Hey Everybody! Welcome back to the Bolton Ebikes Podcast. Today, I have a special guest. You probably actually know who she is, if you've been listening to the podcast for a while, or if you've ever emailed into Bolton Ebikes. Jessica was the first person I hired at Bolton Ebikes and handles everything behind the scenes at the podcast and the YouTube channel, and a lot of other stuff has never been on the podcast. We're not going to talk necessarily about what Jessica does as much as a trail system in an area in Arizona. So we'll get into that in just a minute. In today's episode you'll learn more about: What is The Loop and what does it offer within the city of Tucson, Arizona? What is advertised with Pima County as being allowed and not allowed? What are people saying on Facebook to voice their concerns based on their experience and need for an ebike. What happens if you ride an ebike on the loop? Is there anything being done to allow ebikers access to The Loop more often? What has Jess so fired up and what is she encouraging you all to do to join her? Thanks again for listening to the Bolton Ebikes Podcast, I do want to throw a little plug out for e bike search dot com. That's our new buy and sell marketplace for used electric bikes. Thanks Jessica for being on the podcast episode for the first time. Thank you. It was amazing if you are not on our email list for the podcast, make sure to go to ebike podcast.com. Very simple, easy to remember ebike podcast.com. The only thing we're going to send you our emails when new podcast episodes come out. Or maybe some occasional little tidbits about other models and ebike news. And of course, if you want video content, you can always go check out Bolton Ebikes on YouTube. And of course, Bolton ebikes dot com. If you want to buy a bike, we've got a lot of bikes coming in right now. Availability is getting better. Although lead times are still long for us on a lot of things. We do have a lot of bikes coming in very soon. Some of the lead times are reasonably short. So make sure to check out Bolton ebikes dot com. If you are looking for another bike or perhaps your first. In the very near future. Thanks again for listening, we will catch you on another Tuesday. Happy National Fudge Day! Is fudge a type of chocolate? Either way, we know we like it a choc-o-lot! Our Associate Caller of the Day was Zach at Store 2867 in Lansing, Michigan, who knew from the start he was the first caller of the day. We were just as excited to have you on the show, Zach! We received a modest but proud shoutout from Tony at Store 2650 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who gave himself a shoutout for his three-year anniversary! We're so happy you are a part of the team, Tony! Jessica at Store 6370 in Morristown, Tennessee, also gave her store a huge shout out, their first on the show! Thanks Jessica for allowing us to recognize your amazing team. It might be the first, but we know it won't be the last! Our Social Media Highlight of the day was from Store 1371 in Columbus, Indiana, congratulating Teresa, an OPD associate, on 30 years with Walmart! We also want to recognize Dennis from Club 6514 in Waterloo, Iowa, for always being ready to help and teach us new things. Have you ever had a restless night of sleep? Listen in now to hear what mammal only needs two hours of sleep a day! Here's a hint, it's larger than what you count to catch those Z's.
Mike opens up the show with a funny onsite story that involves this opening song, the avocado!!! We have Mike and Jessica from Belley Renovations, find them on IG @belleyrenovations and www.belleyrenovations.com Navigating the wonderful world of dream kitchen and bathrooms. There is a lot of thought put into the design and functionality of bathrooms and women dictate the start and finish line on that design and function. Manny just lets it all out and starts the conversation down a very interesting path discussing the luxury bathroom. We dive deep into the myth about “she” has the final say, Mike and Jessica agree that it doesn’t exist any longer. This show is revealing a number of ways to approach your current and new clients, pay close attention to the cues. We are recording the podcast at their home that is under renovations, shoemakers at their best. We get right into waterproofing and how it’s just put into the budget, not even giving the client any opportunity to question proper waterproofing for all of their wet areas. Construction is in the family, Mom was a site super for track residential, Grand Dad was a plumber, Uncle in HVAC, Dad was an Electrician, another Uncle that does Finish Carpentry, and Mike never thought he would get into construction and hated construction and during the family get togethers, it was always construction talk at the dinner table. Mike went into the culinary arts and cooking in some of the finest restaurants and was one of the best moves Mike ever made. The comparisons of being in culinary to construction are so similar and Mike learned a lot and it all prepared him for construction. Shout out to @livingstoncabintry and @binnerswasteremoval We dive into all types of good and some bad plumbing fixtures, why they work with for them and their clients. Our last conversation is about food, what tradespeople are eating and why and what they should be considering for lunch, breakfast and snacks during the workday and how Uber Eats isn’t really helping the industry and how it’s adding to social pressures to today’s generations. Things get a little heated in the kitchen. We discuss what tradespeople eat, what they put inside their bodies, how what you eat makes you the person you are on so many levels and it really is about a lifestyle, Mike and Jessica are Vegans and it’s something to consider for your construction life. Thanks Jessica and Mike from @belleyrenovations for such an amazing talk about cooking, construction and caring. Keep up the awesomeness. Thanks for all the support, the kind words, the emails and messages about our little podcast. The word is spreading, tell your friends, family, subtrades, suppliers, tell everyone and anyone about The Construction Life. Welcome to Finance and Fury, the Say What Wednesday edition Today's question comes from Jessica. Jessica – Hey Louis, You mentioned something about a Yuan devaluation in the Tech Share episode. I’m just wondering what this is and why a country would do this? Thanks Jessica – Does sound weird – a country choosing Devaluation - an official lowering of the value of a country's currency within a fixed exchange-rate system China's monetary authority formally sets a lower exchange rate of the national currency in relation to a foreign reference currency or currency basket (USD) – Beggar thy neighbour policy Exchange Rates – Fixed v Floating Floating exchange rates system — when exchange rates are determined by market forces and not by government or central bank policy actions – what we are used to in Aud, Usd, Eur – while note controlled influenced by MP The decrease in a currency's value relative to other major currency benchmarks is called depreciation increase in the currency’s value it is called appreciation A fixed exchange rate - pegged exchange rate - is a type of exchange rate regime in which a currency's value is fixed or pegged by a monetary authority against the value of another currency, a basket of other currencies, or another measure of value, such as gold. Benefits - used to stabilize the value of a currency by directly fixing its value in a predetermined ratio to a different, more stable, or more internationally prevalent currency (or currencies) to which the value is pegged. Does not change based on market conditions, unlike in a floating (flexible) exchange regime. Makes trade and investments between the two currency areas easier and more predictable Useful for small economies that borrow primarily in foreign currency and in which external trade forms a large part of their GDP – Also gives confidence in stability – African countries that use USD rather than their own control the behaviour of a currency - limiting rates of inflation Risks - the pegged currency is then controlled by its reference value when the reference value rises or falls, it then follows that the value(s) of any currencies pegged to it will also rise and fall in relation to other currencies and commodities with which the pegged currency can be traded. dependent on its reference value to dictate how its current worth is defined at any given time. In addition, according to the Mundell–Fleming model, with perfect capitalmobility, a fixed exchange rate prevents a government from using domestic monetary policy to achieve macroeconomic stability. Downsides - Increasing the price of imports protects domestic industries, but they may become less efficient without the pressure of competition. Higher exports relative to imports can also increase aggregate demand, which can lead to higher gross domestic product and inflation. Inflation can occur because imports are more expensive than they were. Aggregate demand causes demand-pull inflation, and manufacturers may have less incentive to cut costs because exports are cheaper, increasing the cost of products and services over time. Reasons Behind Devaluation and effects One reason a country may devalue its currency is to combat a trade imbalance. reduces the cost of a country's exports, rendering them more competitive in the global market But increases the cost of imports, so domestic consumers are less likely to purchase them, further strengthening domestic businesses. Because exports increase and imports decrease, it favours a better balance of payments by shrinking trade deficits – GDP includes net exports – so boosts GDP by skewing the exports higher than imports country that devalues its currency can reduce its deficit because of the strong demand for cheaper exports. Devaluation usually takes place when a government notices regular capital outflows (or capital flight) from a country or if there is a significant trade deficit (where the total value of imports outweighs the total value of exports) Example Devaluation and Currency Wars 2010 - Brazil's Finance Minister, alerted the world to the potential of currency wars – Talked about this a few weeks ago - conflict between countries like China and the U.S. over the valuation of the yuan. US monetary policy has the same effect as a currency devaluation on China – QE – mass printing of money You are China – have an unofficial peg to USD – USD increases money base - to remain competitive in the global marketplace for trade, and also to encourage investment, drawing in foreign investors into (cheaper) assets like the stock market – China needed to devalue their currency - China has been accused of practicing a quiet currency devaluation, trying to make itself a more dominant force in the trade market. Was fixed up until 2005, slowly devalued to 2008 from 8.5 yuan to dollar to 6.8 – flat until 2010 when QE The process of devaluation itself is related with the increase of the amount of money circulating by just printing more if your currency or by selling the reserves (mainly USD, but maybe not for long with SDRs) – China can’t dump US treasury – hurt them as well 2016 - after assuming office, U.S. President Trump threatened to impose tariffs on cheaper Chinese goods partly in response to the country's position on its currency The renminbi lost about 10 per cent of its value against the dollar last year, as the first rounds of US tariffs took effect. Why china downgraded - US trade wars A depreciation would boost trade at the margin - but stability in the currency was far more important to Chinese policymakers - concerns are to contain capital flight, avoid a domestic debt crisis and pursue a rebalancing of the economy from exports to consumption. But using the exchange rate as a tool can backfire and hurt both the US and China a Yuan devaluation could trigger defaults on domestic dollar-denominated debt, especially in the property sector - not a high proportion of total Chinese debt but doesn’t take much for bank runs Went through China bank runs currently in the Dominos ep A bigger concern is capital flight – Foreign investors taking money out – which is part of China’s massive growth – foreign inflows of money for investment – pushes up GDP as well last came under sustained pressure in 2016 net capital outflows over the year reached $725bn, and although China held foreign exchange reserves of more than $3tn USD, it depleted them at an alarming rate to stem the tide. China is a fairly controlled economy - outflows are more manageable – Creates less panic in households and companies and lower speculation on markets when you aren’t allowed to speculate The main problem is that a weaker renminbi would hurt Chinese consumers — who would pay higher prices for imported goods — more than it could help exporters This is China’s biggest fear IMO – tens of Millions of disenfranchised young men, cant find jobs or wives (one child policy) – Hong Kong protests may kick off an internal revolt If China cant print more money and fund the consumption for population = slowly lose control Summary - Devaluation is the deliberate downward adjustment of a country's currency value. The government issuing the currency decides to devalue a currency. Devaluing a currency reduces the cost of a country's exports and can help shrink trade deficits. SSP Productivity Month! We conclude this monthly theme with a roundtable discussion on perhaps one of the most powerful tools of highly successful people for over a century: the mastermind group Participants include Nathan Fraser (Anarcho-Preneur Podcast), Darrell Becker (Voluntary Visions ), Drew Sample (The Sample Hour) and Brett Veinotte (School Sucks). Visit Nathan's Free Market Squad and Get a cheat sheet for today's discussion Covered: 1) Inspired by Napoleon Hill and his books. What did Napoleon Hill have to say about Mastermind Groups? Source: thesuccessalliance.com In his book, “Think and Grow Rich,” he talked about something called a “mastermind alliance.” He goes on to describe a mastermind group as, “A friendly alliance with one or more persons who will encourage one to follow through with both plan and purpose.” In his book, “Master Key to Riches,” Napoleon Hill says, “Every mind needs friendly contact with other minds, for food of expansion and growth.” To Hill mastermind groups are established to help create an environment that nurtures and supports growth. Notice how he uses the word “friendly” throughout his discussion of mastermind groups? Hill believed that a harmonious groups of two or more people who come together for a specific purpose, or around a specific topic, bring forth the power of creativity and support that you can’t find when you go it alone. Napoleon Hill feels so strongly about this that he says in Your Magic Power to be Rich, “Maintain perfect harmony between yourself and every member of your master mind group. If you fail to carry out this instruction to the letter, you may expect to meet with failure. The master mind principle cannot obtain where perfect harmony does not prevail.” That’s a strong message about what makes a mastermind group succeed or fail. In Hill’s book, “The Law of Success,” he adds another element to the idea of a mastermind group: the group helps to organize useful knowledge, creating a virtual encyclopedia from which each member can draw information. When starting a mastermind group, or joining an existing one, look for these three hallmarks: friendly, growth-oriented, and willing to share information. 2) We are not a "secret society". But privacy is important. -a reliable and comfortable space for members to exchange ideas and information -it’s important to build a level of trust, which can take some time. 3) Collective intelligence to overcome problems. Source: ducttapemarketing.com Benefits include: Accountability – Stating goals and objectives out loud to a group can create a kind of gravity that keeps you focused on meeting your goals Growth – Many mastermind group members form relationships that lead to growth opportunities Specific knowledge – People from different backgrounds and industries can help you fill gaps in your own knowledge and provide very specific help Resources – Your group members may very well end up loaning and providing the kinds of resources and introductions that can help you get to the next level in your business, or the tools or hacks that can help New perspectives – Sometimes having someone from outside your industry question your long held beliefs or suggest innovations from a new point of view can prove very helpful Support – As a group forms a very close common bond this can be a great place to go for support when you have a troubling business issue Energy/Motivation – Simply having a team that understands your objectives and helps you celebrate your wins can be very energizing 4) The Elements of Mastermind Session (Darrell's Abridged Notes) There are (basically) four positions in a 6 person mastermind group: 1. Facilitator 2. Secretary 3. Hot Seat 4. Contributors The facilitator of a mastermind sets the mood, and they check and strengthen the integrity of the focused power of the group. The secretary is involved in the entire mastermind process. In order to make their job easier, the secretary will sometimes write up their own weekly wins ahead of time, so they can have more time to focus on summarizing and paraphrasing the words of the other group members. The hot seat position in the mastermind group is the place where someone can gain the benefits and power of all 6 members over the course of an hour. Contributors do the following: - Clearly formulating questions that can help clarify the pain point, the parameters of relevant situations, and gaining needed clarification to help everyone formulate useful advice. - Clearly and concisely delivering useful suggestions relevant to the pain points. - Building on and supporting suggestions made by other members when it seems useful. Mastermind groups can make commitments to keeping the format the same or to periodically innovate how the groups are run. Relevant to this little essay, some groups may decide to keep the roles of facilitator and secretary to be done by the same person every time. Some groups might wish to rotate these roles, so that different members can gain the skills for each position in the group. We gain value regardless of our role. This week, I chat with a listener from England, Jessica Shailes. Based on an earlier podcast about the "unschedule," Jessica developed an Excel spreadsheet to help her plan more effectively. The podcast includes an introductory section reviewing the concept of the unschedule with direct reference to Neil Fiore's book, The Now Habit: A Strategic Program for Overcoming Procrastination and Enjoying Guilt-Free Play. You can find Neil's books on Amazon here. You may download the sample spreadsheet that Jessica discusses in the podcast, or a blank template based on this work for your own use. Thanks Jessica!
