States and the Middle East. Replate's services are designed to prevent such food waste through source reduction and donating meals to communities experiencing food insecurity. Its algorithm connects donor organizations to nonprofits, diverting food from landfills while increasing food access. How Replate WorksTheir organization operates through a web app. Donors can schedule pick-up services, then track the environmental and social impact of their donations. Nonprofits can sign up to receive donations using an online form. Replate then works to understand these organizations' capacity and food needs before drop off. Replate works with hundreds of corporations including Netflix, Boston Consulting Group, Whole Foods, Chipotle, Walmart, and more to match businesses with communities in need. Since its founding, Replate has recovered over 3.6 million pounds of food, delivered over three million meals, and served 301 nonprofits. It estimates that to date the program has saved 985 million gallons of water and diverted 3,686 tons of carbon emissions.Connections to California Composting GoalsAs organic material like food and agricultural waste decomposes, it releases methane, a greenhouse gas eighty-four times more potent than carbon dioxide in the atmosphere over a 20-year period. Enacted in January 2022, California's Short-Lived Pollutant Reduction law SB-1383 targets is trying to address methane emissions due to organic waste. SB-1383 is expected to reduce California's methane emissions from organic materials in traditional landfills by an estimated twenty percent. As part of the law, large food service providers, distributors, and industries falling under the Tier 1 category—food service providers, food distributors, wholesale food vendors, supermarkets and grocery stores over 10,000 square feet—are required to reduce their organic waste material disposal. Platforms like Replate can help businesses reduce their food waste and comply with SB-1383. Maen Mahfoud is the founder and CEO of Replate. Witnessing the alarming levels of food insecurity, and enormous amounts of food waste in the Bay Area, his knowledge of the massive effects of food waste on our planet motivated Mahfoud to launch Replate in 2016. Maen is a DRK entrepreneur, a 2023 recipient of the James Irvine Foundation Leadership, and was sponsored by Harvard Business School's Executive Program. Sarah Stallard is a 7th generation farmer who came to work with her uncles on a new farm near Las Vegas Nevada raising hogs. The farm is in partnership with the local waste and recycling company Republic Services. They lease the land from Republic Services and use food waste to feed the hogs. She says the partnership was formed “to help find a solution to organic waste." The family had always fed food scraps as pigs “are not picky about what food scraps” they eat.  Sarah describes the process of collecting, sorting, and feeding tons of mixed rations from casino kitchens and buffets, facilities such as an ice cream factory, and grocery stores. What the farm produces is marketed locally, and they do face challenges due to the lack of an USDA processing plant for meat in Nevada. The family's dream is to “complete the circle” through having their locally produced food offered in the casinos. She also describes how the hogs are housed and raised sustainably and humanely. There is a lot of attention paid to what they are doing to reduce food waste, and they are “willing to help and network with other farmers,” including hosting many tours. About this work, Sarah says, “I can feel really good about what I'm doing; it's good to know that I'm making a difference daily.”____________Thanks for listening to Fresh Growth! Tea bags, as you probably have witnessed, come in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and makes. One of these makes is called “nonwoven fabric”. Nonwoven fabrics are “sheet or web structures bonded together by entangling fiber or filaments (and by perforating films) mechanically, thermally, or chemically.” What exactly does that mean? Basically, they are flat sheets of a thin cloth-like material that allow for certain elements to pass through them and are created from either separate fibers or plastic. On this episode of Five Minute Friday, Bob is talking trash! No, not the smack talk variety, but rather new California legislation which has taken effect regarding the disposal of organic waste. This is something for CA landlords and property managers alike to be aware of, especially for multifamily buildings and apartment communities. Why is California doing this? California throws away more than 6 Million tons of food waste every year and more than 24 tons of combined “green organic waste”. SB 1383 is the new law which aims to reduce the short-lived pollutants that many Californians are currently putting in our landfills. Why is this important? The reason is that landfill organic waste emits methane, a super pollutant that is more powerful as a greenhouse gas than CO2. SB 1383 advocates are targeting Californians to reduce organic waste disposal by 75% by 2025. For those wanting more information on SB 1383 and California composting requirements, visit the Cal Recycle website at this web link: California Composting Requirements Website:https://www.calrecycle.ca.gov/organics/slcp/ Thank you for joining Five Minute Friday, TGIF and we will catch you next week!Connect with BobSan Diego Property Managementhttps://www.ncpropertygroup.com/This episode is always available for listening, sharing, or download at Property Management Brainstorm. Once again, an idea brought forward by a member of City Council who is not one of the Mayor's Executive Policy Councillors (EPC) dies with no debate, no discussion, no questions, no inquiries, and no collaboration. Klein shares a recent example of a composting tax-credit idea that died and the EPC alternative, if and when it is city-wide, may cost taxpayers more money. What was the Composting Tax-Credit Motion? Let's begin with a few organic waste “Did You Knows.” Solid Waste Collection Expenses - $25 Million per year Solid Waste Disposal Expenses - $15 Million per year Long Term Landfill Expenses not included Total Expense (Collection + Disposal) - $40 Million per year Total Garbage in 2020 – 195,000 Metric Tonnes 44% of Residential Garbage is Compostable Organics According to the Public Service, implementing the collection of organics would be very costly to taxpayers. I think people are paying more than enough and would welcome a new approach.Winnipeg has very ambitious green objectives, but we are doing little to achieve them. We can use funding from the green initiative reserve account to support the implementation and staffing. The concept is not new. The Mayor's Executive Policy Committee Member's approved the same thing two years ago for another internal position. I have received emails from residents in support of the concept. One has been compositing for 30-years. A few reminded me of a time when the City handed out free composting bins. At home composting can work in tandem with green bin collection. They can complement each other. They are not competing policies. My motion is not meant to override the current green bin pilot project. Like recycling, at home composting is just another tool in the toolbox. The motion is meant to be cost neutral. There should be no additional cost to the city. $1 million in rebates must equate to $1 million in cost savings in collection, disposal, and long-term dumping costs. That is why I am asking for a report back. We have been talking about organic waste collection for years at City Hall, and so far we only have a pilot project underway. If a resident makes the city more efficient, more environmentally friendly, reducing costs, making the city a better place to live then they should directly benefit from their efforts. I want to focus on results, getting things done for our City. I want to get things done. Dear Wachama People! With the development of agriculture throughout history we are witnessing the process of more and more control over Mother nature. It is especially true in the case of modern agriculture whit all of its inventions such as fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, high-tech machinery and gene-technology. And even more specifically in the case of controlled indoor systems. Unfortunately, most of such innovations aimed to set up centralized systems, externalize social and environmental costs when they create their business models. Our health is in jeopardy and resources are being wasted along the supply chain. While these system superiority over nature itself is often claimed. Alex van Tuyll is a Master student in biosystems engineering at Wageningen University. His initial interest started with a home-made hydroponics system, that he set up in his home’s attic as a teenager. This experience determined his choice of higher education as he wanted to learn as much as possible about, how to set up indoor agriculture systems. After several years of investigating such systems he learned a lot about their viability. His main motivation behind these studies is to use organic waste for food production. On his journey on figuring out how to create more efficient nutrient cycles, Alex found an approach being developed known as AMI (pronounced like ‘Jamie’): aquaponics, mushrooms, and insects. Studying AMI Alex faced the complexity how nature actually works within the system itself. This new insight made Alex’s view shift from willing to control nature to set up systems that are mimicking natural principles and collaborating with it. So far it was a pretty steep learning curve during the Wageningen years and it is not over yet, there is still lot to learn and investigate.
