The Famous San Diego Chicken is the Babe Ruth of sports mascots. During this 39 minute interview, you'll better understand how the genius of Ted Giannoulas has forever changed our ball park experience.
He's not the typical professional athlete, but his resume reads like one: he was on the payroll of a professional team, he entertained fans and he performed athletic feats many would never dare. He also wore a mountain line costume. Kenn Solomon was Rocky, the Nuggets mascot, for over three decades and while he kept his mascot code of silence when in costume, now he's “just Kenn” and has plenty to talk about. Kenn grew up in Las Vegas and was self-taught gymnastics in his backyard. After seeing the San Diego Chicken at a minor league baseball game, he instantly had a career goal. He became his high school's mascot and did the same at two colleges. At Utah State, as a communications major, Kenn came to Denver during a summer to intern at the Rocky Mountain News. He decided to cold call the Nuggets and strike up a conversation about him being their mascot. The Nuggets didn't have a mascot, but they listened to his spiel. They didn't do anything right away, so Kenn kept calling. Eventually he auditioned for Rocky and won the gig. His 30+ years as Rocky saw him become a fan favorite and an attraction for the Nuggets, especially during some very down seasons on the hardwood. He made countless appearances off the court, endured a few injuries (including breaking his back) and a life changing lesson after spending a weekend in jail. His retirement came after the Nuggets won their NBA championship and a transition to the new Rocky was set up for one of Kenn's three sons. Drake Solomon held the role for a while until he had to step aside to rehab an injury. The Nuggets decided to go a different direction. Now Kenn is going in a different direction with lots of open doors and opportunities between public speaking, podcasting and writing a book. Listen to Kenn's story and conversation with Susie Wargin on the Cut Traded Fired Retired Podcast.
In Episode 408, Patrick, Jeffrey, and Craig chat about youth sports and then discuss five mostly baseball topics.1. Not Everybody Gets to Go To Space, and That's Okay: Not everybody gets to go the playoffs either, and some teams are struggling to get there more than others.2. How to Get to Heaven from Fort Myers, FL: One of the weirder baseball topics we've had on the pod, as a Twins draft pick gets cut for tipping pitches to the other team in a Florida State League pennant race. 3. Here We Are Now Going to the South Side: One of the lest surpriing topics we've had on the pod, as the White Sox announce they will be cutting payroll 4. Around the Horn: Brands on helmets, extension updates for a star and a GM, and Chase Anderson starts to get ready for his 2025 season.5. Craig once again forgets the name of a game he hates, so it's an unplesant surprise for him.Five and Dive is listener-supported, you can join our Patreon at patreon.com/fiveanddive. The baseball season is winding down but we're just getting started. Jeff made a trip to Forbes Field, or what is left of it and visited the site of a former guests historic pitch, the new Contemporary Baseball Era Committee Hall of Fames names dropped, we pick them up, there's a new baseball league for old names, Stew being Stew and we remember Frank Howard who recently passed away. Our main story this week is about the indelible Roberto Clemente and one neither of us had heard before. We open an investigation into whether or not Clemente was actually kidnapped at gun point in San Diego. While doing so we might have also found something incredible in regards to the actual origin of the San Diego Chicken. Wax Pack Heroes focuses on 1991as our season hits the stretch run. It's an all new That Real Blind Tech show. Brian and Ed welcome Mike Walsh, Founder of Flight For Sight to the show. We kick things off discussing Mike's back story being diagnosed with Usher's Syndrome in his twenties, and how Ushers began to change his life in his thirties. The three of us then compare notes about when we put the car keys down for the last time. We then dive in to a topic we never ever thought we would discuss on That Real Blind Tech Show, professional mascots, as Mike was a professional mascot for ten years. We get the low down on the San Diego Chicken and Philly Fanatic, and Ed outs himself about a high school job he had. Mike then tells us about traveling the world with low vision in 2014, and how his experiences led to him founding Flight For Sight. A couple of his highlights include traveling to Ethiopia and attending South by Southwest not in Ethiopia. Mike then hits Brian up with a question, what is preventing Brian from traveling these days. We then dive in to what Flight For Sight is all about and start discussing the current $10,000 grant give aways they are running for blind and visually impaired people to travel all over the world. Make sure to visit their website. We discuss the application process and how the grant winners will be selected. Want to apply for the grant, but having trouble getting started with your own travel idea, why not visit Flight For Sight's idea page. One of our biggest goals is to help build triathlon. Today we look at why we think splitting the Ironman World Championship between Kona and Nice seems like a really bad idea. We look at other alternatives and talk about why we think Ironman should focus more on building from the ground up. We look at analogies with other sports and how it can work better than the current Ironman model. We talk about why it's more powerful to make one event great rather than making two sort of good ones. Do most triathletes even care? Lots of interesting discussion. Topics: 2 World Championship in different parts of the world Women in Kona, Men in Nice This doesn't impact the majority of triathletes Always comes back to money Short term fixes Max the Clown Patkin and Harry the Juggler or the San Diego Chicken? NFL - Military uniforms and breast cancer awareness Does the split between Kona and Nice help grow the sport? Couples racing together Pros, men, women all together is part of the mystique What's this do to the cost and price? Can we get regular race participation up instead? Para mutual betting? Welcome to June 17th, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a dessert that keeps on rolling and a mascot who keeps us laughing. The German word “strudel” literally means “swirl,” which makes sense if you think of its whirlpool shape. This flaky, fruit-filled pastry was created in 1696 and became very popular during the Habsburg Dynasty. Today apple strudel is still one of Austria's most famous dishes, but you may not know that at one time it was also the official state pastry of Texas. That's because German settlers brought strudel to America and won over this part of the country. While many flavors of strudel exist both savory and sweet, the apple kind has remained a favorite. This is probably because apples can be found during good times and bad, and on National Apple Strudel Day, you can count on this dessert to inspire celebration. In 1974, Ted Giannoulas was hired to dress in a chicken costume for an event at the city's world-famous San Diego Zoo. Ted was a big fan of the Padres baseball team and worked out a deal to wear the costume during games. His intent was to be able to watch the Padres for free, but the mascot's appearances at games became a sensation. Even when the team wasn't playing well, people would show up to the stadium simply to see the San Diego Chicken's antics. Dancing, chasing around players, joking with the umpires…he did it all. For nearly 50 years, the Chicken entertained audiences and became the most famous team mascot of all time. On National Mascot Day, celebrate the folks who are willing to “take one for the team” to keep fans entertained even when their teams are stinking it up on the field I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Episode #113 features Ted Giannoulas, AKA World Famous Sports Mascot, The San Diego Chicken and Randall Thompson, President and Founder of Dugout Mugs, and BBQ Gift IdeasTed Giannoulas dressed in his first chicken costume in 1974 when he was a 20-year-old college journalism major and from those humble beginnings he became one of the world's most famous sports mascots, known as the San Diego Chicken. Since then has made more than 5,000 appearances in over 900 different facilities, 50 states, and eight countries while wearing out more than 100 chicken suits. The San Diego Chicken has been featured on magazine covers, music video's, movies, television shows and commercials, and even made an appearance with President Ronald Reagan. In 1981 the San Diego Chicken co-starred on the Saturday morning children's television series, The Baseball Bunch with his fellow co-stars, Johnny Bench and Tommy Lasorda. The hit show ran for five seasons and featured tons of exceptional MLB players offering their baseball advice and playing tips. The success of the San Diego Chicken helped lead to mascots becoming widespread throughout professional sports. The Chicken was named one of the 100 most powerful people in sports for the 20th century by The Sporting News. The New York Times called him "perhaps the most influential mascot in sports history."Randall Thompson is the president and founder of Dugout Mugs. The idea for these drinking mugs which are made from baseball bats started in 2014 when Thompson was coaching at Florida Tech and the hitting coach was telling the players to, "Focus on the hands." To emphasize the point, the coach cut off the top of a baseball bat and left the barrel sitting on the bench. Thompson saw this tossed away piece of wood as a chance to create a drinking cup. Thankfully his creative skills were better than his baseball skills as he started the company after being released by a minor league affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. As he reflects upon in the interview, the Blue Jays may have released him too soon, but rather than languishing in the minors, he founded a company and a team of employees that are quite special. There are many items which will make excellent gifts. Go to https://dugoutmugs.com/ to learn more.In between the interviews, Jeff and Len offer ideas for the many gifts available for barbecue and even baseball lovers, as we are in the season of giving. We conclude the show with the beautiful song, "Ace and Bobo" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We recommend you go to Fifth & Cherry, https://fifthandcherry.com for wonderful cutting boards and http://www.baseballbbq.com for grill tools and clothing for barbecue and baseball fans and the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag.We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe.If you would like to contact the show, we would love to hear from you.Call the show: (516) 855-8214Email: baseballandbbq@gmail.comTwitter: @baseballandbbqInstagram: baseballandbarbecueYouTube: baseball and bbqWebsite: https://baseballandbbq.weebly.comFacebook: baseball and bbq

This Chicken Drew A Crowd For Nearly 50 Years, Making It The Most Famous Team Mascot Of All Time! Welcome to June 17th, 2021 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate the characters and the desserts that keep the good times on a roll. In 1974, a guy was hired to dress in a chicken costume for an event at the city's world-famous San Diego Zoo. Ted Giannoulas was a big fan of the Padres baseball team and worked out a deal to wear the costume during games. His intent was to be able to watch the Padres for free, but the mascot's appearances at games soon made him into a sensation. Even when the team wasn't playing well, people would show up to the stadium simply to see the San Diego Chicken's antics. Dancing, chasing around players, joking with the umpires…he did it all. For nearly 50 years, the Chicken entertained audiences and became the most famous team mascot of all time. On National Mascot Day, we celebrate the folks who are willing to “take one for the team” to keep fans entertained even when their teams are stinking it up on the field. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day.
In this episode, Patrick came back for being sick last week and wrapped up the mascot segment with Brendan. We overall agreed and had little trouble completing this list! Here is the big thing; we had disagreements backstage about The San Diego Chicken, Wally the Green Monster, and The Bird, So we are leaving it up to the Fans! Brendan thought the San Diego Chicken was incredible, while Patrick disagreed completely. Then When we did the AL, Patrick thought The Oriole Bird was the best mascot while Brendan defended Wally. We couldn't settle both disputes, so here is a link to a document so YOU can weigh in on this friendly banter! you can cast your votes, or say something positive about our podcast. We might start attaching a document every week so we can chat with the fans! So we hope you enjoyed this episode, and feel free to cast your votes! We will see you next time! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ZduynQgngYh03JKOaqPVDnrlbu2mT15MqUqiE5rTeeU/edit?usp=sharing
Mike Mulligan and David Haugh were joined by Dan Bernstein and Leila Rahimi for transition, where they discussed umpire Joe West breaking the MLB record for most games umpired as well as the San Diego Chicken and other team mascots of the past and present. Joe West broke the most games umped record yesterday and requested the San Diego Chicken... Then Gary dives into the Huskers figuring out how to get season ticket holders from the tailgates to the stadium!
Padres/Dodgers is currently the best rivalry in all of baseball! Fernando Tatis Jr. is the perfect hero and Trevor Bauer is the perfect villain. The San Diego Chicken gives us an update from the farm. Shawn Wickens hates this episode's Underdog Sport. Who's got the best Minor League jersey? All that and more, this week on Larry! So…I’d never heard of Barry Bremen. Apparently, he’s Michigan marketing executive who dressed as the San Diego Chicken, an umpire and a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader to sneak into big events. Bremen ended up in the third row at the 1985 Emmy Awards and jumped on stage to accept the supporting actress award for Betty Thomas. Bremen usually got caught and arrested, but he once said he didn’t mind paying bail [source: mercurynews.com].He seems to have gotten really famous from those stunts. We’ll be reading about a party crasher in our study of Luke this Sunday, reading Luke 7:36-50. She has been famous for much longer, and for far more noble reasons. This story in Luke is similar to ones in Mark, Matthew and John – though scholars mostly consider this to be a unique incident, not associated with the others.A good idea when reading this is to put yourself into the place of each the characters interacting with Jesus. Why do you suppose the Pharisee didn’t see himself as someone who had to be forgiven very much (the point of Jesus’ parable). The woman, on the other hand, seems overwhelmed by the forgiveness she received. Where do you fall on this line – as one who feels they’ve been forgiven little or much? How comfortable or uncomfortable are you in demonstrating your gratitude to Christ in worship? There’s a lot to ponder from this little vignette. In the parable, what did the debtors have to do in order to be forgiven what they owed? What does that tell us about the nature of our forgiven status? How might a knowledge of grace impact our sense of gratitude to God?Hopefully you can join us this Sunday at 10 AM as we dig into this wonderful gospel!Click here for a pdf version of the teaching slideshow.
In this episode Sean goes outside the foul line (or should we say fowl line) as he regales Eds with the story of Ted Giannoulas. A man who as fate would have it ended up dressed as a chicken and became the unofficial mascot of the San Diego Padres. Transforming mascots and sports entertainment as we know it.
Doug Vance is our guest on the podcast episode 119, as the former sports information director talks about his memories of covering the Racers from 1978-83. This was a golden age of revival for Racer men's basketball and football. Coach Ron Greene guided the men's basketball program back to a championship level as did Coach Mike Gottfried with MSU Football. Vance was there when Johnny Reagan's 1979 baseball team was one win from going to the College World Series and he covered Racer hall of famers including: Lamont Sleets, Danny Lee Johnson, George Greenfield, Ronald Hopkins, Terry Love, Andy Rice and coaches Johnny Reagan, Bennie Purcell and Frank Beamer. Vance also has a great story to tell about the time the San Diego Chicken made a visit to Racer Arena.
Luke is in San Diego, so Andrew assumes that he's hanging out with the San Diego Chicken. Which might actually be a turkey? Also, Twitter considers making a fundamental change that Luke would absolutely hate, even though it would be the best thing to ever happen for him. . . . Today's show is sponsored by Calm.
