Dr Kamar Ameen-Ali narrates her blog written for Dementia Researcher. In this blog, Kam explores whether dementia could be understood as a form of accelerated brain ageing. Drawing on neuropathological evidence and the concept of biological age, she discusses the continuum between normal ageing and neurodegenerative disease, the role of risk and protective factors, and the potential of brain age measurement for early prediction of dementia. The blog also urges caution in relying solely on biomarkers for diagnosis, and argues for a more nuanced understanding of brain health across the lifespan. Dr Kamar Ameen-Ali narrates her blog written for Dementia Researcher. In this blog Kamar discusses the inequalities in access to new Alzheimer's disease treatments following the UK approval of lecanemab and donanemab in 2024. Although these drugs were hailed as a breakthrough, they were not recommended for NHS use due to their high cost, limited efficacy, and safety concerns, meaning only those who can afford private treatment will benefit. This decision disproportionately affects lower socioeconomic groups, who are already at greater risk of developing dementia - not to mention others in low and middle income countries. With nearly a million people living with dementia in the UK, Kam stresses the need for a healthcare system capable of delivering future treatments equitably. Today we're diving into how nutrition intersects with the complicated world of pain. Today I have former guest and colleague Prof. Dr Deepak Ravindran to talk to us about how our immune system can impact our perception of pain, the different types of pain patients and how we can do better as medical professionals in the management of chronic pain. This topic covers IBS, pelvic pain, chronic cystitis, fibromyalgia, migraine, functional gut disorders, long covid and more. Pain cannot be explained by a singular pathway, and I think there is so much we could all learn from Deepak's insights on this topic. We discuss the different types of pain patients, how the immune system trains our responses to pain, how trauma in childhood can impact our responses to pain and why food plays a pivotal role.Deepak is Honorary Professor at Teesside University and has worked as an NHS Consultant in Pain management, he's author of the “Pain Free Mindset” a fantastic book that I recommend to both patients and medical colleagues. His new role is Director of Lifestyle Medicine for a primary care network (PCN) of GP practices in Reading, UK, working upstream to bring these insights early in the chain of pain management. We talk about the use of fasting, anti-inflammatory diets, the importance of gut supportive diets and key ingredients that could be useful for chronic pain sufferers.

Dr Kamar Ameen-Ali narrates her blog written for Dementia Researcher. The blog discusses Functional Cognitive Disorder (FCD), a condition that mimics dementia due to overlapping clinical symptoms such as cognitive impairment. While FCD shares similarities with dementia, including changes in memory and thinking, a key difference is that FCD is not degenerative. Unlike dementia, where brain cells are progressively lost, FCD involves dysfunction in how brain cells function and communicate. Diagnosis of FCD is complex, as it can sometimes be mistaken for dementia, but it should be based on identifying unique clinical features, such as internal inconsistency in cognitive performance. Improving diagnostic specificity is crucial to avoid misdiagnosis and ensure appropriate treatment for those with non-disease-related cognitive impairments like FCD Find the original text, and narration here on our website. https://www.dementiaresearcher.nihr.ac.uk/blog-mimicking-dementia-what-is-functional-cognitive-disorder/ -- Dr Kamar Ameen-Ali is a Lecturer in Biomedical Science at Teesside University & Affiliate Researcher at Glasgow University. Highlighting the specific challenges faced by women and racial/ethnic minorities, she discusses the importance of role models who reflect diverse demographic characteristics to inspire and guide underrepresented groups. Kamar argues that having role models in senior academic positions can help challenge the status quo and break the cycle of underrepresentation, thus fostering a more inclusive and diverse academic environment. The Northern Agenda editor speaks to two experts from Teesside University so that hopefully when you hear politicians talking about hydrogen and net zero on the news in the coming weeks, you'll know what they're talking about. Dr Venkatesan Venkata Krishnan, a senior lecturer in chemical engineering, and Professor Nashwan Dawood from the Net Zero Industry Innovation Centre, explain just why hydrogen could be so important for the region.   *** And a new report by the Onward think tank and Northern Research Group of Tory MPs says Northern football clubs are under threat with areas set to lose the “lifeblood” of their communities without Government intervention. It's a particularly timely report as this week the first details have emerged of what's being described as the biggest shake-up in football ownership in years. The Football White Paper, expected to be published as early as next week, follows a fan-led review into the beautiful game in November 2021. But will it be enough to save more clubs from following the grim fate of clubs like Bury, who were expelled from the league in 2019 and have still yet to return, or Bolton and Wigan, whose very future was thrown into doubt after being placed into administration? Alex Luke, Senior Researcher at Onward, joins Rob on the podcast to discuss the new report. *** The Northern Agenda is a Laudable production for Reach. Joining Chris and Alex for this rundown of the society as an “international organisation dedicated to the study of animation history and theory” is the current SAS President, Dr Chris Pallant (Canterbury Christ Church University), previously a special guest on our Bagpuss (Peter Firmin & Oliver Postgate, 1974) episode of the podcast. Listen as they discuss the origins of the society and its founding back in 1987, and the contribution of its members towards the consolidation of Animation Studies as a specialist discipline; the society's growth as an international space of knowledge exchange and networking among animation practitioners, artists, and academics; the commitment of SAS to create a diverse intellectual environment both in-person and online that is accessible for (and to) a range of interdisciplinary audiences; and how to get involved in the society's many activities, from its online blog animationstudies2.0 to its range of Special Interest Groups (SIGs). **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**

Getting to Know Ally - committee member for VIDMAlly Anderson is a newly qualified midwife at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough, UK. She was a secondary science teacher for thirteen years before embarking on a change of career and going back to study again at Teesside University. Ally's first degree was in Anatomy and Physiology and she has a PGCE and Masters in Education. Ally has four children and a husband who keep her busy in between placements and study! As part of her studies, Ally took the whole family to Tanzania in 2018 for her elective placement. This experience was invaluable in demonstrating that there are so many things we can all learn from each other whether you are a student, midwife or doctor and whether you work in a well-resourced city hospital in a high-income country or a small village hospital in a low-income country. Ally's elective placement has enthused her interest in ‘normal' childbirth, breastfeeding and respectful maternity care.Due to Ally's previous role, she is passionate about midwifery education – for students, preceptor midwives and qualified midwives for their continued professional development. In the future, Ally is keen that everyone all over the world should be able to have access to a contemporary and innovative midwifery education. The VIDM is one way that this could be achieved. She loves working with the wonderful, diverse members of the VIDM committee! You can find out more about the VIDM on https://vidm.org/
