Sixteen-year-old Thomas Weir, from Scotland, and Gerry Doherty, 63, from Byre in Co Donegal, were drowned on 17 July 2018 when their small boat sank off Malin Head. Ar an 17 Iúil 2018 a báthadh Thomas Weir, sé bliana déag d'aois, as Albain, agus Gerry Doherty, 63 bliain, as an Bheart i gCo Dhún na nGall, nuair a chuaigh a mbád beag síos amach ó Chionn Mhálanna. He confirmed today that he had called the emergency services by a telephone registered in the North shortly after 10 o'clock that morning. Dúirt sé gur chuimhin leis a rá ar an bhfón go raibh an bád suite amach ó Chionn Mhálanna agus go raibh sí ag dul faoi uisce, ach nár éirigh leis an scairt a chríochnú. Malin Head Coast Guard manager Derek Flanagan at the time said the worker on duty that morning, Seán Diver, did not know enough about the veracity of the emergency call which lasted only 27 seconds and did not know where the boat was. because of that. Kickstarting his ultra-cycling career with the Race Around Ireland in 2009, it has been a roller coaster of a ride with many mountains and kilometres climbed to get to where he is today in his ultra-cycling career. Toeing the start line of the Race Around Ireland on numerous occasions since his first attempt at the event he has dealt with the lows of a number of disappointing DNF's and the highs of finishing on the podium in both the Full and Ultra distance events.  With a 2nd & 3rd place in both the Full and Ultra events at Race Around Ireland, he has his target set to make it to the top step of the podium in the Ultra race in 2022 after what might be considered a breakthrough season this year.  Crippled with stomach issues and a knee that gives him plenty of bother whilst racing, that has both, in turn, affected his performances over the years, he has through the intervention and guidance of performance nutritionist Jillian Mooney found some relief for his stomach issues that have seen him perform at the level this season that he knew he was capable of.  This Summer, Seán won the Donegal Atlantic Way Ultra 555k Unsupported Race and the TJB Coastal 330 mile race before going on to set a new record for the 571k route from Mizen Head to Malin Head in a time of 17:20. That's an average of 33kph over the distance which included around 4,500m of climbing. With his eyes on the prize of the top step on the podium in the Race Around Ireland Ultra in 2022, a possible faster record attempt for that Mizen to Malin Route and the expected arrival of a new addition to the Hernon household early next year, there are exciting things to come for the man referred to fondly as the 'Bear' Hernon.

We catch up with Darach Ó Murchú to learn more about his new documentary exploring the power of nature and also the challenges that it has faced in Ireland during the Covid-19 pandemic. Cumhacht an Nádúir is a new two-part documentary for TG4 that looks at the solace nature has offered during this pandemic and how it may fuel the debate for a broader range of wildlife habitat and land management. A positive consequence of the coronavirus is the way in which it has led many of us to value and explore our natural surroundings. Access to wilderness areas, coastlines and parklands has provided much needed solace during this pandemic. In this two-part documentary, Cumhacht an Nádúir, we find out if this greater awareness has been of any benefit to wildlife, and whether a greater natural balance can emerge from the lockdown experience. What happens when sites fall strangely and beautifully silent, when nature is given a chance to breathe and to revive? Has this twelve-month period implanted a greater need to protect and expand our wilderness areas? In the hands of presenter Darach Ó Murchú, an environmental educator who was given permission to travel outside of his own restricted area, we visit some of Ireland's most celebrated destinations and tourist sites: Malin Head, the Blaskets, Glendalough, and Garnish Island, as well as community spaces and local areas of beauty. We capture these locations during a near total absence of visitors and we consider how wildlife has behaved in their absence. Post-lockdown, we return to evaluate how these landscapes could be better managed in the crucial years ahead.

This week I'm joined by Carrigallen brothers Ken & Cormac Doonan ahead of their second time participating at the Malin 2 Mizen Cycle 4 CF (Cystic Fibrosis) this May and their fundraising event in Carthy's Lock 17 this Saturday evening. The brothers are joined on the show by Caroline Heffernan, a CF Advocate with Cystic Fibrosis, to tell us a little about the disease and the effect that these events and the funds they raise have on those who live with the disease. Ken talks about his cousin who has Cystic Fibrosis and when he went looking for an event to take part in after completing the Wicklow 200 so when he saw an advert for the Cycle4CF he decided to take part and with a little gentle persuasion he recruited Cormac to the adventure. A 640km cycle takes place from Malin Head to Mizen Head with 40 cyclists leaving Donegal on the the 7th May to raise funds for the charity stopping in Bundoran, Oranmore and Mallow before reaching the most southern point of the county four days later on the 10th March. Caroline, herself living with CF, tells us about the improvements in medication, resources and grants which have hugely improved the quality of life of patients as well as extending the life expectancy of sufferers across the country. Cormac & Ken tell us about their fundraising efforts with a night of music and entertainment with 'Bite The Bullet' in Carthy's Bar, Leitrim Village this Saturday evening, 22nd February 2020. Shrine Nineteen: a parent's farewell.  Location: 55.377184, -7.367148 Ireland's most northerly point overlooks the crashing waves of the Atlantic. Far removed from any city lights, this is the best place in Ireland to witness the full spectacle of the night sky and of a chance to see the Northern Lights. Salute the stars and marvel at this jewel of the north for nowhere else on the island are you more connected with the cosmos than here.  Historically, it is from this lonely point that all major news events from our American cousins reached Europe; from the Yukon gold rush to the assassination of Lincoln, the Lloyd's tower mast on Banba's Crown received the news first. it is also where families bid a final farewell to the many emigrant boats to America, where bonfires were lit and boats sounded their horns in recognition before sailing over the horizon and to a new future.  As such, this site is a shrine to the lost generations who waved frantically back at their loved ones, watching the fires burn on this hill until they were out of sight. An area rich with flora and fauna and the freshest air in Ireland, ensure you walk from the Napoleonic tower on Banba's Crown hill to Malin Head itself taking in such curious sights as Hell's Hole and Devil's Bridge along the way. Good sea angling, hillwalking and birdwatching. Find it with ease on the Donegal's Hallowed Sites GPS tour: http://donegalapp.com/tours/donegals-hallowed-sites/

Racontour Archive 2008 - 2019

Amid the chatter and the buzz of the room, I discreetly asked my friend ‘any sign of him?'. ‘Nah, he's not coming' was the reply. The elusive Brian Friel was nowhere to be seen. The setting was the Backroom bar of McGrory's of Culdaff in north Donegal at the commencement of the 24th Charles Macklin autumn school, an annual arts festival paying tribute to a local 18th century actor/playwright who achieved great success on the London stage and died aged close to 107. Friel's 'The London Vertigo' was a reworking of Macklin's original play. The opening event was a book launch and its author, Sean Beattie, referred to Brian Friel by stating that the playwright had been good enough to have attended the first Macklin festival, eventually becoming its patron. ‘He usually makes an appearance at some stage over the weekend' said Sean sheepishly alluding to the fact that Friel was still nowhere to be seen. Friel hadn't been seen at his friend Seamus Heaney's funeral in Dublin, nor at the MacGill Summer school in Glenties which he never misses. At 83 and in poor health, it looked as if the man had the good sense to stay put and get an early night. A break in the formalities allowed more chat and some of Sean's books to be sold and signed to the sounds of a local traditional group of musicians. At the recommencement, I looked around the room and there he was right in front of me. Looking frail and older than I'd remembered him, Friel sat across the room with his wife Ann, listening to the speeches. The first speaker ironically told the story of a woman who talked for longer than she should have at a theatre launch in Greencastle some years back. She talked about John Hume being on a mobile phone to a man named Bill beside her as that longwinded speech took place. Once off the phone, she asked Hume who that guy was – ‘Bill Clinton' he responded ‘I should have put you on to him for the craic' he added for good measure. ‘That was when I nearly became very famous!' she declared and the crowd gave her a faint laugh at this tenuous aimless tale. Friel sat stoney-faced. I enjoyed his honesty – it was a dire story. Friel didn't have to be there. It was very much a courtesy to the organisers. He had travelled from Greencastle as he always had on the opening night without fail for 24 years. The speeches carried on and Friel combined listening to them with reading the copy of Sean's book he had on his lap. More references were made to Friel and even a round of applause was offered at one point. Friel carried on reading, oblivious to it all. Just like Philadelphia's Gar, there is a public and a private persona at play here. In private, Friel is renowned as a great wit, full of stories and gossip and fun. In public, he runs a wary gauntlet, unsure of who will accost him or put him straight on how he should have done such and such. The playwright has never enjoyed the limelight, nor is he prone to speeches, interviews or indulging in the fame game. His craft has made him world famous. Much and all as I'd always hoped he would win the Nobel Prize, I'm glad he hadn't that day. Instead, new Nobel Laureate Alice Ann Munro was being harangued in Canada by the media frenzy while Friel was able to keep a long-standing appointment in Culdaff. Outside for some air, I heard the name-dropping earlier speaker telling the young publisher that she knew Friel well and would he like her to introduce him to the playwright. Back inside, the last of the great Irish writers sat quietly after the speeches catching up with some well wishers he knew. My friend who had known him for years went to chat to him about Frank McGuinness's new play on in Dublin for the Theatre Festival. The poker face had given way to animation about his fellow playwright and anecdotes galore. Health prevented him from getting around so hearing about what was going on in the Big Smoke was a real treat. My same friend had met him up in Malin Head the day after Heaney had died. Friel ...

In a year when Derry-Londonderry takes centre stage as the UK City of Culture, Helen Mark steps out into the city's back garden to explore the hidden gems of the Inishowen Peninsula. Located at the northernmost tip of Ireland where it meets with the Atlantic Ocean, and with Lough Foyle to the east and Lough Swilly to the west, Inishowen is rich in history, heritage and landscape, with more than its fair share of undiscovered delights. Helen Mark begins her journey at the Glenevin Waterfall with American, Doris Russo. Now in her 90s, Doris first visited Donegal almost 20 years ago when she fell in love with the area and bought Glen House with its adjoining land and beautiful, yet inaccessible, waterfall. Helen hears how Doris took it upon herself to clear the brambles and undergrowth that blocked the route to the waterfall and so began a project that would take years to reach fruition with the help of the local community and volunteers. There are very few people in the area now without a friend or relative who has been involved in the Glenevin Waterfall including farmer, Michael Devlin, who tells Helen of his own experiences of the waterfall as a child. At the northern tip of Inishowen Helen meets writer, Cary Meehan, to visit the atmospheric Bocan Stone Circle at Malin Head. Cary has made a promise with herself to visit a sacred place every week and feels that these are places that give people a divine connection that there really are no words for. Heading back along the shores of Lough Foyle, Helen stops off for a kayak trip out on the waters with Adrian Harkin before making her way back to the border. Before she leaves Inishowen, Helen makes one last stop to meet Dessie McCallion who takes Helen to one of his favourite hidden gems, a woodland near the village of Muff where he walks and feeds the red squirrels who call the woodland home.
