Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts

This is the weekly columnDid the extinction of dinosaurs play a part in the creation of wine? While it may sound far-fetched,  according to an article in the prestigious, peer-reviewed scientific journal Nature Plants, there is scientific evidence to support the theory.Researchers discovered fossil grape seeds in South America dating back 60 million years. Fossil grape seed evidence in India dates back 66 million years. The dinosaur extinction occurred 66 million years ago. Coincidence? Science indicates no.The extinction marks the end of the Cretaceous Period. Approximately 75 percent of all plant and animal species were lost, including all non-avian dinosaurs. That transformed the entire world. With large animals not around to eat or knock down trees, forests reset themselves, becoming much more dense and layered. Trees grew taller, and there were many more of them.Grape vines are tree climbers. Trees are their natural habitat. As trees grew up, grape vines were right there with them, climbing toward sunlight. Vineyard structures are simulated trees. The increase in birds and mammals also helped. Grape globes are designed to be eaten. Grape seeds are designed to survive digestion, then spread by animals that eat them.Soft, grape globes, of course, did not fossilize. Seeds did. Although grape seeds are tiny, scientists identified particular shapes and other morphological features. CT scans identified internal structures that confirmed the grape seed identity. While grape vines existed before the great extinction, the extinction created vast new, favorable conditions and ecological niches. The extinction did not cause the appearance of grape vines, it did favor their spread and diversification, as it did for all flowering plants. The next time you sip wine or munch on a raisin or a table grape, pause to thank the asteroid that slammed into Earth 66 million years ago. That event may have killed dinosaurs, but it helped give us grape vines. And wine.Tasting notes• FIOL Prosecco Rosé Millesimato 2021: Fresh, fruity, elegant, fun. Millions of years ago, a huge and powerful hunter flew in the skies above a former sea in what is now Australia. Its large mouth and long, pointed teeth captured fish and other sea life.几百万年前,一种巨大的强大猎手在如今的澳大利亚上空的一个古老海洋上空飞行。它的大嘴和长而尖的牙齿捕捉鱼类和其他海洋生物。Scientists in Australia recently announced the discovery of fossil remains of the animal, named Haliskia peterseni. They said the fossils are the most complete remains of any pterosaur ever unearthed in Australia. The creature lived alongside dinosaurs during the Cretaceous Period, the researchers said. Haliskia means "sea phantom." The researchers said Haliskia's wings measured 4.6 meters across from end to end. The animal lived about 100 million years ago.Haliskia的意思是“海洋幽灵”。研究人员表示,Haliskia的翅膀从一端到另一端长4.6米。这种动物生活在大约一亿年前。"The Eromanga Sea was a massive inland sea covering large parts of Australia when this pterosaur was alive," said Adele Pentland, a doctoral student in paleontology at Curtin University in Australia. Pentland was the lead writer of a study, which appeared recently in the publication Scientific Reports.“埃罗曼加海是一个覆盖澳大利亚大部分地区的巨大内陆海洋,当时这种翼龙生活在这个海洋上空,”澳大利亚科廷大学古生物学博士生阿黛尔·彭特兰德说。彭特兰德是最近在《科学报告》期刊上发表的一项研究的主要作者。The thin bones of pterosaurs do not easily turn into fossils. For Haliskia, only 22 percent of the skeleton was unearthed. The bones included complete lower jaws, part of the upper jaw, throat bones, 43 teeth, vertebrae, ribs, bones from both wings and part of one leg. Pentland said the researchers believe the muscle in the animal's mouth, called the tongue, was very strong, based on the length of its throat bones.彭特兰德说,研究人员根据其喉骨的长度认为这种动物嘴里的肌肉,也就是舌头,非常强壮。"In many other pterosaurs, the throat bones are 30 percent or 60 percent the length of the lower jaw, whereas in Haliskia the throat bones are 70 percent the length of the lower jaw,” Pentland said.“在许多其他翼龙中,喉骨的长度是下颌骨长度的30%或60%,而在Haliskia中,喉骨长度是下颌骨长度的70%。”彭特兰德说。Haliskia is a little larger and older, by about 5 million years, than the closely related Australian pterosaur Ferrodraco. Scientists announced its discovery in 2019. Haliskia's remains are more complete than those of Ferrodraco.Haliskia比密切相关的澳大利亚翼龙Ferrodraco大一些,年龄也大了大约500万年。科学家们在2019年宣布了Ferrodraco的发现。Haliskia的遗骸比Ferrodraco的更完整。Both animals belong to a pterosaur group called anhanguerians known from remains found in China, the United States, Brazil, Britain, Spain and Morocco. The three other named Australian pterosaurs are known only from partial jaw bones, Pentland said.这两种动物都属于一种叫做anhanguerians的翼龙类群,已在中国、美国、巴西、英国、西班牙和摩洛哥发现了它们的遗骸。彭特兰德说,另外三种命名的澳大利亚翼龙仅从部分颌骨中得知。The Haliskia individual's body ended up buried under sediment at the bottom of the Eromanga Sea.这只Haliskia的身体最终被埋在埃罗曼加海底的沉积物下。Pterosaurs were the first of three vertebrate groups to fly, appearing about 230 million years ago. Birds appeared about 150 million years ago and bats appeared around 50 million years ago.翼龙是三大飞行脊椎动物群中最早出现的,出现在大约2.3亿年前。鸟类出现在大约1.5亿年前,而蝙蝠则出现在大约5000万年前。Pentland said the Haliskia discovery is also important because for many years experts believed Australia had very few fossils from the age of dinosaurs.彭特兰德说,Haliskia的发现也很重要,因为多年来专家们认为澳大利亚的恐龙时代化石非常少。

The most important story for you to understand, right now in 2023, and moving forward, is THE EXPONENTIAL STORY. The meaning of that statement has everything to do with dinosaurs. The dinosaur was king of the Cretaceous Period of planet Earth. That was few years ago. 66 million years to be exact. It was a very hot humid world; most land was submerged under massive oceans. Can you guess how many years the dinos dominated the earth? If you guessed 100 million years, you are BINGO, correct! With that kind of staying power, you'd think Dino Dino would be around forever. Oops! An asteroid suddenly appears in the sky. This is one mother of a flying fragment. 10 km wide! Just slightly smaller than San Francisco. This extraterrestrial intruder decides to land in the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Not a gentle landing. It explodes with a blast that releases 2 million times more energy than the largest nuclear bomb ever exploded. This is literally a killer landing.Megatsunamis, earthquakes, firestorms, and volcanic eruptions swallow the Earth. The sun disappears behind a huge dust cloud and peeps its rays out only 10 years later. That dramatic fanfare was King Dino's last stand. It was bye-bye Dino, and hello nimble resilient Homo Sapiens. Your ancestors and mine became the new kings of the Earth. Throw a party whydonchya, we're still in charge. Really? You probably guessed it. The party is about to end. Correction. The party has ended, but most of the guests don't know it. And unless they wake up right away, they will join the dinosaurs in extinction. The new asteroid has already struck our world. It's called Exponential Technology. Hey, don't believe me. Go directly to the source of the information I'm sharing. You can take a deep fascinating dive into the subject in a factual book that reads like a great adventure novel. The title is Bold: How to Go Big, Create Wealth, and Impact the World, by Peter Diamandis and Steven Kotler. This book is not just an eye-opener. It's an alarm call to the 21st century. It's also a playbook for the openminded to reinvent themselves and experience levels of abundance and wealth that they haven't even dreamed about yet.Bold is a call to action for you to write a new story and live into it.If you only take one thing from this podcast today, let it be this. Developing an exponential mindset is not an option if you want live with dignity, joy, wealth, and freedom. Yes, wealth is an integral part of the formula. The book will challenge you to explore different paths to physical, spiritual, and financial wealth. It will reveal how exponential thinking affects every part of your life and the lives of those you care for.One area that should get your immediate attention is the way you earn money. Most people struggle with money because they are married to linear earning models. What's a linear earning model. The most obvious and prevalent is what we call a job. Working for an hourly wage or a salary, even a lucrative one is still a linear approach to earning money. What's wrong with that? It puts a ceiling on what you can earn as you trade your limited time (we all have just 24 hours each day) for money.I will come back to the battle between linear and exponential thinking in future podcasts. In fact every episode I create will touch on this most important story of the 21st century - The Exponential Story.Understand it, embrace it, and let it change your story and change your life. Or, ignore it and be caught like a deer in the headlights when this happens. (EXPLOSION)I'm Louis Di Bianco, your host and guide, and fellow storyteller.

They write A QUIET PLACE, where making any noise sentences you to monstrous death, so in order to survive the movie, you've gotta shut the absolute fuck up. Now, they return, not only as writers, but also directors with 65, which plays like a 10-year-old's trip down the rabbit hole. "DUDE. Who'd win in a fight, a spaceman or a dinosaur?" "Dinosaur all day!" "But the space guy has a laser shotgun and tiny marble grenades!" Argue this over the span of two recesses & this movie's foundation is already set. What's left is a charter pilot's (Adam Driver) attempt to survive after an asteroid crash leaves him stranded on Earth in the Cretaceous Period. His only remaining companion? A 9-year-old girl (Ariana Greenblatt) who doesn't speak his language. So let's update the question. Who wins: a stranded spaceman & a 9-year-old girl, equipped with laser shotgun and a pocket full of marble grenades or a valley full of dinosaurs who only know the thoughts "hunt, kill, eat"? The correct answer is us, the moviegoers, because this movie relentlessly rules. --------------------------- Closing Song: "I Could Give You All That You Don't Want" - The Twilight Sad --------------------------- Review THE MOVIES on Apple Podcasts & I'll read it on the next episode! --------------------------- Follow Daniel on: Twitter - @TheMovies_Pod Instagram - @themoviespod Letterboxd - https://letterboxd.com/Daniel_Berrios/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/themoviespodcast/message

Lisa Kaltenegger is the founding director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell. In 2009, Kaltenegger realized that a telescope like JWST would see only tiny signals from atmospheric gases during each transit, so in order to achieve any statistical certainty, astronomers would need to observe dozens or even hundreds of transits, which would take years. Acting on this insight, astronomers started to seek Earths in close orbits around dimmer, colder red dwarf stars, where atmospheric signals will be less drowned out by starlight and transits repeat more frequently. In 2017, astronomers announced the discovery of seven rocky planets around a red dwarf star called TRAPPIST-1. Then in September, the SPECULOOS-2 system emerged as a backup. These stars are close. They're dim and red. They each have multiple rocky planets that transit. And as of the summer, the JWST is up and running even better than expected. It will spend a sizable fraction of the next five years staring hard at these messy globes of rock and chemicals spinning around their strange stars. For theoreticians like Kaltenegger who went from daydreaming of alternate Earths to churning out predictions about their atmospheric chemistry, decades of anticipation have given way to a slow fade-in of squiggly spectra on computer monitors. The goal at the time was to compare spectra from rocky, temperate planets to what Earth's spectrum would look like from far away, seeking conspicuous signals like a surplus of oxygen due to widespread photosynthesis. Kaltenegger's objection was that, for the first 2 billion years of Earth's existence, its atmosphere had no oxygen. Then it took another billion years for oxygen to build up to high levels. And this biosignature hit its highest concentration not in Earth's present-day spectrum, but during a short window in the late Cretaceous Period when proto-birds chased giant insects through the skies. Without a good theoretical model for how Earth's own spectrum has changed, Kaltenegger feared, the big planet-finding missions could easily miss a living world that didn't match a narrow temporal template. She needed to envision Earth as an exoplanet evolving through time. To do this, she adapted one of the first global climate models, developed by the geoscientist James Kasting, which still includes references to the 1970s magnetic-tape era it originated in. Kaltenegger developed this code into a bespoke tool that can analyze not only Earth through time but also radically alien scenarios, and it remains her lab's workhorse. When the Tankers return to present time, they discover the comet they re-routed missed the Earth on it's next revolution. This allowed the dinosaurs to survive... and evolve! Publisher Description Robert Venditti (Writer) // Juan Jose Ryp (Interiors) // Andrew Dalhouse (Colors) Cover By Lewis Larosa (Art) // Laura Martin (Colors) The CEO of global energy conglomerate Greenleaf Oil has just discovered a terrifying secret: the planet only has a decade or less of petroleum left before it's gone forever. But he has a plan to make sure his great-great grandchildren can continue to generate maximum shareholder value – and secure his own legacy in the process. Rather than develop a game-changing renewable energy source through the power of corporate innovation, Greenleaf has perfected the next best thing – time travel (duh) – so that a team of six field-rat contractors armed to the teeth in individually customized mech suits can go back to the Cretaceous Period, tweak the trajectory of the meteor that killed the dinosaurs, and give mankind another 500 millennia worth of oil reserves. What could go wrong? Only all of human history, of course – because when Greenleaf's team of Tankers come home, they'll discover that not only did the dinosaurs never die out, they’ve kept evolving for another 60 million years...and they’re more pissed off than ever. Bone-shredding destruction! Wanton corporate malfeasance! Reckless use of industrial machinery! And lots and lots of ammunition. Like a Saturday morning cartoon that’s run irresponsibly over-budget, New York Times best-selling writer Robert Venditti (Justice League), blockbuster artist Juan Jose Ryp (Wolverine), and colorist extraordinaire Andrew Dalhouse (The Multiversity Guidebook) are here to take all of our insecurities about mankind's most self-destructive impulses and turn them up until the knob snaps off with the second of THREE MEGA-SIZED ISSUES SHIPPING BIMONTHLY (that means every other month, don't look it up). Rhino remains found in Siberian permafrost Russian scientists are poring over the well-preserved remains of a woolly rhinoceros that likely roamed the Siberian hinterland more than 12,000 years ago. The remains were found in the diamond-producing region of Yakutia. Similar finds in Russia's vast Siberian region have happened with increasing regularity as climate change, which is warming the Arctic at a faster pace than the rest of the world, has thawed the ground in some areas long locked in permafrost. The rhino was found at a river in August complete with all its limbs, some of its organs, its tusk — a rarity for such finds — and even its wool, according to scientist Valery Plotnikov. (Reuters) Oldest titanosaur unearthed in Argentina Scientists have unearthed in Argentina's Patagonian wilderness fossils of what may be the oldest-known member of the dinosaur group known as titanosaurs, which includes the largest land animals in Earth's history. Researchers said on March 1 the fossils represent a dinosaur species named Ninjatitan zapatai that lived 140 million years ago during the Cretaceous Period. They identified N. zapatai as a titanosaur, a group of long-necked plant-eating dinosaurs that walked on four pillar-like legs. The dinosaur's incomplete skeletal remains were discovered south of the city of Neuquen. The findings were published in the scientific journal Ameghiniana. Bad Idea Comics is really making a name for themselves in the comic book world. Their unorthodox advertising and great production quality has set them apart from the other publishers. Tankers is the second comic they have published. This is a story about an oil company that is trying to prevent a worldwide shortage of oil. To do that they go to the source... dinosaurs. You read that correctly. They develop time travel for the sole purpose of going back in time and preventing the meteor from hitting Earth, thus preventing the demise of the dinosaurs. What they didn't account for was if the meteor doesn't kill the dinos, what will? The answer is ... nothing. Watch the video for my review of Tankers #1. What is LifeUpEducationTV LifeUpEducationTV is a comedy & education show that talks about advancing the possibility and capability of humanity as a whole from the perspective of arts and science. At LifeUpEducationTV, we believe that art is the foundation of humanity and art is what the humanity exists on. In this thinking, Future is inward, not outward, because future is about possibility. Possibility is about challenging the limit of current state of knowledge in another words, our history, data, experience, & common sense. We are not inspired by data, knowledge & history. We are inspired by future and possibility. We recognize the value of knowledge and intelligence from experience, but we don't allow them to be our limiting beliefs to tell us how much we can achieve as human & destroy our creative and dreamer selves. This is why LifeUpEducationTV was born. We believe that the destiny of humanity is formed by challenging our imagination and creativity in possibility and this imagination and creativity is already inside of each of us. Emmy-Winner Michael Emerson Boards Arrow for S6 (Date: 22 July 2017) a. Emmy Award-winner Michael Emerson has joined the cast of Arrow for the series' sixth season, as revealed at a panel for the DC Comics-based series at Comic-Con International in San Diego. The Lost alum will board the series in a recurring capacity; he will play a member of a villainous cabal. Additionally, it was confirmed David Nykl (who plays Oliver Queen's friend/mentor/nemesis, Anatoly Knyazev) will return to the series. b. http://www.cbr.com/michael-emerson-cast-arrow-season-6/ 2. Arrow Showrunner Addresses Olicity In Season 6 (Date: 24 July 2017) a. Executive producer Marc Guggenheim said during an interview at Comic Con International with Comicbook, “I'm going to give a very unsatisfying answer to the Olicity fans, which is that we sort of set Oliver and Felicity on a certain trajectory starting with 520, and you saw a little bit of it in 523. We're continuing it. I will say that the events of the finale did throw a little bit of a wrench into their slow rekindling of their relationship.” b. http://comicbook.com/2017/07/24/arrow-olicity-season-6/ 3. Spoiler Room: Scoop on Game of Thrones, Arrow, Westworld, and more (Date: 20 July 2017) a. Do you have any scoop on the new villain (or villains) on Arrow next season? — Here's a little teaser: “As usual, every season we want to try to up the stakes and do something different,” EP Wendy Mericle tells me. “This will be something we've never seen before. The villain will be hopefully as dynamic and as interesting as the ones we've had in the past. These people, or this person, won't just be somebody that's a thorn in Oliver's side, but it'll effect the whole team personally and very directly.” Could Cayden James and Helix be the culprits she speaks of? “You never know,” Mericle says. “They are still in the wind. We don't like to leave those threads dangling.” b. http://ew.com/tv/2017/07/20/spoiler-room-game-thrones-arrow-westworld/ 4. One Fan-Favorite Arrow Character Will Receive Flashbacks In Season 6 (Date: 26 July 2017) a. Marc Guggenheim has revealed that a fan-favorite character will receive flashbacks for the very first time in Season 6. In an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con, Guggenheim had this to say about Season 6, “You're gonna still see flashbacks. It won't be every episode and it won't be serialized. They'll be character specific and I'll give you one example... as you saw in the trailer Manu Bennett is back for the season premiere and he's also coming back for a special two-part episode in the first half of the season where we're really going to be focusing hard on his character, post everything he's experienced on the show and we intend to do a Slade Wilson flashback story.” b. http://www.cinemablend.com/television/1685200/one-fan-favorite-arrow-character-will-receive-flashbacks-in-season-6 5. ARROW Season 6 SDCC '17 Trailer Finds Oliver Queen In A Brand New Role (Date: 22 July 2017) a. The Arrow season 6 trailer reveals that Slade made it off Lian Yu before Prometheus' trap could blast him to smithereens. But what about Diggle, Felicity and the rest of Team Arrow? There's was no sign of any of the regulars Arrow fans have come to know and love over the course of five seasons. b. https://www.comicbookmovie.com/tv/dc/arrow/arrow-season-6-sdcc-17-trailer-finds-oliver-queen-in-a-brand-new-role-a152758 6. Arrow Showrunner Says Richard Dragon Will Be Grounded Crime Lord (Date: 25 July 2017) a. Richard Dragon, one of the last major Green Arrow villains yet to appear on Arrow, is coming in season six -- and he will be different from the series' other big bads, according to series executive producer Marc Guggenheim. "You know, what I really like about our interpretation of Richard is, he's very grounded," Guggenheim said. "He's not a flamboyant big bad, he doesn't wear a costume, he really is a crimelord sort of in the Tobias Church model. For Tobias we only really saw him for about five episodes, so we were excited about th prospect of doing a cool, gritty crime lord, but for a longer period of time. We've never really done that on the show before, so it's different." b. http://comicbook.com/2017/07/25/arrow-showrunner-says-richard-dragon-will-be-grounded-crime-lord/ GENERAL DC TV NEWS 1. Legends of Tomorrow: Sara's Season 3 Love Interest is a New Character (Date: 25 July 2017) a. Love is in the air for Waverider captain Sara Lance. When the character returns in Legends of Tomorrow Season 3, she will find herself embroiled in a new romance. On Twitter, executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed that this romance will be with a new character. Guggenheim and fellow executive producer Phil Klemmer revealed that Sara will get a new love interest at Comic-Con International's Legends of Tomorrow panel. “It's definitely time for Sara to settle down, or at least have a relationship that's more than a roll in the hay. It's hard when you're travelling through time,” Klemmer announced. “It's definitely been a priority of ours to re-establish Sara's bisexuality in Season 3,” Guggenheim added. “It's a big, important thing for us this year.” b. http://www.cbr.com/legends-of-tomorrow-sara-love-interest-new-character/ 2. The Flash: Tom Felton not returning as series regular (Date 25 July 2017) a. At the close of season 3, Julian was still a member of Team Flash, but with Barry now trapped in the Speed Force, and the show jumping ahead at least six months, it appears that Julian has left the team. The character was missing from the new season 4 footage in the recently released trailer, which was shown at Comic-Con, an event the Harry Potter alum also didn't attend. As of yet, Felton has not booked a return to the show, but as with all actors in the Berlanti-verse, there's a chance we could see Felton again if it makes sense for the story and his scheduling permits it. b. http://ew.com/tv/2017/07/25/flash-tom-felton-not-returning-season-4/?utm_campaign=entertainmentweekly&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_medium=social&xid=entertainment-weekly_socialflow_twitter 3. THE FLASH Season 4 Casts The Thinker; Danny Trejo And More Join As Key DC Comics Characters (Date 23 July 2017) a. Neil Sandilands (The 100) is set to take on the role of Clifford Devoe/The Thinker, a metahuman with a mega mind who embarks on a season-long battle with The Flash that pits the "fastest man alive" against the "fastest mind alive." Danny Trejo (Machete) is Breacher, a feared bounty hunter from Earth-19 and the imposing father of inter-dimensional bounty hunter Gypsy. His mission is to prevent any inter-dimensional traveller from threatening life on his planet — especially his daughter's. Kim Engelbrecht (Dominion) is The Mechanic, a highly intelligent engineer who designs devices for Devoe. As Devoe's right hand, she's the truest of true believers who'll stop at nothing to help him implement his plan to fix humanity. b. https://www.comicbookmovie.com/tv/dc/the_flash/the-flash-season-4-casts-the-thinker-danny-trejo-and-more-join-as-key-dc-comics-characters-a152752 4. The Flash Gets a New Suit in Season 4 Set Photo (Date 29 July 2017) a. Set photos captured by YVRShoots.com show Gustin on set during July 28th, wearing what appears to be a new Flash suit. This comes after Gustin shared a photo of part of the suit on Instagram, and spoke about his desire for a new costume during an interview with ComicBook.com at San Diego Comic-Con. Interestingly, the suit is appears to be almost identical to the suit worn by the 2024 version of Barry Allen, which was briefly seen in last season's 'The Once and Future Flash'. b. http://comicbook.com/2017/07/29/the-flash-season-4-new-suit-barry-allen-grant-gustin/ 5. SUPERGIRL Season 3 Trailer Released; Calista Flockhart Set To Recur & Four New Cast Additions Announced (Date 22 July 2017) a. The CW has confirmed that Calista Flockhart will return for Supergirl season three and it sounds like she'll be popping in a lot more frequently this time around as she's secured recurring status. She'll first appear in the season premiere on October 9. Additionally, Adrian Pasdar, Carl Lumbly, Yael Grobglas, and Emma Tremblay have all joined the cast. Pasdar will play Morgan Edge, a ruthless real estate developer who will find himself at odds with Lena Luthor. Lumbly will play J'onn's father M'yrnn J'onzz, a pacifist religious leader on Mars. Grobglas will play Psi, a psychic villain who uses people's minds against them. Tremblay will play Ruby, a smart kid who's fascination with Supergirl lands her in serious trouble. The official season three trailer gives us our first look at Odette Annable as Reign and Erica Durance as Alura Zor-El. b. https://www.comicbookmovie.com/tv/dc/supergirl/supergirl-season-3-trailer-released-calista-flockhart-set-to-recur-four-new-cast-additions-announced-a152739 6. LEGENDS OF TOMORROW Season 3 Trailer Released; Both Captain Cold & Damien Darhk Will Return (Date 22 July 2017) a. The CW announced today that both Wentworth Miller and Neal McDonough will reprise their roles as Captain Cold and Damien Darhk, respectively, on the upcoming third season of DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Miller will actually return in a recurring capacity, but he won't exactly be the Leonard Snart we came to know and love in seasons one and two. He'll instead be playing a brand new version of fan-favorite character, which should lead to some interesting interactions between him and Mick. During the panel, executive producer Phil Klemmer teased, “Mick Rory needs his pal, but unfortunately he's not going to get the version of his pal that he remembers.” Meanwhile, McDonough will be upped to a series regular and will also come with his own, more dangerous, changes. "We'll be meeting a new version of Damien Darhk, a little less silly, a little more formidable." Arthur Darvill will also be back as Rip Hunter, but in a recurring role, and it sounds like he'll be coming into conflict with his former teammates. “Last season, the Legends were the only game in town,” Klemmer said. “Now they're competing with the best and brightest. Rip Hunter has reconstituted what the Time Masters were, so the existential question for the Legends is where do we fit into this universe?” As for new additions, a new villain will arise in the form of Kuasa, Vixen's granddaughter. Tala Ashe will also join the Waverider crew as Zari Adrianna Tomaz, a Muslim-American woman from 2030. b. https://www.comicbookmovie.com/tv/dc/legends_of_tomorrow/legends-of-tomorrow-season-3-trailer-released-both-captain-cold-damien-darhk-will-return-a152743 7. Spoiler Room: Scoop on Supergirl, Once Upon a Time, Defenders, and more (Date 27 July 2017) a. Is there any chance Alura is actually still alive on Supergirl? — With Erica Durance joining the show in a recast of Alura, EW pressed new showrunners Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner for answers at Comic-Con. “Shrouded in mystery, those questions,” Queller said coyly. Rovner added: “We wanted to keep Alura's presence on the show because it really connects Kara to Krypton and her roots and what it meant to see her family and her planet destroyed. It's an emotional grounding that's always important.” However, there's a good chance Mon-El ended up in the Phantom Zone — you know, the same Kryptonian prison that Alura had a hand in sending criminals to, so what if she escaped the destruction of Krypton and ended up there herself? Another dodge from the EPs: “Where Mon-El is and how he comes back is the central mystery of our season,” Queller said. “But the theme of this season is what does it mean to be human? Kara is going to be especially grappling with that, and all of the characters are. The loss of her family and Krypton impacts that a lot. The mother-daughter relationship is something we still want to explore in whatever fashion.” b. http://ew.com/tv/2017/07/27/spoiler-room-supergirl-once-upon-time-defenders/ 8. THE FLASH Star Grant Gustin Says It's The Show's Goal To Adapt CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS (Date 25 July 2017) a. Speaking to ComicBook at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, Grant Gustin confirmed that while it's still a long time from happening, it's been the goal to eventually adapt Crisis on Infinite Earths on the show . "We don't really talk about it on a yearly basis but it was mentioned early on and that's a goal. Obviously we'd have to go I think ten years to reach that, so there's a possibility for sure. It'll be fun to get there." The massive multiverse event saw the collapse of multiple parallel universes, along with the "death" of The Flash himself. The story has been hinted at since the pilot episode of the show, where the Reverse Flash views a newspaper headline from the future stating that The Flash has "vanished in a crisis". Showrunner Todd Helbing also spoke to CB about the upcoming season 4, which he promised will be "fun" again after the "doom and gloom" of season 3. "Last year, once we showed Iris die in the future, to keep up that doom and gloom, it becomes a burden, and not just on us writing-wise, on the show and it just sort of had this pall over the season that I think we didn't expect to be so heavy;” there is “a conscious effort of ours to really go back to everybody enjoyed being on this team and with each other, and make The Flash have fun again.” b. https://www.comicbookmovie.com/tv/dc/the_flash/the-flash-star-grant-gustin-says-its-the-shows-goal-to-adapt-crisis-on-infinite-earths-a152832 9. THE FLASH Is Reborn In The Official Comic-Con Trailer For The Upcoming Fourth Season (Date 22 July 2017) a. For the first time since the series' inception, a new character is taking on the voiceover and she doesn't sound quite like her usual hopeful self as the months without Barry have taken a serious toll on her. The new trailer also teases new villains, including a very interesting looking Samurai and a few returning faces. b. https://www.comicbookmovie.com/tv/dc/the_flash/the-flash-is-reborn-in-the-official-comic-con-trailer-for-the-upcoming-fourth-season-a152748 10. The Flash's Grant Gustin Says Speed Force Will Change Barry (Date 25 July 2017) a. “We're not necessarily going to see Barry's experience in the Speed Force. We'll see kind of the effects that the Speed Force has had on Barry, and he's been in there six months real-time,” Gustin started. “I suspect the Speed Force is kind of nonlinear with time, so Barry has experienced his entire life from star to end infinity times over since he's been in there. It's almost like a fresh start for me as an actor.” b. http://comicbook.com/2017/07/25/the-flash-speed-force-grant-gustin/ 11. Legends of Tomorrow Announces Tracy Ifeachor as S3 Villain (Date 26 July 2017) a. DC's Legends of Tomorrow will get mighty personal for Vixen in Season 3. During the show's panel at Comic-Con International in San Diego, Kuasa — the sister of Mari McCabe's Vixen — was announced as a villain for the upcoming season. Now, we can put a face to the name. Quantico star Tracy Ifeachor will play the character. Since Kuasa is Mari's sister, that also makes her the granddaughter of Amaya, who is slated to be a main character in Legends Season 3. At SDCC, executive producer Marc Guggenheim confirmed that the two will cross paths at some point this season, saying, “We're looking forward to the inevitable confrontation between Maisie [Richardson-Sellers]'s character and her granddaughter.” b. http://www.cbr.com/legends-of-tomorrow-kuasa-tracy-ifeachor/ 12. The Flash Season 4 Set Photos Show New Female Villain (Date 29 July 2017) a. YVRShoots.com recently shared pictures of The Flash's newest foe, who will reportedly appear the third episode of the season, entitled 'Luck Me a Lady.' In one set of photos, an actress is robbing a bank in a red dress, while other photos show the same actress running after a bus in a rather noteworthy casino outfit. Fans were quick to recognize the casino dealer outfit as that belonging to the DC Comics villain Becky Sharpe, a.k.a. Hazard. Hazard has appeared throughout the DC Comics mythos as a member of the Injustice Society, and was the granddaughter of the original Gambler. The antagonist is bestowed with psionic powers, which allow her to cause good or bad "accidents" to her foes. b. http://comicbook.com/2017/07/29/the-flash-set-photos-show-new-female-villain/ ARROW CAST AND CREW INTERVIEWS 1. During a Comic Con Interview with Arrow's leading lady Emily Bett Rickards, we were joined by series regular Echo Kellum, who brought out Rickards's playful side. Rather than trying to finish our interview with Rickards and pull one or both of them back on track, we went with the more entertaining option of egging them on, asking among other things: "Can you tell me more about 'sexy threats?'" b. http://comicbook.com/2017/07/28/arrows-emily-bett-rickards-and-echo-kellum-explain-sexy-threats/ NEXT EPISODE Link to Promo: (Date: 08 March 2017) https://www.comicbookmovie.com/tv/dc/legends_of_tomorrow/legends-of-tomorrow-new-extended-promo-for-season-2-episode-14-moonshot-a149472 Episode: “Moonshot” [Season 2 Episode 14] Air Date: Tuesday, March 14, 2017 Summary: The Legends learn where the last fragment of the Spear of Destiny is hidden when they track Commander Steel to NASA Headquarters in 1970. 2017-06-19 Special EnglishThis is Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing. Here is the news.President Xi Jinping says expanded economic cooperation among members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization will benefit the region. Speaking at the annual summit of the organization in Astana, Kazakhstan, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for deepening practical cooperation, as regional integration and economic globalization are the trends of the time, and it is important for them to bring benefits to all countries and peoples. To mobilize more resources and the driving force for practical cooperation under the organization framework, China supports the establishment of a mechanism for sub-national cooperation and has vigorously promoted small and medium-sized enterprises cooperation by its initiatives of economic think-tanks alliance and e-commerce alliance of the organization.Bilateral trade relations have grown closer between China and other member countries, as trade facilitation has improved, with China becoming the largest trading partner of Russia and Kyrgyzstan.Meanwhile, mutual investment has grown steadily, with China's non-financial direct investment in other members as of April 2017 amounting to 74 billion U.S. dollars and investment in the opposite direction totaling 1 billion U.S. dollars.Senior Chinese officials highlighted achievements in establishing economic and trade cooperation zones, noting that China has built a total of 21 such cooperation zones within other countries, helping to expand local employment and increase tax revenue. This is Special English.Europe has found itself at the frontline in the fight against terrorism. The sight of armed soldiers on the streets of European cities has become all too familiar. The spotlight has swung to Britain this time, but no-one in France, a country that has experienced several attacks in the past few years, is under the illusion that their country is completely safe.Squads of soldiers with automatic weapons at the ready are a regular sight on the streets of Paris. Despite their presence, the French were reminded of the threat when police shot a man outside Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris earlier this month. The suspect, a 40-year-old Algerian doctoral student, attacked an officer with a hammer while shouting "This is for Syria."One worrying trend to emerge from the British attacks is that in all three attacks, at least one of the perpetrators was known to the authorities. The three attacks included the Westminster Bridge and London Bridge killings in London and the attack in Manchester which also targeted children. As radicalization become ever more complex and multifaceted, many now agree that it is necessary to move beyond a mere cause-effect analysis and look at the problem from different angles. That's according to Yang Liwei, deputy director general of the China Manned Space Agency.Yang said it will not take long for the project to get official approval and funding. He made the remarks during a group conference at the Global Space Exploration Conference.Yang is China's first astronaut. When asked whether he has any plan to step onto the Moon, he showed great excitement, saying that if he is given the opportunity, there is no problem!A senior official from the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation also said China is working on a manned lunar landing plan. The mission will consist of a manned spaceship, a propulsion vehicle and a lunar lander. The manned spaceship and the lunar lander will be sent into circumlunar orbit separately. This is Special English.SpaceX's uncrewed Dragon cargo ship has arrived at the International Space Station, carrying for the first time an experiment independently designed by China and also supplies for the astronauts living in the orbiting laboratory.NASA astronauts Jack Fischer reached out with the space station's robotic arm and grappled the spacecraft, as the space station was flying over the South Atlantic Ocean, just east off the coast of Argentina.Dragon carried almost 6,000 pounds, roughly 2,700 kilograms of cargo for its 11th commercial resupply mission for NASA, including solar panels, tools for Earth-observation and equipment to study neutron stars.Among the cargo is a 3.5-kilogram device from the Beijing Institute of Technology that aims to investigate how the space radiation and microgravity environment affect DNA.The deal for the delivery was reached in 2015 with NanoRacks, a Houston-based company that offers services for the commercial utilization of the space station.U.S. legislation known as the Wolf amendment bans cooperation between NASA and Chinese government entities, but the deal is purely commercial and therefore considered legal.Dragon, launched aboard a Falcon 9 rocket on 4th of June, was expected to remain docked with the space station until early July. You're listening to Special English. It reached the French city of Calais on June 9, before continuing to a town in northern Spain.Microsoft described MAREA as the highest-capacity subsea cable to ever cross the Atlantic. It features eight fiber pairs and an initial estimated design capacity of 160 TeraBits per Second. That rate is 16 million times faster than a standard home internet connection. Scientists say it's routing south of other trans-Atlantic cables means it will become "the first to connect the United States to southern Europe: from Virginia Beach, Virginia to Bilbao in Spain and then beyond to network hubs in Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. This is Special English.Eight computer science professors at Oregon State University have been tasked to make systems based on artificial intelligence, including autonomous vehicles and robots, more trustworthy.Recent advances in autonomous systems that can perceive, learn, decide and act on their own stem from success of the deep neural networks branch of artificial intelligence, with deep-learning software mimicking the activity in layers of neurons in the neocortex, the part of the brain where thinking occurs. The problem, however, is that the neural networks function as a black box. Instead of humans explicitly coding system behavior using traditional programming, in deep learning the computer program learns on its own from many examples.Potential dangers arise from depending on a system that not even the system developers fully understand. With a 6.5 million U.S. dollars grant over the next four years from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, under its Explainable Artificial Intelligence program, a news release from Oregon State University said its researchers will develop a paradigm to look inside that black box, by getting the program to explain to humans how decisions were reached. You're listening to Special English. Now the news continues.Experts predict that the United States, China and India are considered to be the most prospective destinations for foreign direct investment. The statement was made by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in its annual report on investment.According to the World Investment Report 2017: Investment and the Digital Economy, global foreign direct investment flows retreated marginally in 2016 by 2 percent to 1.75 trillion U.S. dollars, amid weak economic growth and significant policy risks perceived by multinational enterprises.Flows to developing countries were especially hard hit, with a decline of 14 percent, while foreign direct investment outflows from developed countries decreased by 11 percent, mainly owing to a slump in investments from European multinational enterprises. The United States remained the largest recipient of foreign direct investment, attracting 391 billion U.S. dollars in inflows, followed by Britain with 254 billion dollars, and China with inflows of 134 billion dollars.According to the report, with a surge of outflows, China also became last year the second largest investing country. In 2017, global foreign direct investment is expected to rise by 5 percent, to almost 1.8 trillion U.S. dollars. This is Special English. An international research team has evaluated 145 peer-reviewed studies and concluded that "highly protected" marine reserves can help mitigate the effects of climate change.Jane Lubchenco is a professor in the College of Science at Oregon State University and co-author on a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. She said marine reserves cannot halt or completely offset the growing impacts of climate change. But they can make marine ecosystems more resilient to changes and, in some cases, help slow down the rate of climate change.Around the world, coastal nations have committed to protecting 10 percent of their waters by 2020, but thus far only 3.5 percent of the ocean has been set aside for protection, and 1.6 percent, or less than half of that, is strongly protected from exploitation. Some researchers have argued that as much as 30 percent of the ocean should be set aside as reserves to safeguard marine ecosystems in the long-term.The professor says protecting a portion of our oceans and coastal wetlands will help sequester carbon, limit the consequences of poor management, protect habitats and biodiversity that are key to healthy oceans of the future, and buffer coastal populations from extreme events. She says marine reserves are climate reserves. You're listening to Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing.Plant embryos have cells that function as a brain. That's according a study published recently by scientists at the University of Birmingham. The study has revealed that the group of brain cells can assess environmental conditions and dictate when seeds will germinate. The researchers say that a plant's decision about when to germinate is one of the most important it will make during its life. Too soon, and the plant may be damaged by harsh winter conditions; too late, and it may be outcompeted by other more precocious plants. The Birmingham scientists have shown that this trade-off between speed and accuracy is controlled by a small group of cells within the plant embryo that operate in similar way to the human brain. The "decision-making center" in a plant contains two types of cell, one that promotes seed dormancy, and one that promotes germination. The two groups of cells communicate with each other by moving hormones, an analogous mechanism to that employed by our own brains when we decide whether or not to move. The scientists used mathematical modelling to show that communication between the separated elements controls the plant's sensitivity to its environment. This is Special English.Fossils of a complete crocodile and bones belonging to at least six different dinosaurs from the Cretaceous Period, 145 to 66 million years ago, have been excavated in northeast China's Jilin Province. After a year of preparation, paleontologists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a local fossil center began the excavation in late May, following the discovery of dinosaur fossils in a nearby city in May 2016.(全文见周六微信。)

Story 1 - Grizzlies Meet Bison This is one of the most amazing stories to hit the parks in decades, and the first large-scale reintroduction of a large hoofed animal in this area. In February of 2017, 10 pregnant females and 6 young bulls were reintroduced to a remote area of Banff National Park. Just yesterday, on June 7, 2017, Parks announced that the 10th calve had been born. That makes it 10 for 10 which is a great success for bison reintroduction Well it seems like someone else has also taken notice…master bruin. Park officials have reported that the fence around the paddock had grizzly tracks all around it on one particular morning. As a biologist and naturalist, I'm always trying to teach visitors to the mountains about the importance of understanding the seasonal foods of bears. Bears have to know when and where to find a variety of foods throughout the course of the season and every bear's habitat will have a slightly different seasonal palate. For this particular grizzly, as Marie-Eve Marchand of Bison Belong told the Calgary Eye Opener: "so the bear went to bed in the fall and there were no bison and he woke up with them right in the middle of his valley. It must have been pretty exciting to see them looking at each other." This new herd in Banff will be only one of 5 herds of wild bison in all of North America. Story 2 - Dino Discoveries Dinosaur discoveries can happen in the most unexpected ways. Take for example the recent announcement of the most well preserved dinosaur ever found. March 21, 2011, began as just another day for Alberta Suncor worker Shawn Funk as he worked an excavator at the Millennium Mine located 27 km outside of Fort McMurray, Alberta. Just like he did every day for the previous 12 years, his shovel bit into gravels saturated with bitumen. This combination of thick oil and sand is known as Alberta's oil sands. The oil itself is made up of the remains of long dead organisms. Most of them are thought to have been tiny marine creatures called zooplankton, although larger creatures may have also been a part of the organic soup as well. As this material was buried under deeper and deeper overlying deposits, heat and pressure transformed the organic material into petroleum. The oil sands in northern Alberta represent the world's third largest reserve of oil. Funk had been excavating oil sands bitumen for years and, in all that time, had previously only turned up the odd petrified tree stump or other pieces of fossilized wood. On this particular day, that would all change. At around 1:30 pm, his bucket hit something that seemed harder than the surrounding material. As he emptied his shovel, he noticed a larch chunk of rock with a diamond pattern and a texture that struck him as unusual. After calling in his supervisor, Mike Gratton, they realized tht this was no ordinary rock. Both realized that experts needed to examine the find. When Donald Henderson, a paleontologist with the Royal Tyrell Museum arrived, he couldn't believe what he was seeing. He was quoted in Alberta Oil Magazine as saying: "I couldn't believe my eyes - it was a dinosaur. When we first saw the pictures we were convinced we were going to see another plesiosaur. The fossil instead turned out to be one of the best preserved ankylosaurs in the world. All the armor is in place; we've got skin and other soft tissues, and probably stomach contents as well." This wasn't the first dinosaur to be discovered in the oil sands, but it was the first to be found in the Millennium Mine. Every company operating in the oil sands needs a permit under the provincial Historical Resources Act. Before any work is done, a paleontologist is hired to do a baseline study of the area to get an idea of where any current fossil deposits may be located. Once the permit to begin excavation is granted, they're still required to report all fossil discoveries. It's up to operators like Funk to keep a close look on what his shovels are unearthing. If a fossil is found, the rules are very strict. The area has to be cordoned off and equipment has to be moved at least 20 metres away. Once a geologist verifies that a fossil has been found, the Royal Tyrell Museum of Paleontology gets a call and head right out to the site. The vast majority of Alberta's oil sands are found in a deposit known as the McMurray Formation, which dates from 145 to 66 million years ago. These dates encompass the entirely of the Cretaceous Period - or the age of the dinosaurs, so the area is perfect for their discovery. Sooooo…what exactly did they find? It is a dinosaur known as a nodosaur…a whatasaur? Well depending on how well you know your dinosaurs, this is a low, plant eating dinosaur which is part a group known as ankylosaurs. The ankylosaurs are kind of like a huge armadillo (without the ability to curl up into a ball), but they had a huge bony club at the end of their tail. They are like a tank, low to the ground with heavy armor plate and body spikes to protect them. Nodosaurs represent a family within the ankylosaurs and are imilar except that they lack the tail club and have a somewhat narrower head. They were very formidable. If you've visitied the Royal Tyrell Museum, you may have seen a display of an Edmontonia which was closely related to this currently un-named nodosaur. I'll leave a link in the shownotes to a great article on the National Geographic site that will give you a great look at this amazing new dinosaur

The Waverider falls through the time stream and lands in the Cretaceous Period after evil Rip Hunter utters the override command and forces Gideon to obey him once again. Spaniel. Broad. Tricycle. Synopsis The Legends have deduced who has the final piece of the Spear but not when he might be hidden. Gideon searches for the piece using the medallion but cannot process data fast enough to find the location before Rip uses her to escape from the brig. He takes the medallion, initiates the Spectrum protocol and attempts to make it to the jump ship and escape from the Waverider. The Legends confront him and he destroys the medallion. Now, only Rip knows when Commander Steel is with the final piece. Mick knocks Rip unconscious while Jax reboots the ship, sending them into a freefall through time. Gideon comes back online and jumps to the oldest location in her logs, which happens to be the same time period where Ray was stranded in the premiere of this season. Unfortunately, a vital piece of the ship has been lost during the rough landing. Ray sets out to recover it from his old stomping grounds with Nate and Amaya. Meanwhile on the Waverider, Mick explains to Sara the Time Masters used a process called coggy something, ah yes, Cognitive Intrusion. It is a barbaric Matrix-style process that let’s Sara and Jax enter the subconscious mind of Rip Hunter. While Martin and Mick supervise, Sara and Jax take a trip down the rabbit hole to change Rip back to his old self. As soon as they arrive, they realize they are still on the Waverider in Rip’s mind with some key changes. Rip’s memory of Vandal Savage’s soldiers march past them as they begin to search for Rip. Searching for weapons to defend themselves, Sara encounters her evil doppelganger. After defeating herself, Sara and Jax continue to search for Rip and come face to face with evil versions of Sara, Firestorm, Ray and Rory (well, Rory is pretty much the same, but still). Jax takes off with Firestorm in pursuit, but Sara is knocked out by evil Ray and tossed in the brig. Surprisingly, Rip is cowering in the corner, terrified of everything around him and forgetting who he really is. After giving Firestorm the slip, Jax finds Gideon in human form, presumably as Rip has always imagined her. They find Sara and Rip and help them escape. Gideon explains that only Rip can defeat the evil version of the Legends keeping him imprisoned in his own mind. Sara and Jax wake-up while Rip completes the final obstacle in his mind: leaving a human Gideon behind. In a tender moment, Rip kisses Gideon and wakes up from his trance, finally restored to his former self. He joins the Legends on the bridge as one by one, they welcome him back to the team. In the final scene, we learn where the final piece of the Spear is hidden. Eobard Thawne is posing as a doctor for the space program in 1970 and is about to “examine” astronaut Jack Swigert, a last minute addition to the Apollo 13 team. Houston, we have a problem. Here is the news.New kinds of vaccines for the H7N9 strain of bird flu virus have been approved for clinical trials by China&`&s top drug regulator. The Beijing Food and Drug Administration said it will continue to provide assistance and guidance for clinical trials of the vaccines so they can enter the market as soon as possible. The vaccines have been developed by a state-owned enterprise in Beijing. There are currently no vaccines for the H7N9 strain of bird flu available on the market in China or overseas. The flu is most active in winter and spring. Two human cases of H7N9 have been reported in Beijing this year, with both patients suspected of having been exposed to live poultry. Both are in critical condition. One woman died after being infected with the bird flu in southwest China&`&s Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region. The central government has intensified measures to control the spread of the flu, including shutting down live poultry markets. This is Special English. The World Health Organization says the shortsightedness rate among Chinese juveniles ranks first in the world, with 70 percent of high school and college students being shortsighted. The rate is almost 40 percent in primary school students, while it is only 10 percent for their peers in the United States.A World Health Organization research report says the number of shortsighted people in China has reached 600 million, approaching half of the country&`&s total population.Experts attribute the soaring shortsightedness rate in China to the unhealthy lifestyles and learning styles which parents impose on their children. On the one hand, to achieve high scores in exams, children spend too much time studying indoors and don&`&t enough time outside in the sunlight. On the other hand, a growing number of high-tech products, including smart phones and tablet PCs, make children focus their eyes and attention on fluorescent screens for long periods of time, resulting in excessive eye fatigue.Experts suggest that youngsters maintain a proper balance between study and rest so as to protect their eyesight, and parents should play a correspondingly active role in the process. You&`&re listening to Special English. The new satellite will be part of a huge network to expand the nation&`&s Wi-Fi access. The satellite and its large capacity network will enable passengers on planes and high-speed trains to access the internet. The satellite weighs around 5 metric tons. It will stay in a geostationary orbit around 36,000 kilometers above Earth for 15 years. This is the most powerful communications satellite China has ever developed. Its transmission capacity will double that of the current ones, allowing more television channels and clearer signals to be transmitted; and internet user costs will be reduced.China plans to establish a constellation of advanced communications satellites by 2025. After the plan is fulfilled, users will be able to access high-quality Wi-Fi services anywhere and anytime, including on bullet trains and planes.Scientists say China still needs to catch up with the top developers in the United States and Europe, when it comes to satellite technology and capacity. This is Special English.China&`&s deep-sea manned submarine "Jiaolong" has departed its home port in Qingdao in eastern China to start its longest mission to date, a 124-day expedition. The submarine is scheduled to explore northwest part of the Indian Ocean, the South China Sea and the Mariana Trench in the Western Pacific during this oceanic exploration mission. The trip is set to conclude on June 9.Organized by the National Deep Sea Center, the mission will be carried out by more than 150 researchers from around 20 scientific research institutions nationwide. The expedition will cover the widest range of investigation area with diversified tasks. The submarine will dive 31 times, including seven times below 6,000 meters. The submarine holds China&`&s manned diving record. It reached a depth of 7,062 meters in the Mariana Trench in 2012.According to the mission plan, it will perform a task in the northwest Indian Ocean polymetallic sulfides zone for the first time. The Qingdao-based National Deep Sea Center is a supportive station for deep sea facilities. The two sides are also considering canceling expressway toll fees. The mayor of Tianjin says the move will facilitate the integrated development of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province. The outline was given in 2015 to improve transportation links in the area. It also includes moving some of Beijing&`&s low-end industries to neighboring areas. The high-speed intercity trains aim to build a modern transportation system. A unified smart prepaid traffic card has been used in 12 cities in the region, and more cities will be included by the end of the year.In addition, a network of high-speed trains covering the whole region has been approved; and another intercity railway linking Beijing and Tianjin&`&s Binhai New Area is expected to be completed by 2020.The Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway was the first of its kind in China. With a maximum speed of 350 kilometers per hour, a single trip between the two cities will be kept within 40 minutes. The trains will depart and arrive every 10 to 15 minutes. This is Special English. In 2015, every student at China&`&s almost 3,000 universities spent an average of 1,100 yuan, roughly 160 U.S. dollars, on online purchases. Each of them received 16 parcels on average last year, making university campuses key areas of competition for express delivery companies. The volume of deliveries and on-campus management of the companies&`& operations pose problems for college administrators. Two years ago, parcels delivered to university campuses accounted for 5 percent of the national total, which helped to create 70,000 jobs. A report says that without unified and centralized distribution terminals, the "last kilometer transport" to campuses remains chaotic in many universities.More than 65 percent of express companies in Guangdong Province conduct their on-campus business via a "stall model". Parcels are scattered on the ground in the care of a courier who waits to pass them on to the recipients. Different companies&`& stalls open at different times and in random locations. This means that many students do not receive their parcels on time. The report says that the situation is the same in Beijing, which has the largest overall campus delivery business in China. The report suggests that on campus courier stations should be designated as public welfare facilities and should be part of the campus infrastructure serving teachers and students. Now the news continues.Pakistan is to start exporting seafood to China&`&s Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, using a land route that China will also use to ship oil and natural gas from the Middle East. The journey is around 1,500 kilometers. Frozen seafood will depart Pakistan&`&s Gwadar Port on the shores of the Arabian Sea in container trucks and enter China via the Khunjerab Pass, a land port in southern Xinjiang&`&s Kashgar prefecture. Regular shipments are to start on April 1, after a successful trial last month. Normally, it takes more than 30 days to transport seafood by sea from Pakistan to ports in South China&`&s Guangdong province. Now it takes only around 10 days for the seafood to be transported and cleared by customs on the land route. The wholesale price of those seafood products will drop by 10 to 20 percent after the shipments become regular.China is Pakistan&`&s biggest seafood importer, with around 75 percent of the country&`&s shrimp products sold to China. This marks an increase of 14 percent compared with last year. Total tourism revenue reached 420 billion yuan, roughly 62 billion U.S. dollars. The administration said ice-and-snow tourism is gaining in popularity as Beijing gears up to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. For example, the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region received 15 million travelers in the seven days, an increase of 20 percent, compared with last year. The total tourism revenue reached 1.6 billion yuan, up almost 22 percent. Xinjiang shares a common border with countries including Russia, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan. In northeast China, a national forest park in Heilongjiang province, known sometimes as the Snow Town, received more than 20,000 tourists in a single day on Jan 31.China has invested heavily in the development of winter sports and recreation. There are over 200 skating rinks and 500 ski resorts spreading across 25 provinces. Around 30 million people have participated in winter sports and related activities in these areas. The fossils came from a dozen species, eight of them new in China. The research covered an area of 11,000 square kilometers in the province. Various study techniques were adopted in the research, making it one of the most comprehensive in China. The study shows that there were many dinosaurs in the area during the Cretaceous Period around 100 million years ago. Zhejiang has the largest number of dinosaur fossils among other southeastern provinces.Scientists say the discoveries also support the idea that a comet or asteroid was the cause for the extinction of the dinosaurs. This is Special English.More than 100 plant seed grains dating back 2,000 years have been unearthed at an ancient tomb in northern China&`&s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.According to the regional institute of archaeology, the discovery was made during the excavation of a civilian tomb in western Inner Mongolia.(全文见周六微信。)

On this episode of Herpin' Time Radio we conclude the Mesozoic Era series with Part III, The Cretaceous. The Cretaceous was the last and longest segment of the Mesozoic Era lasting about 79 million years. Life on Earth continued to evolve as continents drifted apart to where they are today. The Cretaceous period ended with a dramatic mass extinction that ended most life on Earth, including the dinosaurs, that set the stage to create the world as we know it. Join us as Amber Redfield takes us back in time to this amazing era. Join us as Amber Redfield walks us through this exciting time period! Amber is a musuem educator as well as an amatuer paleontologist working as a fossil preparator at The Academy of Natural Sciences at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. We are not only going to talk with Amber about the dinosaurs, but also about the climate, the plant life, the insects, and every single thing we can pack in to one episode. NEW FOR JANUARY 15, 2011 For the fifth time, Rick From New York has wrangled the controls of BRYHNH to compile the best tracks from all the episodes from 2010 into the annual Rick's Picks year in review. And for the fifth year, Rick has nailed it. And this year, without drama. He gave me the good list straight off . . . :-) Here's what Rick had to say this year: OK . . . so it wasn't the worst year in the history of the world. As Dave Barry aptly points out, "There have been MUCH worse years. For example, toward the end of the Cretaceous Period, Earth was struck by an asteroid that wiped out about 75 percent of all of the species on the planet. " . . . that year was worse. But even a cursory overview of the events of 2010, however, makes for some unsettling reading. Without even touching on Politics and World Affairs, which have been "year-ended" to death (and are SUPER DEPRESSING!), let's just take Pop Culture for instance . . . Television- The Returning Champion of the Vapid Wasteland. People, there is nothing on . . . don't debate me on this, just put down the clicker and go outside or something. Books- Jonathan Franzen's "Freedom." The most beloved (see Oprah) book of the year turns out to be about...Nothing. Film- (Coen Bros., special category . . . doesn't count.) Otherwise, Oscar Buzz is furiously buzzing for Buzz Lightyear 3-3D, with the runner-up being a movie about a rich, white Royal Guy who overcomes a speech impediment (Oh, the Humanity!). Music- There is always great music being produced year after year, but what rises to the top is rarely the cream. Witness Taylor Swift and Susan Boyle. WWW- I'm sure there are marvelous things being done on the Internet, but it's hard to imagine that they are happening on Facebook or Twitter. "OMG . . .had awesome Tex-Mex, headed for the toilet now...I'm just sayin'" And what do you suppose all the massively high-tech computing resources and uber-smart people of Google have enabled us to access through their amazing search engine as the top searches of 2010? Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Chatroulette. However . . . Standing in stark contrast, BRYHNH listeners had a fabulous year, with a smokin' new website, BRYHNH Merchandise and the unflagging attention to detail provided by Mr. Bax and the boys that we have all come to expect . I'll tell you, it sure gives me something to look forward to in 2011 . . . Hell, I might even buy a T-Shirt . . . Rick From New York And without further ado.
