I had 5 minutes with the legend C. Andrew Nelson this past weekend at Thunder Con. Check it out! C. Andrew Nelson is an award winning artist, actor, writer, consultant, and motivational speaker. Andrew spent four years as a visual effects artist at Industrial Light & Magic. His VFX credits at ILM include Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Galaxy Quest, Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle, The Perfect Storm, Jurassic Park III, The Time Machine, and Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. Prior to joining ILM, Andrew worked nearly six years at LucasArts Entertainment Company where he served as a visual effects supervisor. At LucasArts he helped create and design such popular games as Dark Forces, Rebel Assault II, Full Throttle, The Dig, Jedi Knight, Curse of Monkey Island, Masters of Teras Kasi, Shadows of the Empire, Rogue Squadron, and Indiana Jones & the Infernal Machine. Andrew has worked extensively with sister companies Lucasfilm Ltd., Lucas Learning, Lucas Licensing, and THX. Andrew is probably best known for having played the character of Darth Vader in the Special Edition re-release of the original Star Wars trilogy as well as in the Rebel Assault II and Dark Forces games from LucasArts. Andrew, who began playing Vader for Lucasfilm in 1994, has portrayed the infamous dark lord for commercials, television shows, print, games, and live appearances. He has managed to spend more time in the official Vader costume than any other actor. In addition to his tenure with the Lucas companies, C. Andrew Nelson is a consulting VFX supervisor and art director for some of the top effects, animation, and post-production facilities in the U.S. His credits include Rocky Balboa, The Last Mimzy, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Rush Hour 3, Enchanted, The Kite Runner, The Spiderwick Chronicles, Jumper, Race to Witch Mountain, and Witness 11. Andrew also served two terms on the Board of Directors of the Visual Effects Society. No stranger to academia, from 2002 to 2004 Andrew took on the role of Visual Effects Director for the School of Animation & Visual Effects at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. At the university, he presided over the school's visual effects curriculum and trained the next generation of VFX artists who are now working throughout the industry. Andrew routinely consults for various networks, studios, and developers such as Disney, MTV, Nickelodeon, PBS, Fox, Hasbro, Electronic Arts, and others. When he's not at a workstation conjuring up images for motion pictures and television or speaking on the lecture circuit, Andrew can be found in front of the camera or behind a microphone as a performer. Andrew has appeared in numerous feature films, television series, commercials, and print ads. He has shot national spots for ESPN, Wal-Mart, M&Ms, Taco Bell, and Kenner. Andrew is also a much sought after voice-over artist having lent his vocal talents to many games, animated films, and interactive multimedia projects. He currently co-produces and directs full-cast audio dramas with his business partner Jerry Cornell and their company Adventurous Ideas, LLC. Andrew and his wife Veronica Loud - a gifted actress, voiceover artist, singer, model, and photographer - live in the San Francisco Bay Area with their daughter and son.
One person you may have seen in the Boba Fett tv spot the other day was this character, she's new to the Star Wars screen, however she's been around for a long time in Star Wars legends. This is most likely Arden Lyn. She was first seen in the game Star Wars masters of Teras kasi. She was basically a dark jedi. She and her boyfriend Xendor were leaders of a split faction of the Jedi Order, known as the legions of Lettow. They were evil jedi essentially. Legions of Lettow eventually were destroyed in a war later on with the Jedi. Her synopsis can be seen here from the 1997 game guide book - Arden was thousands of years old. She was reawakened by the emperor's inquisitors, which back in the 90's weren't the inquisitors we know today. These were like henchmen that Palpatine had. So, now that the emperor is dead, and Vader is dead, what will Arden Lyn's purpose be? She at this point for all we know is autonomous and is bound by no one. Teras Kasi was a martial art in Star Wars that focused on mastering ones body. It incorporated meditation and some jedi traits and abilities, however they weren't jedi. That being said, Plo Koon and Darth maul were proficient in Teras Kasi. It allowed the user to make their body a weapon. Kind of like bruce lee's one punch and beyond. Their punches could compete with blaster fire in terms of lethal ability. Arden could punch through body armour, which makes me think she could take out Boba if they got in close quarters. I think she's going to be a big character in the book of Boba Fett, and I'm honesty super surprised they'd bring this forgotten legends character into canon, I'm really excited for it and I wonder if she'll work with boba or against him. A short time ago, in a podcast right on your rss feed...Bro and Murph team up with the music meister himself: Jack! Jack's music mastery means little when we talk about everything but that! We talk about Jack's recent interest in JRPGs and Dragon Quest XI. Bro talks about The Last Hero of Nostalgaia (its second appearance in whatcha playin), Murph plays the Undying and Crusader Kings 3. We take a refresher on licensed fighting games before tackling the final boss of the episode. Our game of the week is a Star Wars fighting game with a reputation as ugly as its being. We spend just as much time talking about the expanded universe and other Star Wars missteps almost as much as we talk about the game itself. Teras Kasi involves a lot of arm flapping, and speaking of arms Chewbacca does some weird stuff with the arm he ripped off. We play a game of wookie-pyke-sentry guard, Lando really is a robo-sexual, the Kessel run was done in 12.9997 parsecs, and the coaxium switch was actually a really good plan. We close out Solo, a part 2 would have actually been great. Hashtag confirmed, Han shot first. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/nerdpostpodcast/support

All this and MORE on the first episode of TWG's new Star Wars cast, This is The Way.
This past week, in a town in Massachusetts... Social Science FictionIt is a dark time for the podcast. Having launched a few weeks ago, the fledgling show works to amuse its audience with insightful commentary on a range of nerdy topics. However, while covering numerous settings, it has somehow overlooked what is perhaps the most beloved and popular nerdy franchise of all time. Eager to correct this oversight, the brilliant and handsome host of Social Science Fiction discusses the politics of Star Wars. Specifically, how do the Jedi fit into the Star Wars universe? Notes:1:04 - I highly recommend Shamus Young's blog (https://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/). Always interesting commentary. 1:32 - For those not into video games, Jedi: Fallen Order is the newest big Star Wars game. 2:52 - Unless, of course, we're talking about Masters of Teras Kasi. I do judge that game. 3:25 - Talking original trilogy Jedi. 3:52 - Akira Kurosawa was a Japanese director known for his samurai movies. He is remembered as being a remarkable filmmaker and having an enormous impact on the industry. 4:03 - And we can't forget Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces which inspired Lucas' story. 6:35 - Discussing the actual history of knights and samurai. 10:38 - The "Stirrup Thesis" was originally developed by Lynn Townsend White Jr. in Medieval Technology and Social Change. The theory continues to be debated in academia. 13:19 - Talking Jedi post-original trilogy. 16:49 - They don't have civilian positions that is. They do serve in the military. 17:09 - Discussing what the Jedi are, politically speaking. 17:28 - I couldn't find confirmation of this story. If any has the details, I'd love to hear them. 17:41 - There are religions that fit this description to some degree, focusing within their community and not preaching to the outside world. However, these groups rarely go looking for new members born outside the community as Jedi do. 21:51 - And honestly, who isn't familiar with the history of Saudi Arabia? 22:05 - Adherent prefer the term Salafism22:44 - Mecca and Medina are the two holiest sites in Islam. Both are located in present-day Saudi Arabia 25:59 - Daimyos were feudal lords who often employed samurai. 26:15 - A professional standing army is an army composed of full-time, professional soldiers. This is in contrast to mercenary-armies that were hired to fight for a short period of time, part-time militias composed of volunteers who have other jobs, and temporary conscript-armies of peasants forced to fight for when needed. 28:38 - Reevaluating the movies based on the preceding analysis. 31:15 - Knights stick around at least. The samurai would be eliminated by the government in the 1870s. 34:18 - An Ayn Rand reference. Atlas Shrugged is one of her most popular books which promotes her philosophy, known as Objectivism. Suffice to say that the Ferengi would probably be fans. 38:11 - Side Rant! 42:05 - Yes, more hated than any scene involving Jar Jar. 20 years ago, after a nasty split with Nintendo, Sony went on to create one of the best selling gaming consoles of all time in the original Sony PlayStation, and the world would never be the same again. Week in Geek: Andrew watched a heavily promoted Netflix-original, Grace and Frankie, while Dan reads the recently re-collected The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past comic work, as commissioned by Nintendo Power, and written & drawn by the legendary Shotaro Ishinomori. Don't Play: Dan and Andrew come at you with another game they do not recommend; and let's reinforce this aspect: DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME. This time, they discuss the absolute question mark that is Star Wars: Masters of Teras Kasi. *shudder* The Forced Evolution of Characters: In the wake of recently released images of fan-favorite character, Yoshimitsu, from Tekken 7, Andrew and Dan look back at characters from games, tv, and comics have changed so much over time and analyze why this happens, with both positive and negative intentions. Ownership Roundabout: Recently, famed comics writer and artist, Gerry Conway, posted a scathing review of his situation with DC Comics regarding royalties and ownership of character he created while in their employ. DC's brilliant but shady workaround paying or even crediting creators deserved a closer look from Dan and Andrew. Question of the Geek: Who (or what) is your favorite fighting game character? Why? You can leave your answer as a comment on the page for this episode at forall.libsyn.com. You can also respond, and join the conversations, at the official Facebook or Google+ pages. It's Memorial Day weekend in the USA, generally thought of as the "official" start of the summer movie season (though more and more films are opening well beforehand every year). This weekend it's Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End. But 30 years ago it was Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. To commemorate the occasion, we spend the second half of this episode talking about Star Wars as the series has appeared in video games.
