Hey Radiolab for Kids listeners! We're back after a long hiatus with one of our favorite episodes from earlier this year. And a surprise... We're cooking up something new and looking to get your feedback. Join our Radiolab for Kids listener panel by taking this 5 minute survey (https://airtable.com/shrjoLpn13qCHlXh0). We're listening and want to create more awesome stories for you and your families! ABOUT THE EPISODE: For much of history, tree canopies were pretty much completely ignored by science. It was as if researchers said collectively, "It's just going to be empty up there, and we've got our hands full studying the trees down here! So why bother?!" But then, around the mid-1980s, a few ecologists around the world got curious and started making their way up into the treetops using any means necessary (ropes, cranes, hot air dirigibles) to document all they could find. It didn't take long for them to realize not only was the forest canopy not empty, it was absolutely filled to the brim with life. You've heard of treehouses? How about tree gardens?! This week we journey up into the sky and discover Forests above the forest. We learn about the secret powers of these sky gardens from ecologist Korena Mafune, and we follow Nalini Nadkarni as she makes a ground-breaking discovery that changes how we understand what trees are capable of. A FEW VISUAL TRE(E)ATS: We first learned about the magical world of the canopy from this beautiful video from Michael Werner, Joe Hanson, and the PBS Overview team. It features Korena Mafune's research up in the treetops, as well as the people who have dedicated their lives to saving what's left of the old growth forests. We highly recommend checking it out! And, if you're hankering to go climb a tree after this episode, you might enjoy browsing Hallie Bateman's wonderfully illustrated guide to the best climbing trees in NYC for a little inspiration. Today, I'm speaking with Joe Hanson—a Ph.D. biologist who writes, hosts, and produces videos about science for his award-winning YouTube show, It's Okay To Be Smart from PBS Digital Studios. The show has attracted 4.5 million+ subscribers and amassed more than a quarter billion views. Joe's mission in life is to tell the world how awesome science truly is. And he's doing that by changing the way science is communicated. He makes learning about it entertaining, accessible, and a lot more relatable. I wanted to talk with Joe because he has a ton of wisdom (built on science) about how we can function better in both our brains and bodies. Humans are the most complicated machines that we know of in the universe, so to learn a little bit more about how we operate and why we do the things we do, is key to living happier and healthier lives. Key Talking Points A $100 synthetic oil change doesn't cost twice as much as a $50 semi-synthetic oil change service The interview process “how much is an oil change?” gives you an opportunity to highlight your service Gain valuable shop floor space by consolidating your bulk oil storage and eliminating unneeded oil grades that do not promote the right customer in the first place. Oil changes- don't take lightly, $20 oil changes are gone and should be gone Don't rely on the ‘sticker' to check on oil- educating customers “Maintenance service” Not due for an oil change? 7,500-mile intervals. 1,000 or 2,000 miles left? For 2x a year maintenance, it's worth changing the oil early. Car count goes down, but the average repair ticket is going up Taking more time during inspections Shifting into the changing times with EVs- sell maintenance not oil changes Simplicity...

Have you ever wondered why there are seven days in a week? Or, why glaciers are blue—or what color even is? Today's guest, YouTube creator Joe Hanson, makes a living by asking—and trying to answer—these kinds of questions. A biologist turned video producer and educator, Joe spends his days thinking about how telling stories and encouraging curiosity can help people think more deeply about the universe they live in, and engage with science in more meaningful ways. In this episode, he gives tips on how to unleash our innate desire to know things, explains what makes good science, and shares how cool facts can help you save the planet— and win big at trivia night. Joe was a part of Countdown, TED's climate conference, which you can learn more about at countdown.ted.com. Key Talking Points Value your business before you sell or begin to think about selling- need to figure out value today so that you know what to do to change the value of the business in the future. Find an objective process to value your business before you start talking to a seller. Use an objective third party to negotiate with buyer and seller- CPA/accountant/business valuators. “Higher than what you want to pay and lower than what you want to sell.” Work together instead of against. The best tool to evaluate/estimate what a shop is worth- multiple of net income, what does it make at foundation over 3-5 years? Multiply 2.5-3X SDE- seller discretionary earnings, do you add it back in? If the owner is an integral part of the organizaion (owner and service advisor/technician etc) then you can't justify adding back payroll. Financial forecast- creating a roadmap for bank/SBA, prepare financials, marketing campaigns, write assumptions for expenses The end game isn't closing on the business, it is succeeding in new business Know your buyer- price is important but the representation of price is where the value is Key advantages- finding out what motivation of the seller, most time it is about legacy and wellbeing for employees and customers. Trust and transparency with both parties Take emotion out- need to be in a logical state of mind, you are purchasing and selling an asset Growing after purchasing- as an owner, business, and employees Support during venture- at home, professional network as you go through all the ups and downs. Learn from other people's successes and failures. A special thanks to Hunt Demarest, Brian Bates and Joe Hanson for their contribution to the aftermarket. This week, Maggie & Jacob are joined by two lovely actors and overall wonderful humans, Joe Hanson and Madeline Lacey. Together they tackle a really fun installment in the Friday the 13th Franchise: Jason Takes Manhattan. This movie was the most expensive budget in the Friday series when it was made in 1989, and this is one of the longest Camp Slasher episodes thus far. Join us as we discuss Jason's magical adventure on a boat (and 10 minutes in Manhattan), full of creative kills, baby lake boy Jason hallucinations, and more teleporting Jason than one movie can handle. With villains you love to hate, and a wild 1980s score, this is a great movie to watch with friends or even by yourself.Check out Joe on the Voices from the Umbra podcast, which can be found all places you listen to podcasts. The Panel: Jeff Matt from Victory Auto Service in Minneapolis and St. Petersburg, FLA, was featured in episode 48. Jeff owns six locations with one being in Florida. He has over 40 team members and has grown through acquisition. Jeff opened Victory in 1997 as a one-bay shop and has slow steady growth over the years. His growth offers up a great view of multi-shop ownership. Episodes Jeff Matt is featured in (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22jeff+Matt%22) Michael Maloney is president of Convenience Auto Service and owns two general repair facilities in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Mike brings a fairly unusual blend of corporate technical expertise and business leadership to his shops. “I spent thirty years working in large companies, but always wanted my own business.” He launched that dream following his retirement from a series of ‘regular jobs.’ His insights into spaces where automotive, consumer electronics and customer service intersect are drawn from real world experience with some of the world’s most successful and innovative companies, including Ford, Nokia, Tyco, GM, Apple, B&W, and Microsoft. His leadership of technology acquisitions, engineering, manufacturing, and purchasing for companies in the consumer electronics, audio and auto spaces gives him a unique perspective relative to other shop owners. Listen to Michael’s Episodes (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=Maloney) . Corey Evaldi grew up in Buffalo, NY (Lackawanna). His dad had his own auto repair shop before Corey was even born. In 1988, he built the shop that is still in business today. He started to enjoy the electronics and troubleshooting of vehicles really young. During his junior and senior year of high school, He went to Potter Road Career and Technical Center and took the Automotive programs. His senior year had an automotive competition at ECC, local community college. In 2015 he returned and was overwhelmed with the responsibilities of running a shop. he was a technician, service writer, accountant, clean up person, the fireman that extinguished fires all over. He could not keep doing what he was doing. He produced 40% of the billed hours out of 4 techs. He looked for help. Found a coaching firm that really showed him what a business owner looks like. After implementing the changes, there was extreme push back from the existing crew. After standing firm on most things, change over was inevitable. Listen to Corey’s Episodes (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=Evaldi) . Joe Hanson owns Gordie’s Garage. Talking Points For Flat Rate Jeff Matt: I've never met an hourly paid technician or a technician with a high guarantee of pay that is a high producing technician. Our limited commodity is time. To be an effective leader we need to know that pay is just one part of an employee experience You need to keep your shop full When they produce you need to be willing to pay them Mike’s tech's hourly rate goes up fast when they hit the breakeven number. He has tiers of hour they need to perform Jeff:End of day on a Friday when a battery comes in the door. He says if flat rate the customer, the tech and the shop will all win. An hourly tech may not have an incentive to help the customer in this circumstance Mike says the pay plan should take on the personality of the owner and how he leads Mike’s SMS shows the team where they stand on their hours so they can see their next bonus tier Mike will pay a GS or Tire Tech by the hour An example from Mike will...

Your Learning Curve Never Sounded So Good Ron Ipach, co-founder or Repair Shop Coach, has helped over 5536 auto repair shop owners to get and keep all the top-quality customers they can handle. Marketing auto repair services are all he does. He lives, eats, and breathes it every day. He has seen, heard, and tested practically every kind of marketing there is out there today. He’s examined the results. He’s tweaked and tested dozens of strategies over and over in order to maximize their results. Because Ron has personally worked with so many shop owners over the years, he has the distinction of being the only person in the world that knows exactly what marketing works, and what doesn’t work for auto repair shops in today’s economy. He finds passion in amplifying time & freedom for his clients while helping them take back control of their businesses. Find other episodes that feature Ron HERE (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22ron+ipach%22) . Joe Hanson owns Gordie’s Garage. Listen to Joe’s Episodes (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=hanson) . Key Talking Points: No panelists are experts on exercise. This discussion is meant to provide their point of view on the value they receive from exercise. Consult with your doctor before you ever start an exercise regiment. Consult with a professional coach or trainer before you ever start an exercise regiment. According to the World Health Organization — 80% of premature heart disease, stroke, and diabetes is self-inflicted. 40% of cancer is self-inflicted (Only 10% is hereditary and the rest is environmental) Many health issues can be prevented Exercise can become a way of life. Involve a community to motivate you. Exercise can become a habit if you have the desire to get it done. Cardo is healthy for your inside. Another benefit for exercising is the external benefit like losing weight and fitting in your clothes. When you lift weights you are burying fat for days as your muscles work to retain their training. There can be a big benefit to the energy you have at work and at home. You can find a competitive nature while you are working out with friends, family or a team. If you know your WHY you’ll have more success committing to exercise. Think of your hereditary makeup. Find a new lifestyle to be healthy. Having a coach or trainer to keep you accountable is important. You can also use a friend at the gym or a workout buddy to keep you going and doing. Know your goals. Get up early. For Joe going to the gym is like an energy drink! As of this recording, Ron Ipach has been to the gym for 453 days in a row. If Ron skips a day he has to start his counter at 1. Staying healthy is an example to your family. You are who you hang out with. You only have one chance to take care of yourself. We are busy, so find a slow easy way to build your regiment. You can exercise during commercials of your favorite TV show. Do push ups! Let it become an exercise break. The act of getting of the coach if personal motivation. Taking a walk or hiking can be included in your exercise regiment. There are many opportunities to be healthy today. We fall into society’s acceptance by eating fast food every day. Ron loves having had worked out not working out. He loves the results. Never overdo your workout so you are not hurting too long and lose your motivation to go. You didn’t get unhealthy overnight so your regiment must be long term also. Set short term and long term goals. Reward yourself for getting there. Set goals in your twenty group. Joe...

Don’t rule our assessments like DISC. Co-workers want to know if they are doing a good job for you. They want to be in on things. Let them know that they are contributing the right stuff to the company. Reviews is a formal way to be sure accountability sticks. Frank: There is a moral component to treat our customers as family. Give your customer the option to step up or step out of the work that needs to get done. A lot of people are pissed off (mostly the left) that Donald Trump won the presidency because Hillary won the popular vote. So the debate this week is: SHOULD WE GET RID OF THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE? Joe Hanson from Joe Goes is back this week, and he helps debate the merits of the "electoral college," which isn't a college so much as a system of election that no other country uses, except for Burundi, Estonia, Kazakhstan and the country of Vanuatu, which I didn't know existed until I did research to write this sentence. Is it a good system? Do we need it or is it out of date? That's the debate this week. I've linked to that badass backup server recommended by our very own, Lord Matthew. I've created a banner on the page that you can bookmark to shop on Amazon and support Madcast Media Network: https://www.amazon.com/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=212353&creative=380557&linkCode=sb1&tag=bestdebate-20 https://madcastmedia.com/amazon Rucka got promoted back to Lieutenant Moderator, and Joe got promoted to Junior Assistant Deputy Moderator. And speaking of Rucka, he's switched from calling me a Hillary supporter to a full-on Trump blowhard. Who do I really support? Tune in to find out! And for those who never saw it, I did a video with Joe a while back which I'll link to again here: https://youtu.be/z0H6kNmVskk Plus we discuss Mark Cuckerberg's culpability in the election outcome, and marijuana butter for kids. Things at Disney World: Florida that would be helpful for guests to know: nearest elevator, wi-fi code, ice location and the fact that their lagoon is teeming with gators. This week: alligators and kids. Who wins? Turns out, alligators. A family checked into the Disney World resort in Florida and their son was attacked by a gator. People were quick to blame the parents, but according to reports, Disney had no signs posted about alligators. Definitely worth knocking a star or two off the review. I'm joined by Joe Hanson from the Joe Goes show as moderator this week. We did a debate video together which will be posted on his channel and here as soon as it's finished. Spoiler: I win everything. Not sure about Disney's culpability in this gator attack? Here's a video of a Disney employee warding off a gator near Splash Mountain: https://youtu.be/ZONXg4QRSDA I also talk about some very deep and specific Armenian stereotypes at the top of the show. On the show this week we welcome Arthur I. Miller—physics Ph.D., science historian, philosopher—and an art aficionado to boot. We talked to Miller about his new book, Colliding Worlds: How Cutting-Edge Science is Redefining Contemporary Art, in which he makes the case for the existence of a "third culture" that, today, is mashing together art, science, and technology into one big domain. "There are still people who think science is science, and art is art," says Miller. "But that is very far from the situation because it is very, very common and meaningful today for artists to indulge in science and technology in doing their work."This episode also features a short discussion with Joe Hanson, writer and host of the "It's Okay to Be Smart" video series, about the science of Game of Thrones, what blowing on Nintendo cartridges has to do with your cognitive biases, new evidence disproving Bigfoot, the relationship between seeing UFOs and alcohol consumption, why men born in winter are more likely to be left-handed… and more.iTunes: itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/inquiring-minds/id711675943RSS: feeds.feedburner.com/inquiring-mindsStitcher: stitcher.com/podcast/inquiring-minds
I recently collaborated with Joe Hanson of the YouTube channel It’s Okay to be Smart and helped him write an episode about pattern recognition. I thought it would be great to bring him on the show and interview him in an episode all about the new science communicators. We learn what it is like to be part of the new wave of science communication, talk about science literacy, and discuss the ramifications of rubbing a beard with an infected chicken before conducting lab work. After the interview, I discuss a study about the difference between dogma and belief superiority, and how it helps explain why some politicians will never compromise.
