On this special episode, we seek out the answer through the visionary artwork of William Blake. In 1805, William Blake was commissioned by his patron and friend, Thomas Butts, to create a set of watercolor illustrations depicting key scenes from The Book of Job. Blake clearly resonated with this 2,600 year old story—there are no other Biblical narratives which he dedicated so much time and energy to. What value did Blake see in The Book of Job? Every stroke of her pen strips away the unnecessary, letting the essentials shine through.Creating her daily comic strip, Rhymes with Orange, Price starts with the game of “what if,” merging unexpected ideas to surprise and engage her readers. “You want to start at the action moment—or just before,” she notes, pointing out how the unsaid often speaks louder. Price extends this philosophy beyond cartoons: whether crafting a presentation, a joke, or a story, it's essential to leave room for the audience to co-create meaning. “Don't spoon-feed your readers,” she says. “The joy comes from not getting it, then getting it.” In this bonus episode of Think Fast Talk Smart, Price joins host Matt Abrahams to explore the power of surprise, stakes, and shared experience in storytelling—reminding us that the punchline, whether in humor or communication, is where the magic happens.Episode Reference Links:Hilary PriceRhymes With OrangeEp.170 Advice From Nontraditional Storytellers Part 1Ep.171 Advice From Nontraditional Storytellers Part 2 Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:35) - What Makes a Good Story? Creativity Tips from Alex Osborn - Old Masters Series

Copywriters Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 24, 2023

Today we return to Old Masters Series with a guy I'm going to call The Godfather of Creativity, Alex Osborn. He's best known for inventing brainstorming, which was first used at his advertising agency BBDO (the O was for Osborn). But he has done a lot more than that. For example, in 1954 he co-founded the Creative Education Foundation. And he's written a number of books. The best-known one was the bestseller Your Creative Power. However, a lesser-known book, Wake Up Your Mind: 101 Ways To Develop Your Creativeness, is what we're going to use today to get into some really interesting, practical ideas about creativity and writing copy. First, we went over over a few things about creativity as we define it. First of all, creativity is not coming up with harebrained ideas like lizards that play golf to sell life insurance. Not in the way we're talking about today. Creativity is finding better ways to get a prospect excited about and committed to buying what you are selling. No lizards required or desired. Second, in his book, Osborn says something dear to my heart: Schools teach the wrong things for creativity. This was back in the day; this book was published in 1952. I don't know what schools teach these days, but, if the main purpose of school is to teach kids to score high on standardized tests so they can get into a platinum-level college, that works against developing creative abilities. Someone named Burdette Ross Buckingham wrote a book in 1926 called “Research for Teachers,” and Osborn says ever since that book came out “educators have increasingly leaned on statistics. This has led to accumulation of facts, and deprecation of the generation of ideas.” He goes on, “Creativity necessarily lacks exactness.” One of the guiding questions of schools is, “Can it be tested?”, and Osborn says this question gets in the way of schools developing creativity skills. That is, since creativity is not exact, so you can't test or measure it. Now science, technology, engineering and math are survival skills in the jobs economy these days, but remember that the people who built the companies that hire all those people, had far greater imaginations than most of their employees. That is, they have much better practical creativity skills, among other things, than your average bear. Something to think about. The third thing that's really important before we got into these seven steps of creativity: In real life creativity may not work this way exactly, and Osborn says so in his book. Sometimes you take these steps out of order. Sometimes you don't take all of them. He writes: “The more I study and practice creativity, the surer I feel that its process is necessarily a stop-and-go, a catch-as-catch can, a ring-around-the-rosie; and the more I doubt whether it can ever be ‘exact' enough to rate as scientific.” Osborn says, “The most we can honestly say is that it usually includes some or all of these phases.” I would have to agree. There's no set formula for creativity, but knowing these seven steps will put you in a better place to come up with profitable creative ideas than not knowing them will. Osborn had an unusual comment about the importances of mental and emotional effort in creativity. He says “Writers recognize as ‘rhythms of creativity,' the ups and downs of their power to produce. Since each person's talent is the same from day to day, those cycles must be solely cycles of energy—a fact which helps prove how dependent upon our drive creativity can be.” We then proceeded to go through Osborn's Seven Steps, and added a tip about reading books a special way to increase your creativity. A good show, well worth taking in. This is a Guided Meditation episode about one of the most perplexing aspects of creativity: Intuition. What is it and how do we engage it more effectively? This meditation is based on a technique I've been developing called: Intuition Mapping. Grab a cup of coffee / tea, and give this guided meditation a test drive to see what compulsions are pushing and pulling you. Some helpful notes: • Motivations push you. Intentions direct you. Intuitions pull you. • To find your motivations ask: what is pushing you? • To find your intentions ask: what are you pushing yourself toward? • To find your intuitions ask: what is pulling you? What is gently tugging at the fabric of your being? • Intuitions often feel like something is pulling your neural network toward a certain direction, it's a feeling to move in a certain direction. One which you often can't always explain with logic. --------- Become a patron of the show on my Patreon and gain access gain access to exclusive episodes, including the Kurt Cobain series, Creativity Tips, and all the Episode Exclusives: https://www.patreon.com/mjdorian --------- Connect with me on social media for all the newest updates: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mjdorian/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/mjdorian ---------- Cover Art: Hesiod & The Muse (1891) by Gustave Moreau ---------- Written & Produced by MJDorian. Here's something of a truth: ‘normal' people don't make commercials for a living. They don't write 30-second spots featuring Muppets talking on a Facebook Portal, they don't have their words read by Arnold Schwarzeneggar, they don't direct actors in Romania over Zoom, and they definitely don't have their work seen by millions of people watching March Madness.  Husband and wife duo, Andy and Elly Holdeman, are two normals that do these very things. They market some of the most recognizable brands in the world--AirBNB, Facebook, XBOX--and, not surprisingly (given what we learned about their job to find human truth), they shared some very recognizable (even normal) facets about their lives: insecurity about your ideas, struggles for inspiration, frustration with clients, bosses/coworkers who just don't get it. As Andy and Elly share bits of their creative process, they drop truth bombs (as Andy is wont to call them) that are accessible and useful no matter what you do. Take “Underthink”, which is salve to the weary souls of we anxious, neurotic, or perfectionistic types; sometimes, we just need to take a “less is more” approach. Another pearl of wisdom was “If you're going to do it, you better enjoy it” because...life's too short, man.                                                                               Finally, everyone should take heed to the Holdemans' #1 axiom: “Take long walks.” So, download this pod, get your sneaks on, and take that stroll these creative genius normals ordered up.

In this episode, I chat with Liyana Hanif, Creative Lead at Progresif and Founder of Just Bruneians. Liyana was featured on The Futur, an online education platform for creative entrepreneurs with over 200 thousand followers on Instagram back in March 2020. Liyana shares a few misconceptions about creativity, her thoughts on the status quo of creativity in Brunei, and advice for aspiring creatives - including having the confidence to fail. We also exchange views on brand building, and the importance of learning business skills and working hard. This is personally a special episode because Liyana was the first person I had a Conversation with back in June 2019. That was the Conversation that got the ball rolling for me and this podcast. Embedded Content Challenge Today, I want to give you a challenge to create a certain type of content. This is in the vein of our blogging groove challenge which we did about six weeks ago. I’ve just returned from the ProBlogger Event, and I am inspired. I received a lot of listener feedback about how the podcast has helped listeners and how the challenge series have had a positive impact on listeners. I hope to do one challenge a month. Instead of completing the content in 24 hours, I would like to give you seven days to complete the challenge. The new challenge is to create a piece of content that features embeddable content. Then share it on our facebook challenge group.   Further Resources  7 Days to Getting Your Blogging Groove Back 31 Days to Build a Better Blog How to Cut Out the Subject From the Background in Photoshop 9 Composition Techniques to Use to Improve Your Photography Review: Light Painting Brushes – Tools for Creativity Tips on Taking Your Blog to the Next Level With Embeddable Content Full Transcript Expand to view full transcript Compress to smaller transcript view Hey there, it’s Darren from ProBlogger. Welcome to Episode 152 of the ProBlogger podcast where today I want to issue you with a challenge to create a certain type of piece of content in the vein of our Blogging Groove Challenge which we did about six weeks ago. Before I tell you about today’s challenge which I know many of you are looking forward to and have been asking for, I want to just let you know that the ProBlogger event just finished in the last few days. I'm just back from it, I'm feeling both excited and exhausted. Most of my team are as well, but mainly excited and mainly inspired. I'm probably going to do an episode in the coming weeks on some of the themes of the event because there were quite a few themes that many of the speakers really referred to without us really coordinating those messages at all. Today, I want to just mention one thing that I noticed. One of the most common things I heard at the event this year was about this podcast. We did have quite a few tracks on podcasting at the event this year. I was amazed how many listeners of this podcast there are. I see the stats everyday and I know that we’ve had close to 1.6 million downloads over the years but it’s kind of nice to hear the voices of people who listen to the podcast because you hear mine everyday. It was really nice. Quite a few people told me they actually came to the event because they found ProBlogger through the podcast and that was really nice to hear. I often wondered how do people come to ProBlogger and was the podcast bringing new readers in. I knew it was reaching existing readers, so it was nice to see some new readers coming in. People typing into iTunes search terms and using iTunes as a search engine, that was a nice reminder to me. Also, people who found me through interviews that I’ve done on other people’s podcast. That was interesting to me. Quite a few people told me about certain episodes that have brought about real change in their blogging. One of the things I did notice was that many people told me that it was the series of challenges that we’ve run that really have had a big impact. The most recent one, the Blogging Groove Challenge that we did back in Episode 137 forward. It was quite a few of you who really benefitted from that. One of the old series that we did, in fact the first series that I did back in the first episodes, 31 Days to Build A Better Blog, was something that quite a few people said that they’ve been going back to and doing again and again. I thought it might be worth just mentioning that early series that I did on this particular podcast because I know many of you have not started working your way backwards and through the episodes, the most recent ones.
