Science is all about rigorous testing, empirical evidence, and painstaking documentation, right? But even in the most state-of-the-art labs, you'll find researchers who hold on to quirky rituals, lucky charms, or, dare we say it, superstitions. In this podcast, Dr Yvonne Couch, Associate Professor at University of Oxford hosts a discussion that romps through the lighter side of scientific research by exploring the wonderful world of lab superstitions. From lucky pipettes to forbidden phrases, we're about to uncover the unofficial 'do's and don'ts' that researchers swear by, or at least, swear make for good anecdotes. -- This shows guests are: Dr Kamar Ameen-Ali, Lecturer in Biomedical Science at Teeside University. In addition to teaching, Kam is interested in How neuroinflammation following traumatic brain injury contributes to the progression of neurodegenerative diseases (such as Alzheimer's disease) that lead to dementia. Dr Soraya Meftah, Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the UK Dementia Research Institute at The University of Edinburgh. Soraya works in the space of Neurophysiology of dementia (synaptic, neuronal, network dysfunction). Tabitha Broadbelt just completed her PhD at The University of Edinburgh and is now a Postdoctoral Researcher at the MRC Brain Network Dynamics Unity at University of Oxford. In the Dupret Group, Tabitha uses optogenetics and large-scale single-unit recordings combined to study memory-guided behaviour. Dr Lauren Walker is an Alzheimer's Research UK Fellow at Newcastle University. Lauren complete her undergrad degree in Physiological Sciences, and worked in a technical role for 7 years before being inspired to return to study a PhD. Lauren now works in Neuropathology of Lewy body dementia and Alzheimer's disease. -- Full biographies on all our guests and a transcript can be found on our website https://www.dementiaresearcher.nihr.ac.uk -- Like what you hear? Ask Your Mentor Podcast, from Dementia Researcher, in association with Alzheimer's Research UK (ARUK). Mentees interviewing their mentors, talking careers, lessons learned and what they've discovered, that could help you forge a successful career in dementia research. In this podcast PhD Student Elizabeth (Lizzie) English from University of Cambridge interviews her mentor (and regular Dementia Researcher Blogger) Dr Kamar Ameen-Ali, Lecturer at Teeside University. Lizzie is a PhD candidate at University of Cambridge and a proud first-generation student. Her PhD project is attempting to characterise disease-associated protein aggregates throughout the time-course of Alzheimer's Disease, in terms of aggregate size, shape, number and brain region localisation, through single-molecule fluorescence microscopy methods. I hope to investigate the potential toxicity mechanisms of these aggregates, to aid understanding of the causes of AD onset and progression. Kamar is a Lecturer in Biomedical Science at Teesside University & Affiliate Researcher at Glasgow University. In addition to teaching, Kamar is exploring how neuroinflammation following traumatic brain injury contributes to the progression of neurodegenerative diseases that lead to dementia. Having first pursued a career as an NHS Psychologist, Kamar went back to University in Durham to look at rodent behavioural tasks to completed her PhD, and then worked as a regional Programme Manager for NC3Rs. In 197 AD, the armies of Septimius Severus and Clodius Albinus met at Lugdunum, on the site of present day Lyon. If we believe the numbers given in Cassius Dio, this was the greatest and bloodiest clash between two Roman armies in history. 300,000 soldiers were present in total, according to Dio. The numbers are debated, but nevertheless the titanic scale of this clash in ancient history is clear to see. In this episode Tristan speaks to Dr Jonathan Eaton about the lead up to the battle, how Severus and Albinus went from friends to foes, and whether we can really call this the biggest battle in Roman history. British Ultra-Runner Sharon Gayter has come a long way, quite literally, since enduring a difficult childhood that left her socially scarred and lacking confidence to take part in any sport.  Now at the age of 55 she has clocked up too many miles to count with record-breaking performances around world that have fueled her ambition for yet more milestones.  Sharon has gone from bus-driver to university lecturer turning her life around as her world has pivoted around her running career.  She has run over 1,500 races over 30,000 miles and represented her country at Ultra Marathons for 18 years but who’s counting.  Her world records include Land’s End to John O’Groats in England and Mizen Head to Malin Head in Ireland.  Sharon has set three world records at Teeside University running on the treadmill; her 833km in 7 days is still 6km ahead of the men in the 2018 Guinness World Records book. In January 2018 she completed 10 marathons in 10 days on a treadmill and we will hear about her plans this year to break more world records. Higher education - crisis or change? A special programme exploring the role, meaning and future of a university education in a globalised world. It was once assumed that university graduates, particularly those from working class backgrounds, had a route to social mobility via a degree. Sara Goldrick-Rab, Professor of Higher Education Policy and Sociology at Temple University, tells Laurie Taylor why her new study suggests the end of the American dream of self improvement. Half the students, in her sample of 3,000 disadvantaged young adults, dropped out of college due to a lack of financial resources. Lorenza Antonucci, Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Teeside University, compared the lives of students in England, Italy and Sweden and found that, contrary to what is assumed by HE policies, participating in university education now exacerbates inequality. Thomas Docherty, Professor of English and of Comparative Literature at the University of Warwick, joins the discussion, placing these developments in the context of an increasing marketisation of education which, he argues, has turned the university into the servant of the economy. Producer: Jayne Egerton.
